The plan for our great escape is simple:

Two counties. Two days. One tank of gas.

And a morning-to-night jam-packed itinerary

to ensure we squeeze the most out of our

48-hour getaway.

On our agenda: kayaking, water biking and

stand-up paddleboarding at Buffalo’s revi-

talized Canalside, bagging budget-friendly

designer finds at Fashion Outlets of Niagara

Falls, USA, sampling the resort experience

at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino, perusing

tantalizing menus at top-notch restaurants,

one-of-a-kind boutique street shopping and

a meandering lakeside drive through the

Niagara Wine Trail, USA.

After a late afternoon check in at Buffalo’s

sleekly designed new Marriott Harbor Center, we’re awestruck by the view

18 floors below of bustling Canalside,

a formerly industrial waterfront area that’s

been turned into a massive city playground

thanks to $300 million in new development.

We’re pumped to get in on the action.

But first, dinner. We walk to Toutant,

a popular new spot in downtown Buffalo

featuring Southern-inspired comfort food

and an impressive array of whiskey. We sip

on Buffalo Trace and Four Roses before

ordering a bountiful batch of shrimp and

sausage jambalaya and topping it off with a

recommendation from our waitress — ooey

gooey cake, a practically carnal concoction of

praline pecans and bourbon caramel.

The next morning we head to Canalside for a

triple dose of aqua activity. After a five-minute

lesson from BFLO Harbor Kayak, we’re up

on our paddleboards looking like pros. A half

hour later, perched high on water bikes, we

giggle like kids trying out giant trikes as we

giddily bounce along the rippling surface. Next

it’s a surreal and peaceful kayak paddle in the

shadow of one of the largest collections of

grain elevators in the world. As we drift by the

still operating General Mills plant, workers on

an afternoon break wave in friendly greeting.

Buffalo’s waterfront has achieved what many

thought impossible — carving out a natural

preserve in the heart of a former industrial

heartland.

ITH THEIR CAPTIVATING PERSONALITIES, REGAL BEARING AND

rich historical pedigree, Buffalo and Niagara Falls are the grande dames

of Western New York State. A mere half hour apart, they offer a double

whammy of wining, dining and other delights for two girlfriends ready to

replace their usual multitasking to-do lists for a more adventurous go-to list.

Cruising Canalside

Buffalo Niagara offers a luxe getaway

3

Page 6: Buffalo Niagara shopping guide

At lunch we have a waterfront seat on the

outdoor patio at RiverWorks, a 1,000 seat

restaurant and entertainment complex

(it includes a roller derby track and hockey

rink) that rises majestically from among

towering waterfront grain elevators. One of the

RiverWorks grain elevators has turned into a

brewery, while adjacent silo ruins have opened

as a beer garden.

That afternoon we stroll Canalside’s boardwalk,

which pulses with positive energy thanks to

free outdoor activities from yoga classes to

weekly concerts and outdoor games such as

ping pong, checkers, hula hoops, bean bag

toss and ladder ball. There are funky public

art installations, a giant sandbox, lemonade

stands, ice cream huts and wine bars that

attract everyone from rambunctious tots to

handholding hipster couples and promenading

seniors.

At day’s end we settle into a couple of the 100

colorful and iconic Adirondack chairs provided

for patrons’ seating pleasure. With a glass of

chardonnay in hand, we catch an open mic show

of musical performances. As the cool breeze off

the Buffalo River fluffs our hair, we’re blown

away by 13-year-old Maggie O’Connell belting

out Etta James’ At Last with all the powerful

emotion of a seasoned jazz singer. Just another

magical moment at Canalside.

Back in the car on the I-190 we head toward

the must-shop stop that’s an essential part

of any girlfriend getaway to Niagara Falls —

the 200-store Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, USA, a premier designer outlet mall

for Western New York and Southern Ontario.

Here, sales reign supreme with savings up to

75% on classic wardrobe items from the likes

of Ann Taylor, Brooks Brothers, Dress Barn

and The Limited, footwear from Coach and

Converse and housewares from Le Creuset and

Corningware. We happened upon an end-of-

season blow-out sale at New York & Company

and I dropped less than $100 for four fitted

stretch cotton blouses, 2 button-up sweaters in

hot pink and sapphire blue, grey leggings and a

handful of silver jewelry. Score!

Bagging those deals

means there’s a good

chance lady luck

might smile on us at

the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino,

which boosts 3,600

slot machines and 90

gaming tables. Even

if you aren’t much

of a gambler, you can live the Vegas lifestyle

complete with resort-style amenities — relax

on the rooftop in elegant chaise loungers, take

advantage of the three-hour “Queen for a Day”

spa package, and hit the culinary jackpot at the

award-winning Western Door Steakhouse,

which has just undergone a $5 million renova-

tion. We were putty in the hands of Tony, our

knowledgeable waiter, taking him up on his

every suggestion, from the Meiomi pinot noir to

the blackened scallops with roasted pistachio

and smoked corn jam and the daintily-arranged

crème brûlée with fresh whipped cream and a

lace cookie.

There are plenty of opportunities for easy side

trips outside the city limits of Buffalo Niagara.

Stop in for a breakfast of carnitas con huevos,

biscuits and gravy or scrambled tofu hash at

Betty’s, a communal gathering hub in Buffalo’s

Allentown, before making the half hour trek

to East Aurora for a tour of the Roycroft Campus, which details the 120-year-old

history of a unique community of artists which

formed part of the Arts and Crafts movement

in the U.S. Then head to Main Street for street

shopping — be sure to stop at Vidler’s, the largest

five and dime in the

world with more

than 75,000 items in

four adjoining 19th

century buildings.

The inviting Elm Street Bakery,

with an extensive

menu of soups, sand-

wiches, salads and

brick-oven pizzas,

makes for a great

lunch spot.

In Niagara County,

visit Shawnee Country Barns Antique Co-op,

a 100-vendor premier destination antique and

craft store housed in a restored 1912 barn in

North Tonawanda. While you’re in town, be

sure to take a quick spin around the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum.

The charming Village of Lewiston also offers a

unique shopping experience. After fortifying

ourselves with Fountain of Youth smoothies

(made with fresh spinach, grape, strawberry

and banana) at 700 Center Street Juice Bistro & Café, we hit the retail jackpot at

jewelry store Cheri Amour, accessory paradise

The End of the Road Boutique and You & Me Boutique, where you can pick up every-

thing from adorable party dresses to bracelets

to match every outfit in your closet. The Village Bake Shoppe, where the featured special is the

“mile-high” apple pie made with five pounds of

apples, offers a tempting variety of made-from-

scratch treats, sandwiches and soups.

The final item on our to-do list is a trek through

the Niagara Wine Trail, USA where we

sample two of our favorite things — wine and

chocolate — with a delectable pairing at Black Willow Winery in the hamlet of Burt. On the

drive back to the Canadian border we stop at a

roadside fruit stall where, determined to bring

a taste of our getaway home with us, we load

up the backseat with

fresh corn, seedless

concord grapes,

bubblegum plums

and full-to-bursting

peaches.

Talk about hitting

the sweet spot. v

With a style all its own, the Elmwood Village

is a one-of-a-kind Buffalo neighborhood.

Lined with dozens of fashionable, locally-owned

retailers and crafty shops, the district is a must-

visit during any getaway. Named by the

American Planning Association as one of the

country’s 10 best neighborhoods, there’s no

shortage of new stores, bars and restaurants here.

Aurum Jewelers

HERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT WALKING PAST Aurum Jewelers that makes you stop and smile. It offers that Breakfast at Tiffany’s-Holly Golightly scene that’s seared into every woman’s cinematic memory. You know the one where Hepburn, looking fabulous, peers into the gem-filled window after a night on the town. Sigh.

Aurum is the longest standing retail shop on Elmwood Avenue. With 50 years of experience, owner Paul Michaels has been serving discerning customers in this location for the past 32 years. He opened Aurum at a very special time in Elmwood’s history, when Buffalo local retail legends like L.L. Berger and the Lighting Fixture Company were avenue staples.

Now, that part of Elmwood is part of Buffalo’s rebirth. Michaels’ location on Elmwood offers him front row seats to the new Thin Man Brewery directly across the street. With a ton of action on this strip of Elmwood, from new restaurants to retail, the avenue’s 400-500 block keeps growing.

Despite the nearby changes, the level of customer service at Aurum hasn’t, and never will. It’s all about the customer’s needs and wants, offering the finer side of retail. Along with stunning custom designs, Aurum also carries European antiques and estate jewelry.

Michaels describes his designs as inspired by neo-classical architecture and nature. A love of symmetry shows in his creations. Each piece of jewelry has a story. One of my favorite pieces was a pair of earrings fashioned from vintage lingerie pins. It’s that kind of creative genius that lives here at Aurum. Whether you are looking for a unique ring for a loved one or that special piece of bling for yourself, Aurum will be with you for a lifetime.

ERTEL AVENUE IS HOME TO ONE OF BUFFALO’S best home furnishings and design stores, room. Co-owner and principal designer Michael Poczkalski, aka Michael P., has gained national notoriety, being featured on HGTV and DIY shows. You’ll find the results of Michael P.’s interior design genius spread out across the country, from Buffalo homes to condos in Florida to rehabs in Austin.

You might think that Michael P. took a straight line to his incredible design business, but he arrived there via a six-year detour after receiving his Masters of Architecture degree from the University at Buffalo. He decided to enlist in the Navy and was a nuclear mechanic on ballistic missile submarines. After achieving military success, he returned to his hometown of Buffalo with a new zest for life and design. Michael P. then earned a fellowship to Harvard Graduate School of Design. It was there that he honed his innate sense of style and design and turned it into a widely respected interior design firm of Michael P. Design.

Creativity runs wild within the walls of room. It’s a playground for those hungry for high style in their home. Michael P. and his team of designers are constantly working up artistic window displays and merchandising the retail floor. Walking in is like entering a posh New York City furniture store, as they carry well-known and highly respected brands such as Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, American Leather and GUS Modern. You’ll assuredly fall in love with the luxury of leather, fine woods and stainless steel furniture offered, as well as the comfort of luxurious, color-storied home accessories. What’s more, room also offers the best-designed baby furniture and baby gifts in the area.

Take a seat on any sofa in the store, breath in your surroundings and relax. We have a feeling you’ll be inspired by Michael P. and his collection at room.

Who would’ve thought Buffalo’s first food truck, in six years, could expand to multiple trucks and a brick-and-mortar restaurant? Even further, who could’ve imagined the local taco slingers would be crafting some of the most scrumptious cocktails in the city? Well if their food was any indication, there should have been no doubt. With a zany, Willy Wonka-esque vibe, Lloyd Taco Factory is shaking up the Buffalo beverage game with drinks like the Snozzberry Mule and the ultra-refreshing Gin & Juice, using a house-made juice blend. Lloyd is doing big things on Hertel!

You and your girlfriends can enjoy rustic, regional Italian cuisine in Lombardo’s gorgeous indoor dining room or outside on their landscaped patio during a warm Buffalo evening.

Furnishings

HAT WAS ONCE VACANT HAS NOW been reborn. Take a walk down the 500 block of Main Street. Just a year ago you couldn’t drive down this portion of our main thoroughfare. Buildings desperately needed a creative eye willing to be a catalyst for the community. It takes an active group of individuals to pump new life into an area that’s primarily a weekday working district.

One of those creative individuals is Joe Incao, owner of Furnishings; a gift shop that will single-handedly keep you and your home aesthetically up-to-date. Incao opened about a year ago in the former L.L. Berger department store building on the 500 block of Main Street. “When I came here to look at this space there was nothing on this block. D’Avolio opened, then I opened, then Raclettes, then Jerk’s Soda Fountain & Ice Cream, then Just Fries. The amount of positive change that has happened in 6 months is just amazing. I like to think, what will happen in 6 more months?”, Incao says.

Incao is a Buffalo advocate trying to raise the bar. He’s a part of a community of business owners and developers who are working to change the mentality of Buffalonians and visitors alike. Incao says, “Furnishings opened just a little ahead of the curve for retail in downtown Buffalo, but as soon as people recognize that this is a walkable neighborhood, one that’s perfect for strollers, dog walking and weekend fun, I’m their neighborhood gift and home store.”

Furnishings is the ultimate gift store in downtown, stocked with a curated selection from fun and quirky to modern and sophisticated. There’s something for everyone’s style and budget. Think funky light fixtures, cool Buffalo pillows, imaginative décor and roadie wine glasses.

Incao encourages you to come downtown to shop and experience the New Buffalo shopping scene.

Cheri Amour

VERYONE AND EVERYTHING HAS A STORY in the tiny, historic village of Lewiston - even the boutiques. One that stands out with an especially unique story is Cheri Amour. A destination for all gifts, this jewelry boutique delivers a mantra of strength, peace and love and, true to its story, it all started with a single charm bracelet. In typical Western New York fashion, it is a family affair. Two sisters from Niagara Falls, one on the East coast and the other on the West coast, joined together over their love of Paris and were inspired to open the shop when they spotted a unique bracelet by Italian line, Nominations. Founding the business in 2002, Cheri Clark and Janeanne Winberg have a way with style and their sweet whimsical vibes are represented through their jewelry.

Cheri Amour is always on the cutting edge in the jewelry world. The sisters work as a team. With Winberg living in Reno, she sees all the hot new trends, while Clark manages the shop. With her lovable personality, Clark herself is known as Lewiston’s “Cheri Amour.” This is a full-fledged family run business, from the sisters’ parents who skillfully emblazon their shop’s bags with stickers, bows and intricately folded tissue paper, to close friends that help design their legendary window displays.

Clark says, “A lot of people come to us for something that says something, and a lot of my jewelry says something.” Whether it is a charm bracelet by Alex and Ani to Mantra Bands, or a necklace by local jewelry designer Her Story, every piece comes with a story.

With fourteen successful years in Lewiston, Clark says, “It’s a wonderful community to have your business in, and the people really want to support local.” Not to mention the village’s sumptuous feast of events featuring everything from the likes of the internationally renowned Lewiston Jazz Festival to the Garden Festival, thousands of visitors are attracted annually.

So, go ahead and shop outside the big box for inspired jewelry designs by visiting Lewiston’s Cheri Amour. It’s a “gem” of a story!

EAST AURORAstores with stories

Musejar

HE BIRTHPLACE OF THE ARTS & CRAFTS Movement, the Roycroft Campus and home to the imagineer, Elbert Hubbard, it’s no wonder the creative spirit runs rampant in the quaint Village of East Aurora. Vanessa Frost – owner of MUSEjar, an art supply shop and studio, on Elm Street in the heart of village – is a true torchbearer of that notion of imagination and community.

MUSEjar, opened in 2013, offers not only the materials to be creative, like canvases, sculpting tools and hard-to-find paints, but also carries wares crafted by some of the region’s best makers, jewelers and designers. Frost also offers classes and workshops to help folks discover their inner-artist and meet with other creatives. Workshops range from beginner-level tutorials to in-depth sessions based on calligraphy, Shibori dyeing and much more.

Frost explains, “A place to meet and talk to fellow creatives is more valuable than you think. A place to get ideas and have someone to bounce ideas off of. Or find a book and get inspired by other local artisanal goods. Art is all encompassing and inspiration can come from so many different places.”

And while Frost has lived in many different places, she states that there’s no place she’d have rather planted the seeds of MUSEjar than in East Aurora. She says, “East Aurora has the support of a small town but the energy of a city. The village is alive and filled with so many wonderful and creative people that want to make changes in a new direction. I realized this was a place MUSEjar could thrive. This place truly lives up to ‘it takes a village’.”

As MUSEjar exists by the mantra of “supply, inspire, create”, a stop in the shop will fulfill any needs you have to bring your imagination to life.

LeeLee

ILLIAMSVILLE'S SHOPPING district is alive with great retail shops. LeeLee, a women’s clothing and accessory boutique, has been a staple in the village for 17 years. Owner Lisa Keating, started her career as a lawyer, but always loved fashion. She worked as a business attorney and decided early on she wanted to run her own business, and LeeLee was born.

Naming her shop LeeLee after her childhood nickname, Keating started to explore brands and expanded into clothing. Keating has built her business into a shopping destination, featuring trendy brands Trina Turk, Michael Stars, Nicole Miller, Velvet, and local jewelry designers – Peg’s Hardware and Mahina, just to name a few. LeeLee has over 30 brands for women, ranging from denim and t-shirts to fun party dresses.

When she first opened LeeLee she was a new mom, and says, “There were times I would have Chloe at the shop with me and she would be sleeping in one of the dressing rooms. She’s grown up in retail and helps with all the buying for the store. She now attends Barnard College Columbia University in New York City, where she’s pursuing a degree in economics.”

Keating is happy to see Buffalo and the Village of Williamsville thriving, and says, “I always had faith in Buffalo, both my husband and I chose to stay, live, work and raise our daughter here. It’s incredible to see the change with tourism, even in the Village. Now we see tourists coming into the shop every week. It broadens everyone’s business.”

Allen Street Dress Shop

PITOMIZING THE FEARLESSNESS AND spirit that defines Allentown, The Allen Street Dress Shop is a legend in the Buffalo retail world. With two locations, one in East Aurora and the second on Allen, owner Danielle “Den” Webb, has been on the forefront of curating this indie culture. In 1982, she opened her very first shop in East Aurora with her husband using their college tuition fund. She laughs saying, she “wasn’t college bound, and that the store was her education.” Born into a very supportive family, Den’s grandmother was in the clothing business, and her father was in sales.

The business started to take off and she found herself moving into the Roycroft Inn. The late preservationist and fashion icon, Kitty Turgeon, owner of the Roycroft at the time, gave her a chance to sell items on the porch of the Roycroft. After opening the first shop on Main Street in East Aurora, she was convinced it was time to open another in Allentown.

One thing that sticks out about The Dress Shop is the incredible clients it caters to. Webb’s talent lies in being able to dress all shapes, sizes and ages. Den truly knows how to dress the female body, it’s a talent, and she does it well. As a buyer, Den tries to focus on “bringing in at least 1/3 domestically made product, and tries to put a focus on natural fibers.” She says, “These days I’m finding some of the polyesters to be fantastic, but I believe in linen like nothing else. I think it’s God’s gift.”

Webb has witnessed Allentown’s many transformations and continues to love every minute of the experience. Allentown was built for retail and is extraordinarily diverse in every way. It’s one of the things she loves most about Allentown, and she’s excited to see what happens with the growth and development. Den is passionate about the Allentown community and preserving it for generations to come.

O’CONNELL’S CLOTHING

All the purveyors of style

know O’Connell’s clothing,

located on Main Street

in the student-rich

University Heights.

Established in 1959,

they have been a family-

owned and operated

clothier offering men’s,

women’s, and young

men’s clothing.

Store owner Bernhard Huber has been an influencer in the local

fashion industry for 55+ years. He’s always had the vision and

creativity to withstand Buffalo’s highs and lows, and never once

has compromised on style, quality, and service. Over the years,

Huber’s sons John and Ethan Huber have joined the business.

Today, O’Connell’s Clothing maintains a website that reaches a

worldwide audience and includes both men’s and women’s clothing,

footwear and accessories. There are currently over 8,000 in-stock

items such as blazers, ties and shoes and features fashion heavy-

weights like Barbour, Alden Shoes, Bills Khakis, Quoddy, Salko Coats,

and Marrimekko.

O’Connell’s is not only known for their exclusive top-notch

brands, but also has a coveted private label collection. Huber says,

“The private label is done the way we want them and made in the

USA. We buy the cloth, have it made in four colors and sell it just as

fast as we make them. It’s O’Connell’s because it’s exactly the way we

want it and made to our specs and standards.” This custom O’Connell

product fills the void, which includes everything you ever wanted

and could never find, including that pair of beer and pretzels

embroidered trousers you have been dreaming of…
