BUICK AND LEXUS BACK ON TOPSCORE HIGHEST IN SERVICE SATISFACTION This weeks Automotive News reported the results J.D. Powers latest scorecard of satisfaction with dealership service departments. Buick and Lexus regained their familiar top rankings helping the U.S. industry auto industry for the second straight year. The 2017 version of the Consumer Service Index Study shows that General Motors Buick brand raised its score to 860 on a 1,000-point scale. Buick won the title for the third time in four years among the mass market brands, and that kept GM as a top performer in the yearly study. Mini, last years winner in the mass-market brands followed Buick. GMC, Chevrolet and Nissan were in the top five to bring the mass-market average up by five points to 807. Four Fiat Chrysler brands, Dodge, Ram, Jeep and Fiat, finished at the bottom of the mass-market list. Lexus, Toyotas luxury brand was number one for that category for five straight years, but fell from the top spot for three years. Lexus took the title again this year with 874 out of 1,000. Up five points from last years score. Audi dropped from last years top spot behind Lexus, but still placed high among the luxury brands. Lincoln, Porsche and Cadillac rounded out the top five for the category with an average of 859. The lowest scoring luxury brands were Acura, Volvo, and last-placed Land Rover. This is the seventh straight year that each of General Motors four remaining U.S. brands ranked among the top five in either category. The study pointed to overall service quality improvements and the performance of service advisors, and noted that franchised dealers service departments exceeded the performance of independent service shops by a wide margin. Chris Sutton, J.D. Powers vice president of U.S. automotive retail practice noted that there are some areas were dealers have lots of room for improvement. For instance, 55% customers indicated they will definitely will return to a dealership for service if they are contacted by phone during the service visit. That percentage rose to 67% if they receive updates during the visit by text. Customers increasingly prefer to get updates by text. Forty-one percent of Gen Y and Gen X (born in 1965-1994) and 25% of baby boomers (1946-1964) say they prefer to get updates by text. Sutton said in a statement that only 3% of customers indicate they receive text message updates. Correcting that disconnect by adding more text message capability should be a priority with a service operation.
