For over 10 years, CivicAction has played the role of

neutral sandbox – where unlikely partners from all sectors

can come together to tackle some of the Greater Toronto

and Hamilton Area’s (GTHA) toughest social, economic

and environmental challenges.

The world has changed. The challenges we face are more

complex and government budgets continue to shrink as

our population grows and a new suite of needs rises.

Now more than ever, creative multi-sector solutions

are required. No one sector can tackle issues like regional transportation or youth

unemployment alone.

Enter CivicAction, a convener that builds partnerships to launch campaigns, programs

and organizations that transform our region. As part of our work, CivicAction grows

a pipeline of emerging talent through our Emerging Leaders Network and DiverseCity

Fellows. CivicAction provides rising leaders with the stamps to fill their leadership

passport through access to top senior leaders, thought-provoking dialogue,

networking opportunities and support for project incubation. There is nothing more

important to the future of our cities than preparing those who will lead them.

This is the 6th cohort of DiverseCity Fellows and I am so impressed by the talent. I

expect big things from this year’s Fellows and can’t wait to see the positive changes

they will bring to their communities now and into the future.

Warm regards,

Sevaun Palvetzian Chief Executive Officer, CivicAction

“Our region faces a number of challenges and opportunities – any solution will have to come from a diverse group of active leaders. I’m thrilled to be part of the ELN and its high impact, high performance and deeply engaged culture. The ELN brings together rising leaders to shape the future of our region by taking action now.”

Through the Emerging Leaders Network (ELN), CivicAction brings together civic-minded

rising leaders and provides them with the tools and connections to take action on

challenging regional issues.

Created in 2006, the network is 800+ rising leaders strong. The ELN is where you can

find energetic and inspiring emerging leaders who motivate each other to take action.

ELN members are managers, directors, and early executives who represent a wide

range of industries and sectors across the GTHA. They share a desire to make the

GTHA the best and most prosperous region it can be.

Our emerging leaders have launched a number of innovative city-building projects,

including Toronto Homecoming, Better Ballots, Project Neutral, the Aboriginal

Professional Association of Canada and the Pan Am Path.

I am a corporate responsibility practitioner, working with Canadian organizations to create positive change through business. I have spent time in the private sector in marketing, consulting, and in the not-for-profit sector with organizations such as the United Way of Peel Region and the Maytree Foundation. My role was focused on implementing national CSR objectives for the organization and on managing the grants for the foundation. I have a BBA from Wilfrid Laurier University, and studied Not for Profit Management at Western. I was a 2012 DiverseCity Fellow and live in Mississauga.

I am the Executive Director of the Weston Brain Institute, an initiative by The W. Garfield Weston Foundation. Prior to this position, I was the Executive Director, Neuroscience, of The W. Garfield Weston Foundation and was responsible for the medical research done by the Foundation. Previously, I was the Chief Operating Officer of Tribute Entertainment Media Group, a multimedia publisher. I previously spent seven years at McKinsey & Co. in the New York and Washington, D.C., offices, where I was a member of the Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology practice.

This work covered five continents, including work on the ground across the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and China. I have held other positions at Tribute and in the venture capital group at American Express.

I hold an MBA from Harvard Business School and an Intensive B.Sc. with Distinction in Neurobiology – Biology and Computer Science from Yale University.

Alongside the ELN, CivicAction runs the DiverseCity Fellows program, one of North

America’s leading urban fellows programs for rising city-builders.

The one-year leadership program supports city-builders to become better leaders and

gives them hands-on opportunities to work with high-performers outside their sectors

and industries to create change in their communities.

Our DiverseCity Fellows:

• Lead their own city-building projects

• Explore leadership and current issues with the region’s influencers

and visionaries

• Get matched with a mentor who supports them in their leadership journey

• Expand their networks across the region

Each year, the program brings together over 25 emerging leaders who reflect the

diversity of our region, and kick-starts their collaboration with a wide network of

city-builders and leaders in the public, private, and non-profit sectors.

As an advocate for education and with a passion for mentoring youth, I co-founded Jusoor, an international NGO that helps Syrian youth realize their potential through educational and career programs. Jusoor has provided over 600 university scholarships for youth to study in North America, Europe and the Middle East and schooling for 700 refugee children in Lebanon. Jusoor has partnerships valued at $10M, which is one of the reasons I so strongly believe in the power of collaboration and partnerships across sectors.

Previously, I worked for the Ontario government as a policy advisor for the Minister of Children and Youth Services. My governance experience includes board and committee roles with several organizations, including the Canadian Arab Institute, the International Relief and Development Foundation and Oolagen Youth Mental Health.

I hold a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Manchester, England.

I believe Canada’s future prosperity lies with a new generation of leadership and responsible capitalism with a long term focus. I wear many hats: I am the executive director of CanLeads, an organization that trains Canada’s future political leaders; I sit on the board of CatalystsX, an incubator for social entrepreneurs; and I have worked extensively on Canada’s financial sector stability during the financial crisis. I am leading the development of the first-of-its-kind Nominations Playbook with the goal of demystifying the federal nominations process and designing interventions to support first time under-40 candidates. I have spent seven years in TD’s investment banking team in Toronto and Vancouver advising Canada’s leading financials, mining and technology companies. At TD, I brought together Canada’s largest banks and pension funds to acquire TSX for $4 billion – a response to London Stock Exchange’s bid to acquire TSX that would have hurt Canadian capital markets competitiveness and professional services sector jobs. I studied international business at the Schulich School of Business and Singapore Management University.

As the child of two globetrotting NGO professionals, city building and social activism are in my DNA. Be it through my work engaging corporate Canada with young black “Artpreneurs” at the Nia Centre, raising awareness of HIV/AIDS with international activists like Alicia Keys and Stephen Lewis, or promoting active living with Cityline host Tracy Moore, former Mayor David Miller and NBA MVP Steve Nash. I create community connections for youth and causes to be heard by engaging the public through their passion capital. For the past decade I have been nurturing young creatives as they pursue their dreams.

I am a mentor, social entrepreneur and an African-Canadian woman. My personal philosophy is to utilize my enthusiasm for mentorship, network of connections and love of culture to empower more women to follow their passion and make a difference within their own communities.

Towa Beer Revenue Generation & Sustainability Specialist, Nia Centre for the Arts

I came to Canada at the age of 12, with my family, from a worn-torn country, with limited English. Our path to integration was faced with many challenges including stereotypes, language barriers and isolation. Personal experiences faced as a minority in my home country and then as a newcomer in Canada continue to drive my passion for equity and inclusion.

I bring the equity lens to all my work whether it is grassroots mobilizing in the community or policy discussions at government tables. My current work in York Region, managing the implementation of the York Region Immigration Settlement Strategy, is focused on creating a welcoming and inclusive community where newcomers are able to thrive and engage in all aspects of life – social, economic, cultural and civic. Having worked with communities in Toronto and now in York Region, I recognize that issues are increasingly complex and intertwined and that no one person or organization alone can affect change. It takes many with various capacities and expertise to turn the curve towards a common goal.

I’m a Toronto native, a first-generation Canadian and incapable of saying ‘no’ to a challenge.

I’m most driven by the challenge of protecting the rights and dignity of every human being. For over six years, I’ve worked in international development — I’ve helped lay foundations for university programs in Kenya, supported women’s cooperatives in Tanzania and built guides to grassroots advocacy for freedom of expression groups worldwide.

In 2012, I returned to Toronto to channel my passions into policies at home. The big challenge I’m working on today is getting young Canadians to fight apathy and collaborate to create the world they want to live in. I’m also trying to reconcile my obsession with rock climbing with my fear of heights.

Samantha BurtonDirector, Policy & Advocacy, Engineers Without Borders Canada

I have a diverse background in community work and healthcare. As an industrial engineer, I develop improvements to the healthcare system. My belief is that an intimate understanding of on-the-ground realities is integral to successful system change. So when Engineers Without Borders offered a fellowship to work with rural farmers in Ghana after years of volunteer work in Toronto, my acceptance was a natural next step. In partnership with the local community, I launched a school-building project in Ghana, which continues today. In 2012, I co-founded and led Fair Trade Toronto, a non-profit that achieved Toronto’s designation as the largest Fair Trade City in North America. I am looking forward to developing my understanding of the on-the-ground issues that face our city today, to eventually implement successful system change. Currently, I am pursuing a Master of Design to deepen my skills in designing effective solutions.

The belief in lending a hand up, not a hand out is what led me to leave my secure career path in banking to support youth entrepreneurs.

As the Director, National Client Relationships at Futurpreneur Canada, I recently helped organize and host the inaugural G20 Young Entrepreneur Summit in Toronto, an international forum for youth change makers. As a volunteer, I have served on the advisory boards of the City of Toronto and George Brown College’s business faculty, built and restored homes both in Canada and abroad, and most recently, joined the board of directors of Business in the Streets which supports disadvantaged youth to find their path to success.

Sarah HashemDirector, National Client Relationships, Futurpreneur Canada

After working as a journalist and living around the world, I returned to Toronto to help people tell powerful stories and unite people to create positive change.

I have helped amazing people accomplish goals that are close to my heart, such as when I was driving the strategy in the half-million people campaign to nominate Malala Yousafzai for the Nobel Peace Prize or serving as Elizabeth May’s Deputy Campaign Manager as she became the first Green MP elected in Canada.

With OpenCity Projects I created an online publication to share stories and discuss how people experience public space. I’m excited about our plans to release a very special new project about how to create vibrant and diversity-friendly public spaces.

I consider myself a catalyst for community and fiercely believe that the interests of business, employment, development, social justice, politics, the environment, sustainability and the arts are complementary. How and why we engage, how design and architecture play an integral role, why the arts matter and how creative ideas from other disciplines can be the key to improving our city and communities in an era of increasing vertical density and social isolation are questions I want to answer. By combining the entrepreneurial spirit of a business with the social responsibility of a not-for-profit community association, the Liberty Village Residents’ Association has helped create the most connected community in all of Toronto – in less than three years. I also act and sometimes sing.

Todd HofleyPresident and Founder, Liberty Village Residents’ Association

Since moving to Mississauga at a young age I was inspired by my teachers to imagine and build community initiatives. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to develop a variety of programs addressing youth, poverty, and capacity-building in the non-profit sector. I serve on the boards of the United Way of Peel Region and the Peel Leadership Centre. As the chair of the Young Leaders Council I help to engage youth through project grants and skills workshops. After completing my Masters in Business Administration from the Ivey Business School, I joined IBM’s Strategy & Transformation consulting practice. I’m currently a manager in KPMG’s management consulting practice where I enjoy working with client organizations to design and implement strategic programs.

I currently work in government relations at OCAD University, Canada’s largest art and design university. I am passionate about social change and I have spent the past 15 years working in policy, research, advocacy and community organizing, including in government, NGOs and the private sector, across Jerusalem, New York and Toronto.

I am a volunteer leader in building downtown communities in Toronto. I currently serve as Chair of the Lord Lansdowne Public School Council and I am active in the Toronto District School Board Ward 10 School Council. Five years ago I created an innovative downtown Jewish community and, as part of it, three years ago, I initiated North America’s only five-day-a-week Jewish and Hebrew Language Immersion after-school program.

I live in downtown Toronto with my partner and two sons.

Miriam KramerManager, Government Relations, OCAD University

The opportunity to work on issues of public importance that shape law and policy attracted me to start my legal career with the Justice Policy Development Branch of the Ministry of the Attorney General in 2010. For the past four years, I have worked with some of the top legal policy lawyers in the country on exciting policy and law reform initiatives for the Government of Ontario in areas such as access to justice, accessibility and administrative justice. I specialize in developing strategic legal policy and work closely with the Deputy Attorney General’s Office and Cabinet Office to advise and assist on the legislative agenda of the Attorney General.

Passionate about supporting newcomers in Toronto, I am also actively involved in a number of organizations that support the Korean immigrant and refugee communities in Canada, including the Korean Canadian Lawyers Association and HanVoice, a non-profit organization that supports North Korean refugees in Toronto.

I am the founder and Chairperson of Place Interactive, a geo-social enterprise created in 2013. The group is poised to deliver an open data project, tracking and illuminating the use and value of Ontario’s parks and trails infrastructure via mobile apps. My PhD findings led me to develop innovative community planning tools including Canada’s first active transportation policy-to-behaviour shift model for municipalities (2008) and Canada’s first, open, pan-Canadian interactive trail portal, the Canada Trail Guide (2012).

Growing up in Hamilton’s oldest suburb, known as Westdale, and later, in a small village called Jerseyville, I played, learned, socialized and explored freely out-of-doors. Those early experiences shaped my identity and meaning of place as well as my zest to create places that support belonging, well-being and healthy lifestyles.

I am Anishinaabe (Ojibway) from Magnetawan First Nation with a Bachelor of Business Administration specialized in Human Resource Management with a minor degree in Native Studies from Trent University, and a Master’s degree in Industrial Relations through the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s University. I specialize in Aboriginal engagement and policy development, and I have worked with several large organizations in the energy, resource and educational sectors. Previously, as a Senior Project Coordinator at the Council of Ontario Universities, I managed a range of provincial post-secondary sector projects from Aboriginal self-identification to strategic communications. My involvement with the Aboriginal community includes my past role as the Co-Chair of the Aboriginal Postsecondary Information Program and currently, as a Community Council member with Toronto Aboriginal Legal Services.

When walking down the street my head is always tilted to the sky looking at buildings and their relationship to the street. As a city planner, I’m constantly evaluating my surroundings, asking the fundamental question - what makes a city great?

`I am excited to be working on a timely study called “Comprehensive to the Core”, with an inter-divisional team that is developing a growth and infrastructure strategy and implementation plan to manage the rapid intensification of Downtown Toronto.

Beyond my enthusiasm for city-building and public service, I am an avid traveler whose recent trips include Amsterdam, Istanbul, Reykjavik, Crete, Athens, Panama City and San Francisco. I am also a busy mom on the life journey of parenthood.

I am a Treasury and Risk Manager specializing in finance, cash and liquidity management. Prior to my current role, I worked in Treasury and Risk Management at Motorola Mobility (Chicago). While at Motorola, I led several finance and cost savings initiatives and worked on the company’s spin-off in 2011. Prior to Motorola, I worked in the assurance practice at Deloitte and Touché in Chicago. I hold an MBA from the University Of Chicago Booth School Of Business and a Master in Accounting and a Bachelor in Economics from the University of Texas, Austin. I have been actively involved with the MBA admissions team at Chicago Booth and I am passionate about empowering youth through education. In my free time, I love to explore new areas of Toronto and try up-and-coming cafes.

I am a banking professional, social entrepreneur and leader with over 14 years of experience working for financial institutions and creating non-profit socio-enterprise. I use my business experience and passion for advocating for diversity to create change. I have helped establish a new organization called ProudPolitics, where I connected with various political leaders at all levels of government across Canada about visible leaders in the LGBT community and developed programs to encourage and educate the LGBT community about politics and engagement. I have also co-founded an organization to tackle the issue of employment and career growth for people with mobile disabilities, an area that requires greater attention. In my banking job, I have sat on various diversity steering committees such as the Black Employment network to help change corporate culture. I am currently the President & Chair of the Ontario Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

I am a Financial Risk Manager at KPMG Canada and specialize in Investment and Risk Advisory focused engagements. Previously, I was an Emerging-Market-Debt (EMD) product manager at Goldman Sachs Asset Management (London), where the EMD team managed $42bn assets, and the firm $900bn. Before joining Goldman Sachs, I worked as an Actuary at JP Morgan Asset Management and Mercer. I earned my MBA in finance from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with an Economics major. Having lived, worked and studied in five countries, I look forward to bring a distinct international perspective to the fellowship. I am passionate about leveraging finance as a tool to invest in city building infrastructure and social initiatives.

I am a professional with over 10 years of experience in leadership roles spanning the private, non-profit, and public sectors and I am a graduate of an Executive MBA.

As an Associate Dean at a large college, I am able to channel my entrepreneurial spirit and passion for student success by building programs and services that enable students to achieve their full potential.

I believe in volunteerism and being involved in making our communities better places to live and grow. I focus my volunteer time and effort on youth and new professionals, education, and accessibility.

Matthew Rempel Associate Dean, Accessible and Co-curricular Learning, Sheridan College

I am a senior associate at Stikeman Elliott LLP practicing regulatory law, and specializing in the area of competition and foreign investment law. In this role, I have had extensive experience advising clients how to navigate complex regulatory reviews, and to pro-actively engage government and other key stakeholders to help drive the conversation and achieve commercial objectives.

In my previous role as Chair of the Canadian Bar Association’s Young Competition Lawyers Committee, I spearheaded a number of new initiatives focused on increasing engagement of young professionals in the field, including a campaign to promote greater communication and transparency between young professionals in the private and public sector. I also currently lead a team of volunteer professionals engaged in marketing, communications, fundraising, and community-relations for a Toronto-based non-profit organization, Endeavour Volunteer Consulting. In addition, I am actively involved in a number of programs and initiatives aimed at improving diversity and the retention of women in private practice, and the legal profession more generally.

I am an award-winning facilitator, mentor, and advocate passionate about empowering youth to become the leaders of their schools and communities. Working in the area of equity and diversity for over 10 years, I have managed to personally work with over 6,000 youth and educators on hands-on diversity programs and facilitate anti-discrimination workshops and assemblies for an additional 18,000 youth across Ontario. I sit on the boards/external panels of bCurrent, RISE Edutainment and the Toronto Youth Equity Strategy where I use my experience to build community capacity.

Currently, I work at Nia Centre for the Arts where I create initiatives that holistically support Afro-Diasporic arts and artists by generating career opportunities and programming that allow youth to build resiliency and discover their creative passion.

I am a television executive and have been involved in national entertainment marketing for the past 10 years. With previously held positions within CTV, Nielsen, and DreamWorks, my professional experience ranges from consumer behavior to creative management. In my quest to support Toronto’s social wellbeing and egalitarianism, I joined the Board of Directors for Homes First Society in 2011 because I strongly believe that having a safe place to call home is the cornerstone that enables all people to focus on what matters most to them. The challenges of growing up with a learning disability (LD) in a world made for neurotypical people became my impetus to be a physiotherapist, an ergonomist and take doctoral studies to help create more enabling environments for disabled people. Despite being labeled as slow, I took it as a challenge to dispel the stigma around LD. With my parents’ unwavering support and belief in my potential to succeed, my hard work and persistence through frustrating situations eventually paid off as I discovered my learning strengths and strategies that work for me. Having a child with LD further impassions me to help create a one-stop access for resources for families dealing with LD as time is essential in helping kids succeed in learning.

Ivan SolanoPhD Candidate in Rehabilitation Science, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto

Born and raised in downtown Toronto, I was fortunate to have a better starting position than my parents, who worked hard to build a foundation in Canada. Growing up in the city, I greatly benefited from youth drop-in centres, leadership programs and employment services.

I eventually found my way into the financial services industry. I have worked with banking executives of top institutions across North America to transform their businesses, helped close over $12B of banking-related acquisitions and advised teams in Russia, Chile, Sweden and China on the future of strategic banking capabilities.

I am determined to help others better their current positions. I recently refined PAVR-O’s fundraising strategy as a Director-at-Large and contributed to raising awareness on key community issues as a member of the Advocacy Committee for St. Stephen’s Community House.

I have diverse experience in the public and non-profit sector leading strategic partnership opportunities with Fortune 100-2000 clients. I currently lead the joint venture partnership between Broadplay and NINtec focusing on growth and strategy, consulting clients such as Metroland Media, Aroma Espresso and the Royal Ontario Museum.

During my time developing a social enterprise focused on low-cost housing, I saw the potential and power of mobile technology. Since then I have become strongly involved within the digital startup community in Toronto, leading organizations such as Hacking Health and Pakathon.

I am excited to disrupt markets through creating simple and cost-effective solutions using present and future technologies. I am also an avid musician collaborating and performing around the GTA.

Ali TaiyebManager, Digital Strategy and Business Development, Broadplay/NINtec – Joint Venture Partnership

Whether it was coming to a country where I knew no one, boot-strapping a manufacturing business or giving up a lucrative consulting career to enter the non-profit arena, I believe one needs to take risks to make change happen. As a leader, I am not afraid to blaze my own path and know that failure is often as important as success in building character and confidence.

These principles are something I get to work with every day in my work as an economic development advisor for social service agencies in the Thorncliffe Park and Kingston Galloway neighbourhoods. Through innovative ideas (such as low-cost car sharing projects for suburbs) we hope to make those priority neighbourhoods a better place for all.
