Enlightenment• He retired to a life in the forest • He followed a life of meditation • He attained enlightenment • Tought others the path to
enlightenment • Taught the First Wheel of Dharma–Sutra of the Four Noble Truths and others –are the principal source of the Hinayana
Teachings• Second and third Wheels of Dharma–The Perfection of Wisdom Sutras –the Sutra Discriminating the Intention –The main source of the Mahayana–Mahayana = how to attain enlightenment
• Hinayana –explains how to attain liberation from suffering
Four Noble Truths• There are also the four noble
truths 1. Human life has a lot of
suffering2. The cause of suffering is
greed.3. There is an end to suffering4. The way to end suffering is
to follow the Middle Path.
Holy Texts• Tripitaka- one of the earliest
teachings of Buddha • Tripitaka means 3 baskets• Originally written in the
language Pali canon
