INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME (10-week Attachment)
DKHMCC manages all internship placements for students at SMU. All BSc (IS) students must
complete an attachment in the area of Information Systems (aligned to their IS track) or Smart-
City Management & Technology for a minimum of 10-weeks (continuous and full-time) as part
of their graduation requirements. Note that there is NO exemption from Internship for SIS
students. Please refer to SIS Internship FAQ and DKHMCC FAQ on Internship for more
information.
LinkedIn Profile
At SIS, all students are encouraged to have their own LinkedIn profile to showcase their
acquired skills and competencies. See the SIS Internship FAQ #7 and #8 for more
information.
DKHMCC Internship Guidelines
Full-time matriculated students can start their internship after successfully completing two
terms and having attended an e-Internship Briefing / e-Quiz. Please refer to OASIS > Careers
& Comm Service > Internship > e-Internship Briefing for more details.
Failure to attempt the e-Internship Briefing and/or failing the e-Quiz will not allow you
to view or apply for any internship via OnTRAC II. Only internships submitted via
OnTRAC II and approved by DKHMCC will be recognised towards your 10-week
graduation requirement.
A successful internship requires preparation and advance planning. Below are some points to
note:
Students may source for their own internship, or browse through the internship
opportunities on OnTRAC II.
For self-sourced internships, students must submit a self-proposal via OnTRAC II for
DKHMCC’s approval before embarking on the stint. The same guidelines and process
will apply to students with internship obligations as part of their scholarship.
Overseas Internships require valid visa and travel insurance before DKHMCC’s approval
is granted.
The approved internship must be carried out on a full-time basis for a total of at least 10
weeks completing 400 hours.
Accountancy, Information Systems and Law students have specific requirements for internship.
Double Degree students are to ensure that they satisfy the criteria for both primary and
secondary degree programmes as part of the fulfilment of their graduation requirements.
Internship Periods
Students are recommended to intern during Summer vacation break or during term-time*. *During term-time (after Year 2), students embarking on full-time internships will have to apply for
Leave of Absence (LOA) in advance. Foreign students holding Student Pass should refer to Ministry
of Manpower’s rules on local internship (for international students only) in OASIS > Careers &
Comm Service > Internship > Internship for International Students for additional information.
Please read the LOA policy at OASIS > Finance & Admin > Absence & Withdrawal > Leave of
Absence (LOA). Students need to initiate the application for LOA as this process is not automatic.
On completion of a 10-week internship as part of their graduation requirement, students may
embark on part-time internships subjected to approval by DKHMCC.

Internship Grading
Internships will be graded an overall ‘Pass’ and considered complete when submitted
documents are assessed to be satisfactory and meet the objectives of the internship programme.
Please visit ontrac.smu.edu.sg or OASIS > Careers & Comm Service > Internship > Post-
Internship Checklist for more information.
Internship Report Students must submit an internship report within one month of completing their internship
stint. Graduating students are to note the filing deadlines for graduation, factoring in a two-
week lead time for DKHMCC to review the internship report.
Your internship report should provide the following details:
- Your job scope, responsibilities and key assignments;
- Your accomplishments, e.g. projects you did, applications or systems you built; and
- Lessons learnt (both hard and soft skills) and other takeaways.
To complete the internship report, students can access the report at OASIS > Participation
and Grading
Internship Performance Appraisal Form The assigned supervisor / reporting officer will be sent an online internship performance
appraisal form by DKHMCC to evaluate the intern’s performance during the attachment.
Any internship with an overall grading of “Below Average” will not be recognised towards
the fulfilment of the 10-week graduation requirement.
Please refer to DKHMCC FAQs on Internship and SIS Internship FAQ for more
information.

COMMUNITY SERVICE (Centre for Social Responsibility)
Students are required to be actively involved, to serve and give back to society with a minimum
of 80 hours. This is to inculcate in students the value of being responsible and civic-minded
citizens of society. Thus, they are encouraged to start their community service attachment early,
preferably in the first year of their study.
Before you begin your Community Service (CS) attachment, you must complete the CS e-
Briefing through the eLearn portal at https://elearn.smu.edu.sg/. The CS Briefing is a critical
first step as it helps you in understanding the SMU graduation requirement for community
service and guidelines and procedures for students’ efforts to be recognised towards the
graduation requirement.
Students may work with a maximum of three Organizations to fulfil the first 80 hours. At the
end of the attachment, the Host Organizations are required to appraise the students’
performance.
After completing the first 80-hour requirement, students must submit a written report through
SMU Oasis. Students' Community Service will be graded and considered complete only when
submitted documents are assessed to be satisfactory and meeting the objectives of the
community service programme, in which case the Community Service will be given an overall
"pass" grade.
For more information, please refer to OASIS > Careers & Comm Service > Community
Service
ACCESSIBILITY AND ACCOMMODATIONS
SMU strives to make learning experiences accessible for all. If you anticipate or experience
physical or academic barriers due to disability, please inform SIS Dean’s Office immediately.
You are also welcome to contact the SMU Diversity & Inclusion team if you have questions
or concerns about academic provisions: [email protected].
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY All acts of academic dishonesty (including, but not limited to, plagiarism, cheating,
fabrication, facilitation of acts of academic dishonesty by others, unauthorized possession of
exam questions, or tampering with the academic work of other students) are serious offences.
All work (whether oral or written) submitted for purposes of assessment must be the student’s
own work. Penalties for violation of the policy range from zero marks for the component assessment to expulsion, depending on the nature of the offense.
When in doubt, students should consult the instructors of the course. Details on the SMU Code
of Academic Integrity may be accessed at http://www.smuscd.org/resources.html.
