G a m e N o t e s / Q u i c k F a c t sThe Dragons: The Dragons bring a 3-0 record into NSIC play as it has posted three home wins against Valley City State (80-65), Mayville State (71-45) and Concordia College (96-56). MSU Moorhead has a +27.0 points and +13.3 rebounds margin on its opponents this season. The Dragons have committed an average of 13.7 turnovers per game, but have also forced their opponents to 13.7 turnovers per contest. MSUM has been led in points and rebounds by Jake Lindfors twice this season as he leads the team in points per game with 18.0. He has also added 7.7 rebounds per contest. The Dragons are guided by sec-ond year head coach Chad Walthall.

All-TimeSeriesvstheDragons: The Beavers and Dragons have a storied history that dates back to 1928 with the teams facing off on 167 occasions and serving as BSU’s longest rivalry. The Beavers trail 86-81 (.485) in the all-time series and have struggled as of late with a 1-4 record in the last five contests. Last season MSU Moorhead edged BSU 60-58 at the BSU Gymnasium and won 70-62 at the Fieldhouse. Head coach Matt Bowen holds a 2-7 record against the Dragons.

The Golden Eagles: The Golden Eagles are 3-0 to start the season, getting road wins at Northland International University (91-51) and St. Scholastica (79-53) and downing Crown College at home Nov. 29 82-47. UMC has outscored its opponents by a +33.7 margin and is cleaning up the glass by a +16.0 margin. The Golden Eagles are led by senior Akeem Cubie’s 17.0 points and 5.0 points per game. UMC is coached by Jeff Oseth, who is in his 10th year at Minnesota, Crookston.

All-Time Series vs the Golden Eagles: The Beavers hold a strong 37-13 (.740) advan-tage over the Golden Eagles in a history that dates back to 1922. Since UMC joined the NSIC in 1999, BSU is 21-4, including six straight. Last season the Beavers won the two games against UMC by a +16 margin (86.5-70.5). Head coach Matt Bowen is 8-1 against the Golden Eagles in his six seasons at BSU.

NSIC Preseason Poll: For the first time since 2006, the Bemidji State University men’s basketball team is ranked in the top eight in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Beavers were tabbed seventh (82 points) Oct. 26 in the 2011-12 edition of the coaches’ tally after finishing last season in a three-way tie for 10th in the final regular-season rankings with a 11-15 overall and 8-14 conference record.

BSU’s Player to Watch: Senior James Ellisor averaged 17.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and shot 57.9 percent from the field in 2010-11 to earn Second-Team All-NSIC honors. He led the NSIC in field goal percentage, while ranking in the top 10 in steals (4th, 1.6 spg), blocks (T6th, 0.9 bpg), scoring (7th) and rebounding (9th). He started 25 of 26 games for BSU and posted ten 20-plus scoring games and recorded double-figures in all but two contests. Nationally, Ellisor ranked 32nd in field goal percentage.

Welcome to the Upper Midwest: The Beavers boast four players from Arizona and one from California on the 2011-12 roster. Seniors James Ellisor (Glendale, Ariz.) and Ryan Kinnell (Yuma, Ariz.) are in their second season at BSU, while it marks the first for ju-nior transfers Dermaine Crockrell (Mesa, Ariz.) and Jason Edwards (Phoenix, Ariz.) and freshman Dillon Floyd (Palm Springs, Calif.).

5-1 Start: The Beavers are off to a 5-1 start, the best since the 1997-98 team went 5-1 to open the campaign. BSU is also on a five-game winning streak to match its longest run under head coach Matt Bowen (Feb. 12-24, 2010). The last time the Beavers started 6-1 or better was the 1973-74 season when that team went 8-0 to open the campaign. The last time BSU won six or more games in a row was when the 2004-05 squad posted seven straight from Jan. 22-Feb. 18.

Against Ranked Opponents: The Beavers got tested right out of the gates this season with a contest at then-No. 10 Metro State Nov. 11 in the season opener, as it fell 71-60. In 2010-11 the Beavers were 0-3 against ranked opponents and are 3-15 under head coach Matt Bowen. The last time BSU defeated a ranked opponent was at Winona State Uni-versity Dec. 12, 2009 when the Beavers upset the Warriors 88-87 in overtime.

Thanks for the Charity: Last season, the Beavers finished as the No. 2 team nationally in Division II in free throw percentage (Final NCAA Statistics Summary), shooting 78.9 percent from the charity stripe. This season’s edition struggled from the line in the opening two games of the season, shooting just 55.6 percent. BSU currently owns a 63.6 percentage from the line this season (63-of-99).

N o t e s / B S U R e c o r d W h e n . . . Gotta Win the Close Ones: In a league as competitive as the NSIC, winning the close games is crucial to separate the non-playoff teams from the postseason contenders. Last season, the Beavers were 3-7 in games decided by five points or less. In 2011-12, BSU is 1-0 in games decided by five points or less.

Helping Hand: With a dish to Patrick Cassidy in the opening minutes of the 87-82 loss to No. 15 Minnesota State Jan. 21, 2011, senior Bryce Tesdahl became the school’s career assist leader (1976-present). The assist was the 315th of his career, surpassing David Lee (1984-88). He finished first in the league and No. 9 in the nation in assists (6.0 apg) last season. He had four 10+ assist games last season and has six in his career. His 156 assists last year finished second on BSU’s top season assists chart.

NSIC Player of the Week: Senior James Ellisor was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week Nov. 21 by the league office for his efforts in the 68-49 home opener victory Nov. 20 against University of Sioux Falls. He scored 27 points, added a career-high 15 rebounds, went 11-for-18 (61.15) from the field, 1-for-2 (50%) from 3-point land and 4-for-5 (80%) from the charity stripe. He also added a game-high four assists and tied game-highs in steals (2) and blocks (2). In 36 minutes of playing time he only turned the ball over once. It was the first-career honor for Ellisor and the third time under head coach Matt Bowen a player was recognized by the league with the weekly award (Seth Haake in 2009 and Lance Rongstad in 2010).

Nice Finish: The Bemidji State University men’s basketball team closed the final 7:12 of regulation on a 20-3 run to cruise to a 68-49 home opening victory against University of Sioux Falls Nov. 20 at the BSU Gymnasium. Senior James Ellisor started the run by converting on an old-fashioned three-point play. The Cougars came back on their next possession and found a bucket underneath, but as it would turn out, it would be the last field goal USF would score for the rest of the game. Junior Jason Edwards knocked down a 3-pointer to hand the Beavers 53-48 lead with 6:14 remaining. On the other end of the floor, sophomore Maxie Rosenbloom put his body on the line and took a charge in the lane, then he came down and knocked down his first-career 3-pointer on his first-career attempt to hand the home team a 56-48 lead with 5:28 left. It was off to the races at that point, as the Beavers got more key stops on defense and were rolling on offensive end. The Cougars’ only other point came on free throw with 24 seconds remaining.

Double the Pleasure, Double the Fun: The Beavers have one double-double so far this season, which came from senior James Ellisor when he posted his second 27 point performance of the season, while adding a career-high 15 rebounds against University of Sioux Falls Nov. 20.

Roaring 20’s: Ellisor is the only Beaver to score 20 or more points this season and he has done it in four of the six games, posting 27 points twice (at Metro State and vs Sioux Falls), while scoring 26 against Michigan Tech and 22 against Minot State.

Welcome to the BSU Three Party: The Beavers have hit at least five 3-pointers in all six games this season to total 43 on the season, an average of 7.2 a game. BSU is shooting at a 37.1 percent clip from beyond the arc (43-for-116).

D-UP!: BSU has only allowed its opponent to shoot over 43 percent on one occasion this season and in total have held the opposing jersey to a 39.8 percentage from the field this season. The Beavers held University of Sioux Falls to a season-low 25.9 percent Nov. 20. Behind the arc BSU’s opponents are 30-for-91 for a 33.0 percentage.

Since taking his post as head men’s basketball coach at Bemidji State in 2006, Matt Bowen has led the Beaver program to improvements both on and off the court. Becoming the 19th head men’s basketball coach at BSU June 30, 2006, Bowen now enters his sixth season at the helm after spending 15 years as an assistant coach at the Division I level. The Beavers finished the 2010-11 season with a 11-15 overall and 8-14 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record to finish in a three-way tie for 10th and just a game out of eighth. BSU started the season 3-1, but spent most of the season trying to find a rhythm. The Beavers hovered around .500 until dropping seven straight games Jan. 14 - Feb. 5. Four of those losses came by a five point or less margin. BSU finished the season on a high note, winning four of the last six games, including a 60-58 victory at Winona State to defeat the Warriors for the second consecutive season on their home court. Close games proved to be the difference maker for the Beavers as they closed the campaign with a 3-7 record in games decided by five points or less. Newcomer James Ellisor made an immediate impact by averaging 17.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and a league leading 57.9 field goal percentage to earn Second-Team All-NSIC honors. Bryce Tesdahl continued to dish out assists and became the program’s assist leader. Bowen has molded his team into opportunistic shooters from the free throw line, as the squad closed the season second in the nation in free throw percentage with a 78.9 percent mark from the charity stripe. Bowen earned his first double-digit win season in 2009-10 as the Beavers went 12-15 overall and 8-12 in the NSIC, finishing 11th in the conference. BSU had its ups and downs during the 2009-10 campaign, hanging its hat on sweeping Winona State University for the first time since 2003-04. WSU was ranked No. 17 nationally in the first meeting in Winona where the Beavers needed overtime, then at the BSU Gymnasium, BSU prevailed in a nail-bitter 88-86. The Beavers started 5-3, their best eight-game start since the 1997-98 season. After starting strong the youth and short bench slowed BSU and it lost seven straight and were 2-11 from Dec. 13 - Feb. 6. The Beavers found a rhythm at the end of the season, closing the campaign winning five of six. Bowen saw his first four-year player graduate at the end of the season in Seth Haake, who finished 10th in career points and career assists at BSU, leading the team off the court as a two-time NSIC Academic All-Conference team member. Bryce Tesdahl had one of the best performances in the green and white at the point guard position, finishing fourth in the school’s season assists charts with 137, while leading the team in rebounds and finishing 28th in the nation in free throw percentage. Tesdahl wasn’t the only one hitting from the charity stripe as the squad finished fifth nationally in free throw percentage. Academically, BSU closed the 2009-10 season with a team GPA of 3.03. In 2008-09, BSU went 8-19 overall and 6-14 in the NSIC, finishing tied for 10th. Bowen guided his team to a 6-21 overall record and a 3-15 record in the NSIC for a ninth place finish in 2007-08 and was 5-23 overall and 5-13 in the NSIC in 2006-07. Bowen inherited a 2005-06 team that went 15-13 overall and 9-5 in the NSIC that was dismantled at the conclu-sion of the season, carrying over just three players. In the process of rebuilding there are bumps along the road, but the Beavers are moving in the right direction, defeating back-to-back nationally ranked opponents during a four-game winning streak in 2008-09 (Jan. 6-16). BSU beat No. 24 St. Cloud State University at home, 69-66, and then traveled to No. 11 Northern State University and won a two overtime thriller 100-93. In the process of rebuilding, Bowen and his staff have recruited and brought in some of the best talent from around the state of Minnesota to help put the pieces of the BSU men’s basketball program back together. Bowen came to BSU after spending the past 15 years molding his coaching style after some of NCAA Division I men’s basketball’s greatest coaching legends. He was a student manager for Bob Knight at Indiana University and served as an assistant coach under both Gene Bartow at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and most recently, Homer Drew at Valparaiso University. Bowen’s trio of mentors have combined for nearly 2,100 career wins and 105 years of head coaching experience. During his four years under Drew at Valpo, Bowen helped to lead the Crusaders to an overall record of 70-52 (.574) with a 41-21 (.661) mark versus Mid-Continent Conference competition. In 2003, his first season at the university, the team was 20-11 overall and 12-2 in the league as it grabbed the front end of back-to-back conference titles. The Valpo men capped the year off with a trip to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). The following season, the Crusaders went 18-13 overall with an 11-5 mark versus the league to earn their second league crown and a berth into the NCAA Tournament. In addition to game day and practice duties, Bowen was responsible for organizing all recruiting efforts, summer youth camps, game preparation and scouting and being the team’s academic coordinator. As a recruiter, Bowen was responsible for signing the No. 1 incoming class in the Mid-Continent Conference and one of the Top-100 nationally according to the 2006 HoopScoop and Dave Telep recruiting publications. Bowen’s ties to the Midwest, specifically Minnesota, were evident in the class as it was headlined by Mr. Basketball Minnesota Finalist and Tartan High School graduate Urule Igbavboa. Bowen began his collegiate coaching ventures in 1995 when he was hired as an assistant coach at Alabama-Birmingham. In seven seasons at UAB, the Blazers captured a Conference USA National Division Championship (1999), went to the NCAA Tournament (1999) and were twice invited to participate in the NIT (1997, 1998). The River Falls, Wis. native is the son of long-time NCAA Division III head men’s basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Bowen has been around basketball all of his life, but he first acquired a taste of his own for collegiate basketball as the student manager for Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers (1990-1995). While serving under coach Knight, Bowen was a part of two Big Ten titles (1991, 1993) and four NCAA Tournament appearances, twice advancing to the Elite Eight (1992-1993) and earning a spot in the Final Four in 1992. He joins a long list of former Indiana managers who have gone on to make a name for themselves in coaching, most notably former New Jersey Nets Head Coach Lawrence Frank, a manager at IU from 1989 to 1992. While at Indiana, Bowen also worked directly with George David, now the Director of Player Personnel for the Detroit Pistons and Ryan Carr, Director of Scouting for the Indiana Pacers. In addition, Bowen’s father, Rick, got his feet wet as a Hoosier student manager under Branch McCracken in the 1960s. Bowen is a 1995 graduate of Indiana with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER). He picked up a Master of Arts degree in education during his time at UAB, graduating in 1999. Bowen and his wife Ashli have a nine-year-old daughter McKenzi and a four-year-old daughter Addison.
