What is CANgineering? CANgineering is a food drive structure building competition. It is a creative way to collect donations to
benefit Delaware’s hungry while encouraging spirited competition amongst local organizations.
Teams sign up, hold a food drive and use the items they have collected to create sculptures.
How does it work?
1. Organize Your Team
2. Register Your Team
3. Pick A Theme/Design Your Structure
4. Promote And Hold Your Food Drive
5. Build Your Structure
6. Present Your Structure To The Judges
(see page 5 for more details)
Who does it benefit?
CANgineering supports the year-round hunger relief efforts of the Food Bank of
Delaware. With more than 17,000 Delawareans relying on the services of the Food
Bank each week, community support is more important than ever. After the holiday
season, donations are normally down during the spring and summer months.
Unfortunately, hunger never takes a break. In an effort to help stock the shelves and
ensure that hungry Delawareans have access to healthy foods, the Food Bank of
Delaware encourages your organization’s participation in the fourth annual
CANgineering competition.

Get Started 1. Organize your team
Find out who is interested; form a committee; send e-invites and email announcements;
talk the competition up with co-workers
Company management or governing boards can help motivate by setting a standard
for participation.
2. Register your CANgineering team
Each team must register with the FBD by Friday, March 2nd. A $100 company registration
fee will be required to cover costs related to transportation of collection barrels and
Donations.
To register, visit: www.fbd.org/cangineering and click the “register here” link.
3. Pick a theme and design a structure
It is recommended that you identify the types of food products you need for your struc-
ture before promoting your food drive.
Consider the award categories when designing your structure: Does your structure utilize
food labels in a creative way? Do you want to focus on using the FBD’s most needed
items to maximize your impact? Would you like to make your structure very large or very
heavy to be in the running for the most pounds collected award?
Be sure to follow the guidelines outlined below, including what materials and food
products are and are not permitted
Use your imagination! Check out the attached photos to gain inspiration.
4. Promote and hold your food drive
Each organization can choose the duration of their food drive. If your structure design
requires a large number of food items, you may want to start your food drive early. It is
encouraged that organizations start their food drives before the competition kick-off on
March 19th.
When promoting your food drive, keep in mind the types of food items needed for your
structure.
Please note that the FBD cannot accept donations of candy and soda products or glass
containers.
To help spark some ideas for structure types, here are our most-needed items:
Peanut butter
Canned corn
Canned soups
Canned tuna fish, chicken, salmon and vienna sausage
Canned fruits
Canned green beans
Canned peas
Canned dinners (spaghetti and meatballs, ravioli, etc.)
5. Build your structure
Companies can begin building their structures as soon as they have collected enough
food supplies. Companies are encouraged to start their building process as early as
March 19th but the final structure building deadline is Friday, April 20th. In building the structures, please refer to the guidelines, rules and requirements listed
below.

6. Present your structure to FBD judges & the People’s Choice voters
On April 23rd and 24th, a panel of judges will evaluate the structures on-site.
After each structure is judged, FBD trucks will be available to pick up donated product
to be weighed for the Largest Food Drive Donation category, please have volunteers ready to help.
On April 25th and 26th, photos of the structures will be posted to the FBD’s Facebook
page to be voted on as part of the People’s Choice.
Winners will be announced on April 27th!
Awards will be available in the following categories: Best in show
Best use of labels (for example, structures that have specific color scheme based on
food labels)
Best use of Food Bank’s most-needed items
Best meal (encourages a variety of food components)
Most Creative
Largest food drive donation (to be determined once all food items have been returned to
the Food Bank for weighing)

The Nitty Gritty
The Food Bank of Delaware will coordinate the competition including: recruiting companies to
participate, recruiting judges, facilitating the judging, marketing and promotion of CANgi-
neering and picking up the cans when the competition has been completed. Assistance
with the promotion of the competition by competitors is welcomed, but not required.
Teams from within each company will conduct internal food drives collecting cans/boxes of
food which will then be used to build structures of their choice. Any items collected and not
used in the building structure can be donated separately to FBD and added to the sub-
category of number of pounds collected.
It will be up to each company/school/organization to determine the theme for the structure to
be built. The structure theme will determine the amount and type of canned goods to be
collected based on size and color. Companies may form several teams internally, with one
structure selected to be part of the CANgineering competition and judging.
CANgineering structures will be built at each company/school/organization’s location. Ideally,
structures will be displayed in the headquarters’ lobby, but branches and satellite locations
may also be used.
Each team’s members will be responsible for:
o Developing the concept for their structures
o Collecting the needed canned goods
o Building their structures in their sites
o Breakdown and boxing up of the structures at the end of the competition for the Food
Bank to load onto their trucks.
Sculptures should fit within a ground area of 10ft x 10ft and should be no more than 10 feet in
height. This is for safety purposes.
Structures MUST be structurally self-supporting. Please do not wrap your structure in cling wrap or packing tape.
Sculptures should be made primarily of food products.
The following materials & foods are NOT permitted in building the structure:
o Glass (including glass food packaging)
o Open or exposed food items
o Products without labeling (The FBD cannot use any products that do not have labels.)
o Candy and soda products (The FBD does not accept any types of candy or soda
products, as they do not meet the nutritional requirements set forth by our Community
Nutritionists and our overall mission).
o Permanent adhesives
o Anything additional that will damage the integrity of the donated product
8
The following non-food materials ARE permitted in building the structure, but should not dam-
age the product in any way:
o Clear tape
o Velcro
o Double-faced tape
o High-tension rubber bands
o Nylon string
o Wire
The following non-food materials ARE permitted in building the structure, but are limited to one-
quarter inch thick to serve as leveling materials and not load bearing:
o Foam-core
o Cardboard
o Masonite
o Plywood
o Plexiglass
o Cardboard tubes
A variety of items are encouraged for structures, but if a team’s creative idea requires the same
item throughout, the Food Bank of Delaware will not discourage its use.
Questions regarding the competition may be directed to Caitlin Custer, Food Bank of Delaware
Donor Relations Manager, at [email protected] or (302) 292-1305 x 253.
