Divorce And Its Consequences

1. God hates divorce

2. Who has the right to marry according to God’s Word?

3. Who does not have the right to marry according to God’s Word?

4. Some other consequences of unscriptural divorce

Page 3: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

3

Introduction

• Modern man denies God created humanity and marriage

• Many seek to redefine the family by redefining family roles of husbands, wives and children

• Confusing family roles brings conflicts in the family

• God’s Word clearly defines roles in family so that husbands and wives may work together in the best way

God Created Man and Woman To Complement One Another

Gen 2:18 Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him."

Gen 2:21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place.

Gen 2:22 The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.

5

God Created Man and Woman To Complement One Another

Gen 2:23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man."

Gen 2:24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

Page 6: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

6

Introduction

• In contrast, modern man seeks to promote unclear roles and sinful competition between husbands and wives

• We seek to learn from God’s Word to prepare for marriage or to more completely submit to God’s Word in our marriages

• Also, we must teach our children that they might desire to please the Lord in marriage

Loving Head of His Wife

• Husband’s headship based on Divine authority

• Husband is not above Divine authority

• Headship implies assuming responsibility for leading family not being an irresponsible dictator

• Husbands that do not exercise loving headship are disobeying God

Page 9: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

9

Husband’s Responsible Headship Based on Divine Authority

1Co 11:3 But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.

Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.

Page 10: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

10

Husband’s Headship Based on Divine Authority

1Ti 2:11 A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness.

1Ti 2:12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.

1Ti 2:13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.

1Ti 2:14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.

Page 11: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

11

Loving Head of His Wife• Headship must be loving and sacrificial, doing

what is best for wife and family• Husband can only love a wife whom he knows• Love is a command not a helpless feeling• Husband must continually develop and nurture

love for his wife• Challenge is to live for wife daily not a rare

one-time sacrifice giving up of our physical life

Page 12: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

12

Lack of Love In The Home Is The Fault of The Husband

1Jn 4:19 We love, because He first loved us.

Page 13: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

13

Loving Sacrificial Headship

Col 3:19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them.

Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

Eph 5:26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,

Page 14: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

14

Loving Sacrificial Headship

Eph 5:27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.

Eph 5:28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself;

Page 15: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

15

Loving Sacrificial Headship

Eph 5:29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church,

Eph 5:30 because we are members of His body.

Eph 5:31 FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND SHALL BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH.

Page 16: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

16

Honor His Wife

1Pe 3:7 You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

Page 17: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

17

Honor His Wife

• Recognize that women are different than men in their emotional needs

• Recognize she should be praised for her submissive and loving role as your wife

• Recognize her as spiritual equal

• Weaker does not refer to inferior

• Prayers hindered if wife is dishonored

Page 18: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

18

Provide For His Family

1Ti 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Page 19: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

19

Provide For His Family

Eph 4:28 He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need.

2Th 3:10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.

Page 20: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

20

Provide For His Family

1Ti 6:6 But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment.

1Ti 6:7 For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either.

1Ti 6:8 If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.

Page 21: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

21

Provide For His Family

1Ti 6:9 But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.

1Ti 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Page 22: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

22

Provide For His Family

1Ti 6:11 But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.

Page 23: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

23

Love Teach and Discipline His Children

Pro 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Eph 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Col 3:21 Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart.

Page 24: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

24

Do Not Provoke Children By

1. Favoring one child over another

2. Speaking discouraging words to a child

3. Neglecting a child by not spending meaningful time with them

4. Setting arbitrary unclear inconsistent boundaries

5. Failing to reward right behavior and to punish wrong behavior

6. Physically abusing a child

Page 25: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

25

Tragic Example of No Discipline From The Father

1Sa 3:13 "For I have told him that I am about to judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons brought a curse on themselves and he did not rebuke them.

1Sa 3:14 "Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever."

Page 26: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

26

Love Teach and Discipline His Children

Deu 6:4 "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!

Deu 6:5 "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Deu 6:6 "These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.

Page 27: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

27

Love Teach and Discipline His Children

Deu 6:7 "You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.

Deu 6:8 "You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.

Deu 6:9 "You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Page 28: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

28

Love Teach and Discipline His Children

• World says they love their children too much to punish them

• Result is spoiled rebellious children• Children need parents for guidance in the

Word of God• When they do not listen to this guidance,

then discipline should be lovingly applied that they may help retrain their children in what is right

Page 29: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

29

Discipline An Expression of Love

Heb 12:6 FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES, AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES."

Heb 12:7 It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

Page 30: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

30

Discipline An Expression of Love

Heb 12:8 But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

Pro 22:15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of discipline will remove it far from him.

Page 31: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

31

Discipline An Expression of Love

Pro 19:18 Discipline your son while there is hope, And do not desire his death.

Pro 13:24 He who withholds his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him diligently.

Pro 29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom, But a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother.

Page 32: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

Love and Forgive Children Who Turn Back To The Lord

Luk 15:20 "So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.

Luk 15:21 "And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'

Page 33: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

33

Love and Forgive Children Who Turn Back To The Lord

Luk 15:22 "But the father said to his slaves, 'Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet;

Luk 15:23 and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate;

Luk 15:24 for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.' And they began to celebrate.

Love Her Husband

Tit 2:3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good,

Tit 2:4 so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,

Page 36: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

36

Love Her Husband

1Ti 2:15 But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.

37

Love Her Husband

Pro 31:10 An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels.

Pro 31:11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, And he will have no lack of gain.

Pro 31:12 She does him good and not evil All the days of her life.

Page 38: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

38

Reverently Submit To Her Husband

Eph 5:22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.

Eph 5:24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

Page 39: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

39

Reverently Submit To Her Husband

Eph 5:33 Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.

Page 40: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

40

Reverently Submit To Her Husband

1Pe 3:5 For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands;

1Pe 3:6 just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear.

Page 41: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

41

Reverently Submit To Her Husband

Tit 2:5 to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

Page 42: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

42

Reverently Submit To Her Husband

1Co 11:3 But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.

1Ti 2:12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.

Page 43: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

43

Reverently Submit To Her Husband

Gen 3:16 To the woman He said, "I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you."

Page 44: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

44

Reverently Submit To Her Husband

• Should be done willingly

• Should not be done grudgingly

• Should be done because she wants to obey Christ

• Never should contradict submission to Christ

• When a wife takes authority over a husband, she is rebelling against God

Page 45: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

45

Chaste and Respectful Behavior

1Pe 3:1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives,

1Pe 3:2 as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior.

Page 46: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

46

Chaste and Respectful Behavior

1Pe 3:3 Your adornment must not be merely external--braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses;

1Pe 3:4 but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.

Page 47: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

47

Chaste and Respectful Behavior

1Ti 2:9 Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments,

1Ti 2:10 but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.

Page 48: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

48

Chaste and Respectful Behavior

• She must display a gentle and quit spirit as she obeys the Lord by submitting to her husband and serving the Lord

• Also, in her dress, orderliness, bashfulness and self-control should be displayed

Manage The Home

1Ti 5:14 Therefore, I want younger widows to get married, bear children, keep house, and give the enemy no occasion for reproach;

Tit 2:5 to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

Children A Gift From The Lord

Psa 127:3 Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward.

Psa 127:4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one's youth.

Page 61: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

61

Obey Parents

Eph 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

Pro 20:20 He who curses his father or his mother, His lamp will go out in time of darkness.

Page 62: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

Honor Parents

Eph 6:2 HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise),

1Ti 5:4 but if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to practice piety in regard to their own family and to make some return to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God.

Page 65: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

65

Honor Parents

Mar 7:9 He was also saying to them, "You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.

Mar 7:10 "For Moses said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER'; and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH';

Page 66: Building A Righteous Family Lesson 4 Family Responsibilities

66

Honor Parents

Mar 7:11 but you say, 'If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),'

Mar 7:12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother;

Mar 7:13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that."
