1. Introduction

Bluetooth Phone Base is a Bluetooth device that connects to PSTN (phone line) and allows user to make or receive calls for terminals such as Bluetooth mobile phone, headset, PDA, smart phone through PSTN. (The mobile phone and PDA shall support hands-free device in the Hands-Free profile.)

Bluetooth Phone Base bridges the gap between mobile devices and wired phone. It allows the mobile device user to take advantage of the convenience and low cost of wired phone. The phone base is the central hub connecting the mobile phones, PDA or headset around it. It is similar to DECT or cordless phone base station. Bluetooth Phone Base also has a build-in dialer function that a user presses one key to replace the long strings of access code and password in the calling cards.

2. Get Start Set up for Home/office phone

1. Connect the power adapter cord to the power jack. All of the base’s indicators will flash once and green LED stays on.

2. Unplug your telephone’s line from your telephone and plug into the base’s socket marked “Line”.

3. Use the supplied telephone cord to connect the Base’s phone jack marked “Ext.” and your telephone.

3. Use with Bluetooth Headset

Before using your Bluetooth headset to receive a call or make a call, you have to pair your headset with phone base first.

3.1 Pair headset with phone base

1. The default PIN code in this phone base is “0000”. If the PIN code in your headset is not “0000”, please go to “Change PIN” at chapter 5.2 and change to your headset PIN.

2. Set your headset on pairing mode. Please refer to the user guide of your Bluetooth headset for details.

3. Press the “Mode” button momentarily (less than one second) and blue LED will flash. The phone base begins looking for pairable headset. After several seconds, phone base is paired with headset and blue LED stop flashing. At the same time, your headset LED or tone will indicate that it is also paired with phone base.

4. To avoid phone base pair with unintended device, make sure no other headset or other Bluetooth device is in the neighborhood.

3.2 Answer a call

1. When the phone base rings, it alerts your headset. The orange LED will flash and blue LED stays on.

2. You may hear audible tone in headset. Press “Talk” key in your headset to answer the call. The blue LED will flash and orange LED stays on.

3.3 Make a call 1. Attach a regular telephone set to the phone base. 2. Press the Talk key in your headset. (Some Bluetooth headsets may

not support this feature.) The blue LED is flashing and orange LED stays on.

3. Pick up the phone handle and dial a number. You will hear dialed tones in the headset.

4. Put back phone handle and use the headset to talk. 3.4 When phone base is paired with two or more headsets.

The phone base can be paired with 4 Bluetooth headsets or hands-free. The phone base always looks for the most recent paired device. If it is absent or power-off, the base will search for the next recent paired device and so on.

4. Use with Bluetooth Hands-free

Before using your Bluetooth hands-free to receive a call or make a call, you have to pair your hands-free with phone base first.

4.1 Pair hands-free with phone base

1. The default PIN code in this phone base is “0000”. If the PIN code in your hands-free is not “0000”, please go to “Change PIN” at chapter 5.2 and change to your hands-free PIN.

2. Set your hands-free on pairing mode. Please refer to the user guide of your Bluetooth hands-free for details.

3. Press the “Mode” button momentarily (less than one second) and blue LED will blink. The phone base begins looking for pairable hands-free. After several seconds, phone base is paired with headset and blue LED stop flashing. At the same time, your hands-free LED or tone will indicate that it is also paired with phone base.

4.2 Answer a call

4.4 When phone base is paired with two or more hands-free The phone base can be paired with 4 Bluetooth headsets or hands-free. The phone base always looks for the most recent paired device. If it is absent or power-off, the base will search for the next recent paired device and so on.

5. Configuration

You need a Bluetooth enabled PC, Notebook or PDA to configure the phone base. The Bluetooth phone base configuration utility allows you to:

1. Change PIN 2. Enter calling card number 3. Edit phone lists 4. View the Bluetooth address of paired devices

Before you configure the phone base, you have to set up a Bluetooth link between PC/Notebook and phone base.

5.1 Initial set up Please do the following steps to set up a Bluetooth link between PC/Notebook and phone base:

1. Press “Mode” button for at least 4 seconds. The phone base will enter Configuration Mode. The yellow LED will flash and blue LED stays off.

2. Use Bluetooth software (e.g. Widcomm BTW or Toshiba Bluetooth Stack) to search the phone base.

3. Select the phone base and choose the serial port profile. 4. If the PIN code is required, it is “0000”. 5. The Bluetooth software will provide a virtual COM port, e.g. COM5. 6. Run the Bluetooth configuration utility. 7. Choose the COM port to the port provided by your Bluetooth

software. 8. Press “Connect” button in the utility. 9. Then you are ready to modify the parameters in the phone base.

5.2 Change PIN

The default PIN code for the Bluetooth headset or hands-free is “0000”. If not, you need to change this item to meet your Bluetooth required PIN:

1. Follow the initial set up in 5.1. 2. Click on the PIN item in function box. 3. Type in the required PIN. 4. Press “Save” to store PIN into phone base. 5. Press “Disconnect” to leave the configuration mode.

5.3 Enter calling card number A typical calling card has four items: local access number, language selection, card number and password. The dialing instruction in your calling card may ask you to dial local number first, followed by language selection. Then you need to key in card number ended with “#” key and password ended with “#” key. After that, you dial the number that you want to call. When a pause is needed, type in a space key. Each space key stroke represents one-second pause.

1. Follow the initial set up in 5.1. 2. Click on the Calling Card Number item in function box. 3. Type in each item. 4. Press “Save” to store it.

Suppose that you are in office and you need to press “0” to get the outside line. In a calling card, the access number is 1111-2222, language selection is 1 for English, 2 for Spanish. The card number is 3333-4444-5555+”#” and the password is 6666+”#”.

Here is an example:

Access Code: “0 11112222” (one space key between 0 and 1) Language: “ 1” (three space keys before 1) Card No.: “333344445555#”

PIN No: “6666#”

5.4 Edit phone lists

The phone base can record missed calls, dialed calls and received calls. Each call category can store up to four numbers.

1. Follow the initial set up in 5.1. 2. Click on the Missed Call or Dialed Call or Received Call item in

function box. 3. Edit the number. 4. Press “Save” to store it.

This function enables you to use the keyless hands-free to make a call.

5.5 View the Bluetooth address of paired devices

You can use this item to verify pairing of your Bluetooth headset or hands-free.

1. Follow the initial set up in 5.1. 2. Click on the Paired Device item in function box. 3. The menu will show the Bluetooth address of paired devices. 4. If you want to remove the pairing of a particular device, select such

device in the list and press “Del”. Note: You need to do the paring

again if you want to use such device again. 6. Use calling card

You need to store calling card numbers first: 1. Follow the procedures in 5.3 2. Pair your hands-free with phone base as in 3.1 3. Press “#” key first before you dial the desired number. 4. Dial the desired number in your hands-free. Press “Send” key. 5. The orange LED will stay on and blue LED will flash. 6. Use hands-free to talk.

Example: suppose you have a calling card like Sec. 5.3 and have typed in all numbers. The number you want to call is 0021-408-123-4567. When you dial “#00214081234567” and press “Send” key, the phone base will dial:

“0 11112222 1333344445555#6666#00214081234567”

7. Operation Mode

The phone base has five different modes which are indicated by orange LED and blue LED in various status. Table 1 lists the LED status in different modes

8. Troubleshooting 1. When phone base rings, my headset or hands-free can not answer the call

Make sure that the phone line is in right phone jack marked “Line” Make sure that your device is paired with phone base. See Sec. 3.1 or

4.1. Make sure that your device is turned on. Make sure that your device is within the coverage of phone base.

2. I use my notebook PC to configure my phone base, but I can’t change any value. Make sure that your notebook PC is Bluetooth enabled. That is, it has

a built-in Bluetooth or external Bluetooth adapter. Follow Sec. 5.1 to set up a Bluetooth link with phone base Choose the right COM port in configuration utility.
