FOREWORD

I write this from an unusual perspective, it will be my last foreword for a degree exposition brochure as my retirement is now imminent. Whilst inscribing this in reflective and somewhat melancholy temperament; I am not sure at which end of which of Frost’s ‘roads’ I stand; however, I am sure that I share Lawrence’s disposition, as I look from the same window to a world I do not wish to join either, but have too. The same ‘daisy froth’ lies quiescent on the lawn adjacent Shakespeare Street, the entrance hall to the Arkwright building, as it is now known still has its big stone chimney-piece and its Gothic arches still support the balcony above, the students of 2016-2017 are however, very different, different from that time and different from mine.

It is indeed their time and they present for you their designs both contemporaneous and futuristic. Their work in a truly holistic sense reflects the courses’ philosophy; that of responsible design and the character and quality of their products, within the degree show, highlights their pleasure from working materials and designing systems and products from both a modern and innovative aspect; it is reflected in the knowledge that their realised designs will be mutually beneficial, to themselves and to the community at large.

When viewing or reading their work I annex that same pleasure and satisfaction, I understand how precious their work is to them and the wider community and I find pride both personal and shared in the combination of worked materials, visualised, designed and realised in such exclusive products.

I have the greatest empathy with their written dissertations, many on subject matter they care about greatly and which demonstrates their responsibility, sympathy, and maturity as designers, designers of whom I am justifiably proud. The whole of their work including the dissertation gives me as it gives others great satisfaction and delight in that it is produced by them; my students.

Finally, I would wish them all the greatest success in their careers, they clearly stand at the start of the road, and may it be smooth and straight.

BSc Class of 2017 - Having followed this cohort through the entirety of their studies it is with a mixture of sadness and excitement that I see them complete their studies and graduate to commence roles for which they have been preparing for the past four years.

The life of a BSc Product Design student is challenging, balancing an intensive programme of study, which requires them to use the full breadth of their skills, through live and competition projects that encompass design for disability, sustainability, manufacture and the developing world, whilst obtaining and utilising new skills and knowledge in CAD, materials and manufacture, mechatronics and programming.Alongside all this work these students were also required to apply for placements for their sandwich year, undertaking placements in a range of industries across the UK, Netherlands and as far afield as San Francisco, or undertaking a European projectsemester, studying at Universities in the Netherlands and Spain.

As the students come towards graduation it is heartening to look back at their first yearphotos and see how much they have all grown both as designers and individuals, in particular

this degree show brochure demonstrates their talents but also their passions through two individually driven final year projects, which demonstrate their interests and character. Their Major Study Projects in particular address a variety of issues, such as health and safety at work, educational toys, design for disability, medical products, novel uses of materials, sustainability and design for the developing world.

Throughout their studies at NTU, this cohort of students have developed areas of personal strength as well as their own individual passions and through all this will have developed a greater awareness of themselves and the ability that they have to make a significant contribution to society through design. Therefore, I encourage them to continue to inquire and apply their innovative thinking and technological understanding to real world problems. “The important thing is not to stop questioning. The tumbling track is a sprung platform used by gymnasts for performing tumbling skills. The platform is created by a series of 6063-T6 aluminium extruded frames aligned linearly,covered with a foam mat. Each frame has 16 parallel fibreglass rods, that provide the springiness.

The product is a device used to stabilise intertrochanteric and sub-trochanteric proximal femur fractures.the device consists of two internally threaded brackets and a corresponding threaded cortical screw. The product is to be used in conjunction with a traditional dynamic hip screw and side plate.

Straight Up is a smart compression top designed to improve posture. It measures the curve of the user’s back through two sensors located in pockets on the mid-thoracic and mid-lumbar sections of the back. When the user is in a poor posture position, the sensors will vibrate to inform the user to adjust their position.

A large problem in todays homes is that of storage solutions, with homes getting smaller and more and more people commuting and using bikes, I found there to be a gap in the market for in home storage solutions. The final product utilised the aluminium extrusion process and could be folded away when not in use.

As a keen sailor I wanted to focus my main project into the marine industry. With every journeyundertaken when sailing, safety is always at the centre of the planning and preparation. This new design of safety tether allows sailors to regain entry to their vessel unassisted with the use of foot and handholds.

The brief for this project was to produce a product using extruded aluminium. The Slice and Swipe was designed to aid and improve the kitchen experience for the user. It can be attached to a variety of worktop thicknesses, allowing food waste and cuttings to be simply pushed in.

Current washing machines use concrete counterweights which weigh a third of the total weight of a washing machine (up to 25kg). This project looked at reducing the total weight of the washing machine, thus saving costs during transportation and movement around the home.

Cyclone is an LED fly killer which incorporates sensor and vacuum technology, to improve the hygiene issues of the current catch methods. Whilst also at the same time being more energy efficient by switchingto UV LED’s and by using sensors to detect flies, meaning the motor is only on when needed.

The Adjustable Material Processor allows for material such as stone or clay to be processed at different rates or inducing different force, allowing the separation of material to be fine-tuned. A geared adjustment mechanism allows the two concentric and eccentric shafts to be re-aligned to achieve this change in force.

The Sill Saver is design focused on protecting future classic car sills whilst still allow-ing for basic maintenance to be performed at home. The two inner sections allow for ad-justment in length and the inner section provides a mock sill for stands t be placed under.

The project was to design a product that uses aluminium extrusion. The product designed was a Contemporary Desk Light on a track system giving the user a flexible lighting source for their desk. The product is chargeable via USB meaning there is no trailing wires.

The Suitcase Handle Attachment device is attached to the suitcase handle to give the user a more natural hand positioning when pulling a suitcase. This more natural hand positioning can help to reduce the shoulder and back injuries which can be associated with pulling suitcases.

Regularly cleaning solar panels can increase their efficiency by up 50%. This solar panel frame allows a solar panel to be lowered from a roof to a reachable level.
