Belin Memorial Vacation Bible School will be held June 14-18, 5:30 PM - 8 PM. As the leaders and volunteers prepare for this exciting event, we began thinking about the definitions of those three words, “Vacation,” “Bible,” “School.”

VACATION- “A specific trip or journey, breaking from work.” (Wikipedia)

SCHOOL- “An institution designed for the teaching of students.” (Wikipedia)

The definitions began to ring true as we consider the reason and need for Belin Memorial to support VBS. We want to teach our students about the sacred text by taking a specific trip or journey! HOW EXCITING!

The planners, preparers, leaders, and all those who are volunteering their valuable time to this special journey will

be teaching the history of the Old Testament tabernacle. We will be leading our children as they build a tabernacle and participate in one of the twelve tribes of Israel. This journey is part of who we are as Christians.

We hope that as we end our VBS, our children and youth will understand that we no longer need the rituals of the tabernacle. Jesus was the sacrificial lamb that paid the price for our sins so that we might live with him in paradise! We are truly blessed and grateful people!

Note: registration for VBS is still open at this time. Register online or pick up a form in the Family Life Center or church office. See page 3 for additional information.

The choir is directed by Tendekai Kuture, a Zimbabwean and distinguished choral conductor who is head of the music department in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Africa University. The students are from various academic disciplines and from eight African countries, all with a passion for music ministry. The choir’s repertoire is drawn from the African praise and worship tradition. Belin Memorial is most honored to be selected as a host church during the choir’s United States tour and encourage you to not miss this most special morning of worship.

Let Your Light Shine - a message from your Stewardship Team

Matthew 4:19-22 New International Version (NIV)

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people . . .” Jesus asks the same of us. Let us look at this in two ways related to stewardship at Belin Memorial. The dictionary says that stewardship “is the management of one’s

resources.” Likewise, stewardship at Belin Memorial is the collection and management of not only the financial resources but utilization of the skills and talents that our congregation has to offer. Our Belin Stewardship Team works throughout the year planning not only the financial (pledge) campaign, but also the best utilization of our congregation’s time and talents. The fall pledge campaign is critical for our Finance Team and staff to plan the operating budget each year allowing our church teams and administration to make appropriate spending decisions. We encourage all of our members to prayerfully consider making a pledged financial commitment this fall.

Just as important as the financial campaign is the need for every member of our church family to make a commitment to the many teams at Belin in need of help. Almost every week there is a plea for help from various groups here at Belin Memorial. We are always in need of volunteers for our many programs and ministries. Jesus declared in Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

PLEASE GET OUT THERE AND LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE!

Sunday Morning KIDZONE The last formal Sunday school class for children will be May 31 before we break for summer. Beginning June 7, we will offer a special “KIDZONE” program, led by Morgan Welch. Kids, join us on Sundays during the

summer months, 10 AM - 10:45 AM!

Profiles of Service - by Carrie Humphreys (fifth in a series of interviews with the staff at Belin Memorial)

Scott Lewis, an expert in software technology, has an artistic side also. He can run the complex computer programs necessary to facilitate the musicians and vocalists showcased in the contemporary Harbor worship services, and, in addition, he performs with the musical teams.

A singer and acoustic guitarist, Lewis is the Contemporary Worship Leader at Belin Memorial. The recently launched worship services are high-energy, youth and family oriented gatherings twice each Sunday held in the Family Life Center. The Harbor services are growing in participation and acceptance by all of Belin members.

"There are so many ways to worship God," said Lewis. "We must be open to all kinds of worship styles. People are really opening their hearts and minds and warming up to the contemporary concept."

Lewis, 45, discovered God in college at Fairmont State University in West Virginia while playing football and studying for a business degree. "God showed himself to me and I was radically changed." He spent twenty years in youth, adult, and worship ministry. Relocating here from West Virginia, he joined the staff of Belin Memorial last fall. He describes the Harbor's live music-filled morning as a mix of Christian pop and ballads. At most services, the Gospel is delivered by Pastor Scott Johnson, and dress is casual.

"I think we are making a difference," he said. "Four services, one church, one vision."

******************

For eighteen years pianist Sissy Rogerson has delighted Belin membership with her musical abilities. Her father taught her to play "by ear" at just five-years-old. The Georgetown native started piano and organ lessons in third grade and by high school she was playing the organ for St. Mary's Catholic church. She recalls when Belin's choir was down to around a dozen singers. "I've seen so many changes and so much growth."

Rogerson boasts three children and six grandchildren and says she relishes the five years she and her family were missionaries in Israel and Dubai. With a master's degree in childhood education, she has also enjoyed the past 19 years teaching first grade at Waccamaw Elementary school.

"Teaching is my career," Rogerson says, "but music is my real love. As Belin's accompanist, I feel I am using my talent to give back to God."

******************

He's no ordinary Assistant Director of Worships Arts. Jody Watts is a performer with a long list of credits in theater arts as a tenor, actor, and musician. He was first employed at Belin thirteen years ago. We know him as a choir soloist, and, when assigned by Jim Sellers, he directs the songsters - which he calls "a little family."

His real family - wife Alissa and children Ryland and Kai - are equally involved in the arts. Live music is Watts's passion, and at age 39, he's an expert in playing the guitar, saxophone, base, and percussion. "I'd love to have a full orchestra perform with the choir every Sunday. There's nothing like live music."

Classically trained, Watts recalls singing his first solo in fourth grade. He's had a "pretty good career," he confides, noting past concert appearances in London, Radio City Music Hall, and off-Broadway theater. Currently, when not immersed in Belin programs, he is the full-time "King" and emcee at Medieval Times. But, whatever he does, he says, he walks with the Lord. "He's always within me."

Can You Step In? We are always in need of volunteers in our nursery and SHINE Time programs as well as acolytes and crucifers. Contact Blair Delappe to step in, 843.357.5175
