It’s showtime again! Get ready for ‘Cars, Stars & Guitars!’ when the 14th annual BC Classic & Custom Car Show rolls into the Abbotsford Tradex Convention Centre for three great days of motorsport action Friday to Sunday, April 23 to 25, 2010.

Sponsored by longtime supporter, Lucas Oil Products Canada, this year’s event will be jam packed with more exciting features, more entertainment on stage and more live motorsport demonstrations than ever before! Showcasing more than 250 of the Pacific Northwest’s finest Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Classics and Race Cars, the BC Classic & Custom Car Show will also feature numerous unveilings of Custom Car creations by some of western Canada’s top car crafters. Also attending will be representatives from over 30 car clubs and more than 70 commercial vendor displays from some of BC’s top aftermarket automotive companies.

Expanding on our theme of ‘Cars, Stars & Guitars!’ we are happy to confirm the addition of Mr. Brett Wagner, formerly of ‘Monster Garage’ / ‘Monster House’ to our line up of ‘Car Stars’. Often referred to as the ‘Big Schwag’, Brett is currently the host of ‘Pass Time’, Speed Channel’s very popular drag racing themed TV game show. Joining Brett are returning stars, the ‘King Of Kustomizers’, Mr. George Barris, creator of the world famous Batmobile AND Mr. Chip Foose, star of the hit TV series ‘Overhaulin’ and quite possibly the most well known custom car builder on the planet. Chip will be on hand both Saturday and Sunday while Brett and George will be appearing all three days of the show. All three stars will be signing autographs and posing for photos with fans throughout the weekend.

New for 2010, we are very excited to announce the addition of a premier Collector Car Auction to this year’s event and are pleased to have The Electric Garage on board as the official Auction House of the BC Classic & Custom Car Show. These guys have a solid reputation for hosting first class events throughout western Canada and we are confident that their first auction in the Greater Vancouver / Fraser Valley area will be a big success and a great addition to the show. So if you’re looking to buy or sell a Classic or Custom car you will want to register early at www.TheElectricGarage.com as their previous auctions have proven to be extremely popular. And even if you’re not looking to buy or sell a car make plans to attend the Friday night no-reserve Charity Automotive Memorabilia Auction for a chance to bid on dozens of cool items including autographed guitars, vintage gas pumps, paintings, etc.

Our ‘Fuel & Fire’ event continues to be a big hit with race fans and thanks to our sponsor, Lordco Auto Parts and Eagle Motorplex, it’s been expanded to two nights featuring more Nitromethane powered ‘Fuelers’ than ever before! We’ve got Nitro Dragsters, Funny Cars and Fuel Altereds all firing up their 3500+ horsepower engines thrilling the fans with their ‘Thunder In The Pipes’ in what can only be described as Nitro Madness! And as if that’s not enough, Team Warhawk and their Jet engine powered Funny Car will be competing against Darren Bay’s ‘Interceptor’ Jet Dragster in a Burner Bang

Shootout, generating 30’ long flames from their afterburners, in an awesome display of raw power that you’ll just have to see to believe! Catch all the action Friday and Saturday night starting at 8pm.

Continuing with our live motorsport demonstrations, the Westwood Karting Association will once again be staging an exhibition race featuring the Shifter Karts on Saturday and Sunday. These exciting pocket rockets can reach speeds up to 75 mph and will have you on the edge of your seat as their drivers battle it out in wheel-to-wheel action on the mini-roadcourse. And make sure to check out their Celebrity / Media Challenge Charity Race on Saturday afternoon

starting at 1pm.

Don’t forget to bring your camera, because you’re going to want to get a shot with the beautiful Hot Rod Hotties! (visit their website at www.hotrodhotties.ca). Their entire team of eight motorsport models will be on site at the show handing out hero cards, signing autographs and posing for photos with fans. You can also hook up

with friends at the beer gardens and enjoy live entertainment on the Rock 101 / A&W stage with classic rock provided by our house band ‘Hamilton Harvey’, a guest appearance by contemporary rock artists ‘Rhythmfysh’ along with a very special encore performance by Canadian Idol finalist and CMT recording artist, Karen Lee Batten courtesy of JR Country. And while you’re at the show make sure to drop by the Rock 101 booth and say hello to BC’s number one radio personality ‘Brother Jake’, who will be broadcasting live, on location Saturday, April 24 from 11am to 3pm.

See it all, ONLY at the BC Classic & Custom Car Show. It’s ‘Cars, Stars & Guitars!’ Friday through Sunday April 23 to 25, 2010 at the Tradex Convention Centre in Abbotsford, BC, brought to you in part by KMS Tools & Car Parts, Radical Rides, BASF Canada, Hot Rods Restos and Mothers Wax.

Show Times are Friday 5pm to 10pm, Saturday 10am to 10pm and Sunday 10am to 5pm. Tickets are available at the door - $16 for adults, $14 for Seniors, $8 for youth 6-12 years old and free for kids 5 and under. Also available are 2 day Adult passes for $28 and 3 day Adult weekend passes for $40. And if you’re planning to attend on Saturday or Sunday, get there early as the first 1000 fans through the door each day will receive a complimentary pass to the drag races courtesy of Mission Raceway Park.

Parking is only $5 and if you own a pre 1970 specialty vehicle you can take advantage of our VIP extra wide parking on the grass in front of the Tradex at no extra charge thanks to the members of the BC Hot Rod Association who are helping to make this impromptu Show & Shine possible.

For more information regarding Vehicle Entry, Commercial Vendor Booth Space Rates and Sponsorship Opportunities please phone the show office at 604.539.7223 or check out our website at www.bccustomcarshow.com.

Build, What the F#!K is Build?

Build is a FREE, localy owned and run magazine made for all automotive enthusiasts who enjoy everything there is about cars, trucks and bikes. This mag WILL NOT be full of editorial B.S. telling you whats cool, whats not, what to buy or what not to. Sure we all have our favorites, but this magazine is for the gearhead who can relate and appreciate the craftsmanship, time and energy it takes, no matter what scene he or she is into. Instead we will bring you local show coverage, shop tours, artist profiles, reader rides, how to’s, mailbag, projects, and multipule ride spotlights on a lifestyle each of us have running through our blood. Our editorial will be kept to a minimum and pictures will be plenty. Being a NON-BIASED magazine, if you don’t see what your into, send us a e-mail and we’ll cover it. From all of us at Build, thanks and keep the shiny side up and the rubber out of the rubarb.

The Gearheads WifeWell, it’s 7:18pm Sunday evening and my husband is still not home. Hope he likes his dinner cold. He saw me cooking at 6:05 and said “I’ll be back in a few minutes.” Gone to look at a neighbours car. Is there an app for his phone to warn him that his wife is going to explode? You know, he would NEVER let his car get to the point where the engine’s going to seize! He knows that regular maintenance is required for his cars, but I guess marriage doesn’t come with a manual. You almost never hear of a guy that waits for the red light to come on before they check the oil, or continue his commute on a flat tire. So why does he wait until I’m throwing things at him before he pays attention to me?! Yah, yah... I know he loves me, I know “I’m his girl,” I know “it’s all good.” But seriously, why does shit have to hit the fan before he remembers what’s expected of him as a husband? Sometimes I think this neglect is going to be the end of us. Right before I decide I’ve had enough, he turns into Mr. Wonderful for a few months, making dinner, helping with the kids, unsolicited hugs, kisses, and compli-ments, and sometimes even a bit of housework! Sadly, my Knight in shining armour slowly trans-forms back into Mr. Spend-all-day-in-the-shop.I’m going to install a big heart shaped red light in his dash. It’ll start flashing when he’s been in the shop too long. LOL, and a hidden speaker that will blast our wedding song! 7:49pm, the doorbell rings. He must have forgotten his keys. I ask the kids to open it, I’m not impressed. Looking as clueless as ever, he comes over to give me a kiss. “ Urgh... I don’t want to kiss you, you didn’t even come home for dinner! And now you don’t get any, I packed yours up for my lunch tomorrow.” He just stares like a puppy waiting to be fed.“sigh...It’s in the oven.” I tell him. “I have an idea for your car.” I say with a sneaky smile.

Page 18: Build Magazine March April Issue

Dear Build MagazineI have a stock 1970 350 that was rebuilt a few years ago.I want to put a cam in it to give it that lope sound at idle.Do I need to change the pushrods and springs to do this or just the cam and lifters? Can you recommend a good cam that will get these results? Also, any secrets to installing the cam? Thanks.Bob Y. Surrey.

Bob, thanks for the email. Who doesn’t like a lumpy idle! You didn’t mention what kind of car/truck this was in or if it’s a stick or auto. It sounds like you’rejust looking for a lumpy sound for cruising or sitting in traffic. When your engine was rebuilt a fewyears ago did it get new valve springs? If so, you can probably get by with them if you keep the liftbelow .480 total. If you don’t know, new springs are cheap and you can get .500 or .550 liftsprings that fit the stock spring pockets for cheap. The generic “Z28 springs” are the .550 liftcapacity. If all you want is a bump, you can install something like a Crane “FireBall” cam. They use stocksprings so the cost is low. Chevy still sells over the counter a 350 horse cam for sbc. It reallyworks pretty well on the street and gives that nice lope your looking for. Also the Comp Cams 268is a good street cam for a daily driver and will work great with stock springs, it has LSA (lobeseparation angle) around 112 or 114. Lobe separation angle is what really has an effect for thebumpy idle when the cam is smaller duration. 110 or less will have more lumpy sound thangreater than 110 LSA, all else being equal. Smaller LSA also gives less idle vacuum. The choices are almost endless from many of the cam mfrs. Bottom line is try to stay withsomething around 270 duration and 110 lobe separation. That should do what you want and nothave so much lift that you have to replace springs. And you shouldn’t have to get a high stall ifyou’re running an automatic. Now that we figured all that out…. Exhaust, intake, carb…… all play a part in the camshaft youchoose.Secrets to installing it? Soak the new lifters in a bag or can of oil overnight. Use lots of break inlube with zinc. Important: Make sure your timing is set! Use a long bolt threaded part way in to thefront of the cam to help install it. Slowly.Run the engine for 20 minutes and keep alternating the engine speed from 2000-2500 RPM.Drain the oil, and refill.

Rob Adam, Langley, B.C This 1947 Harley Servi-Car had been stored in a garden shed for about the last 25 years in Tulameen , B.C. & it was in pretty sad shape . I bought it with the intent of building a 60’s style chopper but without butchering the frame , forks & other stock components , just in case someone wanted to put it back to original. Everything is new including a rebuilt en-gine, transmission & rear-end. The colour is “Oakland Orange” . It took about 9 months to build.

Reader Ride

Nick Mosher, Langley B.C, 1991 Mazda B2200. Full air ride, truck lays frame. 3/4 inch air lines, 3/4 inch valves, slam specialitys airbags, using a york 210 belt driven compressor. Airbagged and custom back half of frame built by Drop Dead Customs. Custom moulded dash and wrapped in tweed.

This is my 1956 210. My dad and I built this car from left over pieces, and it all started from a left over fender from a prior project. Its running a 350 small block, turbo 350 trans with a Chevy 10 bolt rear end. The seats are out of a 1979 Torino which we had to custom fit. It was pretty much a frame up resto of new and old parts with Belair trim (looks better I think). It drives great and was the first car my dad and I built together.

2. Remove pumpkin cover. 3. Drain oil.

4. Remove old gasket. 5. Use a punch and mark the bearing caps. I marked the L once and the R twice. These need to go back exactly where they came!!!!!!

6. Remove the pinion shaft retain-ing bolt.

7. Slide the pinion shaft out to gain clearance.

8. Here’s a quick view at how it should look.

9. Push the axles in enough to remove the retaining clips. If they fall into the pumpkin don’t worry you can get to them when the car-rier is removed.

13. Remove carrier. You may have to do a bit of prying here.

11. Slide the pinoin shaft back in place and reinstall the pinoin shaft retaining bolt finger tight.

12. Remove bearing cap bolts and bearing caps.

10. Pull the axles out so that they are clear of the carrier.

14. MAKE SURE EVERYTHING GOES BACK WHERE IT CAME FROM !!!!! L side, R side, top and bottom, in and out. You will have PROBLEMS if you do not do this.

15. Clean all the oil off carrier with brake cleaner. You’ll get shity welds if you don’t.

16. Tape up the bearings and ring gear to protect from weld spatter.

17. Start by tacking the gears in all four corners on both sides.

18. Weld her up solid (on the gears only) Make sure you get good pen-etration. If your welder can’t weld ¼ plate find one that can.

21. Now install the other carrier shim.

23. Remove pinoin shaft bolt and slide pinion shaft out then push axles back in enough to reinstall the retaining clips.

24. Install retaining clips.

25. Slide pinion shaft back into place.

27. Do not over tighten, I’ve seen these bolts brake becausesomeone before has over torqued it.

28. Install bearing caps and bolts. 29. Snug down all four bolts. 30. Torque the carrier bolts to your factory specs.

31. Clean off any left over gasket so you get a good seal, emerycloth works good.

32. Place gasket, pumpkin cover and thread in bolts.

33. Torque cover bolts, again to your factory specs. Gear oil can be added while the rear-end is in or out of the vehicle.

Your going to hear many opinions on this tech, some good and some bad. You will have some tire chirp when turning tight, there will be tire wear, but who's measuring tread when laying patches at every light. Then there is the issue of the law, get ready to fork out cash if you get caught. On the more positive side, burn outs are kick ass. We don't care what anyone says so have fun, be safe and remember as fun as they are, there is a time and place don't be stupid about it........
