While Jack Eichel has dazzled with his skills during his first season and half with the Sabres, it has always seemed that he was capable of much more. Since returning from his preseason injury, Eichel‘s production has steadily increased to a level that shows he is be-coming one of the leagues elite players. In his last 24 games, since going scoreless on February 2nd, Eichel has played 24 games scoring nine goals and 20 assists. This projects to 31 goals and 68 assists over 82 games. While it would be difficult to replicate that scoring pace over a full season, it is clear that Eichel is at that point per game pace which defines an elite offensive player

Eichel Evolving Into Elite Player

in the modern day defen-sive oriented NHL with his 21-29-50 totals in 54 games projecting to 32 goals and 44 assists over 82 games. This production in-crease coincides with Eichels retention of for-mer NHL coach and scor-ing star Adam Oates as a private tutor. Eichel‘s emergence as an elite play maker reflects Oates career specialty as a set up specialist. Oates fin-ished his NHL career with 1,079 assists, rank-ing seventh all time. Private coaches have proliferated in recent years as coaching staffs don‘t have time to tu-tor each player on the subtle nuances of the game. Players seeking a competitive edge use nutrition and fitness ex-perts, so skills coaches

are a natural extension of their drive to be the best athlete they can be. One of the best is Darryl Belfy of St. Catharines who has trained Patrick Kane since he was nine years old and continues in that role. Belfry has also worked with the Sa-bres Justin Bailey. Seven Stamkos, Zach Paise and Mark Scheifele are just an example of the NHL stars using private coach-es. Adam Oates has as-sembled a stable of about 50 NHL players includ-ing Eichel that he works with. Typically these skills coaches work with them on ice in the sum-mer. During the season they use conferencing software to review vid-eo of the players perfor-mance, reinforcing their lessons. These coaches typically focus on offen-sive skills which can help their students in an NHL which focuses primarily on defensive play. Eichel still needs to learn the grinding style of play that is the mod-ern day NHL Players like Sydney Crosby and Joe Thornton have dom-inated the league for a decade and longer and are proficient at this style while waiting for their scoring opportuni-ties. Crosby has been the games most skilled player for his career and is also the leagues best grinder. Eichel‘s -9 this season shows he has room to grow in becoming an all around player. Any great player can be stopped by good defense. Until a teams top stars learn to play defense first, their team will not be a winner. When Eichel grows into that role, the Sabres will become a contender.Eichel with puck.

the depths of the Great Depression, found the strength, endurance and unity to defeat the best rowing teams in the world. They persevered to win the gold medal at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, upsetting Adolf Hitler’s display of German supe-riority. This truly Ameri-can story of the underdog rising above all disadvan-tages in class, birthright, economics and human en-durance has been critical-ly acclaimed and inspired a PBS documentary, The Boys of ’36, which aired in 2016. The book has been

optioned for a major mo-tion picture by The Wein-stein Company, though a release date is not yet an-nounced. Schools and book clubs

are encouraged to partic-ipate and can learn more by contacting the Buffa-lo & Erie County Public Library System at 858-8900.

PRAYER TO ST. JUDE Most holy apostle St. Jude Thaddeus faith-ful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered your beloved Master in to the hands of the enemies has caused you to be forgotten by many, but the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases and of things despaired of. Pray for me who am so needy; make use, I implore you of that particular privilege accorded to you to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolations and succor of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings particularly (here mention your petition) ... and that I may bless God with you and all the elect throughout eternity. I promise you, O blessed Jude to be ever mindful of this great favor, and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen.

The STREAM & LAKE MAP OFNEW YORK resembles another map--known to Pennsylvania anglers as the“Lost Stream Map.”

It was completed in 1965 after a 30 year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor.

Professor Higbee painstakinglyplotted by hand, the location of45,000 miles of streams onto themap. It sold extremely well - untilthe printer declared bankruptcy andhauled Higbee’s work to the landfill.

But reprints were impossiblebecause the maps were printed innon-photographic blue. Higbee was even offered $400 for one of his lastmaps. And state agencies wereforced to keep their copies underlock and key.

Then, at the age of 91, HowardHigbee’s dream came true.Computers made it possible toreprint the map.

Then the STREAM & LAKE MAPOF NEW YORK was created.
