THE VILLA’S VOICE | MAY 2016 | 1 VOLUME ELEVEN, ISSUE FIVE MAY 1, 2016 Continues on page 2 JOIN US for a tour of the NATIONAL LIBERTY MUSEUM & Lunch at BUDDAKAN ON Wednesday, August 17, 2016 we are going to the heart of historic Philadelphia for a guided tour of the National Liberty Museum located at 321 Chestnut Street. Visitors to the museum will enjoy stories of heroes and a collection of contemporary art. The museum’s primary art form is glass art, as it makes the point that freedom is as fragile as glass. We will board the bus at the clubhouse at 9:15 AM. Following the tour, we have made a reservation for lunch at Buddakan (at your own expense) 325 Chestnut St. Cost of Tour and Bus: $23. Please deliver your non-refundable check made out to the Villas at Five Ponds Social Club to Aileen Salus, 104 Villa Drive, Tel: 215-441-9339; or, Barbara Kains, 114 Villa Drive, Tel: 215-444-9908. Deadline for reservations June 1, 2016. IMPORTANT BOARD NOTES n THE VILLAS AT FIVE PONDS EXECUTIVE BOARD THE PURPOSE of this communication is to bring all residents “up to speed” with some of the things we are anticipating that will most likely affect the 2017 Villas at Five Ponds monthly. Simply put it appears it will need to be increased. • So far this year, mostly due to the blizzard in January, plus a few street saltings, we are over our 2016 snow budget. And this is without knowing if December 2016 will bring us snow that will require paid services. If we have a “bad” December, we will need to make up those excess dollars spent. • Each year we examine and adjust our reserve funds, our homes roofs, the biggest reserve item, were done with “30 year” shingles, however, we have been advised that the prudent thing to do is consider decreasing the years of life for the roof shingles and fund for slightly more square footage, to allow for waste, in order to be more accurate with our funding. This will require more dollars monthly from all. • As the common areas and commonly owned items get older we find ourselves spending more and more on maintenance and repairs on them. THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK MICHAEL & JUDY MULDAWER performed last summer at The Villas at Five Ponds, and will be returning to perform again on Wednesday, June 15 at 4 PM. The Muldawers are native Philadelphians, living in Albuquerque, NM since 1970, where they recently received the prestigious “Entertainment Duo of the Year” award, presented by the Southwest Pickers Acoustic Music organization. Many of their presentations center on thoroughly researched songs and stories about the Tin Pan Alley era. The June 15th performance will focus on lyricists of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood who helped create the memorable songs of the Great American Songbook, beginning in 1892 and ending in the 1950s. Songs representative of this period will be performed following a short and entertaining self-produced video. The lyricists featured will include Gus Kahn, Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, Oscar Hammerstein, Dorothy Fields, Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter, the latter two who also composed music. The Muldawers will present historical background and biographical stories about these men and women and their collaborations with the more widely known composers. As Jule Styne, one of the best 20th composers of popular music, stated: “A song without words is just a piece of music.” Learn why this is true on June 15th! A sampling of the Muldawer’s past performances can be found on youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbq7tMu40xc Please RSVP to Len Jaffee at 267-934-1383 by June 1st for this FREE preformance. IMPORTANT NOTES—Continued from page 1

This also will require more dollars monthly from all.

• WehaverecentlyhadtoupgradetheFOB,SecurityandFiresystemsa necessary cost.

• Inthespringorearlysummertheoutsidewoodportionofourhomes will be painted. The majority of this will be funded out of our reserve fund, however, some homes will be painted a “bit” early so we can get all of our homes on the same schedule. This will help in the future, since more home being painted at the same time will give us better bargaining power. But this time around some dollars will have to be added to reserve dollars to pay for it.

• Astimehasgoneonwehavehadhaslessvolunteerswillingtodominor repairs and maintenance in and around our clubhouse, this will necessitate us having to hire a maintenance/handyman type person much more frequently. Again, this adds to our expenses.

• Finally, ourCapitalfundsareextremelylow, thesearethefundsusedtobuy things to enhance our property or additions to our clubhouse. Capital Funds basically come from two sources, sales of homes and earnings from the Social group. Frankly, the latter has been on a down turn for the last few years.

We hope by reading this information and understanding it, it will help you not be surprised when at our annual meeting in November 2016 the 2017 monthly is announced an explained most likely at a higher rate.

Home Upkeep SuggestionThe Villas at Five Ponds Executive Board would like to announce a few home up keep items that all residents should be doing.

• Haveyourdryerventprofessionallycleanedout.

• Haveyourpaverpatiopowerwashedandre-sanded.

• Haveyourroofcheckbyarooferforlooseshingles, poppednailsand cracked “rubber boots” that are over the pipes that come out of your roof. By doing this you could prevent future leaks.

• Alsoduringtheblizzardmanyhomesexperiencedwhattheythought were roof leaks, instead it was caused by the high winds and large quantity snow being blown through the brown colored air vents on each roof. Note: There is an improved brown colored air vent available on the market that would make it more difficult, not impossible, to experience the snow or rain coming through them. Some should consider upgrading their air vents using a professional roofer. Note: The Board does not recommend any specific contractor, but here are two contractors who have done roofing in our community;Ray’s Roofing, Ed MCann, Jr. 215-200-4147; Manion Contractor’s, Tom Manion 215-598-7890.

We hope this information helps you keep your home in good condition now and into the future.

Spring Pool ScheduleThis year the cover on the outdoor pool will be removed approximately two weeks earlier than normal, in very early, May. Once the cover is off the outdoor pool, it will be emptied of its re-maining water. Once the pool is totally empty the following work will be performed on it.

• Itwillbeacidwashed.

• Majorcrackswillbefilled.

• Thecopingonthedeckaroundthepoolwillbereplaced. Note: This will also be done around the Spa. After each one of these operations there is drying time required. While the pool is empty we would ask all residents to not go anywhere near its edge. Thank you. Once work on the outdoor pool is completed and everything is dry, it willberefilledwithwater,thistakesalmostthreedays,thenthepumps,filtersandchemicalswillbere-engagedtogettheoutdoorpoolupandrun-ning, prior to Memorial Day Weekend. This is our plan, we will need some cooperation from the weather and thetwoorganizationswhowillperformthework.

SAVE THE DATE! VFP10TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY CRAFT SHOW SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2016     n Paula leder, Craft Show Chair THE VILLAS AT FIVE PONDS 10th Annual Holiday Craft, Art, & Gift Show will take place on Sunday, November 13, 2016. As many of you know, it takes 8 months to plan this event. To start the process, show applications will be emailed out April 30th. I am writing now to ask you to “step up” and help me with planning this show and all it entails. Be a part of the 2016 Craft Show Committee. Lots of support is required to ensure an effective show. Not only on the day of the show which is obvious, but much help is required behind the scenes months before the event. A planning meeting was held on Thursday, April 7th to discuss this year’s show and how people can help. There were 14 people who attended including several new residents; new blood, new ideas, creative thinking—a lot we hope to implement for this year. Some areas in which you can help & special jobs I need to plan in advance are as follows:

Publicity: Emailing publicity notices via internet; distributing flyers; andifeveryonegetsagiftcard/certificatefromafavoritestore,business, restaurant that would be tremendous. If you own or work for a business, please offer to donate gift cards for the Grand Raffles.

• Desperatelyneeded!Ifyouarecomputer“savvy”,thatwouldbe great. Publicity via the internet is “key” in spreading the word about the show.

• Ifthree(3)peoplecouldhelpmewithsendingoutthepublicity that would be a huge help to “spread the word”.

• HelpPaulawiththe18signsthatneeddateschangedand/ortake to the sign company to change the dates.

It really does take the community to help pull this off. We have a reputation for being one of the best run Craft Shows in Bucks & Montgomery County. Last year we had over 150 on a wait list. I can no longer do this show without your help. Whatever you can do, make calls, pick up gifts, wrap packages, email publicity, etc. will be very much appreciated. LET’S RELIVE an incredible moment that recently happened in sports. If you close your eyes and picture 4.7 seconds on the clock ‘till the end of the game. I bet most of you got it already. There he was 4.7 seconds left in regula-tion, dribbling like a demon down the floor, North Carolina’s Marcus Paige having tied the game with a desperate three pointer of his own just moments before, freeing himself just enough to tuck the ball to Kris Jenkinsforashotthatnoonewilleverforget, finallyshakingthesenseoverthelast few moments that everything might fall apart for the Wildcat’s. Remember, they had led by 10 points deep in the second half, and the Tar Heels had whittled that edge to 3 points with just a minute left in regulation. Arcidiacono threw a long pass toward a teammate in an attempt to break a full-court press. The ball sailed out of bounds. North Carolina scored on its ensuing possession to pull with in one. He had made so many clutch plays overthefinal20minutes—takingachargeby North Carolina’s Mikal Bridges on a back door cut dunk to tie the game at 44—scor-ing seven points himself in a 3 minute span to help the Wildcats widen their lead. Now this. And somewhere among the 75,000spectatorsinsidethestadium,JoeArcidiacono—Ryan’sfather:afixtureonthe six telecasts of Villanova games in the NCAA tournament—was surely dying slowly inside. Lastweek,Joehadspokenonthe

phone about all the elements that made this Villanova group so special, the togeth-erness that coach Wright had fostered among his players, and the toughness that allowed them to beat Kansas—the tourna-ment’s No. 1 overall seed—just to get to thefinalfour.WhenRyanmadeseriesoffour free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

“That comes from the complete dis-ciplinethatJayinstills,thatRyanhas,thatJoshHarthas,andthey’vestucktothosekindsofprinciples,”Joesaid.“It’sthatallfor one thing, whatever you want to call it. They never lost that. That all stems from RyanandJayandthesekids.” What was it like to watch Ryan on the four line against Kansas? a reporter asked. I wasjustthinking,“God,Idon’twantthefi-nal chapter to be written that he missed the foulshot,“Joesaid. It’sjustbeenalovefestof great moments for the kid, and now to have the possibly go the other way. It was gut-wrenching. Of the 140-some games he’s played, that was probably the most gut-wrenching. It surely topped it, but for all the agita that his father had to endure, Ryan named the most outstanding of the Final Four after the game, made certain that it was worth it.

It was all worth it. Everyone will rememberthatgorgeousshotbyJenkinsand the sequence that led to it, the sight of Ryan Arcidiacono, touching the basketball for the last time at Villanova, igniting that brilliant moment. This was the best kind of beauty for him and all the Wildcats, the kind that isn’t tinged with “what if’s” and “might have been’s”—the kind that will stay with him forever. One more player deserves a lot of credit, Senior Daniel Ochefu. Headline— “Ochefu comes up big on defense.” Let the record show North Carolina was up 41-34, when Ochefu got the assignment. The box score showed other plays that swung the momentum. Think of Booth doing his thing, andthenRyandoinghis,JoshHartand his free throws. But Daniel Ochefu, put him on that list of things that happened one magical night in Houston. He took the assignment, and you could see it in his eyes, this guy wasn’t going to keep going. Ochefu keeps his head steady as a defender. He defends like a forward, not some lum-bering center. All that work he had done with Villanova’s strength coach—here was the playoff. In the last minute, Ochefu was still onJohnson.AsBoothdrainedacoupleoffree throws to put Villanova up by three, Wright talked with Ochefu. It was clear. Guard him the way he had all night. If he madetheshot,fine.Nothreepointplays.Ochefu did almost have a heart attack. That was part of this, too, how Ochefu thought he could get Marcus Paige, but Paige side stepped him, and Ochefu skidded by him, and Paige drained a three pointer with 4.7 seconds to tie things, and it all goes into the history, too. Now you can open your eyes. We will never forget this one with the Villanova Wildcats.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE NEWS n rose Gold, chair

BUCK’SCOUNTYTRANSPORT has given the Seniors of Bucks County several new rules and regulations that we have to abide by. I have tried to voice our objections to Penn Dot, but to no avail. Besides the price going up, if we want to make more than one stop, there is an extra charge. Now, when using Bucks County Transport, we are allowed only one bus for each event. Therefore we are limited to the number of tickets and people we can accomodate. So if you are planning on signing up for an event, I suggest you get your reservation in early. Don’t get shut out. Unfortunately, we have no control over these new rules, andwejusthavetogrinandbearit! I’m so glad to see that so many of our upcoming events are sold out and there is a waiting list. Don’t hesitate to put your name on the waiting list as it seems that there is always a last minute cancelation. HaveaveryHappyMother’sDay.Enjoy!
