Seems there were Build fans everywhere at this years Classic and Custom Car Show.

The Gearheads WifeOne morning before work, our Realtor calls me with a new list-ing he thinks we’d like to see. I Google street view the address and tell him, “Sorry, it only has a single car garage and it looks like the driveway is on a bit of an incline – I’ve been told we need a flat driveway.” Oh well, another house we’ll pass over because it doesn’t meet the shop criteria. Currently, with a two car garage, my husband has everything strategically placed. It all fits in like a puzzle, when he wants to work on one vehicle, the others move out onto the front lawn. So if anything, he needs a bigger garage (ha ha or less projects). I’m sick of looking for houses solely based on the Shop Factor! As if we’d ever search out houses that only had 100 sq ft walk-in closets!? Compromise, my sweet husband, com-promise! So we decide to take a look at it anyway. Not even five minutes in this house and I’m positive I want it! I’m not quite getting the same vibe from him, but I wait until he examines the garage and decides that there is potential for an extension. He’s smiling, so I grab his arm and start pulling it like a little kid at a toy store. “I really want this house. I love the location, the kitchen, the layout, and the yard. There’s even a washroom right by the shop door, you can share it with the cat!” He’s not entirely impressed by that, but I’m excited. Yay! Goodbye dirty handprints all through the house!! It’s just perfect and not too much over budget! Wow! He agrees with me, this is the one! Luckily, our offer gets accepted over the other two. The move goes well, and we get unpacked quickly. Go-go-go, so busy, so much to do... I start to wonder, who is this man? The one painting the games room the colour I chose, going furniture shopping with me, and putting the TV where I want it - even though it means removing the mantle, drilling holes in the walls and more painting, and all without any complaints. It surely isn’t my husband , he must be in the shop.... Oh wait... The shop is still packed wall to wall. I had to climb over the hot rod and the quads to look for a hammer the other day. He usually spends at least two hours a day and ALL weekend in the shop. He must be going through withdraw-als! We’re three weeks in and I’m starting to wonder when the bomb is going to drop! My thoughts are interrupted by the phone.“Hi Mom..... Yes! Perfect timing. Okay, I’ll see you Friday.” After packing three days worth of clothes for myself and the kids, I call my husband with the good news, “The kids and I are going to the cabin. You’re welcome to join us, but I know you’re itching to sort out your shop. Here’s the deal: You get three days of quality time all to yourself, and I’ll pre-fab some meals for you, if you promise to KEEP THE SHOP IN THE SHOP! No redecorating the house with car parts please.”

Hey Guys,

First of all, LOVE Build! I like that it's local and I like your irreverence. Very nice and refreshing to read.....BUT.....you guys gotta do something about your spelling and sentence syntax, or is that part of the irreverence? (!!). A rear pinion is not a "pinoin". It's "too" much not "to" much and it's "multiple" not "multipule". I could go on but I'm not writing to bitch, I'm writing to offer some help. I was an English major in univer-sity and I would be happy to help you proofread your galleys before you go to print with each issue. I'm a busy guy (see below..) so would have to charge you something for my time doing it but it severely impacts on Build's cred. when so many words are spelled incorrectly and the sentence syntax is often pretty mangled.

I hope you guys take my criticism in the spirit in which it is meant. I think you do a great job with your mag; I just want to make it even better.. (btw, as far as my car history is con-cerned, I've built a '27 Model 'T' with a 265, a '28 Model 'A' with a 283, a '32 Ford Coach with a 322 nailhead Buick, a '48 Merc. ragtop with a 283, a '56 Chevy wagon with a 283, a '55 Ford Victoria with a 272, a '57 Fairlane with a 312, an '89 Mustang 5.0 and our current bomb, a '64 Pontiac Parisienne Custom Sport convertible (only 2916 made in '64) with a 327 that we hauled out of Alberta last year (orig. sold by Pattison here in Van. - pic attached). Car was pristine with all parts there, no rust at all underneath (just dirty) and original sales and operating manuals (w/orig. owner's name) still in the glovebox. Full Air-Ride system just went in so we can slam 'er into the weeds.. Yours in cars...and love the mag! Neil

Well Neil, you love Build (cool) and our irreverence (no clue what that means) and you find Build a refreshing read. So whats the prob? Our spelling sucks, agreed, our sentence structure is more slang then a Harvard lecture, again agreed. But does this really hurt Build magazine? Well, the fact that we go threw 10,000 copy’s in three weeks makes me think not. We have never claimed to be professionals at this whole magazine thing nor will we ever. We never thought that Build magazine would be asaccepted as it has been and love the fact that it is. Thank you for offering your editing services but we are a FREE mag (were not making millions) and we would rather spend Builds money on travel expenses to shoot a kick ass rides out of town. Do not take offence to this comment. Build is and will always be rough around the edges. That is what makes us Build, we think farts are funny, we laugh at our friends when they get hurt before we help them, we would brown bag it to save that extra cash for that part our ride needs next..... Cheers

Larry's attention to detail can be seen throught out the entire build and the fact that the hood and tonneau cover can open and close with the push of a button proves my point that Larry is very lazy. Well summer is here and the show season is well under way! Some of us are working out the bugs on our new projects; others are dusting off old faithful.

Something I get asked about from time to time is my “flamethrowers” Yes I know… they’re gay, they’re for roasting wieners, flames belong on a BBQ. I’ve heard it all. I don’t care. Nothing cooler than a sled breath-ing fire. Now before you go and burn down the garage or try and char broil some steaks, let me tell you these are 100% illegal to use on any public road. They are for off-road / display / show purposes ONLY.

Ok, on to the show…No need to pick up a name brand kit for $200. You can do it your self cheap and easy. Here’s how I did mine.

If you’re hooking up a single exhaust system, STOP! You should not be hooking these up on your wife’s car. Flamethrowers will NOT work with EFI systems. They WILL work very well with HEI distributors. You can build a box or if you’re really cheap, put all the components in to a Tupperware type container. Drill a small hole in the side to run the wires out. Put it in an out of the way, dry place in your trunk. Mount the coils in the trunk as close to the tailpipe as you can as you will be running a lead from the coil to the spark plug in the tail pipe. Spark plug placement…. Closer to the end of the pipe will give a big round fire “ball”. Farther in with give you a longer “pointier” flame. Depending on the size of your tail pipes 8” in from the end seems to work pretty well.

When you’re all set make sure your exhaust is very warm, car has been running at least 10 – 15 minutes. Depending on your motor and how brave you are…. Get the RPMs up, 5000+, hit the toggle or momentary push button switch. This will kill the spark to your en-gine coil sending it to the coils you have mounted in your trunk where they will ignite the un-burnt fuel.

It was Saturday May 22, a little road trip to Kelowna was in order to shoot some coverage on a freshly built 1974 Triumph chopper. Rob (member of the Rebel Riders) had just spent the last 6 months building this chopper with fellow member Mike. After a quick romp around town with the rest of the crew and a turf war with a local chipmunk for some space in Mike's shop for the shoot, we could finally get started. Luke Balogh, some will recognize this name some won't. Luke is the owner and operator of Luke'sCustom Machine and Design which specializes in custom fabrication, welding, machining and vintage engine building particularly Hemi's and Flatheads. I had the chance to spend a rainy Sunday at his shop and check out two of his own personal projects he has been wrenching on for some time now. The first of two is a red primered 1934 5 window coupe which he started back in 1980 and took 22 years until it could be driven, since then Luke has put 4500 miles on the car and it continues to be a work in progress. Next is a clone of a famous 1934 fuel coupe from the late fifty's, early sixty's. Freemont raceway 1985 was the first time Luke had seen the original Mooneyham & Sharp 554 and made the decision to build one of his own, but was not started until late 2006. Using his earlier 1934 coupe as a reference, he built the 554 coupe out of a 4dr he had laying around the shop. Luke did his research on this build to make the clone as close to the origi-nal as possible with the exception of up to date specs needed to run in the Nostalgia 1 eliminator class 750 index in the Heritage series.
