It’s a good thing not everyone driveslike me, otherwise there might not be aneed for the collision industry. I use myindicator. Always. I would put it on evenif I was on an endless, desolate deserthighway with my only company beingthe buzzards circling overhead. Ialways...ALWAYS...wear my seatbelt. Ieven wear it if I’m simply getting back inthe car to move it across a parking lot. Igo the speed limit or a little higher. If thespeed limit is 65, I go 65 to 70. Period. And I never...NEVER...tailgate. Tailgatingscares the tar out of me. I always make
sure there’s at least four carlengths between me
and the person I’mbehind.
With all this talkof collision avoid-ance systems andcomputer-driven
cars in thefuture, it
occurred to me the other day that, at leastin the present day, the collision industryis in good hands. Every day, when Imake my perilous 66-mile roundtripdrive to work, I sit back and watch potential disasters unfold before me.
My main route, Interstate 77, is twolanes for a good way, and that’s a recipefor disaster. Slow people who get in thefast line get the fast people mad, who endup tailgating or wrecklessly swervingaround them. Note to fast people: I seeyou in my rearview mirror barrelingtoward me at 90 miles per hour. I will getover...if you let me. But you don’t. Youassume I’m a daydreamer and will stayput. So I put my turn signal on to moveto the right, and then we almost collidebecause you moved over too.
The most common offense I see? Tail-gating. The second? Speeding. The thirdis probably failure to use a turn signal.Ever see the two-lane crossover? Some-one swerving across two lanes with noindicator? Gotta love that, especiallywhen they do it right in front of youbecause they forgot about their exit.
How about do what I do and take yourmedicine and get off at the next exit?
Yeah, there are fewer collisionsthese days. But there are plentyof numbskulls on the road who will continue to bring you work.

Idon’t know if you knew this, but I’m the safest driver in the world. I know, every-one thinks they’re the best driver. But not everyone can be right, right? Some peo-ple’s version of “good” might be going 80 miles per hour to keep the flow goingand not be one of the stones (those who drive under the speed limit) who every-
one else flows around. But 80 is reckless if you ask me.

Which One of These Scares You More?
The other image below the Google car on thesurface would appear to be rather harmless – just asimple little device that plugs into the OBD II portand either records data or transmits it to a centrallocation that records and accumulates it from other
vehicles motoring around our road-ways. Not very scary at all, right?
Wrong! This little device will beat the center of one of the largestcontroversies the automotive mar-ket has ever experienced. Here’sthe really scary part: The debateover this device and many of ourown futures will be decided inWashington with us having little or
no control over it. That, to me, is veryunsettling. Let me explain.
Telematics devicesare currently show-
ing up in vehiclesand are beingused by insur-ance companiesto offer dis-counts to safedrivers.Seems prettysafe. Butwhat aboutall the otherdata thatcould be ac-cessed by adevice like
this? This data could be used forrepair purposes and actually bea great tool to service customersand help us repair damaged ve-hicles. In the future, this datawill have tremendous value, and many will want/need to gettheir hands on it.
That’s where the rub comes. Itseems that many people todaybelieve they own that data. In-surers say they own it, automakers believe theyown it and the aftermarket believes that it shouldhave access to it.
Actually, it’s recording information owned bydrivers just like you and me. I say it belongs to thevehicle owner. Of course, everyone should havethe ability to access that data, but only after the ve-hicle owner decides where he or she wants it to go.
“Right to Repair” is an important issue to the aftermarket. Many have fought a long and arduousbattle to ensure that all can access the necessary in-formation to repair vehicles – and the battle is notover yet. Consumer rights to telematics data willnot be any easier. As members of the automotiverepair industry, the collision repair segment needsto be sure we’re being heard on this issue.
Stand up and be heard on this issue. Our futuredepends on it. BSB

The image on the right is probably familiar to all of us. It’s the Google car. Aston-ishingly, it has logged more than 500,000 miles without an incident. Did I men-tion it has no driver? I know that most of you are familiar with this project. Some of you find it scary. Some even think it will be the end of our industry. I,
on the other hand, am not buying into the frenzy. I look at the Google car as being reallycool and just another sign of progress in the automotive industry. I’ve seen a lot of thisprogress in my time, and I’m confident it will continue.

DetoursA Booth of a Different Color
Collision repair education is, in andof itself, a hands-on learning expe-rience. But Kerry Coggins andMatt Pach of the Van Buren Tech-
nology Center in Lawrence, Mich., tookthat concept to the next level, allowingtheir students to fix up a piece of theschool’s equipment — a 19-year-old Garmat spraybooth.
Coggins, the school’s collision repair pro-gram instructor, says that an in-class as-signment of painting the inside of thebooth soon turned into a full-fledgedmakeover initiative.
“The booth is going on about 20 years old,and it just wasn’t looking good,” he said.
Originally, Coggins and his students hadplanned to redo the inside of the booth andpaint the outside white. But he wanted toget more creative than that. He had his stu-dents brainstorm some ideas for their cus-tom spraybooth design, then selected thebest idea as the booth’s current look.
“Coming up with the design was kind ofa collaboration,” he said. “We had aboutthree or four ideas in mind, and then set-tled on the design that we currently have.”
The newly painted spraybooth features awaving American flagdown the side, while thefront is designed to looklike a stone wall withwooden doors. The stu-dents used PPG paint, and it took about threeweeks to completelycraft the new design.Coggins says it wasworth it.
“It was a good projectfor the students,” hesaid. “They now take alot of pride and owner-ship of the job they’vedone, so I think that kindof motivates the studentsin the program becausethey look at it and say‘Yeah, we did that.’” BSB

Something as minor asa half hour here and two-tenths there can producesurprisingly large amounts
of profit, not sales, whenproperly documented, saidNethery. Clips, bulbs, seamsealer and many otherparts frequently dismissedas unimportant can alsofatten the bottom line im-pressively.
Ganske’s segment wastitled, “Leading Change2013,” and offered statisti-cal evidence to support theneed to recognize thechanges in the collision re-pair industry and variousmethods to keep a shop upto date and competitive.
According to Ganske, the industry is currently$16 billion over capacity,
meaning there are toomany shops competing forthe same dollar, which willlead to even more shopsleaving the marketplace inthe near future. Assumingeach shop has average an-nual sales of $1 million, this would mean that16,000 shops would haveto go away in order forshops to maintain thoseaverage sales and remainviable. State Farm has announced that it plans
to embark on an initial phase to roll out
electronic parts ordering to Select Serv-
ice repairers starting in May 2013 and con-
tinuing into 2014. The initial phase will
include major metropolitan areas in Texas,
Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona.
State Farm recently sent this email to
shops in the market areas where the insurer
was piloting its PartsTrader program:
“Your participation and feedback through-
out the pilot has been valuable and we appre-
ciate your contributions to the development of
this program. We are aware that implement-
ing new processes or workflows like this rep-
resents change for you, and we appreciate
your business relationship with State Farm.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to provide
you with information about the Select Serv-
ice program, I would like to inform you
about our plans to roll out electronic parts
ordering to Select Service repairers. The
initial phase will include major metropoli-
tan areas in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico
and Texas. Rollout will start in May and
continue into 2014.
“An application change that may impact
some of your suppliers relates to the elimi-
nation of the fax-only option. This will be
effective when the initial markets go live in
August. If any of your suppliers are partici-
pating as fax-only, we recommend you con-
tact them about participating.
“As one of the pilot market areas, your
continued use of the application remains a
requirement under provision 4.f. of the
Select Service agreement.”
The Society of Collision Repair Specialists
(SCRS) claims another version of the email
that didn’t include the change to eliminate
the fax-only option went to other Select
Service repair facilities around the country.
“To be clear, PartsTrader offered a ‘fax-
only’ option. State Farm, not PartsTrader, is
now advising that suppliers and shops are
not allowed to use that option presented by
the technology company offering the serv-
ice,” said Aaron Schulenburg, executive
director of SCRS. “Did State Farm just
change the rules of the program? State
Farm has said all along that you can use any
supplier you want; but based on their deci-
sion above, is this an indication that they can
change their mind at a future date and
instruct both what system to use, and how
they expect you to use it?”

SCRS Says Insurer-Mandated Parts ProgramsStill Not Showing BenefitsThe Society of Collision Re-pair Specialists (SCRS) isstating that neither StateFarm nor PartsTrader hasprovided a “well-construct-ed explanation” of howtheir parts procurementprogram provides benefitsto collision repairers morethan one year after man-dating the use of the pro-gram in certain U.S. cities.
“While PartsTrader hasmade various software up-dates to address the plenti-ful concerns expressed bytheir end users, correctingand enhancing software is-sues is a necessary functionof being in a technologybusiness, and the industrystill expects that technolo-gy companies should beable to provide a better val-ue proposition for why weshould be using their prod-uct than, ‘Because we gotthe insurance company totell you to’,” said SCRSChairman Ron Reichen.“Perhaps the best questionto ask PartsTrader and oth-er companies similarly po-sitioning their productsthrough insurer-mandatedprograms is, ‘If your plat-forms can benefit the mar-ket enough, could orwould they grow organi-cally without insurer influ-ence over the end user?’”
Other similarly mandat-ed programs have begunto receive more attentionas well, as insurers in-volved continue to requirethe use of programs de-spite what SCRS states is arecognition that there is“growing frustration from

Certainly one of the top buzzwordsin our industry these days is “cycletime.” Every insurance companywants to get its insureds back
in their repaired vehicles as soonas possible, not so much be-cause of the rental carcosts (although they aresubstantial) but mostlybecause the autoproperty and casual-ty insurance businessis very competitive.Every day the cus-tomer is out of theirown car increases thechance that they’ll be-come unhappy enoughto switch carriers. As weall know by now, switchingcarriers is really easy. Fifteen min-utes can save you 15 percent. All you haveto do is click.
A Critical Issue » Over my long tenure inthe industry, the time any vehicle spendsundergoing repair has remained a criticalissue for the body shop as well as the insur-ance carrier and the vehicle owner. Whetherit’s called production output, throughput orcycle time, shorter times are better.
My universal consumer, Mrs. Smith, pays about $100 per month to insure hercar. She has a collision claim about everyseven years. The insurance company’s fi-nancial health depends on Mrs. Smithsending $100 to them every month. If hercar is out of her control and under repairfor 10 to 13 days, she is inconvenienced, worried and susceptible to another insur-ance company’s advertising. If it takes too
long to get her car back, she’ll be sendingher $100 to another carrier.
I really believe the insurance industry isfirst and foremost concerned with a safe
repair of Mrs. Smith’s car. “Pre-accident condition” aren’t
just words in a contract. Once a safe repair is
accomplished, the in-surance company isconcerned with theirdollar cost and thedowntime. An autoaccident often resultsin both a medical and
a property claimagainst the carrier. Med-
ical costs seem to spiralupward every month in
spite of numerous efforts tobring them under control. In addi-
tion, physical injuries are hard to predict. Isthat a $1,500 broken arm or a $15,000 brokenarm? It looks to me like the insurance folksare concentrating on repair costs as an easiernumber to benchmark. Never forget that theinsurance industry has the best data aboutcollision repair anywhere. They’re the onespaying the costs of thousands of auto bodyrepairs every day. Their numbers are collatedby buildings full of actuaries, and they have benchmarks for every possible cost of collision repair.
You’re the Only One » You have no doubtbeen the recipient of the famous “Yourshop is the only one that charges for that”assault by the local adjuster. My 43 years in our industry suggest that conflict is often a local issue between that shop and that adjuster.

Cycle Time

At the home office level, the in-surance company has staggering-ly accurate statistics on everyaspect of collision repair, includ-ing how many new, used or after-market parts are employed, whatpercentage of the repair is paintand material, what percentage ofthe labor is metal, structural, re-finish or sublet and any othercompilation possible. After hun-dreds of thousands of repairs, they have some voluminous andnarrow number ranges. These arethe benchmarks that make up theDRP score sheets. If your shopproduces repairs that consistentlyfall outside insurers’ extensiverange of benchmarks, you’ll be downgraded.
One number that frustrateseveryone involved is the downtimeit takes to complete the repair and
return the vehicle to Mrs. Smith. Ithink that the average repair(around $2,000) could be complet-ed by the average tech (100 percentproduction efficiency) in threedays. And yet statistics suggestthat the average collision repair isout of Mrs. Smith’s control for between 10 and 13 days. No won-der the insurance company and Mrs. Smith are anxious about the process.
Parts Management » My opin-ion (you can argue that I’mwrong, but you can’t argue thatit’s my opinion!) is that the singlebiggest impediment to productivecollision repair is poor crash partsmanagement. Beginning therepair without having all thereplacement parts unwrapped, inspected for damage and
checked against the repair orderis a recipe for delay. Not onlydoes this slow the repair of Mrs.Smith’s car, it causes the techs todemand another work stall andthe shop to buy a second or thirdframe machine. How so? The techbegins repair and disassemblyonly to discover (after huntingaround in the cardboard-wrappedhaystack of crash parts in theback of the shop) that the neededparts are not there. Those missingparts must be ordered andreceived, and sometimes a sup-plement filed and approved, bythe insurance company.
In the meantime, the tech insiststhat he be able to continue work-ing and begins on another vehicle, only to discover that one is miss-ing key repair parts as well. Nowwith three work stalls assigned to

one tech, his productivity (flaghours to contact hours) is high, but by splitting work among threerepairs, his cycle time on each re-pair is slowed to a crawl. Havingwritten about structural repairracks and benches several timesfor BodyShop Business, I thinkmany shops purchased a secondor third frame machine becausetoo often, a car clamped down onthe first one rendered it unusablewhile the missing parts were or-dered and shipped. Can the solu-tion be simpler than buying yetanother $50,000 frame machine or three work stalls per tech? I think so.
The most productive shops Iknow all use parts carts and neverbegin work until all ordered com-ponents are on hand, unpackagedand hanging on the carts ready to
go. There will still be plenty of delays when hidden damage is un-covered during repair and whollyunforeseen parts must be acquired, but the “A” shops don’t start untilthe right tech and the right partsare in place. I advocate using atleast one R & R parts cart and atleast one R & I cart to make thetechnician most efficient. Cycletime remains a moving target; thesame uncontrollable variables thatfrustrate the insurance companyfrustrate the body shop, too. It wasa $2,000 hit, but was it hit in thefront, the rear or the side? Or did atree fall on it? Or did a waywarddeer bounce off it? Nice guys thatall your shop’s techs are, some ofthem are faster than others. Match-ing the right tech to the repair iswhy scheduling collision work isso difficult.
On a Roll » Back in 1970, fewshops used wheeled parts carts; thebest players had an organizedparts storage room with clearlymarked stalls for each RO’s repairparts. But it’s much faster to beable to hang the parts on a cart androll it right to the work stall.
Improve your shop’s cycle timeby doing a better job with yourcrash parts. Mrs. Smith, the insur-ance company and your techni-cians will all be happier withshorter cycle times! BSB

Having a presence online has onepurpose: to bring potential cus-tomers to your door.
If your business is going to have an on-line presence, it’s not enough to just havea website or a Facebook, Google+ or Twit-ter page. Your online presence needs to betruly effective and bring you prospects.Your website needs to be searchable forpeople looking online for the services youprovide. And, most importantly, your on-line presence needs to convert visitorsinto paying customers.
Learn all this and more through twofree online workshops hosted by Body-Shop Business and conducted by me! Iwould like to personally invite you to at-tend one or both of these online workshops.
The first is Website Essentials, an ac-tion-packed hour of all the things yourwebsite needs in order to best serve youand your business. The second is Effec-tive Social Media Management, every-thing you should know about social
media for your business and why it’scrucial to effectively participate in it.Here are details on what I’ll go over ineach workshop:
Website Essentials » In this one-hourworkshop, we’ll cover:
A foundational understanding of thepurpose of having a website.
The importance of having an effectivedesign that stands a great chance of hav-ing the visitor stay on the site longenough for them to do something youwant them to do.
Having “Calls to Action” on thehomepage that get visitors to pick up thephone to call you, fill out contact/esti-mate forms or find your location(s) anddrive to your shop.
Why having a mobile version of yourwebsite is more important today thanever. Mobile websites (“Going MobileWith Your Website,” August 2012 issue ofBodyShop Business), are special versions ofa website that are optimized for a smart-phone’s smaller screen. We’ll cover whatthese should look like and how it’s allabout effective “Calls to Action” on thesemobile versions of a site.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO).This is where the rubber hits the road.SEO is the science of getting your site torank as highly as possible. Lots of devel-opers say they will optimize your site, butdevelopers are a dime a dozen. True Webpresence managers have taken the signifi-cant time required to truly learn the sci-ence of SEO.

Why participating in social media for your business is crucial today
Setting up your accounts forsuccess, Facebook, Google+ andTwitter
Promoting your social media, gaining “Likes,” “Circles of Fans,”“+1’s” and “Followers.”
Killer content that engagesyour audience in the conversation.Just posting “car stuff” and “Hopeeveryone has a nice Monday!”doesn’t cut it. Nobody cares. Samefor posting constantadvertising/promotions. You’vegot to post things that your audi-ence will find fun, things that willdraw them in and elicit some re-sponses. If you get 6 percent of
your audience engaged, that’s con-sidered a success. Sounds easy, butit isn’t. Engagement means credi-bility, and that’s getting noticed bysearch engines.
The importance of effectivelyparticipating in Google+ on Googlesearch rankings.
How frequently should youpost? How much time per weekis likely required to do this cor-rectly on Facebook, Google+ andTwitter?

Touch screens,USB ports, weld history logs and auto detecting/autosetting “smart” modes have become standard features on upper end machines. This is the case with theCompuSpot 900, which allows the operator to test orspecify the metal type and thickness of each individualpiece in the assembly rather than assume that all piecesare exactly the same. The 850 and 900 “assisted” modeswith 120 factory pre-sets offer that same capability. Thequality and performance of the CompuSpot cooling system is alsooutstanding.

One of the biggest storylinesthis season just might be theiconic No. 43 car’s resurgencein the NASCAR spotlight.
Behind the wheel of thelegendary car that often stillsports the famous Petty Blueshade, driver Aric Almirola cur-rently finds himself in the top-10 in NASCAR Sprint CupSeries standings and is emerg-ing as a real Chase contender.
Besides having a Hall ofFame team owner in RichardPetty and an experienced crewchief in Todd Parrott, Almirolahas yet another advantageevery time he wheels the 43down pit road – an award-winning pit crew.
The No. 43 SmithfieldFord over-the-wall crew hasbeen named the Quarter OneMechanix Wear Most ValuablePit Crew – an honor deter-mined by a vote of eachNASCAR Sprint Cup Series
crew chief given quarterly totop-performing pit crews.
“It’s just awesome,” saidrear tire changer DwayneOgles. “Just the history of the43 car in itself and us kind ofbeing the underdogs, it’s prettycool to bring the 43 back.Everybody’s looking at us andit’s cool for the spotlight to beback on the 43 team.”
The No. 43 crew’s preciseperformance this season hashelped to cement Almirola’ssolid start to the 2013 cam-paign. According to Ogles, being recognized by peers fortheir accomplishments is ahuge honor for the entire team.
“It means a lot to me andto all of the guys,” said Ogles, anine-year pit road veteran whohails from Hoover, Ala.“Working out, practicing, building the cars in the shop –there’s a lot that goes into it.We put in a lot of long hours,
so it’s nice to see the perform-ance and results showing.”
In addition to Ogles, the43 over-the-wall crew consistsof: Joe Karasinski (gas man),Jeremy Neeley (jackman), GregDonlin (front tire changer),Lance Hanna (front tire carrier)and Eric Wallace (rear tire carrier). Andrew Carter is theteam’s pit crew coach.
“I can remember as a kidwatching Richard Petty racethe 43 car,” reminisced coachCarter, who trains both theNo. 43 and No. 9 RichardPetty Motorsports pit crews.“He [Petty] was one of myfavorite drivers, so getting towork with these guys every dayis pretty special.”
Carter puts the crewthrough pit stop practice threedays a week and a gruelingweight training regimen fourdays per week.
“We push these guys prettyhard,” said Carter. “Betweenworking on the cars, findingtime to get to practice, and thengoing to the gym and pushingthemselves even harder, theydo a great job at it. The results
have shown on the track.” The Carter-coached No.

Carter also maintains hav-ing a primary sponsor likeSmithfield reaps its own com-petitive benefits, too.
“It always helps to be‘fueled by bacon’ when you’regoing over-the-wall,” quipsCarter. “That extra protein real-ly helps give the guys that extraboost to perform at their best.”
Benefitting from best-in-class gloves, bacon and somegood old-fashioned blood, sweat and tears, Ogles andcompany wouldn’t have it anyother way.
“All the hard work paysoff,” added Ogles. “It’s worthevery bit of it.”

When a body shop ownerhears “sprayed-on bed-liners,” he might think,“Nothing new there.”
And he would be right, becausethey’ve been around for quite sometime. But there is something new, says Jeff Powell of Spray-Liningand Coatings: that certain sprayed-on coatings jobs have traditionallynever been done by body shops.
“We need to open the eyes of theaverage shop and let them knowthis product is not just for thingsthat roll, float or fly,” Powell says.“It’s used on items like stereo speak-ers now, but the technology is notnew. Top quality ‘anti-stick’ on plowdiscs, shears that would normallyrust, grain chutes, grain bins, hop-pers, dump trucks or skid loadersare variations of polyurea.”
To illustrate another example,Powell says imagine you’re at aDisney World water park and noticethe surface is different. You touchit and realize it’s some form of ad-hesive with chopped up tires. Well,it is. This recycled rubber was al-ways shot out of a low-pressuregun and rolled flat. It’s the idealwater-drain.
How does Spray-Lining and Coat-ings stand out from the competition?First, they’re not an investment
group targeting one solution todrop-in bedliners. Unlike bedlinerbrands, they’re a coatings manu-facturer. Spray-Linings is free ofisocyanates, which are volatile car-cinogens that require respirators. They use recycled polymers fromplastics and airplane tires whichbecome high quality liquids at lowercosts (and using zero petro helpsthe environment).
Second, the applicator can decidehow soft and rubbery or hard andstiff the coating should be. Stiffermixtures are usually for slides, chutes, hoppers and dump trucks. If the goal is to slip-proof something, the choice is a mostly flexible andsoft mixture for walkways, steps, stages, livestock trailers or animalholding areas. The recycled powdersare bigger grains for rough itemslike a dairy barn floor or horse trail-er, very fine for chutes, dumps andhoppers or exacting combinationsfor perfect profiles. For the averagetruck bed, it’s usually a low-profileorange peel.
Spray-Lining and Coatings has adifferent take on marketing, too. When you become a dealer, theybuild you a customized website de-signed to target the customers youwant – whether they’re pickup truckowners, truck dealers, truck builders,
welding shops, farmers or water-scape contracting.
The Spray-Lining dealer locatorbrings your quote requests, confer-encing calls immediately with youas the dealer to answer or schedulejobs. The zone for each dealer is atleast 400,000 people. Given thatmetric, Nevada only has two dealerswhile Illinois has seven.
The training Spray-Lining offersis the most comprehensive in theindustry and is included in thedealer cost. The first step is certifi-cation, which means that the dealercan apply any texture, color or pro-file vertically. The training is in-cluded in the dealership for thefirst two years at no cost. and in-cludes on-site help to tool up andprepare for big jobs with loanerequipment as required.
“This is a solution for the guywho wants to stay in the collisionbusiness but is frustrated and can’tget or process enough DRPs, or forthose not willing to deal with DRPs,”says Powell. “Although not inten-tional, a high percent of Spray-Lin-ing shops sold out or droppedcollision altogether.”
Billy Simmons of Bottom LineCoatings in Houston, Texas, saysit’s Spray-Lining’s size and rela-tionship with their customers thatputs them above their competitors.
“Their small size is good for asmall businessman who needs toget on the phone or email and getanswers to issues that happen on adaily basis,” Simmons says. “Buyingmore is not always the answer. When I needed more polyurea, my[Spray-Linings] rep told me to goahead and get a direct order fromtheir raw material supplier becauseI was getting enough drum setswhere they said it would better forme to go direct. They could havecapitalized on that, but they didn’t,and the reason is because we’reworking together like partners.”

COVER STORY

In today’s collision repair industry, reducing repair cycle time is every-one’s goal. And it should be! CSIscores depend on shortening repair
times. Insurance relationships and DRPstatus have cycle time components aswell. More importantly, a collision re-pair shop with low repair cycle timeis much more profitable than one thatrepairs vehicles in a conventional man-ner. Simply stated, if you can reducecycle time, you’ll make more money!
So what are the “secrets” of reducingrepair cycle time? Is “lean” the secret? Is it “5S” or “Six Sigma?” Well…maybe.
Most of the secrets are simply com-mon sense ways to avoid doing any-thing more than once. How manytimes do we have to input estimateinformation? How many times do weorder, reorder and handle parts? Howfrequently do vehicles have to movewithin the facility? Do we frequentlyhave to move vehicles into, out of,then back into the paint shop again?
How much time do technicians spend walking, looking for something or someone?
The secret is to do everything wedo to a vehicle only one time.
Secret #1: Measure to Manage »It is frequently said, “To manage some-thing, you must measure it.” Cycletime can be measured! Most comput-erized management systems have repair cycle time measurement capa-bilities. You can measure “sub-cycletimes,” or components of overall cycletime, if sufficient and accurate infor-mation is fed into the system. Timessuch as drop-off to estimate completionstime, parts order to received time andbooth cycle time are sub-cycle times.Improve a sub-cycle time, and overallcycle time should also improve.
Remember, if the dates being loadedinto your management system aren’taccurate, the cycle time data generatedby the system isn’t accurate.
Keys
Cycle time is one of the most important metrics bywhich shop performance is measured. Here are sevenways you can improve this all-important number andbe the leader in your market.

No management system? Cycle timemay be tracked on an Excel spread-sheet. Work with your accountant orsomeone who is familiar with Excelto build a measurement tool.
Many insurance companies are usingrental car days to measure your cycletime. If you’re working with one ofthose carriers, verify that the reportsgenerated by the rental car companyare accurate. Estimators should checkthe rental car company cycle timereport daily to ensure accuracy. Shopshave reported significant reduction inreported cycle time as a result of check-ing those reports on a daily basis.
Secret #2: Schedule » Scheduleeverything – from estimates to drop-off to delivery. One of the basic tenetsof “lean” is to level the workload, which is done through scheduling.Avoid having an office full of cus-tomers waiting for estimates by sched-uling as many as possible. Avoid theFriday afternoon delivery chaos byscheduling deliveries.
Since almost every vehicle goesthrough the spraybooth, many find itbest to drive the entire facility byscheduling the booth. If you can rea-sonably get five vehicles through yourbooth in one day, schedule five vehiclesper day. It’s just common sense! Butwe still see shops schedule everythingin on Monday, praying that they willall go on Friday. That “pack ‘em inand piss ‘em off” mentality has noplace in a low cycle time facility!
Under the “schedule” category, es-timators should schedule their day.Every day, each estimator should re-view the status of their vehicles, prefer-ably through a “release” meeting. Next, the estimator should physically confirmthe status of their vehicles. Finally, the estimator should call all of theircustomers with updates and scheduledelivery times for the vehicles goingthat day.
Those who have done this report adrastic reduction in the number of incoming customer status calls, increased CSI and a reduction in work-load and stress.
Paint parts off the car. This falls intothe schedule area as it’s useful whenthe metal shop is buried and the paintshop is waiting. Let’s say you’re simplyreplacing a fender and bumper, blend-ing the hood and door. De-trim thehood and door, and leave the damagedfender and bumper on the car. Prepthe door and hood for blending, prep
the new fender and bumper. Roll allof them into the booth and paint thewrecked car, blending the blend panelsand painting the bumper and fender, inside and out. Many have found suc-cess with this concept.
Schedule detail work as well. Thedetail bays are usually full on Fridayafternoon, so detail vehicles when they
arrive at the shop. That way, whenthe vehicle is complete, all that isusually required is a quick wash anddust. Estimating and working on aclean car improves accuracy and qualityas well.
Secret #3: Blueprint » The goal:eliminate supplements. Remember, the “secret” is to do everything once.Supplements are an indication ofmaking a mistake on the initial dam-age evaluation. We, or they, missedsomething. With supplement ratiosin the 60 to 70 percent range, a lot isgetting missed!
Once again, the “secret” is commonsense. Create a system in which everyvehicle is dismantled 100 percent priorto finalizing the damage evaluation. One hundred percent means that every-thing that will be removed for repairis removed, before the beginning ofthe repair.
One shop manager says, “Break allof the clips that are going to break, be-fore you start the repair!” Once they’reall broken, they can be itemized onthe damage evaluation as well as allof the R&I, weld burn damage, fluids, adhesives and everything else we usu-ally forget or just group together asone line on an estimate.
Just like most activities in a bodyshop, spending a little more time atthe beginning of the process makesthe rest of the process go quicker.
Creating a solid blueprint processreduces the need for supplements, in-creases compensation for non-includeditems, increases parts order accuracyand reduces repair cycle time. It’s im-portant to involve your team in thedevelopment of the blueprint process.
Avoid the tendency to “go back tothe way we used to do it” by intro-ducing the concept, then discipliningthe technicians and estimators to followthe new process. Always look for feed-back for ways to improve your process, but do not allow people to revert tothe comfortable ways of old! It takes28 days to change a habit. Implementthe process, then hold everyone ac-countable to maintain the new process.

Secret #4: Parts Handling » Partsordering and receiving processes area primary cause of cycle time delay.Parts problems are frequently theroot cause of those calls to customersexplaining that their car isn’t readyas promised.
Developing a good blueprint processis the first step in improved parts han-dling. Parts taken off the vehicle shouldbe mounted on parts carts in a standardway. Use a “clip card” to mount sam-ples of all clips being replaced. Thenumber of required clips should benoted next to the sample clip.
Fluids, caulking and adhesivesshould be noted and pulled from stockat the blueprint phase. Note the itemnumber and the amount needed onthe damage report to ensure reim-bursement for these critical items. Justas important, this ensures the item isin stock and will be on the cart whenthe technician needs it.
Make one parts order wherever pos-sible. That order should include everypart, nut, bolt and clip required to re-store the vehicle to a crashworthy, pre-loss condition. Work with your partsvendors to receive only complete ordersso that you receive parts one time.
Don’t just receive parts; “mirrormatch” parts when the order arrives.Techs usually check the parts whenthey open the boxes at the vehicle.Mirror matching usually requires abubble-wrapped table with a mirroron the wall. As parts are received, they’re removed from their boxes andplaced on the table to be compared tothe damaged part that’s being replaced. This process catches damaged or wrongparts up front.
Ask the vendor to remove damagedor incorrect parts from the invoice to avoid having to process returns and credits.
Compare replacement clips to
those on the clip card to make surethey’re the correct clips, in the correctnumber, before they’re handed tothe technician.
Parts carts are wonderful tools whenused properly. They should have theirown process, parking places for thosecarts holding damaged parts awaitingnew parts, parking places in the workstalls and a home for when they’reempty awaiting the next teardown forblueprint. Unfortunately, we frequentlysee these tools against the walls or installs holding junk.
Secret #5: Build Quality intothe Repair » You cannot inspectquality into a repair. Yes, we doneed a final QC inspection to catchanything that has been missed, butinspecting at the end is too late. Ifproblems are found, the repair must“go back” to someplace in the shopfor correction. “Going back” is an
COVER STORY » Cycle Time

indication of a system failure and isan expensive event.
Every shop must have written repairquality standards for each step of therepair process. Example: “All filler tobe finished in 150 grit, paint adjacentto repair to be rough feathered in 150grit. All filler to be straight and free ofpin holes.” With that written standardin place, everyone knows what’s ac-ceptable and what’s not.
The secret to reducing rework is tohave the “internal customers” buy thework from the repair person in frontof them.
Example: The body technician isthe parts department’s internal cus-tomer. If the parts order is incompleteor contains damaged or incorrect parts, the body tech should not accept thejob until the problems have been re-solved. The paint prepper is the bodytech’s customer. If we use the qualitystandard above, if the repair is not
straight, contains pinholes or is finishedin 80 grit, the paint prepper cannot ac-cept the repair.
If an internal customer proceedswith a sub-standard repair, the fault isassigned to them. Example: At finalQC, it’s discovered that a fender todoor gap is bad and there’s a dent in arepaired and repainted panel. We couldblame the body tech for sending apoor repair to paint, but isn’t it thefault of the paint department for ac-cepting and processing a poor repair?
Create systems to catch problemsearly. Fixing something on the firstday is much cheaper than fixing it anhour before the car is scheduled to go.
Secret #6: Create a Positive andMotivated Workplace » Make workfun. One manager began his journeyto the positive workplace when henoticed that he never said a positiveword to anyone. He was too busy
putting out the daily fires to be niceto his fellow employees! Once he sawthat in himself, he simply used a labelmaker and printed “say somethingnice today” on a label, which heplaced on his computer screen. Thatreminder forced him to find someonedoing something well and praisingthem for it.
Today, he uses several cheap orfree ideas to keep the shop positive.Example: one contest he constantlyruns is a “catch someone else doingsomething right” competition. Basi-cally, if you do something above andbeyond, you’re given an award statue. But you don’t get to keep it. You haveto catch someone else doing somethingright, and the award is passed alongto them. They have to find someoneto give the award to, and so on. Theaward is rotated among the entireteam, rewarding people for going“above and beyond.”

Secret #7: Fix One Thing At a Time» Everyone has problems. Every col-lision center does some things twice.
So how do you reduce repair cycletime? Cycle time is reduced by fixingone thing at a time. Find an area wherecycle time is impacted, correct thatissue, then find another area impactingcycle time and fix that one.
The process is called “continuousimprovement.” You can read a lot onthe subject. The process is frequently
included in lean training and referencebooks such as Liker’s The Toyota Way.
Step one: Make a list of issuesthat delay cycle time in your shop.Keep log sheets of problems as theyoccur. Track these delays for a coupleof weeks and you’ll find plenty of rea-sons production stops in the shop!
Step two: Pick one problem. Lookat everything that causes delay andpick one. Maybe it’s a big expensiveissue, or perhaps it’s one that’s easy tosolve. Just pick one, and only one.
Step three: Determine the rootcause of the problem. Simply sayingthat we don’t hit scheduled deliverydates doesn’t define the root cause. You may have to ask the question“why” five times to find the root cause, referred to as a “5 Why Analysis.”
Example: The problem is that “weare not meeting our promise dates.”
Why #1: “Why are we not meetingour promise dates?”
Answer: “Because we have to color, sand and buff every car.”
Why #2: “Why do we have to color, sand and buff every car?”
And so on. You may find that onthe fifth “Why?” the issue is excessivedirt in the paint caused by poorpaint prep work, a dirty booth anda dirty painter.
Step four: Develop several writtenprocesses that should solve that oneproblem. Include the people in yourbusiness to determine what the bestpossible solution may be for your oneproblem. Remember: People will sup-port what they help to create!
Develop solutions that focus on theroot cause. In the above example, thesolution for missing target deliverydates may be to train and standardizethe process for proper prepping of avehicle, booth maintenance and main-taining a more sanitary environmentin which to paint.
Step five: Pick a solution and tryit. Implement the solution. Find a wayto measure the problems, too, so thatyou can see if your solution works. Sotest your solution, and if it works, great! That’s the way we’ll do thatfrom now on. If it doesn’t work, great!
COVER STORY » Cycle Time
42 June 2013 | BodyShop BusinessCircle 42 for Reader Service
Circle 43 for Reader Service
At least we found that one didn’twork, so let’s try another!
Step six: When the problem is
solved, write up the solution as a Stan-dard Operating Procedure (SOP). Hint:Keep it simple! Make sure everyone is
on board with the new process. Man-agement must reinforce and disciplinethe solution until it becomes “the waywe do things here.”
Step seven: Pick your next prob-lem, and do it all over again.
Summary » There really isn’t a secretto cycle time reduction. Yes, there arelots of things people in collision centersdo to reduce cycle time, but none ofthose are secrets. The way to reducerepair cycle time is to begin to measureit. Then institute a program of contin-uous improvement to reduce cycletime, one problem area at a time. Ohyeah, you never get to stop! BSB

There’s a little known tip thatI would like to pass down topainters who might havenever heard about it. It con-
cerns how to isolate adjacent panelsfrom sealer overspray when blendinginto them. I call it the “two step.”
The two step was passed downto me from another painter at theCarcoa franchise I worked at in themid-1980s in Los Angeles, where Iwas painting up to eight cars a day.He had been painting six to eightcars a day for three years at the fran-chise, so needless to say he had thetwo step down pat. When paintingthat many cars, you have to makethe task as easy as possible withminimal movements around the vehicle, and that’s what the two stepallows you to do.
Boy, the maskers were fast, too;one guy had worked there for fiveyears masking cars. It wasn’t accurateby any means, but heck – it wasonly $129 for a complete and only$250 for a complete color change.
The paint was synthetic enamel, soit was very glossy but could onlyhold up to the sun for a couple yearsbefore starting to disintegrate.
The used car dealers were ourbiggest customers back then. I wassurprised they gave us Cadillacs,Porsches and other expensive carsto paint, but the price was right. The booth had another set of doorsyou drove through into the bakebooth, then you opened the entrancedoors and had five more cars sittingthere, masked off and ready to paint.Argh! I don’t miss those days, butall that high volume work gave mea lot of experience.
The Two Step » First, I jambed outthe used doors on the vehicle. I hadto fix some dings and primer andblock them, otherwise they wouldhave already been sealed andbasecoated on the outside and therewould have been no reason to sealthem on the exterior.
Before I masked off the quarterpanel and front fender, I preppedthem to blend and sprayed adhesion
promoter on them and the surround-ing areas. I also had to paint thedoor jambs the day before as thecenter pillar had to be pulled andthe doors fitted a couple times.
Some painters shuffle around likean old rock star on stage when there’sno need to walk back and forth. Thephotos below show how I keep myleft foot planted in the same positionand, by taking just two steps, I increase my reach so I can cover 10feet with each movement back andforth. This two-step method saves alot of energy if you do a lot of paint-ing all day long.
If I hadn’t masked off the primedand blocked doors, the sealer wouldhave traveled to the top of the fenderand you would have had to paint overit and then have a perfect butt matchwith the hood. I sealed the doors, baked the vehicle, then put on colorcoats till I got good coverage before Iremoved the paper from the fenderand quarter. I saw that my match wasvery close, which was good, so I pro-ceeded to do my last four coats, blend-ing a bit further each time.
I like to think that most people inthis industry pass on the tips theyget from others, just like I’m doinghere. My best to all the painters outthere! BSB

Duplicating what the OE factory did during
assembly isn’t as simple as it seems…because
not all OE-recommendedprocedures duplicate the
factory build process.
By Mitch Becker
48 June 2013 | BodyShop Business
Do You Duplicate OE...
Or Not?A
shop has decisions to make every day. One of those decisions iswhen and where to follow manufacturer guidelines on a damagedvehicle while determining a repair plan.
Following all the manufacturer guidelines on that vehicle seems simpleenough – just duplicate what the factory did during assembly, right? Butit’s not as simple as one would hope. To know when to duplicate andwhen not to becomes an issue of knowing what is needed. Not all repairprocedures duplicate the factory build process.
Adding to the problem is that some shops choose not to follow vehiclemanufacturer guidelines. In some cases, shops can’t due to equipmentand/or training issues.
A Question and Answer » When a vehicle comes into a shop and is pre-sented to the technician for the structural and/or body repair, a questionnormally forms in his mind: How am I going to do this? That questionmay have many different answers. The variables sometimes seem limitless. The answers will vary with the way the estimate is written, the trainingand ability of the technician, and the capabilities and resources of theshop. The final result must be a vehicle correctly repaired to meet all

structural and safety requirementsthat were designed into the vehicle. And it has to look perfect.
Everyone can say “just duplicatewhat the factory did during assem-bly.” But the problem may be thatthe build process at the factory maynot be the correct repair procedure.Looking up recommended repairprocedures becomes more impor-tant with the change in designs.
Look It Up » Look into the deci-sion on the estimate. First, all thedamage needs to be addressed. The industry mentality haschanged in the last few years towhere shops now realize that ad-dressing hidden damage as soonas possible is important. We as anindustry have seen the value indoing the disassembly first to seeall the damage, and this has im-proved cycle time dramatically.
What happens next is critical tothe proper repair of the vehicle.
To write an accurate estimate, theproper repair procedure must be
looked up. In the repair industry,we have so many rules and guide-lines we expect estimators to follow. These guidelines involve how we

write and download information forthe insurance companies.
It doesn’t help that many insurancecompany guidelines are different inhow parts are looked up, used andentered. These duties are time con-suming for the estimator. The practiceof writing the estimate and lettingthe technician look up the procedures
can allow for the cost of repairs notmatching the estimate. I know timeis something we all never seem tohave enough of, especially for esti-mators. The truth is, this processcould be costing money to a shopand posing a liability.
Granted, some repairs, like replac-ing a bumper cover, are straightfor-
ward, and many estimators have ex-perience in knowing what is theright procedure. But what about re-placing a B-pillar reinforcement? Isthat so straightforward? We need torealize that automakers are changingthe designs faster than in the past.A procedure from one year may notapply to the following year’s model.
This is evident when you attendtraining classes and see that theamounts of HSS and UHSS are in-creased every year. The body formatmay be the same, but the structureis changing. A damaged 2007 vehicleand the same 2008 vehicle with sim-ilar damage may have different sec-tioning procedures due to increasedstructural enhancements. Withoutlooking up procedures, how doesan accurate estimate get written? The hidden cost of not looking upthe procedures during estimatingis that now a technician will haveto look them up. When a technicianhas to look up procedures, he’s notworking on vehicles. That alonecosts a shop money. As a whole, atechnician and a shop are producingrevenue when the technician hashis or her hands on the vehiclebeing repaired.
Factory vs. Shop » Most estimat-ing systems are pretty good at put-ting all the pricing and labor intothe repairs for estimate accuracy. In some cases, the repair proceduredoes not duplicate what the factoryused during assembly. Hopefully, these procedures are passed on tothe technician to follow and cor-rectly repair the damage accordingto manufacturer specs.
For aluminum intensive vehicles,we’ve seen rivet bonding beingused in place of welding as a repair. On the new Cadillac STS, we’veseen that the roof needs to be ad-hesively bonded instead of MIGbrazed. These are changes in rec-ommended repair procedures asthe factory can do some proceduresthat the body shop can’t.
Other procedures can be duplicated

in the shops, but it takes training, equipment and dedication – whichmay include considerable expenses.Welding would be a first consideration.
Spot Welding » Does the shophave the ability to duplicate factorywelds? Investing in a squeeze typeresistance spot welder (STRSW) isa big decision. Shops that havepulled the trigger and made that
leap have found that it’s a worth-while venture. Compared to MIGwelding, the time and labor savedmakes a considerable difference. Inmany shops, the difference in pro-duction can be measured immedi-ately. Some welders claim to befactory welders or manufacturer-recommended, besides being ableto duplicate the strength and lookof the weld and the ease of opera-
tion. Spot welders also reduce theHeat Affect Zone (HAZ) that maydamage steels or create corrosionhot spots.
Another feature of STRSW ma-chines is the ability to duplicate cor-rosion protection. The use of weldbonding by many manufacturersgives increased vehicle rigidity andcorrosion protection along withwelds, which reduces many of thecreaks, pops and groans of vehicleswhile driving. To not duplicate thisprocedure can increase the possibilityof a warranty issue on corrosion(costing the shop money) or an un-happy customer due to increasednoise while driving (costing the shopits reputation).
It’s surprising how many shopsdon’t duplicate this process. It takestraining and some time, but thequality of the repair outweighseverything else. Once a techniciangets proficient at weld bonding, the time is negligible.
Some things are difficult at bestto duplicate. Rock chip coatings onsome vehicles continue to be a chal-lenge. Supply companies are strivingto find better ideas.
One innovation that has recentlycome out is a file belt sander thatallows even the strongest steel spotwelds to be removed quickly, easilyand cost effectively. The days ofbuying large quantities of expensivedrill bits may be coming to an end. With this tool, you can grind thewelds from the backside of a salvagepanel and weld bond the panelmuch faster and easier than before. This allows a shop to duplicate aprocedure even with salvage parts. These types of innovations everyday improve a shop’s ability to du-plicate a vehicle manufacturer’sbuild process. But we have a longway to go.
Get on the Same Page » To du-plicate or follow the proceduresfrom the vehicle manufacturer iswhat we do to give the customer asafe and quality repair. Knowing if

we should not duplicate and use a different procedurerecommended by vehicle manufacturers is also whatwe as professionals need to know for the same result.
Whether you use vehicle manufacturer websitesor repair information companies to look up the pro-cedures, make sure estimators and technicians areon the same page. Follow through with techniciansto make sure they understand why. Training as towhy a procedure should be used is readily availablethrough I-CAR and vendors. This saves time andmoney for all but also keeps a shop’s reputation ofthe highest standard.
To not follow procedures or to not duplicatewhen is possible is a business decision that couldcost a technician and shop. In a dream world, wecould do it all. In our world, we must make deci-sions. Follow procedures and duplicate where it’s possible. To make a decision not to do sobecause we don’t think it’s necessary shortchangesour customers. BSB

“Everyone has to do their bit,”says Rowley. “If everyone does alittle, that makes a big difference.”
One of the differences it hasmade is making his employees feelbetter about their work environ-ment and their personal health.
“Some stuff shops used for years
and years was pretty potent, sothere were lots of masks andbreathing apparatuses,” Rowleysays. “Those obviously don’t goaway, but it’s just much nicer ifyou know your guys are handlinga much safer product.”
Health benefits are one thing,
but if painters aren’t convincedthat changing all that they knowwill result in better quality jobsand the same or better productivity, they most likely will never buyin. Fortunately, Rowley didn’t haveto fight too many of those battles.
“If you have the right guy atthe right place and work withthem, then obviously what can be-come a major issue becomes a mi-nor issue,” he says. “We were luckyin that our two guys are very proac-tive and fairly young and have alot of experience but are not toostuck in their ways and are up totrying something new. If it’s new, they enjoy playing with it to seewhat’s better. Plus, we had reallygood support from our paint man-ufacturer and supplier.”
That is one of the key differencesRowley, who is from England, sawin how Europeans transitioned towaterborne versus Americans.Whereas in Europe the paint man-ufacturer was the only entity pro-viding training support to a shop,in the U.S. a shop is getting supportfrom two entities: the jobber andthe paint manufacturer.
“[In the U.S.] you have a middleguy and you need that partner tobe on the same page as you asmuch as the manufacturer,” Rowleysays. “If you have a good partner-ship with the jobber and manu-facturer, things will come together.”
Rowley says the support hisshop received was “more than ad-equate” due to the “seamless” part-nership between the paintmanufacturer and the jobber, mak-ing the transition to waterbornesimple and easy.
“If you have really good supportand good trainers who your guystrust who work with them anddon’t just give them a spec sheetand a 20-minute lesson, then thetransition is a piece of cake,” saysRowley. “When the trainers comein for a whole week and workalongside your guys and even paint

a car or two, when they see thatthey’ll lead them halfway and alsothat they can paint as well, that’swhat makes a difference.”
What also makes a difference,
Rowley says, is an employer thatis fully committed and willing todedicate whatever resources ittakes to make the switch.
“Hopefully the employer wouldn’t
make everyone change unless theyhad everything ready,” he says.“If you’re not going to invest in the right equipment and give your employees everything they need, then you will have an uphill battle.”
Speaking of equipment, Rowleysays he did not have to retrofitany of his spraybooths as theywere fairly new and designed forwaterborne.
“If you had old ovens, youlooked at how fast they could getup to temperature and their effi-ciency in creating heat,” he says.“Nowadays, you buy an ovenbased on how fast it cycles air.”
Rowley says his team does use

a few hand dryers now and againfor additional airflow to odd, hard-to-reach places.
Measuring productivity gains hasbeen a little tricky, admits Rowley,in part because the spraybooths rep-resent the bottleneck in the shop. Heequates it to pouring water through
a funnel: unless you open the spoutup, the water won’t go through anyfaster no matter how big the top ofthe funnel is. With that said, he saysflashoff times are better so the totaltime has decreased. The other com-plicating factor is the current stateof the collision industry.
“The industry at the momentisn’t ‘flat out,’ so it’s one of thosethings where we’re definitely moreefficient per job but we’re not bust-ing out the door with work to beable to accurately measure every-thing,” Rowley says. “It may onlybe five to six minutes per car inthe whole paint process, but thatadds up.”
Rowley believes flash time willimprove even more after they in-stall a nitrogen system that claimsto make paint land essentially dryand promises a transfer rate ofmore than 90 percent.
Would Rowley’s painters go backto solvent-based paints if given thechoice? Rowley asserts that the an-swer is a resounding no. Proof isthat he let them test all the old andnew versions of basecoat, primer, clear, etc. Seven people in the paintdepartment got to vote four to fivetimes each based on the number ofproducts tested. Out of 36 votes, 35were in favor of the new product.
Conclusion » “Basically, dependingon your size, you have to reduceyour VOC emissions by law,” saysRowley. “Plus, you morally shouldbe doing it. You have a moral obli-gation to the area in which you op-erate and you presumably live near. You also have a moral obligation toyour employees to keep things ashealthy as possible. If you have achoice of two products and one ishealthier than the other, why wouldyou not choose it? Whether it’s forhealth reasons, environmental rea-sons or business reasons, it’s theright thing to do.” BSB

Houston, Texas, is one of the most humidcities in America. With an average relativehumidity of almost 80 percent year-round,the great outdoors feels more like a sauna
than fresh air. One would assume that water-based paint would
be ill suited for this sort of environment, but Brandon
Gary, general manager of Champion’s CollisionCenter, disproves this expectation. His shop wasthe first in Texas to make the switch from solventto waterborne through Sherwin-Williams back in2009, and he hasn’t looked back since.
“It was one of those things where everyone knewit was coming,” said Gary. “I told my staff, ‘This issomething that we’re not going to have a choice in[eventually], so we might as well bite the bulletand be done with it.”

Like many longtime collision re-pair veterans, Gary’s team of painterswas a little reluctant to the idea ofchange initially. But they took itupon themselves to do their home-work and learn as much about wa-terborne as they could. YouTubewas a primary resource for learning;his painters regularly looked upvideo clips about water-based paint and let the information sinkin. “They really started studying itbefore we even implemented it,” he said.
When switching to waterborne, many shops face the task of pur-chasing new equipment or retro-fitting their booths in order toaccommodate the change. Thiswasn’t the case with Champion’s,as Gary says he didn’t even haveto retrofit the shop’s UniCurespraybooth.
Houston’s high humidity index
isn’t something to be ignored, soGary took the necessary steps tomake the transition process as feasibleand easy as possible. He installedventuri blowers and dryers to speedup the drying process., as well as a gauge to track the humidity in the shop.
Ultimately, it took about three tosix months for the painters to be-come fully acclimated to the paint, but in the end, Gary says paintingand drying time has been about thesame as it was with solvent.“Thesepainters had been spraying solvent-based paint for so long that theyknew all the tricks of the trade,” hesaid. “Water-based is totally differ-ent. You have to go about it a totallydifferent way.”
The “Green” Appeal » The firstand most obvious benefit to goingwaterborne is that it’s an environ-mentally friendly alternative to sol-vent-borne paint. But “going green”doesn’t just make Mother Naturehappy — it also makes businessesmore appealing to work with.
Gary saw the switch as an op-portunity to better market his busi-ness to insurance carriers. Jumpingon that idea, he decided to host aneducational session at his shop forDRPs and other insurance carriersabout the benefits of water-basedpaint. He invited Sherwin-Williamsto come into the shop to lead aclass, which was conducted at thepaintbooths. “We were sprayingbase coat in one booth and sprayingwater-base in the other, so we couldshow them the difference in dryingtime, everything across the board,”said Gary.
After giving hands-on demonstra-tions of waterborne paint, Gary andthe Sherwin-Williams team conducteda roundtable discussion, answeringany questions the insurance carriershad about the paint. “I told Sherwin-Williams to be honest with them andtell them the good and bad, the prosand cons,” said Gary.
It turns out that Gary’s efforts ofpioneering waterborne in Texasrubbed off on the insurance carriers, who eventually began to encourageother shops throughout the state tochoose the greener option.
Colorful Options » Another ben-efit of going waterborne is theplethora of color choices, allowingfor better color matching whenpainting a customer ’s vehicle.“There are a lot more color optionsand opportunities to better matchthe vehicle,” said Gary.
The PROSPECTOR Color Refer-ence System makes it easy forpainters to identify the necessarycolors for vehicles, even when thevehicle’s code is unknown. Theassortment of colors also allowsfor some flexibility with colormatching, according to Gary. “Ba-sically, if you’re painting a Nissan, there might be a Ford color that’sreally close and matches betterthan a Nissan color,” he said. “Theway they’ve arranged their decksgives you every opportunity tomatch the color of the vehicle with-out doing a lot of homework orspray-outs.”
Ahead of the Game » Despite hav-ing to learn a new technique, Cham-pion Collision’s painters likewaterborne just as much or evenmore than the solvent system. “Itdries just as fast,” said Gary. “Thepaint flashes really quick, so youcan actually put tape on the paintand start painting the second colora little quicker than solvent-basedin many circumstances.”
Aside from the benefits of thepaint itself, Gary says that the No.1 plus of converting to waterborneon his own accord was gettingahead of the game. “Go ahead andget it done before you have to, because the learning curve doestake awhile,” he advised. “It’s betterto learn it now than when you’re under pressure.” BSB

Many collision repair facilities say that theiremployees are initially apprehensive whenswitching from solvent-based paint to waterborne. That was the case with Chuck
Dietch, but validation after the switch has come inthe form of effusive praise from his crew.
“They tell me they would never go back to solvent,”says Dietch, second-generation owner of CenterSquare Motors in Blue Bell, Pa. “In fact, they say thatif they left my shop, they would only go work at an-other shop if it sprayed water.”
Dietch made the switch in September 2011. Notonly were his employees dealing with a change towaterborne but also a change in paint brands, so thechallenges were plenty. But BASF eased those chal-lenges with training and guidance.
“My two main painters went to their three-dayschool,” Dietch says. “Two weeks later, BASF hadpeople at our shop to help us through it.”
Center Square was the first shop in its area to
transition to waterborne. That’s Dietch’s style: to be proactive.
“I read about how many shops in California waitedto switch till near the compliance date, and as aresult the jobbers were overwhelmed and couldn’tsufficiently train the workforce,” says Dietch. “Ididn’t want to fall into that trap.”
Another one of Dietch’s philosophies is to setyourself up for success. Following that strategy, hehad his paint manufacturer visit his shop to evaluatewhat it might need to assist the transition to water-borne. Based on the evaluation, the shop switchedto different airlines and went to a rotary screw com-pressor for the paint shop for more volume. Theyalso had a dryer developed that would serve thewhole paint shop (two downdraft booths and twoheated downdraft prep decks), eliminating the needfor individual units.
“My belief is that if I’m going to do it, I’m going todo it right,” Dietch says. “I believe you should set upthings for success, not failure.”
Humidity is a concern in Center Square’s region. In fact, the shop was dealing with 90 percent relativehumidity already in May, which necessitates usingfans to help dry the basecoat. Still, Dietch doesn’t seeit as a major problem.
“The paint might dry more slowly on humid days, but I don’t hear my guys complaining. They’veadapted well to different processes and proceduresto make things work. Overall, our efficiencies arebetter, and my profit on materials is better, too, so ithas been a win-win.”

“Profit in your Pocket”...That’s what it’s all
about...and where is the biggest bottleneck in theshop? The paint department. And where is thegreatest profit potential? Also in the paint depart-
ment. Painting with nitrogen in place of compressed airwill produce shorter cycle times; a deeper luster in yourclears; less overspray in the booth; longer filter life;cleaner paint work; and here’s the big one...a Guaranteed15% minimum reduction in wet material usage! In fact, many shops spraying using nitrogen are seeing materialreductions upwards of 20% to 30%!!!
The nitrogen (100% moisture free...and that’s verygood news for waterborne users fighting humidityproblems) atomizes far better than straight compressedair. The result is better coverage with less coats. Visualizepaint droplets as BBs (with nitrogen) or golf balls (withcompressed air). There are less voids between the BBsthan the golf balls...therefore better coverage. You knowwhy an HVLP gun gets better transfer of paint to the
vehicle? The answer is better atomization... Painting with nitrogen is like putting your HVLP gun
on steroids... It’s that powerful.
So where do you get the nitrogen from? Well, not ina bottle from your gas supplier...actually it’s free...it’sin the air all around us...you’re breathing it as youread this. You see, an air molecule is made up of 78%nitrogen 21% oxygen, some argon and a few other“trace” gases.
All you need is a nitrogen “Generator” machine
in your shop.
Here’s how it works...Air from your compressoris supplied to the “Nitro 9000” unit and “purified”through our exclusive 5 filter system. It then enters themembrane where the nitrogen is separated from theother gases (a slight “blending” process takes place)and the nitrogen rich “fluid carrier” is sent to thepainter through a special air line...It’s that simple!!!

Making such a big change in hiscompany, Dietch was intent on pub-licizing it to the community at large. An advertising agency he workswith distributed a press release, andseveral local newspapers contactedhim, with one actually visiting hisshop and interviewing him. Plus,he has a display in the receptionarea telling customers they’re now
“green.” Brochures arealso placed in cus-tomers’ cars alertingthem to the shop’s de-cision to become envi-ronmentally friendly.
Dietch is also thrilledthat he has a healthier
work environment for his employees.“Even though our mixing room wasventilated, you would still smell thatsolvent smell,” he says. “Now, withwater, that smell is nowhere nearwhere it was.”
Plus, his painters are telling himthat the waterborne product is lesstricky than solvent, particularly con-cerning metallics.
“You have to use different tech-niques, but my guys say it’s easierto blend and fill your metallicsout. With some solvent metalliccolors, you had to really have goodtechnique. But now, for exampleblending silver across a hood, water is much better and reducesthe chance of creating a halo effect or hazing.”
The bottom line, Dietch feels, isthat shops need to adapt to variouschanges in the industry or risk be-coming extinct.
“You can’t do the same old sameold,” says Dietch. “If you’re stuckin that mindset, you’ll be left behind.Things change, and maybe not forthe better sometimes. But you stillneed to look into things and seewhere you need to be and what youneed to do, or you’ll be left on thewayside.” BSB

The popularity of hybrids and the growing useof technology and sophisticated materials invehicle manufacturing have made the repairprocess more complex and specialized. New
and updated repair procedures are published regularlyto account for manufacturing advancements, yet keep-ing up with these changes can feel like a full time job.
When looking up a repair procedure today, repairersare on virtual scavenger hunt, pulling bits of repairdata from multiple, unconnected systems, databasesand manuals. This is time-consuming and can lead torekeying errors and errors in pulling the wrong infor-mation needed for a specific repair. These errors arecostly – to the bottom line, to the shop’s reputationand to a relationship with a DRP partner.
CCC ONE™ Repair Methods – Repair DataWhere You Need
CCC is able to offer CCC ONE™ Repair Methods,a fully integrated automotive shop software solutionthat embeds repair procedures data from major OEMsinto its CCC ONE™ Estimating. Now, all of the pro-cedure information you need is available when theestimate is being written and when the repair isbeing done.
By offering visual cues and prompts, repairers andtechnicians are alerted when OEM information isavailable or needed for a job. And CCC ONE RepairMethods helps guide repairers in the use of OEM
data, when and where it’s required. Compliance withDRP partner and regulatory guidelines for repairersis a snap.
CCC ONE Repair Methods offers: ● Automated indicators tell a repairer when OEM
data is available and the type of data it is.● Bookmarking features allow repairers to flag
relevant data for future reference and for futureusers so technicians are automatically promptedto review data when they clock into a job.
● As part of the CCC ONE® hosted model, data isupdated online, keeping information current andready to use without the need for manual CDand DVD updates.
● Information and procedure details are availableto solve any repair.

Ganske emphasized that investing intraining, tools and equipment, andpolishing business and marketingskills, is imperative if a shop is to remain viable in an increasinglycomplex industry.
Parts Programs/Standards »After lunch, Aaron Schulenburg, ex-ecutive director of the Society of Col-lision Repair Specialists (SCRS),reported on topical issues currentlyfilling the trade publication head-lines. The first topic was insurance-mandated parts procurementprograms such as PartsTrader, andSchulenburg discussed the feedbackSCRS has received on how the vari-ous programs have been received invarious markets. He pointed outthat, despite being in place for morethan a year in some markets, there
has still been no evidence presentedthat the programs are providing anyof the suggested benefits to collisionrepairers. Looking at a variety of car-riers utilizing different procurementplatforms and repair facilities oper-ating under their program, Schulen-burg indicated how cumbersomeand intrusive these mandated pro-grams can be to the shop when itcomes to managing vendors andparts. In one instance, the carriercommunication recognized the“frustration” repair facilities feltfrom being obligated to order a vari-ety of parts, each from a differentsupplier, each in a different state.
Schulenburg also addressed theongoing dialogue between I-CARand repair organizations regardingthe recognition of OEM published re-pair procedures as the industry’sstandard of repair. His presentationdemonstrated the importance of suchdiscussion as he pointed out con-trasts between “standard” programsin the U.K. and the U.S. In light of re-cent legislation filed in the U.S.House and Senate seeking to repealparts patent laws, he offered aslideshow presentation illustrating
common problems shops experiencewhen procuring both used and after-market parts that lead to parts re-turns, exposing the incredible wasteof time and money shops are subject-ed to when attempting to incorporateunfit parts into the repair process.

shops that are obligated to change their internal business practices to accom-modate the changing rules of the DRP relationships.”
SCRS cites one email from an American Family field adjuster to a group ofrepair businesses on the program that said, “I’ve received lots of feedbackfrom almost everyone about APU [Solutions]. There is some good with it, andthen there is some very frustrating/difficult stuff to deal with. One of the ma-jor concerns I’m hearing about right now is APU recommending all these littleoutlying suppliers that are requiring credit cards before you can order a part.Shops are not set up to be dealing with credit cards all over the country, andtruly local suppliers such as Keystone don’t require them. Another concern isfreight and, more specifically, how returns are handled. None of these aremaking things easier for you, and that’s frustrating for everyone.”
Added SCRS Immediate Past Chairman Aaron Clark, “Despite the obvi-ous recognition of the hardships these mandates are potentially creating, anddespite the rapidly evolving marketplace where it appears more and moreonline parts procurement solutions are entering into the marketplace, it isbaffling why carriers continue to dictate process, rather than seeking a re-sults-driven relationship with repairers. It certainly leaves the impressionthat there is more to gain for the insurance industry than the desire for in-creasingly informed selection of parts choices from reasonable vendors andmore efficient processing.”

Great location in Commercial Center 7,720 sq. ft. of building • 29,982 sq. ft. of land
unique and different and have another side other
than this professional collision center side.
You also did a ‘Harlem Shake’ video. Is it important to you
to instill fun in your work environment?Yes, I think that balance is quite
necessary because, in the work
environment, there are so many
deadlines and so much exactness
that the pressure level is very
intense. When you can interrupt
that by having a happy, fun-loving time
every once in awhile, it really breaks
down that pressure and makes it more
tolerable. Plus, you get to see people
team up together to do something fun,
and when it comes time to team up and
do something exact, it’s a little easier to
do knowing you have these good times
behind you.
You actually employ a full-timevideographer to shoot all these
videos, correct?Yes, it’s not traditional for a collision shop to
have one, but I wanted to expose the public to
what we do. We hired a videographer to shoot
the grand opening of our Berlin, N.J. location,
and he did such a fantastic job exposing the many
facets of the people who built that fifth location
that I started to wonder how we could capitalize on
having someone like this in our life who could
show another side of collision. We could show how
we could fix a $20,000 wreck and then showcase
parts of our life that may not have anything to do
with collision.
Talk about your Harley. It’s a 2003 Road King Classic. It has been
transformed now for the second time and serves as
a showpiece we can take to different shows to
expose our talents to others. What’s more important
than the shows themselves is the camaraderie the
people from our company develop while there. They
choose to go to these shows because they enjoy
each other and it gives them a sense of pride when
we take first place or even if we don’t place. BSB
Man, you have a lot of tattoos.Yes, I don’t know how many I have
because one seems to lead into
another, but both my arms are tat-
tooed, my entire chest, the top por-
tion of my back and part of my leg.
My left arm is totally dedicated to
Rocco’s Collision and the collision industry.
One part says, ‘Only the strong survive,’ to show
that only the strong can withstand the pressure
of being a top shop. I also have a frame rack
inside a storm, a dragon holding a paint gun
