Project Concept

The Project brief is to creating a sleep pod for BT Sports Studio to be located in the workspace of the Here East building. Hear East is situated in Stratford, London. This Geodesic dome has inspiration from my studio project of a technology garden. To link the outside inside with the sport theme in mind, looking into different types of huts and garden architecture, I found myself draw to the polygonal shapes that depicted the football shape. Finally coming up with my design that represents the two in a comfortable manner.

The sleep pod is constructed by a variety of materials Frame:

MDF Struts, this material was chosen as it is good for support but lightweight enough for easy assemble MDF is a medium-desity fibreboard wood product that is made up of broken down hardwood and combined with a resin to form panels.Nuts are good to securing the bolt in placeBolts, are heavy duty and strong to keep the structure together for health and safety issues made of alloy or stainless steel with an ultimate tensile strenght of 160,000 PSI min.

Manufacturing process

Steel Strut Fabricated Fixing

The fabricated fixing will follow the welding process of Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), also known as tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, is an arc welding process that uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld. By welding thin sections of stainless steel and non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, magnesium, and copper alloys. The process grants the operator greater control over the weld allowing any angle and shape to be formed together. The welding is process uses a welding torch and a filler rod to form the two pieces of steel together.

Medium Density Fibreboard Frame & Panels

The Frame of the sleep pod and Panels that will hold the leather will be MDF and manu-facturing process of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is a wood based composite, made

up of soft wood that has been broken down into fibres then resin is added to the fibres, heated and finaly pressed to from panels of MDF. The panels are then cooled, timed and

sanded to the size required.

Leather

The MDF Panels will be wrapped in leather the manufacturing process can be broken down into three the preparatory stages, tanning and crusting. All true leathers will undergo these processes. A further surface coating may be added if needed.
