BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Operations and Maintenance Engineering 2016/17
Course Duration: 1 or 2 Years
The course starts in September 2016.
Other start dates are available subject to demand.
OVERVIEW OF THE COURSE
This course can be a stand-alone
qualification for people who have a
specific interest in maintenance
engineering or a component
requirement for an Advanced
Apprenticeship.
It is a nationally recognised
qualification which can lead to
employment as a technician
and also provides progression
to higher level qualifications
including Degree or HND.
How long will it take me to achieve this qualification?
The usual duration for this qualification is 2 academic years .
Some employers wish to fast track learners to HNC and SETA facilitate this with the 1 year 2 days a
week option. This option is very challenging and is only for those learners who are highly motivated and
have very good GCSE results. Many mature learners undertake the 1 year option.
Entry requirements
To undertake this course you must achieve a
minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades A*- C,
including Maths, English Language and a
Science. Due to the content of this
qualification and potential progression GCSE
A*-B is preferred in Maths.
A core element of engineering courses at SETA is
maths. It underpins all that you will do as engineers
from completing calculations for simple electrical
circuits to more complex multistage calculations
and even advanced simultaneous equations when
studying ‘Kirchoffs Laws’.
Whatever level you are studying maths for engineering will be an important part of your course.
BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Operations and Maintenance Engineering 2015/16
What topics will I study?
You will study 6 mandatory units:
• Health and Safety in the Engineering
Workplace,
• Communications for Technicians,
• Mathematics for Engineering Technicians,
• Electrical and Electronic Principles,
• Mechanical Principles
• Applications and Engineering Project
(work based).
The remaining speciality units are typically
• Business Operations in Engineering,
• Properties and Applications of Engineering
Materials,
• Engineering Maintenance Procedures and
Techniques,
• Electrical Technology,
• Further Mechanical Principles and
Applications,
• Engineering Drawing for Technicians
• Further Mathematics for Engineering
Technicians.
Other units are available and actual content can be revised to meet employer needs.
How will I be assessed?
The units are assessed in compliance with the awarding body requirements. Most units use
assignments which can be a mix of theory and practical assessment. Unit achievement is graded as Pass,
Merit or Distinction and the overall qualification is also graded to reflect learners unit achievement.
What our students say….
“When I don’t understand I only have to ask
and it will be explained in different ways
until I understand”
“Good experience”
“It’s really good and fun”
SETA programmes also includes enrichment
activities and industrial visits where possible.
SETA is active in supporting charities and throughout
the academic year fun activities are planned to
support the chosen charities.
All employers are informed about events to ensure
suitability for learners and in many cases support and
involvement from the employers.
