National Therapeutic Systems clinic opens in Brookfield

BROOKFIELD – National Therapeutic Systems, a physical therapy clinic and medical supply business, opened its doors July 20 in the village of Brookfield.

The clinic recently moved to the village

from Westchester into a storefront at 9132 W. Ogden Ave.

Robert G. Ingrisano, president of National Therapeutic Systems, said that being an independent businesses allows staff more personal care with their clients, according to a news release.

“Our clients have come to expect that personal touch and we provide it,” Ingrisa-no said. “It’s our trademark and explains why our clients return any time they need our services and recommend us to their friends, family and acquaintances.”

Riverfest to replace annual Steak FryBy JOE SINOPOLI

RIVERSIDE – The first Riverfest in the Park in Riverside is in its fi-nal stages of planning, and Riverside Chamber of Commerce officials are hopeful it will become an annual event in the village.

The one-day event will be held in downtown Riverside from 5 to 10:30 p.m. July 25 along East Avenue and Centennial Park, home of the village’s historic water tower.

Fashioned after a city street festi-val, local food vendors will offer small-sized portions of their fare, much in the manner of Chicago’s Taste of Chi-cago event.

The Riverside Chamber of Com-merce also will host a beer and wine tent.

Entertainment will be provided by 1980s cover bad, Midnight, from 6 to 10 p.m.

Riverside Chamber of Commerce spokesman Joe La Mantia said River-fest will replace the annual Steak Fry

as the chamber’s primary fundrais-ing event.

“We wanted to kind of open it up to more families,” La Mantia said. “The Steak Fry was getting a little dated, so we decided to do something different that more people would want to attend.”

La Mantia said many sponsorships have been obtained from area business-es and raffle prizes have been donated.

Riverside’s 50/50 tree program underwaySUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

RIVERSIDE – The village in the forest is offering its residents a way to contribute to keeping it nice and leafy green.

Through the Cooperative Tree Planting Program, the village of River-side is offering a 50/50 price matching deal that will cover half the cost of all trees planted on the parkway and pub-lic setback.

The cost share is not applicable to

public park areas, according to the village.

Tree prices differ based on the tree species selected, sizes available and the nursery or grower providing the plant material. All prices include tree planting, mulch and delivery, along with the initial watering of the tree in-stalled.

Residents are required to water the tree after initial installation to ensure survival and growth.

There are many different trees to

pick from, including northern catalpa, eastern white pine, American horn-beam or blue birch, burr oak, Ken-tucky coffee, hackberry, accolade elm, redmond linden and sentry ginkgo.

Tree descriptions and order forms are available at the village’s main of-fice or through the village’s website at www.riverside.il.us. Residents should look under the quick links section on the site’s front page.

Orders will be accepted on a first- come, first-served basis and must be

received by Aug. 3.Forms can be mailed or brought to

the Riverside village offices, 27 River-side Road.

Payments may be refunded if the village is unable to install the tree be-cause of utility conflicts or unforeseen issues.

Brookfield Public Library appoints Burghgraef to Board of TrusteesBy DAVID LANZAFAME

BROOKFIELD – The Brookfield Public Library Board of Trustees named Adam Burghgraef its newest member.

Burghgraef, who will be sworn in during the July 22 board meeting, will fill the vacancy left by trustee Judith

Sweet, who resigned in June for health reasons.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Burgh-graef said. “I think it’s good to help your community.”

A resident of Brookfield for seven years, Burghgraef served the Brook-field Public Library’s Facility Adviso-ry committee since 2014 using his expe-rience as a licensed architect.

According to Burghgraef, he helped the board on architectural projects by acting as an interpreter between the library board and the hired architect.

“I was helping to describe the pro-cess and present solutions and assist in communicating what the problem was to the architect [and] I wanted to help communicate what they were solving,” he said.

Burghgraef earned his bachelor’s degree in architectural studies in 2002 from the University of Illinois, Chicago.

“Throughout my professional career I’ve learned the importance of public service and the time commitment nec-essary for meaningful impact,” Burgh-graef said in a letter to fellow trustees.

Burghgraef’s term will expire in April 2017.

Cook County Commission-er Elizabeth Doody Gorman announced her resignation from the Cook County Board of Commissioners during a special board meeting July 15, accord-ing to a news release from her office.

Gorman said her resignation would be ef-fective July 20.

In the release, Gorman said she was resigning to take a posi-tion with a Fortune 100 compa-ny in Chicago.

Gorman represented Cook County’s 17th District for nearly 13 years on the board.

Her district includes all of Indian Head Park, La Grange Park, Lemont, Riverside and Willow Springs and parts of Bensenville, Berkeley, Brook-field, Burr Ridge, Country-side, Hillside, Hinsdale, Hod-gkins, La Grange, Oak Brook, Westchester and Western Springs.

BROOKFIELD – Those looking to make a donation to the American Founda-tion for Suicide Prevention can stop by For The Birds, a boutique selling bird feeders and bird-watching supplies, during July to contribute.

Through the end of the month, For The Birds, 9207 Broadway Ave., will donate 20 percent of every purchase

to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, if a patron mentions the organi-zation.

“We’re running it until the end of the month,” said Keith Brennan, owner of For The Birds. “I’ll be sending a check to the organization at the end of the month.”

According to Brennan, he decided to donate to the orga-nization after speaking to Al-yssa Relyea, a board member with the American Founda-

tion for Suicide Prevention.“I was shopping there last

fall and mentioned that I was busy with the event, and he of-fered to have the fundraiser,” Relyea said. “I took him up on it this year.”

For Brennan, it’s a chance to give back to the community.

“In talking to [Relyea], it seems like a good organiza-tion to give back to,” Brennan said. “If this can help families or people struggling with this issue, I’m glad to do it.”

RIVERSIDE – State Rep. Michael L. Zalewski, D-Riv-erside, said he is working to make sure services for disabled citizens, as well as the safety of communities he represents, are not hurt by what he called “Gov. Bruce Rauner’s government shut-down.”

The Illinois representative stated in a news release that Rauner vetoed a budget that ensured programs to enforce safety, protect crime victims and provide care to people with disabilities were contin-ued.

Zalewski said the govern-ment shutdown put those peo-ple’s lives at risk.

Zalewski said he voted in

favor of an essentials services budget that would continue salaries to probationary offi-cers, and costs related to GPS tracking of sex offenders and protective services for chil-dren for child endangerment and neglect cases.

He said he also voted for legislation that would contin-ue funding for care services for people with developmen-tal and physical disabilities and epilepsy.

Police: Lyons man identified as bicyclist struck by Metra trainBy JUAN PABLO GARCIA [email protected]

RIVERSIDE – A Lyons man has been identified as the bi-cyclist who died after he was struck by a Metra train July 14 at the Harlem Avenue crossing, according to a Riverside Police Department news release.

About 6:40 p.m., Jose Ar-guello, 24, of the 7300 block of West Pershing Road in Lyons,

was traveling south on Harlem Avenue when he approached the railroad crossing. A train was stopped at the Harlem station on the far north track, blocking approximately three quarters of the roadway, ac-cording to Riverside police.

Although the crossing gates were down and the lights were flashing, Arguello went around the gates and attempt-ed to cross the tracks. He was

struck and killed by an eight-car express Metra train travel-ing on the center track, accord-ing to the news release.

The train went into emer-gency braking but was unable to stop, according to the news release.

The Riverside police inves-tigation determined Arguello was wearing headphones at the time of the accident, the re-lease stated.

There were several witnesses and police received multiple calls reporting the incident. When the first officer arrived at the scene, he found the two trains and a body with severe trauma and no signs of life lying across the center track, halfway between Harlem Avenue and Delaplaine Road, according to the release.

“The investigation took over three hours at the scene as the impact at the crash site

was severe and the trauma in-volved in this situation was ex-treme,” Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said.

The passengers of the train involved in the accident disem-barked at the Delaplaine Road crossing with assistance from police. Authorities stopped railroad traffic and shut down the grade crossing while police conducted the investigation, the news release said.

Police: Maywood man arrested after evading police during high-speed chaseSUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

RIVERSIDE – Riverside po-lice recently arrested a May-wood man who allegedly fled from an officer in May follow-ing a traffic stop for speeding, according to a Riverside Police Department news release.

Giovanni J. Collier, 22, of the 100 block of South 14th Avenue in Maywood, was ar-rested at 2 p.m. July 13 at the Cook County Maybrook Court-house. Collier was exiting the courthouse after appearing for another traffic related of-

fense, according to Riverside po-lice.

He has been charged with aggravated flee-ing and eluding police, speeding, improper lane usage, improper overtaking, disobeying a traf-fic control device and driving with a suspended license, ac-cording to the release.

The incident that led to the arrest happened at 10:35 p.m. May 23 after a Riverside police

officer attempted to stop a 2001 Lexus for driving 58 mph in a 35 mph zone while heading north-bound on First Avenue at For-est Avenue, the release stated.

The officer pulled up next to the vehicle, asked the driv-er to pull over and turned the emergency lights on. The Lex-us pulled to the curb, but when the officer got out of the car, the Lexus fled north on First Avenue. The officer attempted to stop the driver again at 31st Street and later at Golf View Road to no avail, according to police.

The vehicle then increased its speed to 100 mph. When the pursuit reached 26th Street, the Lexus was doing 126 mph, at which point the officer end-ed the chase, according to the news release.

Police were able to track the vehicle registration to a residence in Maywood, but were unable to locate the driv-er or the vehicle at the last known residence, a relative’s residence or the last known location of employment, ac-cording to the Riverside Police Department.

In the last month, howev-er, Riverside police received information that Collier had been arrested by North River-side Police Department on a traffic related offense and was due to appear in court July 13. He was arrested as he exited Maybrook Courthouse, ac-cording to the news release.

Collier told investigators he disposed of the Lexus knowing that police would be looking for it, and that the car was ru-ined because of the high-speed chase, rendering it undrive-able, according to the release.

RIVERSIDE – A traffic stop for a speeding violation led to charges for a Chicago man at 9:40 p.m. July 15 for possession of heroin and possession of marijuana at Harlem Avenue and Longcommon Road in Riv-erside.

Police reported that a Riv-erside police officer stopped a black 1999 Buick that was driving 52 mph in a 35 mph zone.

The officer reported he could smell marijuana as he

approached the vehicle to talk to the driver, later identified as Gregory Turner Jr., 27, of the 4900 block of West Huron Street, Chicago.

When the officer inquired whether the driver had smoked marijuana or had any in his possession, Turner al-legedly said any drugs that police might find in his vehi-cle were left there by his girl-friend.

Turner was arrested and transported to the Riverside Police Station for questioning.

According to police, a

search of the vehicle’s trunk found 54 indi-vidually packed bags of a white p o w d e r s u b -stance weigh-ing 24.26 grams, which field test-ed positive for heroin.

The marijuana recovered from the vehicle weighed .84 grams, police said. Officers also recovered 10 individually wrapped pills of Xanax.

All the narcotics were indi-

vidually packed for distribu-tion, police said.

Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said the drugs were so well hidden that once the canine hit on the compartment in the ve-hicle, a female officer had to remove her bullet-proof vest to be able to squeeze through the compartment and recover the narcotics that were hid-den in a pass-way between the back seat of the car and the trunk.

According to police, Turn-er was on parole for an armed

robbery in Chicago and had a no bond Illinois Department of Correction warrant issued for his arrest.

Turner was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the recovered heroin and Xanax, possession of a controlled sub-stance with intent to deliver and possession of marijuana. He also was cited for speed-ing.

Turner was charged with Class X felony because of the weight of the heroin that was in his possession, police said.

NEWS BRIEFMan robs 10 at gunpoint at party in Brookfield

BROOKFIELD – According to police, 10 people were robbed at gunpoint at 11:21 p.m. July 18 by a lone offender in the 3500 block of McCormick Avenue in Brookfield.

Police said the offender, described as a male, black, about 5-foot-10, of slim build and wear-ing a mask, held up a group of 10

people a party in Brookfield.The gunman brought one of

the partygoers to the backyard at gunpoint, ordered 10 people to the ground and told them to empty their pockets. The man then ordered them to place their hands on a nearby fence while he patted them down and collected their belongings.

According to Lt. Ed Petrak of the

Brookfield Police Department, the case is still under investigation.

“Leads are being followed,” Petrak said. “Hopefully we’ll get to make an arrest on this soon.”

The man was last seen getting into a vehicle, possibly with another person, and speeding away northbound from the 3500 block of McCormick Avenue.

With nearly 300,000 print and digital checkouts, 30,000 logged uses of laptops and computers, and 15,000 participants in classes and events last year, Brookfield shows its library a great deal of love. And your library loves you back. Efforts to provide new materials and to enhance classes and events for the benefit of the hard-working taxpayers of Brookfield are never-ending.

Perhaps your child is enrolled in the library’s after school program from 3 to 6 p.m., allowing you to finish a day’s work knowing your child is safe and in a learning environment. Or maybe your family has taken advantage of the Library’s STEM pipeline via classes such as the 3-D printing club or Geek Lab. Whichever event or class you may be benefiting from at the library, you likely know that the building’s largest meeting space can fit just 31 residents. There is high demand for these programs and many others that we are proud to offer to the Brookfield community. But at the present time, we are forced to turn away residents hoping to register for these classes. In fact, last year we were forced to deny services to 756 taxpayers – all because we don’t have enough room.

To us, failing to serve the people of Brookfield is unaccept-able. This is the reason we’re pursuing the construction of a brand new library – a building that can not only accommodate Brookfield as it is now, but as it will be in the future, when a new generation of Brookfielders begins attending early litera-cy classes, participating in study sessions for final exams, and eventually, renewing the cycle with their own children.

The Board of Trustees understands that cost is a concern, but progress is impossible without expense. We know that a new library will enhance property values for taxpayers and make Brookfield an even more desirable place to live. We know that the citizens of our community deserve the very best, and we promise that the tax dollars entrusted to the library – now and in the future – will be used frugally, sensibly, and for the benefit of the entire community.

The library will be working with the village of Brookfield on its final plans for the new facility, and to that end I must thank the resident members of the Facility Advisory Committee who have put in countless hours of their service and provided input on the architectural plans to date. The library’s next step will be to reach out to residents for even more suggestions and feedback as the interior layout is deliberated. The time is now. Supporting the library is supporting Brookfield.

Let animals stay in wildI was saddened by the recent news of

the loss of the 54 stringrays at Brook-field Zoo. I wonder, when are the people going to demand that the zoo discon-tinue keeping animals such as dolphins and stingrays held captive solely for the extra money that they bring into

the zoo? To use the excuse that these animals provide educational benefits to children and adults that are allowed to pet and feed them is ludicrous, just like SeaWorld and other such attractions. Let’s be honest, this is to make money off of these beautiful wild animals.

District makes no senseI live in La Grange, and my taxes for

community college go to College of DuPage. Can someone explain to me why when I live in La Grange, and there’s a community college closer to me, the Mo-raine Valley Community College, yet my taxes and my residency has me as being in the DuPage community college region? This doesn’t make any sense.

Rauner aids wealthyIt certainly is disturbingly easy for people

living comfortably in DuPage County, the second wealthiest county in the state of Illinois, to be applauding [Bruce] Rauner’s austerity plan when they’re not the people being beaten over the head with it. The working poor and elderly in the rest of the state are being denied subsidies to help them heat their homes, along with the loss of other social supports, while corpora-tions that are recording record profits get increased economic tax incentives.

Needing recycling binsOn the Lisle Eyes to the Skies Festival. It

was a great Eyes to the Skies this year. It was distressing, however, not to find one recycle bin.

Poorly patched potholesI recently was on [Interstate] 355 from

55th Street to Archer [Avenue] and back to 55th. It was delightfully smooth, with zero bumps and zero potholes. Then I drove down Downers [Grove’s] Main Street, from 55th Street to 75th Street. What a difference. The bumps and poorly patched potholes nearly broke my teeth. I am a 25-year resident of Downers Grove. The street surface repairing has always been third rate.

there are 17,000 Illinois educators that make more than $100,000. … [In 2012,] Glenbard District 87 teachers made an average salary (not starting) of $95,058. … Those of us in the real world work around 230 days a year … compared to a teacher’s 180 days of contract nego-tiated work. By 2017, 10,000 retired educators will have $100,000-plus life-time pensions. To support these salaries, property taxes keep increasing and will, in some cases, total more than yearly mortgage payments.

Daniel C. Pancake, Sr., age 76, ofLaGrange. Beloved husband ofRaeDell M. (nee Marks); lovingfather to his 5 sons, Charles (Mary)Tapia, Dan Jr. (Beth) Pancake, Adam(Amy) Pancake, Kenneth (Alicia)Tapia and Peter (Adriana )Tapia;cherished grandfather of 9; alsosurvived by 5 brothers and 1 sister;uncle of many.

Daniel was an accomplishedbusinessman, mentor, and a truebeliever in the power of communityservice. Dan was dedicated to thesuccess of small business, thecharitable reach of the Rotary Club,YMCA and Plymouth Place withinthe LaGrange and Western Springscommunities, and the success ofinstitutions like the West SuburbanChamber of Commerce. Dan spentalmost 50 years in the IndependentInsurance Industry, as a smallbusiness owner and partner for amajority of that time. Dan hasserved the ProfessionalIndependent Insurance Agents ofIllinois (PIIAI) under many titlesincluding Vice President of the Year,Government Relations CommitteeChair, Partners Program Vice Chair,PIIAIPAC Banks in InsuranceCommittee, and Vice President ofRegion 18.

Daniel has also done extensivework on the local level. One of thehighlights of her life was having theopportunity to live in a differentculture while teaching chemistry toArab students at BethlehemUniversity in Israel. She will bedearly missed.

Violet Elizabeth Nielsen (Nelson)was born on July 26, 1915, inChicago, Illinois. Her life wasblessed and she in turn blessedother's. She was happiest servingGod and others. Her faith was herstrength and guided her each day.She was a graduate of Calumet HighSchool, and moved with her youngfamily to LaGrange in 1952. Shelived there and in Western Springsuntil 2006.

She was an active member of theWestern Springs Baptist Churchserving as a Deaconate and singingin the choir. She also served on theMidwest Christian Women's ClubBoard as their President. Vi lovedentertaining in her home here andat her summer home on LakeMichigan. She moved to Cincinnatiin 2006 to be near family. After anine-year battle with cancer, shebreathed her last breath March 15,2015.

She was preceded in death by herparents, Erik and Gerda Nelson;siblings, Elmer, Gideon, Jay,Florence, and Norman Nelson, andElinor Broberg; husbands, Warren R.Brinkman and Jens Nielsen; son-in-law, William Treul; andgranddaughter, Holly Faith Perry.

She is survived by sisters, RuthErickson, June Bere and ClaireHamlin; her children, Dr. Larry K.Brinkman (JoAnne) of Ocala FL, Dr.Richard W. Brinkman (Priscilla) ofGeneva, IL, and Barbara BrinkmanPerry (Robert) of Loveland, OH; andstep daughter, Sharon J. Treul ofPewaukee, WI. RIVER FOREST – Next year, Nazareth baseball will play in Class 4A for the post-season, but the Roadrunners didn’t have to wait that long to get an early taste of what that competition will be like.

During the Phil Lawler Classic summer postseason tournament, the Roadrunners took on three Class 4A teams before falling in the final of the Fenwick regional.

Nazareth beat 4A schools Addison Trail and Glenbard East, along with 3A school St. Joseph, before losing against 4A spring semifinalist Oak Park-River Forest in the Fen-wick regional final July 16.

The Huskies topped Naza-reth 7-1 a year after the Road-runners made it all the way to the final of the summer tour-nament.

“I give the guys credit that were here that we competed,” Nazareth coach Lee Milano said. “You throw basically four guys who have combined varsity experience of probably two innings and you’re playing against one of the top programs in the state [OPRF]. Our guys battled. They weren’t intimi-dated. They took their cuts.”

The loss ended Nazareth’s summer. Despite being short-handed because of travel ball and other sports competing for the players’ time, the Roadrun-ners still made a run.

“It’s always good to get some momentum toward the spring,” senior Kyle Kane said. “It was really tough going from highs then to lows and then going into the summer and starting all over again. We had a lot of positives out of the summer and we’ll work toward next year.”

Milano is confident about next spring’s team. The Road-runners were runners-up in Class 3A this spring and are ex-pected to return seven starters from that team. Even with the move to 4A, Nazareth should remain among the favorites to get to state.

“We play a tough schedule during the year, so whoever we face in the playoffs we will not be intimidated to play,” Milano said. “We have seven starters coming back and five of them were missing [against OPRF] so we have a good team coming back. I have high ex-pectations for that team.”

Nazareth’s summer also in-cluded play in the Suburban Chicago Connie Mack Baseball League, which the Roadrunners have been a part of since 2012.

Milano said the team got off to a slow summer start, possibly because of an understandable lull after losing in the Class 3A final to end the spring, but the Roadrunners ended on a good run by making the final 16 of the Lawler Classic.

Senior Chris Campagna, who pitched six scoreless in-nings in the 8-3 regional semi-final win against Glenbard East on July 15, said the sum-mer is about improving more than winning.

“It’s more laid-back really,” Campagna said. “There’s not as much pressure to get go-ing. You can work on stuff. It’s learning time.”

LISLE – The United States returned to the pinnacle of women’s soccer by winning the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Vancouver earlier in July.

It was a record third world title for the U.S. and first since 1999, and the response from the general public is an indica-tion of how much the sport has grown in popularity and talent over the past 16 years.

Four members of the Chica-go Red Stars – forward Chris-ten Press, midfielders Lori Chalupny and Shannon Boxx, and defender Julie Johnston – were on the U.S. team and all were amazed at the support.

“Being my first World Cup it was absolutely unbelievable, and to win it, definitely I don’t think you can top that,” John-ston said. “I didn’t know what to expect in the sense of the fans.

“In every single game it was absolutely remarkable to see how many U.S. fans were there, and when we came back to the States it was even greater.”

The team was feted with a ticker-tape parade down the “Canyon of Heroes” in New York and won Team of the Year honors at ESPN’S ESPY awards.

The fanfare stunned even the veteran Boxx, 38, who will retire at the end of the year.

“I think the ticker-tape pa-rade was pretty amazing,” Boxx said. “Not everybody is given the honor to do that. I’ve been around a long time and I think that’s one of the coolest events that I’ve ever been part of.”

Boxx was a member of four World Cup teams and has seen the popularity rise over the years.

“It has gotten so much bet-ter,” Boxx said. “You go back to 1991 [the first World Cup which the U.S. won in China]. Nobody was waiting for them at the airport. Then in 2011 we didn’t win but we got an amaz-ing reception when we came back to the U.S. I think that’s when it started.”

But will it continue?Boxx, Chalupny, Johnston

and Press returned to Chicago on July 18 and a crowd of 3,560 – the first sellout in franchise

history – saw the Red Stars tie Boston 1-1 at Benedictine University to remain in sole possession of first place in the NWSL.

“I think the challenge is to keep it going,” said Chalupny, 31, the captain who scored Chi-cago’s only goal against Bos-ton. “World Cups only happen every four years and winning it definitely gave us a little bump in viewership and the amount of attention that has been giv-en to the sport, but the great

thing is we have this league and we play every year and it’s in people’s hometowns. People can watch us play and that will continue the momentum.”

Such bumps have happened before. The U.S. victory in the 1999 World Cup led to the es-tablishment of the first domes-tic professional league.

But three such leagues all folded after three seasons and the NWSL is now in its third season. Will this time be dif-ferent?

“We’ve got to keep win-ning,” Red Stars owner Arnim Whisler said. “In a town like this with nine or 10 other pro sports teams, if we don’t win, we’re off the radar.

“We’ve got the brand, we’ve got the talent and we’ve got people coming in the stadi-um who have never seen us before. We just have to thrill them when they come and they’ll usually come back.

“That’s on us. That’s on ... marketing through the people

who have been in the stadium, better relations with the press in Chicago. We can convert that.”

The Red Stars have plen-ty of marketable young stars in the 26-year-old Press and 2014 NWSL Rookie of the Year Johnston, 23, plus Un-der-23 National Team mem-bers Vanessa DiBernardo and Danielle Colaprico and 22-year-old leading scorer So-fia Huerta.

“I think that it is an incred-ibly important moment for women’s soccer,” Press said. “The important thing is for the fans who have been so great for us and for the national team to continue to support us and come out to the NWSL games and see that there’s hundreds of women in this country that play great soccer.

“It is something worth watching and I think if the fans continue to support us in our leagues, that is going to push women’s soccer in America forward at every level.”

There is no doubt the Red Stars have high expectations. Chicago head coach Rory Dames called the atmosphere of the July 18 game “fantastic” but said the team didn’t play up to its caliber.

“Regardless of why people are here, I would like us to play the way we’re capable of play-ing,” Dames said. “I think we have a lot of exciting players on the team outside of the na-tional team players. Hopefully we can get some more fans in because they want to see some players and buy into the team and really start to enjoy what they see.”

RIVERSIDE – Brothers Jacob Ka-minski and Gabriel Kaminski will have to clear some space in the trophy case.

Both have picked up plenty of hard-ware in 2015.

Jacob, a 13-year-old who attends Hausen Junior High in Riverside, and Gabriel, a 9-year-old heading into fourth grade at Central Elementary in Riverside, both have racked up several successful finishes this year.

Jacob captured titles at the Illinois

Kids Wrestling Federa-tion folkstyle state tour-nament in March, at the Illinois Greco-Roman state championships in April and at the Illinois freestyle state champi-onships in early May.

Those wins were in addition to his title at the 2015 Flo Tulsa Nationals in January.

In June, Jacob won Northern Plains regional titles in freestyle and Gre-co-Roman, and he was the winner at

the 2015 ASICS/USA Wrestling Freestyle Na-tionals in early July.

All that national suc-cess on the mat earned Jacob an invitation by USA Wrestling to the 2020 Cadet and Junior Olympic Training Camp at the University of Wis-

consin in Madison.Gabriel won a Bantam state title in

February and wrestled up at the Inter-mediate level at the 15th Annual Midg-

et Championships in March, where he also won a title. He won Northern Plains regional titles in both Greco-Ro-man and freestyle and was the champ at the 2015 ASICS/USA Wrestling Gre-co-Roman Nationals. He was second in folkstyle at the Flo Tulsa nationals.

Gabriel represented Illinois at the AAU National Elementary Duals in Kingsport, Tenn., where he helped the team take first place.

Both brothers have attended camps run by Riverside Brookfield High School coach Mike Boyd.

LISLE – A whirlwind for four members of the U.S. Soccer Women’s National Team continued July 18.

The U.S. won the Women’s World Cup on July 5 and the team was cel-ebrated as heroes upon its return to home soil. The quartet of Shannon

Boxx, Lori Chalupny, Julie Johnston and Christen Press got a big welcome home July 18 when they suited up for the Chicago Red Stars for their first home match since the World Cup.

In front of a sellout crowd at Bene-dictine University, Boxx, Chalupny, Johnston and Press received the roy-al treatment from the Red Stars and the fans who cheered on the World Cup players in a National Women’s Soccer League game against the Bos-ton Breakers.

Boxx and Chalupny each played in one World Cup game, Press played in four games and tallied a goal against Australia, and Johnston started all seven games and notched an assist.
