BCOS Meeting and Program
January, 2019
Churchville Nature Center
501 Churchville Lane
Churchville, PA 18966
Show Table Setup-7:00 p.m.
Meeting 7:30 p.m.
Gregory Griffis, Senior
Horticulturist Longwood
Gardens. He first became
aware of orchids in 2009,
studying music education
at West Chester Universi-
ty. He lived close to
Longwood and attended
the 2010 Orchid Show
there, where he purchased his first plant. One plant
quickly became 20. Greg was hooked. In 2010 he
visited Parkside Orchid Nursery for the first time,
and by Summer 2011 he was working part time for
Tom Purviance and John Salventi. He studied un-
der their tutelage while working for them, and
when they sold the nursery in 2012, he was hired
by the new owners as the Grower and Manager of
Parkside Orchid Nursery. He managed Parkside for
one year, before leaving to grow orchids in Hawaii.
He worked for Hilo Orchid Farm for more than a
year, spending a large amount of time working
with Paphiopedilum, as well as Intergeneric On-
cidiinae and Miltoniopsis. At the beginning of
2015 Greg began working as the orchid grower at
Longwood Gardens, where he remains today. At
Longwood there are about 6,100 orchids and some-
where in the range of 2,000 different taxa, for
which Griffis is responsible.
Faye S. Applebaum
LEVITTOWN, PA
Longtime BCOS member, Faye S.
Applebaum, 80, passed away on
Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019. Born in Syd-
ney, Nova Scotia, Faye was a resi-
dent of Levittown for the past 58
years and an active member of the former Temple Sha-
lom of Levittown. She is survived by her husband, past
BCOS president, Allen S. Applebaum; her children and
their spouses, Cheryl and Allen Gorski, and Michael
Applebaum and Mariann Matarese; her siblings, Es-
mond Druker, Selma Cooper and Elaine Podbere, and
her grandchildren, Samuel, Randy, and Sarah Gorski,
and Reese Applebaum. The family respectfully re-
quests memorial contributions to the Fisher Center for
Alzheimer's Research Foundation (alzinfo.org) or the
Jewish National Fund (jnf.org).
She will be deeply missed by her family and friends and
the Bucks County Orchid Society where for many years
she coordinated the hospitality table at meetings. Her
friendliness towards members, guests and new members
will be profoundly missed.
In Memorium
Most people find terrestrial orchids, especially those that go
dormant, terrifying! But they are rather terrific! This
presentation will take a walk around the world to overview
terrestrials from around the world, and we will talk about
the most common and accessible terrestrials and how to
grow them. We will demystify terrestrials and unlock their
beautiful and fascinating possibilities. This presentation is
excellent for orchid growers of all levels, as it reviews
basic culture of these wonderful plants and offers new op-
tions for more advanced growers. Please join the mem-
bership for this most instructive, informative and entertain-
ing presentation.
