The Property Management and Valuation (PMV) degree aims to prepare graduates for a career as Chartered General Practice Surveyors.

These are the professionals involved in the valuation, management and development of urban property across the commercial, industrial and residential sectors. They may also be involved in structuring the deals for sales and acquisitions of single properties or large portfolios of properties. The programme equips graduates with a thorough grounding in the essential subjects required to carry out these varied roles.

Graduate opportunitiesCareer opportunities exist in both private and public sectors including: Property and Surveying Consultancies, Property Development Companies, Local Authorities, Housing Associations, Local Enterprise Companies, Health Trusts, Government Agencies and In-house Commercial Property.Students undertake a year-long professional placement either in the UK or abroad, which counts towards the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).

Study TourStudy tours and case study work are integral to the Property Management and Valuation degree. Opportunities are provided for students to gain

experience of working practices in other parts of the UK and abroad. Most recently, study tours of North America have focussed on distinctions in their real estate markets and challenges for regeneration. Students are able to partake in academic exchanges through the established link with Ryerson University, Toronto.

Students can participate with those on other programmes in the School on a European study tour to one of our partner institutions and thereafter undertake an exchange studyperiod through the ERASMUS programme. Recent locations have included Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Lahti (Finland) and Hnekra (Spain).

Work ExperienceSupervised work experience is an integral part of the programme. Each student on the full-time programme is assisted to obtain 12 months employment within a suitable organisation in Year 3. Students are normally paid a wage by the employing company. The placement gives students the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience. Many are offered jobs with their placement organisations after graduating and can count the placement towards final

professional qualification as a Chartered Surveyor under the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence.

Links with IndustryThe programme has been developed to ensure that teaching modules reflect and develop current best practice and cater for the needs of employers. As a result, graduates are well equipped to gain fulfilling and well paid employment on completion of the programme.

“ This course is now the market leader in Scotland for the surveying profession. All of our most recent employees in Glasgow have been graduates of this course who are both technically and academically prepared for the working environment. The course is unique in so far as it also prepares the students for the Assessment of Professional Competence governed by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.”

Brian Ronnie, Head of Professional Services, Ryden LLP

Assessment methodsA variety of assessment methods, including coursework activities and formal examinations, are included within the modules.

Our approach to teaching involves mixing traditional methods whilst employing modern technology, which in practice means our students can access materials through blackboards, weblinks, wikis and voice recordings.

For some parts of the course, lectures are recorded and uploaded onto GCULearn, allowing our students to access the material when it suits them through a variety of media, such as a smart phone.

Our students are partly assessed through undergoing real life practical experience often involving live projects allowing them to put into practice the theory they have learned.

In part these assessments are organised to mirror how the professional body which accredits our course, the Royal Institution of Practical Surveyors would assess for professional competence.

Student supportStudy support is available to all students throughout the BSc programme from personal tutors, module leaders and the programme leader. For international students a designated advisor can also provide structured mentoring and study support sessions which cover numerous topics such as academic writing skills, personal goal setting and pastoral care.
