BUCK CREEK UMC NEWSLETTER

MMMMMMMMMMMM…THANKSGIVING…

I love Thanksgiving. It’s the thrill of getting up at 5 a.m. to the sounds of grandma rustling around in the kitchen, grabbing the bird out of the fridge and throwing it into the roaster and then the oven. It’s the thrill of seeing hands slice and dice celery, onions, beans and mash potatoes and make gravy and shoving pies and rolls in and out of the oven.

It’s the sounds and pictures of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It’s the annual cranberry warning by mom: “Be careful with those…they’re hard to remove from my good light green carpeting! I remember when we first moved here and Mammaw dropped a couple right over there…”

It’s the sound of my grandfather, a true Depression baby who is thankful for everything, saying, “Good Lord, look at all of this!” It’s the sound of him, stuffing down another plate and then grandma asking if he has room for dessert. “Maybe…sure…bring over the ice cream, too!”

It’s the sound of all of us cleaning up and then shuffling around the house to try to find a place to nap. It’s the sound of the family, pending good weather, going outside to burn some calories to make room for leftover turkey sandwiches for dinner. It’s the sound of doors slamming and tires peeling out of the driveway as the family leaves to go their separate ways, thankful for the time we had to spend together as a family. Thankful for the hugs and kisses shared; thankful for our health that we could do this once again; thankful that we have the right to gather and eat. (I believe that’s even in the Book of Discipline and a good definition of UMs: a group that gathers and eats.)

And then, as the day is done, it’s the sound of all of us shuffling for the Tums bottle. Thank God for the little things that remind us to be thankful for everything we have…especially assorted fruit flavored Tums!

Peace,..

DEPRESSION IS NOT A DIRTY WORD, PART 4 -fourth and final article in Jill’s series-

One last time: “Complex problems have simple, easy-to-understand wrong answers.” In this final article, I’d like to share some additional thoughts and observations with you. Here are some “goodies” I’ve learned over the years:

Ø Depression is defined as Anger Turned Inward. The idea, though probably it isn’t consciously thought, is to hurt yourself, not others, because in your own thinking, for whatever reason, you feel so worthless and shameful.

Ø Living with depression is like seeing a sunshiny day through a layer of charcoal-gray fog. And when you are talking, suddenly you can stutter or stand there feeling foolish because you’ve lost what you were about to say – your train of thought gets derailed and begins to wander about in a meadow.

Ø It is not how anyone else views an incident, but how the person it happened to sees it and feels about it, that’s important. An incident that seems trivial to an onlooker may be a real “Biggie” to him.

Ø Everyone has issues, big or small, few or many. They may not presently be affecting people’s ability to live their daily lives, but they are there somewhere.

Ø The one who seeks help is the healthiest one in the system, though he may be misunderstood and shamed, and feels awful.

Ø It took a while to get depressed; it may well take a while to get out of it.

Ø “If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got.”

Ø God understands why we act as we do; He knows our hearts and what we’ve had to live through and deal with, and He is MUCH gentler to hurting folks than many Christians are.

Ø Some things that depression is NOT: 1-Catching!, 2-The same thing as “insane” or “nuts” or “crazy,” 3-Hopeless. Most people, with proper treatment, live mostly normal lives (whatever those are).

I hope that with these articles, you can see depression in a different light, as being a medical disease and not a lack in people who suffer

from it, and that as a result, you will understand it better and be more understanding of those of us who have to deal with it. If you have questions or comments, please write to me. JUST FIVE KERNELS... The first winter the Pilgrims spent in their new home was very cold.

Food was in short supply. Some days they had only enough food for each new person to have five kernels of corn for the day. Finally spring came. They planted food and it grew. All the Pilgrims did not die. From then on, when a time of Thanksgiving came around, the Pilgrims put five kernels of corn on each plate to remind themselves of their blessings. Let us also remember:

q The first kernel reminds us of the autumn beauty around us. q The second kernel reminds us of our love for each other. q The third kernel reminds us of God's love and care for us. q The fourth kernel reminds us of our friends. q The fifth kernel reminds us that we are a free people.

THE CUP: SERMON BY MR. DICK STONE Dick Stone began his sermon by having the

congregation greet one another with "Jesus loves you and so do I!" Then he asked wife Kay to pray for him. She asked us to have open hearts, minds and ears as we listened to Dick.

Dick said when first approached to give today's sermon, he did not know what he would speak on, only that the Holy

Spirit would lead him, and it would be about his friend, Jesus. The message came to him when he was looking out the window of his room on the 18th floor of a hotel in Chicago. He saw the city lights and thought about Jesus' words "O Jerusalem, how often have I longed to gather your children under my wings..." as He looked over the city of Jerusalem. How long did Jesus spend in prayer? All night at times as he asked for guidance. Dick told us that many religious pictures influenced him growing up, one in particular being that of Jesus praying in the garden. All through the old testament, the events leading up to the garden were foretold. Dick read from the New Testament Matthew 26: "My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me..." Mark 14: "Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee; remove this cup from me, yet not what I will, but what thou wilt." and Luke 22: "Father, if thou art willing, remove this cup from me; nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done." This is an important story, or we wouldn't find it in all four gospels!

About the cup: C is for critical. Everything in history changed from this moment. Anyone who accepts Jesus will receive eternal life. He made the supreme sacrifice for our sins. God loved us so much that He let His beloved Son perish to bring us everlasting life. This was the period in history that something had to be done for mankind. Jesus has the something. He knew what would happen. He knew Judas was coming to betray him. Jesus knew He would be taken away and tried. He knew His garments would be stripped off, He would be tied to a post and whipped, they would tear His beard and spit in His face. He knew that Barabbas would be released and not He. He knew on the path carrying the cross He would stumble with such a heavy load of sin, and that Simon would take up the cross. He knew He would be nailed to the cross and die.

U is for unavoidable. This event had to happen in history when it did. No one else is sinless and spotless. Jesus is the only one. God hates sin, but God loves sinners. God loves us so much to let this event happen.

P is for permanent. This was an event where everything changed. When the twin towers went down in New York, that was a terrible day, with much change. The day Christ died on the cross, everything changed. There

Page 13: BUCK CREEK UMC NEWSLETTER · THE DURBINS’ NEW ADDRESS Andy & Katrinna Durbin 120 Judy Ct. Nicholasville, KY 40356 . 4 BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS Congrats to all! SHARP Mike Sharp & wife

13

is hope for everyone with the cross. Anyone who rejects Jesus will be lost forever. Jesus: is there any other way??

C is for challenge. Choose this day whom you will serve. There is no other. Jesus chose in the garden. It is still our choice as it was His.

U is for unforgettable. You will never forget the day that you accept the challenge.

P is for privilege and personal. No one can make the decision for you. You must choose. Have faith. You are a child of God. There are no grandchildren of God. You alone make the decision. If you made your choice long ago, then renew or rededicate it. Don't say you have to make changes or you don't have the time. God doesn't measure time. Today is a day of salvation. Even though you have done bad things, God still loves you. He will forgive everything except if you don't have Jesus as your savior. Are you willing to accept the cup? When Jesus took up the cup, it was bitter sweet. Sweet because He knew many would be saved. Bitter because He knew some would not accept Him. Are you willing to accept? Will you tell others about your friend Jesus? Wherever you are, take the opportunity to tell about our friend Jesus.

As we sang "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus", Dick asked those who are willing to take up the cup and tell others about Jesus, to come forward and receive a bittersweet mixture of grape juice and white vinegar. The cup we received smelled sweet, but tasted bitter. The lingering flavor on the tongue though, turned sweet. We've accepted the cup.

Dick closed with prayer and thanked us for letting him share. He had provided a small booklet to everyone entitled "The Cup" with a picture of Jesus in the garden on the front. Inside were blanks to fill in for C U P, His Choice, and Your Choice. What will your choice be?

MISSIONS UPDATE… YOUTH EDUCATIONAL SUPPLIES KITS

Thanks to your generous outpouring, approximately 80 YES kits will soon be shipped to Liberia and Sierra Leone, Africa. The kits (bags sewn by the BCUMC women) contain school supplies and a Bible. In addition, some personal hygiene items, along with teachers’ supplies have also been donated. This is a wonderful example of following our Lord’s teaching to help others. Thanks! FALL INTO MISSIONS

It is time to turn in the ‘Fall Into Missions’ offerings from the booklets created by Ralph & Mindy Rohrer. All of the money received from this

missions giving will be used for local assistance. And a BIG THANKS to Ralph & Mindy for producing the daily challenges for us. ISHE ANESU

Through the VBS offering and a donation from Ladies Missionary, $400 has been given to send 2 children to school in Zimbabwe for a year. Two hundred dollars pays for school tuition, a school uniform, 2 pairs of shoes, tutoring, and one hot meal per day for a year and…learning about our Lord!

The children that are helped would not be able to attend school without support from churches and individuals in our country. We are blessed to be able to help with this mission project.

Please pray about this needed ministry. Perhaps you and your family are being led to support a child?! If so, contact a Missions committee member for more information.

DONOR SABBATH Organ and Tissue Donor Sunday, observed as part of the National Donor

Sabbath, becomes a new United Methodist special Sunday in 2001. It will be observed on November 11, 2001. The United Methodist Church says: We believe that organ transplantation and organ donation are acts of charity, agape love, and self-sacrifice. We recognize the life-giving benefits of organ and other tissue donation and encourage all people of faith to become organ and tissue donors as a part of their love and ministry to others in need. We urge that it be done in an environment of respect for deceased and living donors and for the benefit of the recipients, and following protocols that carefully prevent abuse to donors and their families.

Give the gift of Life. Transplantations save lives, but only if you help. Each day about 60 people receive an organ transplant, but another 16 people on the waiting list die because not enough organs are available.

Religious leaders who participate in discussions of donation with their congregants can affirm that choosing to be an organ and tissue donor offers the opportunity to share the greatest blessing of all -- the gift of life.

As participation in National Donor Sabbath increases and more individuals become aware of donation, one message is repeated time and again: make a decision about being an organ and tissue donor, sign a donor card, indicate your wishes on your driver's license, and tell your family. For a family who has lost a loved one and is considering donation, knowing the loved one's wishes in advance helps provide assurance that the right decision is made.

1. Talk to your family about this important decision. 2. Fill out this donor card and sign your name. 3. Have 2 members of your family sign their names. 4. Carry this card in your purse or wallet where it can be found.

"To Remember Me":

Give my sight to the man who has never seen a sunrise, a baby's face, or love in the eyes of a woman.

Give my heart to a person whose own heart has caused nothing but endless days of pain.

Give my blood to the teenager who was pulled from the wreckage of his car, so that he might live to see his grandchildren play.

Give my kidneys to one who depends on a machine to exist from

week to week. Take my bones, every muscle, every fiber and nerve in my body and

find a way to make a crippled child walk. Explore every corner of my brain. Take my cells, if necessary, and let

them grow so that, someday, a speechless boy will shout at the crack of a bat and a deaf girl will hear the sound of rain against her window...

If you must bury something, let it be my faults, my weaknesses and all prejudice against my fellow man.

Give my sins to the devil. Give my soul to God. If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word

to someone who needs you. If you do all I have asked, I will live forever.

UM NEWS TIDBITS Two hundred forty students, representing 21 African countries, have

enrolled in Africa University's freshman class. Their attendance was marked by an official matriculation ceremony, Sept. 6, at the United Methodist school in Mutare, Zimbabwe. In opening remarks, Vice Chancellor Rukudzo Murapa welcomed all Africans "to a place to call home." He said the university wants to cultivate a sense of responsibility among students and usher in a new culture of peace in Africa. Ambassador Ibrahim Gambari, United Nations undersecretary general, encouraged the students to "aim very high because only the best is good enough for you."

Bishop Felton Edwin May of Washington is asking United Methodists to get out their Christmas candles early and place them in their windows as a sign of hope and a reminder that Jesus is the light of the world! "There's no doubt about it; we are being put to the test," the Baltimore-Washington Conference bishop said during a Sept. 14 prayer service at Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church. "As Christians and a people of faith, the very foundations of our existence are being called into question." May called for a renewed commitment to build communities of shalom and for the world to become such a community. "Let us aggressively pursue the evildoers (and) aggressively determine to train peacemakers in every nation."

Are you a young adult? Upper Room Ministries has launched MethodX.net, a new Web site just for you! “CHUCKWAGON” LUNCH November Harvest Carry in Dinner Changed to Youth Group Fundraiser

As most know, the weather played havoc with the Feast of the Hunter’s Moon’s attendance, leaving our Youth Group with many frozen buffalo burgers. To help solve the over abundance, the Missions carry in dinner is now a fundraiser for the Youth Group this year.

Following worship service on Sunday, November 11th, our Youth Group will hold a ‘Chuckwagon’ Lunch in Fellowship Hall. Buffalo burgers and chili are on the menu.

Over the years, our youth group has used earnings from the Feast to help fund the annual all-church retreat, the Senior Citizens Christmas party, provided funds for a needy family at Christmas time, purchased items for our church…we could go on and on. Our youth have willing reached out to help many, many times. Now…they need our support. Please plan to stay and eat (or get carryouts) and help our youth. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

CHRISTMAS PROJECT Again this year, Buck Creek UMC’s congregation will be adopting

several families to help make their Christmas brighter. We have contracted with the YWCA Domestic Violence and Prevention Program. Names and needed items will be available by mid to late November. The gifts are to be brought to church by Sunday, December 2nd.

Please note: This is several weeks earlier than usual. The YW is coordinating their assistance with other local groups and will be delivering the gifts on December 8th. Stay tuned for more information.

..HOLY HUMOR

.-TOP SECRET: A friend was in front of me coming out of the church one day, and the preacher was standing at the door shaking hands.

He grabbed my friend by the hand and pulled him aside. The Pastor said to him, "You need to join the Army of the Lord!"

My friend replied, "I'm already in the Army of the Lord, Pastor." Pastor questioned, "How come I don't see you except at Christmas

and Easter?" He whispered back, "I'm in the secret service."

DISCIPLE BIBLE CUT-OUT

That’s right. This month’s disciple bible cut-out is Judas. Cut him out and glue him to a thicker surface, such as an index card or piece of cardboard. Then, fold the tabs inward, and he will stand up. If you’ve been collecting the cut-outs throughout the months, you might want to display Judas a little further away from the other cut-outs. ☺ Look for another disciple next month!
