Port of Stockton. This meeting seems to have been got up chiefly by Mr. Ch[ruks] Tenant under the idea that it was, a job of the Darlington Rail- way Co. to promote the great Northern Line for the benefit of the Darlington Line, and to the prejudice of the Clarance Line, and he went into [numus] details to prove that this was the case Jas. Harbour. An explosion took place in the Down’s
Explosion Pit Hetton Collieries this Afternoon about 2 o ‘ Down’s Pit Clock P.M. which killed 16 men and Boys
by burning and Suffocation Jany. 29th. Friday Mr. J. Robson the Viewer of Hetton Colliery called upon me at Pensher this Morning to request me to go with Mr. Geo. Hunter to view the Down’s Pit, and to
1836 30. Investigate the cause of the Accident which took place yesterday. I went accordingly and viewed the Pit with Messrs. Geo. Hunter, Jno.
Down’s Pit Appleby, Mr. Jno. Wood & Jno. Robson. Jabez Oliver Accident Mr. Boyd, the Overman & Several of the Deputies
and [Wastermen] were also there. The explosion had taken place in the farther- most N.W. district of the workings, where there are only 8 N. Boards going at present. The Mothergait Board, and her Marrow, are 2 Pill or 64 yards in advance of the other places, the present going headways, with the Flat or plat-
form, where the Tubs are put upon the rollers
being 2 pillars back from the face of those two Mothergait Boards. The Fore Mothergait Board is the Rolly-way. The first of the Air goes up the Rolly-way Board to the fore, and returns down the back Board for 2 Pillars into the going Heads where it falls into the regular Sheths. The return from these 8 Boards [Diagram goes over a Crossing in the Rolly of Air Way Board at 8 Pillars below the Flow] Flat into another division of the workings. The concussion of
[Down’s Pit Air-course]
1836 31
the Explosion blue-up the brick Arch of this Crossing, and immediately took the Air off
Down’s Pit the 8 Boards to the N. of it By this the Accident people were all immersed in the after damp
after the explosion, that is to Say all the people on the In-by Side of the Crossing, and the most of them were Suffocated. The Deputy who had charge of this district had observed during the fore-part of the day that the Trapper at the Door a, had propped the door open, while he went run after and play with the Putters, and had reprimanded him
for it. From all the observations we could
make, and all the information we could gain it appeared that the accident had been occasioned intirely from this door having been Set open by which the back Mothergait Board had been fould, and had fired upon the Hewer when he went in to Commence the back Shift This must evidently have been the case, as he was terribly burnt and killed upon the Spot while the man in the fore board was not burnt, nor ever Saw the Fire, and escaped after having Suffered very much from the
1836 32. effects of the Afterdamp. The Fire had been of very limited extent, and no injury worth mentioning
Down’s Pit was done to the Pit, except the breaking down Accident of the Crossing. During last night the cros-
sing had been repaired, and the Sheth doors Brattice &c. put to rights. We found an Air course of Cub. Feet P. min. passing thro’ the workings, and first examined every place with the Davys, but not finding any appearance of foulness in any of the places, we took the Candles and found the places quite clean and in a working State. The Air-course is not a powerful one, but it is quite Sufficient for working the Pit, which does not make a large quantity of Gas – but will not
admit of any remission or Slackening of
the Current. Found the return at the Furnace very clean. The pit is 12 Ft. drains divided in the middle by a Brattice, into a Coal Shaft & an Engine Shaft. The Coal Shaft is Subdi- vided by a Brattice on Acct. of drawing the large Iron Tubs – one up each quarter. Those two quarter Shafts are the upcast – the Engine
1836 33. Down’s Pit Shaft being down-cast. Observed that one Accident of the quarter Shafts cast down very Strongly
which must injure the general ventilation of the Pit. This was the Case at Backworth Old Pit many years ago.

1836 59. Engineers generally State the Friction on
the Rail-ways, at 9 Hs. P. Ton, but
Dr. Lardner estimates it at 7½ Hs. P. Ton
Dr. Lardner The additional traction on Inclines, is equal to the tendency, the load has to fall down the plane by its’ Gravity. ie. if the rise is 1 Ft. in 100, will give a Weight of 100 tons a tendency to fall down the plane of 1 ton & would therefore add 1 ton to the Force of traction. Now 7½ Hs. is nearly = the 300 part of a Ton it .ʹ. follows that if a Plane rises at the rate of 1 Ft. in 300, or 17½ P. ton to be added to the force of tractions. That is to Say twice as great a force as on a
level. 35 Ft. wd. require 3 times 52½ Ft. 4
times that force, and So on. To ascertain the force necessary to a Load up any given acclivity, we must first take 7½ Hs. P. Ton to overcome the resistance of the Road on a level, and then add 3 Hs. for every 7 Ft. the Plane rises Suppose the Rise to be 70 Ft. P. Mile Friction 7½ Hs. 70 Ft. = 10 times 7 Ft. X 3 30 Total force Required 37½
