CATALOGUES TO ARCHIVES

THE JOHN CHENEVIX TRENCH COLLECTION

John Gordon Chenevix Trench (1920-2004) was editor of Records of Buckinghamshire for seventeen years from 1980 to 1997.

Between 1974 and 1995 he was also the author of eight major papers published in Records, including several on timber-framed buildings which were written jointly with Pauline Fenley. One of these was a definitive account of the County Museum buildings in Aylesbury.

He was a highly competent draughtsman and prepared his own drawings of the buildings that he had surveyed. Known for his expertise in past construction methods and the dating of timber-framed buildings, he was a respected member of the Vernacular Architecture Group.

As a result of his researches, John Chenevix Trench accumulated numerous notebooks, loose papers and drawings, transcriptions of medieval documents, family histories and drawings of historic timber-framed buildings. In 1954 he moved to Coleshill and spent many years researching the settlement and its buildings. A great deal of his archive is on Coleshill and its houses.

When John Chenevix Trench died in 2004 he bequeathed his papers to the Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society. This is the Catalogue of his collection.

The documents listed here are stored in the society's Muniment Room in trhe basement of the County Museum in Church Street, Aylesbury. Any of the documents may be consulted in the society's Library and Reading Room at the Museum on Wednesdays between 10am and 4pm.
