    Undergraduate Thesis Writing Guidelines for

    Engineering Faculty

The thesis should have a cover page, title page, declaration page at the beginning andReferences (containing list of references: books, journal / periodical papers, URL sites). A pagecontaining Acknowledgement shall be put next. Contents, Abstract (in one page not exceeding preferablywithin 600 words) shall be put next. Chapter 1, 2, 3 shall start next. In general, the thesis shall bewritten using small and simple as well as easy to understand sentences. Beginning a sentence by thewords but and and should be avoided. Passive voice should be used as far as possible.

In the abstract, students should briefly present sequentially what has been done or developed ordiscovered or investigated in their work. In addition they should present what has been observed, what arethe results of their investigation or experiment, how close are the results compared to the predictedvalues, what were the targets and what has been achieved. The Abstract is significantly important as areader will try to get an idea about the work by reading it. In the abstract the novelty of the work or thecontribution of the authors should be highlighted. The objective of the work shall not be presented in the

abstract. No introduction should be presented in the abstract.

The Introduction chapter must contain at least the following sections: (i) Introduction, (ii)Historical background / Background, (iii) related other works, (iv) Objectives of this work, (v)

Introduction to this thesis. Necessary diagrams/ figures should be given in support of the text. Thischapter should be of significant length.

At least one chapter should be present in the thesis in which the authors will present their ownwork in details. Sufficient figures should be present in this chapter. If possible more chapters may be

presented for this purpose. These chapters should contain statements from the authors only, not copy froma book or books.

The last chapter is Discussions and Conclusions. This chapter must contain at least thefollowing sections: (i) Discussions, (ii) Suggestions for future work, (iii) Conclusions. A discussion onthe entire work together with the problems encountered during the work must be presented in thediscussion section. What the target was, what problems were faced during the work, what were thesolutions to the problems, what were the reasons of failure or success, what can be the possibleapplications, what is the contribution of the authors etc. should be presented in this section. If possiblenecessary diagrams/ figures should be given in support of the text. This chapter titled Discussions andConclusions should be at least five pages in length but should be preferably more.

Page number shall start from the first page of the Introduction Chapter. Pages from the declarationto the Abstract (including the contents) shall be numbered in small roman numbers.

The complete title of the design project/thesis reportmust be written using the same font size(20) type and style.

For writing text, headings and sub headings Times New Roman font type should be used.Chapters (i.e., Chapter 1, Chapter 2) should be in font size 14, Headings (i.e., chapters

name) should be in font size 16, sub-headings (1.1 Introduction, 1.2 Historical Background..) in

font size 14 and text should be in font size 12 . Some examples are attached herewith for the ease ofunderstanding.

In the writing, special emphasis must be given on students own contribution in the work. Thetheoretical work/ Laboratory work done by the student must be elaborately presented.

The authors must write the thesis in such a way so that one can not complain about readability andcontinuity of the writing. These two factors are significantly important. Sufficient figures should be

presented so that a reader can get significant idea about the work by looking at the figures and by readingthe figure caption. The figure captions should contain significant information for a reader who is not anexpert in this particular field. Figures should be drawn by the project students themselves usingappropriate software or hand and not downloaded or scanned from other sources. Figures with figurenumbers should be quoted in the text. Students must understand that figures are presented to support thetext and make the text more attractive. References must be quoted in the text in appropriate manner.

Figures must contain Figure numbers and appropriate figure caption at the bottom of each

figure. Figure number for chapter 1 must be given as Figure 1.1, Figure 1.2 , for chapter 5 Figure

5.1, Figure 5.2 etc. Figures must be given as a support to the text. Text and figures must be

related i.e., Figure numbers must be quoted in the text.

Figure Caption must be provided at the bottom of each figure. Figure caption should containsufficient information about the item displayed/ graph presented in the figure. Electronic Scanning of

figures from any book or thesis and presenting the same as a figure is not allowed.

A chapter must have chapter number and a meaningful chapter heading. The chapter title/ headingshould be placed in the center of the line. Separate paper should not be wasted only for giving chapternumber rather chapter number and chapter title/ heading must be given at the top of the beginning page ofthe chapter. All sections must have appropriate headings and section numbers. Each chapter shall startwith an Introduction section and should end with a summary section.

References must be put at the end of the thesis and it should be prepared following the stylepresented at the end of this document (IEEE style). If it is a book or a journal paper appropriate pagenumbers must be mentioned and the reference number should be quoted in the text of the chapter (s) assay [3].

If there is an Appendix then appropriate title should be given to it. If there are more than one

Appendix appropriate title should be given to each of the Appendices.Electronic scanning of text from any document/ book/ thesis and including it in the thesis is

usually not allowed. Downloaded pictures / figures should not be used unless there is sufficient reason todo so.

For writing acknowledgement the students should take guidance from their respective supervisors.Source codes, if any, should be presented in Appendices only, not in the chapters. References of

the Appendices should be made in the text of the chapters i.e., text in the related chapters and Appendicesshould be appropriately linked. The volume should be minimized as far as possible.

The minimum number of pages of the thesis is 60 and the maximum is 125.

The text should typed using black colour only. Multi-colour printing should not be used.

Page Setup (tentative): top 1.5 cm, bottom 1.5 cm, right 1.5 cm and left 2 cm
