Please can I remind members that all the committee are volunteers; we all respond as soonas possible and some positions, for example, the librarian in particular, involve a lot of time-

consuming research to find out details for members. We sometimes go on holiday, so please be patient, we will do our best to respond quickly.

When contacting us by email please put BSA in the subject line when emailing committee members as someof them have very spam like addresses at yahoo or hotmail and can inadvertently be bounced at times.

July all ready; where does time go?After April’s excellent weather, the

following months have been a tadrandom, giving the riding experiencean exciting or unpredictableadventure. Racing at the GP and theTT have been victims of the elements. Those that ventured to the Isle ofMan did witness some good racing –eventually.

Wicksteed Open Day, supportedby many branches and

members, took place at the beginningof June, and many thanks must begiven for all the hard work that JohnMichael and his many helpers put intomaking the event a success. We areawaiting the report and results as thecopy date passed before the event.

Before we know it the nights will bedrawing in, so least you forget, fill

ENGINE DEvELOPMENT PERSONNELStar readers might care to contemplate the collective expertise on display in this picture of formerBSA engine development personnel who met at The Woodman’s Rest in Shirley, near Birminghamon 18th May.

Gathered for lunch were, (from left to right), Ray Beach, Alan Sandilands, Colin Washbourne, IvanPerkins, David Harrison, Bob Trigg and Peter Brown; all intimately concerned with experimentalwork on machines including the A7/A10, Gold Star, MC1 and MC4 through much of thenineteen-fifties, and all making further distinguished contributions to the automotive industry andmotorcycle sport. This correspondent was privileged to see and hear proceedings as a guest.

Any discussion amongst such individuals was bound to air a wealth of knowledge, tempered byhumour and some regrets, as may be discerned from the following points which were amongthose that emerged;-

1. The prototype MC4 (‘half an A7’) 250 cc bike really was a good one which BSA should haveput into production.

2. The best dynamometer power obtained from the notorious 250 cc MC1 experimental raceengine was about 35 bhp at very high revs, but it was not mechanically reliable at that output. BobTrigg’s best test ended with a blown piston, and a broken con-rod curtailed the peak effortobtained by Alan Sandilands. Bob opined that the engine was actually ‘over-valved’ for its size, and that the bad masking of the air-flow over the cylinder head caused by its massive cam-box

constituted an insurmountable cooling problem. Alan remembered that designers Hopwoodand Hele were fixated on getting a very high compression ratio despite the engine beingdemonstrably better with a lower one! Everyone agreed that it was the embarrassingly goodperformance of the Roland Pike inspired (and much simpler!)

250 cc version of the Gold Star which finally killed the project.

3. The last word on the colour of production machines for a new season sometimes fell to JamesLeek’s elegant secretary, Miss Gwen Arey. On one occasion three directors were unable to decidebetween the sample motorcycles in various paint schemes prepared for their perusal, althoughthey all hated the drab brown one. Miss Arey was duly summoned to adjudicate, and promptlyselected the bike which they had all rejected declaring “the maroon-red one is by far the best!”It transpired that all three directors were colour-blind!

4. It wasn’t the Japanese competition which brought down BSA and the British motorcycleindustry. It was a management so appallingly bad that even now it beggars belief!

Obviously, this is but a tiny snippet from two and a half hours of talk to which all presentcontributed richly. The writer would just like to thank the gentlemen concerned for letting himlisten, and apologize that so much is omitted from this account in which any mistakes are those ofthe reporter.

John BullWell what a good John Bull it was. We had 12 of our members make it there and back without asplash of rain. Paul our chairman was on his B31, with the biggest tent and the smallest ccbike; wondering why he was down on power! Such things as power to weight ratio. We all set outfrom the port and within 10 miles we were divided into 4 groups unintentionally; I may add, Allfour groups ended up going different ways; and some sulking was had, at getting lost; butits about the journey to be had not thedestination! Anyway, that’s my excuse and bi-focal glasses.

Alan and Albert were missing Bob this year as hedecided to get married on the same weekend asthe Rally; where were his priorities! Never theless we toasted his good health and best wishes. The return journey was as planned andwe gathered for lunch just outside the port, ascan we seen in the photo of all the jolly chapswaiting for the ferry

From The Forum:Many thanks to all who attended the Wicksteed Park Open Day this year and a special thanksto all the people who helped by manning the booking in desk and selling polo shirts, Daphnefor her dogged determination in selling the raffle tickets, you all did a splendid job and I couldnot have managedwithout you all.

I was a little surprisedby the lack of interestshown in the OpenDay, by some branches, including committee, which was clearlydisplayed by theirabsence but, by thefeedback I receivedfrom those that didattend it was veryencouraging.

NORMAN vANHOUSE 1916-2011The Remembrance Service for Norman Vanhouse took place on the 2nd June at the Robin HoodCrematorium in Shirley, Solihull. The BSA Owners Club was represented by Steve Brown, JohnFarrell, George Chiswell and myself. Also, Wesley Wall who trailered the 1952 BSA Star Twinridden by Norman, to the service. The bike is kept on display at the National MotorcycleMuseum. Members of the Kings Norton M/Cycle Club, which Norman had virtually been alifelong member, accompanied the funeral cortege. The family were very appreciative towardsmembers of the historic motorcycle movement who went along to pay their respects.

Phil Bull (Birmingham Branch)

Norman Vanhouse passed away shortly before his 95th birthday. He spent 35 years of his lifeworking in the motorcycle industry, initially with the Ariel Company at Selly Oak, Birmingham, where for a period of four years he was employed in the experimental and competitionsdepartment. An active competitions rider himself, he was a member of the official factory trialsand scrambles team for seven years, during which he won in such events more than 150 awardsincluding ISDT gold medals.

After a brief period with Douglas, of Bristol, which followed his days with Ariel, he joined thestaff of BSA in 1952 as a sales representative. He fulfilled this position for the next 16 years, before being given responsibility for BSA and Triumph fleet user sales in the UK market, whichhe undertook until the formation of Norton, Villiers Triumph in 1973.

A keen and enthusiastic motorcyclist from 1933, he completed the entire period of theSecond World War as an army despatch rider, including 9 months with the British ExpeditionaryForce in France, during which time he covered no less than 98,000 miles, the vast majorityoverseas.

However, he will best known for beingone of the three riders which broughtthe Maudes Trophy back to BSA. 1952was a bleak year for Britain in theAustrian based ISDT, but the trio ofindividuals emerged unscathed from thetrial to complete an ambitious observedtest. They were all mounted on BSA A7Star Twins. These had been picked atrandom from a batch of thirty fivemachines in the despatch department atSmall Heath and then sealed by the ACU.Norman, newly arrived at BSA but withworks trials experience at Ariel andDouglas was chosen alongside Fred Rist,ex Army trials champion and BSA worksteam member and a young chap swiftlymaking a name for himself in trials underthe BSA banner, Brian Martin.

For three basic British parallel twins to compete in the ISDT was audacious if not downrightcheeky. However that was not all as the trio had to ride to the ISDT from the factory, and aftercompeting in the ISDT, onto Oslo in Norway a total distance of 4958 observed miles. The testwould conclude with a high speed test culminating in a standing quarter mile sprint.

The factory was not allowed to enter a team as such so the three tendered their entries as

members of the BirminghamMCC. Not one of the teammembers dropped a mark andeach won a gold medal as well asclaiming the team prize. For thisthe BSA factory was awarded theprestigious Maudes Trophy.

The A7 Star Twin used by him,MOL 303, is currently in theNational Motorcycle Museumcollection and has recently beenrestored after being badlydamaged in the Museum fire. Thiswas taken to the Crematorium.

FIvE M20’s STEAL THE SHOW AT THEBLOEMENCORSO.

Bloomin Corso you may ask? This is an annual flower parade in Holland consistingof 20 enormous floats and 30 cars decorated with flowers, they drive along a40km route from Noordwijk to Haarlem.

The parade started on Aprilthe 16th at 09.30 in themorning and ended at 21.00in the evening, a long dayand slow going at 2 miles in 3hours, not good for an air-cooled M20 About a millionvisitors watched the Corsocoming from as far away asRussia, Japan and Korea. In the procession there were5 M20’s ridden by DutchBSA Club members, AadOtte, Benedict Lefeber, Jan

Papendrecht, Frans Hendriks and Martijn Hendriks, the float was a Dakotaairplane made from wire and steel, the “real flower” decorations were hyacinthsfor the purple and white with daffodils for the yellow and tulips for the red.The M20’s were a part of the theme relating to a 1977 Dutch film “Soldaat vanOranje” (Soldiers of Orange) the film is set during the German occupation of theNetherlands during World War II about a group of Dutch students, in one of thefilm scenes there is a student dressed up in a dinner suit riding a BSA M20 outfit,as you can see in the picture Aad Otte is dressed for the occasion, music from thesound track of the film was played throughout the procession, just wish that I hadbeen there. You can do a Google on this to find out more and even purchase the film if youwish. I would like to thank Aad Otte and Marca Bultink for providing thephotograph and information.

GERMANY, ETHANOL FUEL.I received a telephone call from Christiane Jagau, one of the main organisers ofthe German International Rally. She is deeply concerned regarding the use of fuelthat contains 10% ethanol, apparently the majority of German drivers are refusingto buy this as it returns poor fuel economy, Greenpeace state that ethanol canruin cars and the environment.

A lead to leadedWhen leaded petrol was being replaced, there were many articles in various publications, including THE STAR,giving advice on what owners of classic machines should do. At the time, my BSAs were resting, and I took littlenotice. When I needed my Thunderbolt again, I found leaded petrol outlets nearby, so I allowed myself toforget anything I might have learned about living without leaded petrol. Now, calamity, the last of those outletshas closed, and my bikes are grounded. Is there a handy guide as to what needs to be done? Obviously, Icould spend megabucks having my machines converted to run on unleaded, but given that I only fill up twicea year, is there any other solution? Can I get a leaded petrol additive? If so, will I need any changes to thecarburation?

Yours desperately, Frans Vas Nunes (Brentwood, Essex)

FUEL NEWS from FBHvC

Biofuel additives

At the end of April the Federation contacted seven suppliers of biofuel corrosion inhibitor additives invitingthem to take part in the FBHVC test programme. Those products that pass the test may then carry the FBHVClogo on the packaging. This endorsement will be similar to that given to the lead replacement additives thatprotect against valve seat recession and the products submitted will either be given a ‘pass’ or a ‘fail’; we willnot grade them for effectiveness. The biofuel test regime is different to the programme used for the leadreplacement additives in that it is purely a laboratory test for corrosion. The fuel has to be aged for 13 weekswhile tests are conducted on each sample every two weeks and compared with a base fuel.

We still carry details on our site, at www.fbhvc.co.uk, of the lead replacement additives; look out in duecourse for the additional details of the biofuel additives, which will be shown after we have the latest test resultsin a few months time.

The Federation has been contacted by both Frost and Millers Oils, in addition to Tetraboost who wementioned in the last issue of the newsletter, giving information about the launch of their additives. Thesecompanies have all been invited to submit their corrosion inhibitor products for testing. It should be notedthat no endorsements for any products have been granted yet. Please remember that corrosion inhibitorsshould overcome many of the problems associated with the inclusion of ethanol in petrol but will not addressmaterial compatibility issues.

Christiane states that we should buy SUPER PLUS fuel which is 98 octane with noethanol or E5 with 5% but try to avoid E10 with 10% ethanol, the Germangovernment have halted the countrywide installation of E10 pumps until they canprovide evidence that is good for E10, not so lucky in the USA where in somestates you have no choice but to buy E10 as there is no alternative.Peter Twyman

May Last Sunday Ride Meeting as usual at the Super Sausage, for the ride to be led by Trevor there were

six of us ready, after our customary breakfast, Trevor, Kelvin and myself on A65’s withDave, Chris and Nick on a variety of other makes.

We had a pleasant ride along many minor roads off towards the Chilterns arrivingat Pitstone. On a sharp junction with a cambered incline with an almost hairpin bendKelvin managed to dismount butdeserved a round of applause forcatching it. Re-grouping we went afurther half mile, took a right up ontothe downs. Stopping at a layby wehad a great view of the ‘WhipsnadeLion’ cut into the chalk. Four of us hadparked but with no sign of Chris orNick, Trevor went back to look forthem.

Chris had problems with thewiring to the ignition switch on hisHinckley Triumph but appeared tohave fixed it and held it all togetherwith a cable tie. On preparing to setoff Chris’ bike cut out again and he decided to await the recovery man with a van.

Then there were ‘5’!! On thereturn journey along some moregreat lanes all went well until we gotstuck at some roadwork traffic lightsafter which my Thunderbolt decidedto cut out in the middle of the road. After a few kicks it restarted and allwas fine until we reached Winslow.Pausing at the side of the road asDave & Nick had dropped back, aswe went off the Thunderbolt cut outagain. On restarting only myself andNick were left – and no sign of theothers. A few months earlier we hadfinished at the same pub and we took

a right on leaving Winslow. The moral here is not to second guess as it should have beenobvious that the others must have gone straight on or would have been waiting at thejunction.

After Nick and I rode up this road, then back and up the one the others had takenbut by now there was no sign of them. We then had to try and work out where the‘Shoulder of Mutton’ was, even though we had passed it on leaving Stoney Stratford atthe very beginning of the ride (must pay more attention!).

Eventually we hit familiar roads to reach the pub and to find the others alreadyoutside enjoying a drink. Another good ride down some great lanes and scenery, thanksto Trevor for organising and leading.

I would like to invite your members to a small vintage motorbike rally in Warburton on the 8thSeptember. I see from your calendar that you are planning to be in Warrington from the 9th, andwondered whether you would like to come to Warburton the day before. I work for a NationalHeritage charity, caring for historic churches no longer required for worship. It would be lovely if yourmembers could attend- we are in a beautiful location and our events are very well attended. the eventwould be the main activity for Heritage Open Days.

All best regards, Helen Swift

A few of the East London crew went to the recent bike show at Stafford. An earlystart with a comfort break close to our final destination saw us ready for a long daymooching around the showground. I m not sure that we got to see everything there butit did leave you pretty exhausted by the end of the day. I managed to get a few bits andpieces sorted but it was apparent that brit bike spares were a bit thin on the ground .Imust say it did look like you could get a stonking deal on a Japanese machine. Youdefinitely get plenty of bike for your money.

We have had a couple of B B Q s recently on club nights making good use of thelong nights and fine weather. Big Dave Evens our permanently pink shirted runsorganizer is giving our boys plenty of options to ride out every weekend and evenmidweek for those who now have that spare time available.

The Enfield pageant was the next big show but in recent times the classic car andbike auto jumble has become more of a family orientated fun day and exhibit weekendand whilst there in absolutely nothing wrong with that it does kind of confirm the feelingthat rummaging around boxes of old bike parts will become a rare activity in the future, but that’s a talking point for another day

Not a great deal to report for the last couple of months. We had a run in April, which was organized by Malcom (H) eight members attending. This month it was Dave’sbirthday run better supported with 13 attending including Rob from South Derbyshire.Far too much food was served. Plenty of chips and sandwiches but no birthday cake. One of our new members – young Paul – who we mentioned in our January notes hasbeen taken under the wing of Ron. They are working on the bike to get it mechanicallyrunning. Then Paul will be able to get it MOTed and registered with the DVLA.

Martin and Joey are getting excited now as Cliff, our National Treasurer, has justcompleted their A65 engine rebuild and will be offering it back into the outfit. The bikehas been laid up for a couple of years or so while Martin searched to find help (someof which was not good). Cliff has now succeeded where others failed. (This is what Clubmembers do for others).

A few of our members will be attending the Field Day and Rally at Wicksteed Parkand are looking forward to a relaxing time.

An early reminder that our camp is in August and we are hoping for some decentweather this time. Hope to see you there.

East Sussex Branch Meeting 20/04/2011Branch Open DayA discussion was held concerning the date for open day 2011 by the 22 members

present. Last year our open day was supported by the Sussex British MotorcycleOwners Club who changed the date of their own event to attend. The same clash ofdates has occurred again. After some discussion it was decided by the majority ofmembers that we would hold open day on our normal date (1st Sunday in September)this year that is September 4th. An earlier date would mean that open day would fall inthe summer holiday period and possibly clash with other events, to hold open day laterwould mean at least 2 weeks later (Ace Day is 11th) and we are then getting toward theend of September with possibly not such good weather. The Sussex Bike Club have sentan invitation to attend their 25th anniversary open day on 14th May at their HQClimping Village Hall near Littlehampton.

A provisional list of volunteers was taken, but a meeting will be held nearer to openday to finalise plans for open day. Tim has kindly offered the use of his marquee but itmay need to be erected the day before and taken down afterwards. A suggestion wasmade that the Tombola might be re introduced and that the raffle might have fewerprizes with some being used for the Tombola. Also it would add interest to open day ifsome different stalls were present, so any ideas??? Whilst thinking of ideas we need toadvertise open day. I can produce some flyers, but we need members to place these toattract visitors and bikes.

our way, the local engraver is now my best friend. Most applications do come fromonline these days but shows and events we support help, too.

The second Sunday meeting in May was attended by thirteen members, one upon the usual dozen or so who usually ride in. John Farrell was the extra visitor, paying hisannual visit to The Blue Bell riding a non-standard Shooting Star, which was last seen atthe NEC Classic Show in November. A much oversquare engine and twin carb headamongst other mods, certainly makes the bike a conversation piece. We’ll find out moreabout the other mods next year. The last Monday evening meeting in May was a BankHoliday as usual, but those in attendance were treated to Colin Perry riding in on hisB31 Plunger, having lain in a loft for many years and recently getting put back together. No not Colin, you fool. The bike!! Well done, mate. We’ll soon knock the shine off that.

Midweek evening excursions have included The Black Buoy, Knowle on the firstTuesday evening of the month, Becketts Farm, Wythall every second Tuesday and TheMoat House Inn, Alcester on the last Thursday evening monthly. These will carry onthroughout the summer until September when winter returns. Also, those who are able, ride out to Hoare Park on Wednesdays for the weekly informal classic bike meeting.Unfortunately on one of our recent visits there, one of our colleagues riding a Triumphengined B25, lost a tappet cover from the cylinder head. This particular component, obviously not wanting to be associated with a BSA frame, decided to make a bid forfreedom not realising as most inanimate objects would be unable to do, that the rest ofits life would be spent in a ditch.

The Birmingham Branch will be taking stand space at this year’s Founders Day onthe 24th July. Members visiting the show are very welcome to leave their bikes andequipment on the stand while they wander round the show. In fact, it’s important thatthey do, as these machines will be the display. Classic bikes preferably, but notnecessarily BSAs.

Take carePhil

I counted them out and I counted them back! Yes another John Bull rally is overand the Cleveland lot got there and back in one piece. Seven members travelledtogether 3 A65s, 2 A10s, 1 M33 and a reliant engined A10, plus George on a triumph,John Butterworth, another Cleveland member travelled independently on his W.D.M20.Another enjoyable rally with nice weather, we ambled through Belgium led by Steve onA and B roads stopping at Diksmuide for a leisurely lunch and then onto the rally sitewhich was used three years ago I think? The run out on Saturday was to Tyne Cotmilitary cemetery as we had all visited this place before we decided to do our ownthing, four of us going to Adinkerke (cheap baccy) the others heading for Ypres. On theSunday, we packed up and made our way back to Zeebrugge via the town of Dammefor lunch. Thanks go to the Belgian organisers for another enjoyable rally, see you all inZondhoven next year.

Club runs have included a May day run out led by Tony and an evening run toBarnard Castle led by Brian on his A10.I along with John B attended the West Yorks camp(both of us on W.D.M20s). This was a back to basics camp held at a derelict farm ownedby a friend of Tim’s. Camping was free beer a pound a can with a marquee to cook andsocialise in entertainment was provided by a young lad who could play like Jimi Hendrix, another excellent, cheap weekend away thanks to the West Yorks lads and Tim’s friend.

By the time you read this you will be looking forward to camping in some far offplace with wonderful scenery and lovely weather, NO, not the Rhine valley in Germany,Ugthorpe lodge in North Yorks. Yes another reminder of our camping weekend, 1-3rdof July, see page 29 for details. As this is two weeks before the International its ideal forthat test run, ensuring your bike is in good fettle for Germany, you will also have enoughtime to fix it before you go!

See you all at Ugthorpe or Germany.Beezajohn.

but also with a lot of new “friends” from other clubs. I had run out of my 24 cups andsaucers by midday and it was Jill and Angie to the rescue washing up in a cake tin.Everything worked like clockwork, we got the best club stand plaque and then it wastime to pack it all away again and John Marsh and I took the proper route home to getthere by 5 O’clock. A good day had by all. I did come under a lot of pressure from theKent Branch of the Triumph (did I really write that) owners club to take the jukebox to ashow they are putting on in aid of the Kent Air Ambulance. They are re-creatingJohnsons Cafe in Higham Memorial Hall and couldn’t believe their luck when they cameacross a bike club with the one essential item they were missing. I think I will have to doit but for a donation to our club funds. What do you think?

On behalf of all club members I would like to extend a warm welcome to BernardRodemark from Hailsham and hope to see you at club nights.

Ride SafeJohn and Jill

Andrew and I met up at 0630 at Duxford and on route, near Dartford; we met upwith Calvin, who lives in Essex to ride down to Dover for the ferry trip to Calais. Fromthere, 60 miles further on into Belgium for the John Bull Rally. The farm campsite wasabout 8 miles from Ypres (Ieper) where several of us travelled to on the Friday afternoonprimarily to see the Mein Gate memorial and hear the Last Post played by four buglers. This takes place at 20.00 every day of the year and attracts a large gathering of all ages.It is a truly moving experience.

The memorial bears the names, arranged by regiment and rank, of more than54000 men of the British Army who lost their lives in the Ypres Salient up to August1917, who have no known grave. Some of these men lie in the many cemeteries nearby,as unknown soldiers: most simply disappeared. On Saturday, our Belgian hostsorganised a three-hour tour around the Flanders region where we passedmany memorials, cemeteries and battlefield views. It included a visit to the Tyne Cotcemetery, which is the largest British military cemetery in the world. A very interestingweekend and well worth the visit.

On May 8th a dozen of us, who had not been put off by the forecast forrather inclement weather, met up at 0900 for the pilgrimage to Armoury Road and theNational Motorcycle Museum. Fortunately, the sun shone for whole of the day exceptfor short sharp shower during the morning, which remarkably coincided with our stopfor coffee, eggs and bacon at a roadside café. It was at that point that Jim K, who hadthought that the time of departure was 0930, caught up with us. Brunch over, when wereturned to our machines they were dry as indeed so were roads and we resumed ourjourney arriving at the “hallowed ground” just after mid-day, although, unfortunatelywithout Jim K who had broken down with an electrical problem less than a mile from ourdestination. Thinking that discretion was the better part of valour, he returned homeonce he had sorted out the problem. I for one was surprised to see that a large sectionof the factory, although somewhat dilapidated, still remained. Several photographs weretaken to record the event and to enable us to obtain a certificate from the club.

The remainder of us, except Andrew L, spent a splendid afternoon at the NMM.It is described as a place where an older generation can once again view with nostalgiathe machines they rode in days gone by, when British motorcycles ‘ruled the world’. Howtrue, an incredible display and well worth the visit.

We were very pleased to see a party of members of the Nene & Welland branchwho had a ride over to see us on one of our club nights. We have spoken about a visitto one of their club nights on several occasions so I suppose we have no excuses now.See you later in the year folks.

Looking forward also to meeting old friends (and some, not so old) at the annualfield day at Wicksteed Park in June.

All the best. Chris

VERY IMPORTANT DATEOn club night 1st June your attendance at White Hart is requested for a BBQ and

Disco to kick off the summer season. Music will be provided by myself and Jill, BBQ byTim. Only cost to members will be your food from the BBQ. With members support thiscould be a good night so come along and enjoy!!!

Triumph Owners Club Medway Branch are holding a show at Higham MemorialHall, School Lane, Higham, Kent, ME3 7JL. Free entry from 10am. Sunday 5th June. (Thisis the event Tony is taking the jukebox to – see Tony’s report on Ashford further downthe page)

The meeting ended with a raffle which raised £27.00 for club funds, many thanksto all those donating prizes.

The new club stand is nearing completion and is really looking good thanks to allthose who have worked hard on this project. On Saturday 9th April a group of us weretaking a tea break in the sunshine at Tony’s when a Hawker Hurricane flew over. Tonymade the comment “I actually ordered the Avro Vulcan but I suppose the Hurricane wasall they could afford”. The Merlin engine did sound nice almost as good as a Gold Starpulling away up hill.

Newhaven FortThe Sussex British Motorcycle

Club held a classic bike show and rallyat Newhaven Fort on Sunday April10th. It was a perfect warm spring daywith unbroken sunshine and proved tobe an excellent ride both ways. Therewas a very good turnout by club bikes,Martin, Colin, Alan, Phil, Lana, Steve,Angie, Geoff & Tony Scrace. Alsopresent (but leaving modern bikesoutside) were Tony, Jill and myself.(Apologies if I missed anyone). Therewere lots of bikes on display in the Fortwhich provided the perfect setting onsuch a warm sunny day. As well as the bikes, the Fort echoed to the sounds of Bugle callsduring a demonstration in the morning. The afternoon featured a Rock and Roll dancewith some excellent music. Altogether a really good day out.

Ashford Classic Bike ShowEaster Monday saw another brilliant day of warm sunshine to mark the first outing

for the new club stand. The day started at around 8am with Steve and Angie, Tony,Martin, Russell, John Marsh, Chris Chapman, myself and Jill trying to work out how to fitthe club stand into the space allocated at Ashford. The Gazebo was erected thenmanhandled around to find the best fit. It was quite a stressful time as we were alreadybehind schedule and credit to everyone present that there were no “Tantrums”. Oncethe location was decided the stand was soon erected, the Jukebox switched on and thefirst coffee served. Somehow I got the honour of sampling that first coffee, excellent jobTony!!! The day passed very pleasantly with lots of interest in the cafe and people sittingin the auction stand alongside to listen to the music whilst eating their lunch. As youprobably know by now, the club won first prize for the best club stand. Congratulationsto Tony and all those who helped to make the stand a success. Also present with bikeswere Chris and Roy. Many thanks to the crew of “roadies” who helped erect anddismantle the stand.

Tony’s Report on AshfordAshford review. The day dawned bright (brighter than me it seemed) at 5:45. John

Marsh arrived at 6:30 and after a check of the transport we set off for Ashford. Oh yes?Not quite!! I got us to Maidstone before I turned on the Sat Nav to find I was 30 milesaway from all the people waiting to build the stand. S—t! I managed to get a messageto John to explain my faux pas and lit off down the M20 at an astounding rate and arrivedat Ashford at 8:45. The stand was done, dusted and producing coffee and cakes tomusic by half ten. The cafe was turning out to be popular with not only our own people

Technology even back then.Yes, well, our July meetings are, Tuesday 5th and Thursday 21st TTFNColin.

Hi all, good meeting this month witharound 14 members turning up, someeven came on bikes!! Five in total, thenight went well with much input andchinwag from us all. The conversation waswide spread and varied but mainly ourbikes were foremost. Lindsay reportedhow much he had enjoyed the Hailwoodmemorial run, Don’s two wheeledcollection is going well and those thatneeded to be tested have passed theM.O.T. test yet again. We are trying to geta club run arranged and Lindsay is lookinginto one or two likely venues. So muchnattering going on it’s difficult to sift out the salient points but as usual, the night went toquickly. I followed Don home just to add a little extra lighting to his B29 that had only

cycle lights on, not that he needed it butbetter safe the sorry. I went to the Trammuseum at Crich near Matlock with mymates from the Vellocette club on Sunday22nd, it was a good run except for the last20 mins when the heavens opened with avengeance but we got there safe if morethan a little damp. Because we were onold bikes we had free entry and parkedup on the main road with the trams, Mr. JPublic was more than blessed with anarray of bikes from all ages and conditions. After a few hours looking at the bikes, riding on the trams and been dried out bythe sun we needed to make our way back.

The route back was dry and sunny though very blustery. We followed Brian’s leadthrough the Derbyshire countryside and into Staffordshire, after105 miles round trip wearrived home in time for tea, what better way to spend a day.

Enjoy ‘em T.T.F.N. Dave.

HEADLINE “ SHOCK DEFEAT “ Cheshire Loses cheese to Yorkshire. I’m referringof course to the famous South Cheshire branch camp. More of this anon.

Now the show season is well underway up here (or down / across) events arecoming thick and fast. May day bank holiday and that means Gawsworth Hall classicvehicle show. This event is now a firm annual fixture on our calendar. Unlike some showsI could mention entry on classic motorbikes is free and sometimes I think participantsout number spectators! A really good event.

The following weekend saw another firm fixture - the branch camp. After weeks ofdrought the weather changed to variable for our event but stayed dry for the importantbits i.e. putting up and taking down the tents and the Saturday ride out - this year a semitreasure hunt style, superbly organised by Andrew Guttmann. The traditional Fridaynight pub quiz was again won by the biking campers (against locals and regular campers)but when you checked the size of the winning team, it was no surprise. Half way throughthe evening the wind had “ got up “ - enough to lift the branch gazebo up and nearlyonto the pavilion roof. Luckily, there’s a 7 foot hedge in the way so it caught the flyingtent before it did a complete “ Mary Poppins ‘. After some frantic strapping down withDom’s racket straps it stayed put for the weekend.

Sitting typing these notes on the last Bank Holiday until late August. A cool dampone so weather seems to have reverted to type after that warm spell early on in the year. And this July issue of your Star arrives as we enter the second half of the year. So hopingthat by now it is more inviting to get out and enjoy the bikes and all. At least the forecastis looking good for Wicksteed next weekend.

The Amberley Show was an interesting day out. As ever it was good to catch upwith some old faces and chat with some new ones. But the highlight for some was at othermembers’ expense. As Gerry and myself relaxed against a rustic fence chatting with thegroup, John Michael strolled over and added his weight to the proceedings. As thethree of us leaned the top rail of the fence gave way and we ended on our backs, in thevegetation behind, stranded with legs in the air . The resulting hilarity took ages to settledown, and it still brings a smile thinking about it now.

The last Kempton Jumble was visited by several of us and was quite fruitful.Unfortunately it clashed with the 1st Waterlooville Motorcycle Club bike Show whichwas apparently quite a good event. Coming up on 2nd July is the Old Fossils Run alsoorganised by the Waterlooville Club. The following week is the Meon Valley Lions Clubrun, starting at 10:30 as it stresses on the flyer from the Rising Sun, Swanmore.

Mid month is of course the Loreley International Rally, ferry and overnightsbooked, machinery fettled, toolkit and spares packed.

Then it is the Hampshire Branch camp the first full weekend in August, Friday 5thto Sunday 7th. All are very welcome naturally, and we seem to be attracting morevisitors from further afield. And with any luck we will be bringing along the completedC15 we have done up over the past couple of years as a group project. Last yearsvisitors may recall that we started stripping the engine at the last camp. And noguarantee for this year but the sun has mostly shone on us in recent years. A mystery runis planned for Saturday, no surprises on the Sunday run, it’s for the ice cream, Roy will bein the chair.

Mike, waiting for the sun

Eleven riders turned out for the may run down to Brede water works museum nrHastings. Meeting up at Charing gliding club cafe for breakfast. Although a damp start,Malc Folwells enjoyable route took us through some picturesque Kent and Sussexcountryside. After a few enjoyable hours touring the museum we set of for Ickleshamvillage for late midday refreshments, the local pub had many choices of real ale andhome made food. Sitting out in the pubs rear garden, we could quite easily havedropped off for forty winks in the glorious sunshine. A good trouble free ride homemade it an enjoyable day. Club night on the 19th May was one of our evening runs. 10riders including two guests, Rob from the A.R.S.E. club and Mark from BSA Essex club.Malc chairman led the run on his RGS using his built in sat nav, how does he rememberall those country lanes?. A lovely warm evening & smooth roads (makes a change) weended up at the Brabourne Arms a pub near Sellindge, this was a new pub for us soMalc decided to christen the pub floor with his first pint. A good evening was enjoyedby all. Club nights still well attended, we are all looking forward to a good summer, saferiding, Terrylin.

Hello from North Staffs,Our AGM on the 3rd May conjured up no big surprises, with the Chairman staying

the same with Tom Shuker and Arthur Langman, Sue Langman doing a sterling job astreasurer kindly stayed on for another term as did myself as Sec.

Our darts competition is still on going with progress to the next round for HazelClarcke, Steve Plumb, Harvey Sweatnam and Andy Lorenz.

29th and a Grrand Day Out at the Capesthorn Hall Classic Bike and Car Show, although the weather looked a bit iffy it remained dry, nice, although the weather inthese days of High Tec should not be a problem with neck to ankle water proof oversuits and tyres that stick to the tarmac in all elements, brings back memories of thoseCrepe Soled shoes, Beetle Crushers or Brothel Creepers as they were affectionatelycalled, you could run for the bus flat out in them dodging obstacles and pedestrians onthe pavements at angles of lean that Mr Rossi would be proud of, yes wonderful

For the first time we welcomed somevisitors from West Yorks branch - theirscribe Ian Clifton and the Spencers. Ian’s1971 lightning and my 1962 A65 star madea good “ first and last of the models.

Saturday evening - superb nosh fromlandlord Joe and team, then awards. Thisyear again it was “long distance Ray Cook”,best bike Paul Stafford’s B40 with newpannier frames and rucksacks and hard luckto Joyce for spending an hour polishingMike’s “Billy Black“ and still not winning thebest bike. The ride out tie break was a totalvictory for the West Yorks branch with Ian

Clifton getting closest to the cheese question answer and the Spencer team comingsecond. Their prizes were, as you would expect, Cheshire cheese.

The band followed the raffle prizes, again up to their usual high standard, withmuch dancing followed, again as usual, with the famous “South Cheshire bacon butties“.Even the landlord comes for a regular feast. Short of space now - pics on the website.

Finally - old bikes don’t leak oil, they just mark their territory. Regards Bill.

Greetings once again from warm and sunny South DerbyshireAs forecast, the month turned out to have excellent riding weather and we have

had some enjoyable runs, the first being to the strangely named “Dead Poets” publichouse at Holbrook near Belper. Situated on the ridge between the A6 and A61, thepanorama is inspiring, giving good vistas over both valleys; this together with good beerand a friendly welcome (plus a smallish but safe off road car park) made for a good run.The second was to look at the new home of the Rudge Club – the previous ‘pub’ having

closed for sale – at Draycott in the Clay. The organised run was small, as severalmembers made their own way direct, andso a little faster than usual. The final run ofthe month was ably led by Andy – this oneto a ‘new to us’ pub called The Bell atSmalley Derbyshire – over Ilkeston way.Now I don’t want you to think that all wedo is to ride to pubs and drink – nosireeee – it’s just that a ride out on aWednesday night and a decent beer atthe end makes for enjoyment. A verywarm welcome from the Landlord and

staff AND a superb buffet of Sausages, home cut chips with the ubiquitous Bread andbutter – just right for Butties!!!

Early in the month, a six branch members had a mini weekend at a campsite atGoathland in Yorkshire – travelling some146 miles along less busy roads to peaceand tranquillity of ‘Heartbeat’ country forthose who are familiar with the TV show.Sadly, Giles’ usually trusty A65 developeda misfire on one pot and had to be‘Recovered’ home at the end of theweekend as did Mike’s Goldenflash whichmanaged to lose all of it’s oil (?) –a gratefulthank you the AA and Footman Jamesrecovery!

various machines, most being A10’s of different years, over the day enjoying cups of teaand cakes joining other Clubs. The day had not been forecast with good weather butthe rain held off long enough.

Finally the Branch put on a BSAOC stand / Marquee at the Classic Bike Clubs Showat Stanford Hall, nr Lutterworth, Leicestershire on the29th. The rain this year thankfully held off until lateafternoon and was not particularly heavy – unlikeprevious years ! A lot of interest was shown in the 16displayed bikes by those attending the show and as aclub, we provided a constant flow of Tea and coffeefor members both National and local throughout theday, the early morning Bacon Butties having beenconsumed by the eager ‘gannets’ who set up the stand. With entries ranging from early M20 rigids throughPre-unit 10’s and on to A75 Rocket 3’s and Unit A65’s(not to overlook a mid 60’s D7 Bantam), all tastes werecatered for. Steve Blant won the ‘Best on Stand’ with his1953 Plunger A10 – a nicely put together machine. Allin all, a very successful show to finish off the month.

June is going to be a busy month as well with“Tidy Bike Night”, Chip-Shop runs, and a few wateringholes to be visited! Looking forward to it all.

So, until next time “Chrome up, Rubber down” – safe ridingRoosterman

In addition to our two well attended club nights, our main activity in May centredaround a ride out to Popham airfield where some 10 BSAs braved the chilly weather toattend an excellent rally of heavy duty classic trucks, cars and motorcycles. Cliff did hisbest to maintain April’s focus on food by supplementing his meat pie with a visit to theChinese takeaway for spring rolls. In addition a few used their modern bikes toundertake a “Harry Patch pilgrimage ride” (the Last Tommy, who died in 2009 aged 111)to Coombe Down, Bath, where he was born.

After returning from my holiday it was straight off to Amberley for the first of theirmotorcycle shows of the year and the weather, although wet first thing, was kind to us.Tony’s A65 Lighting Clubman was out again after its’ debut at Newhaven Fort but as yetnot quite right for riding. After borrowing a trailer Tony has now bought his own so aftertaking a considerable ribbing over the length of time he spent restoring the A65 he willnow be ribbed about when he will be riding!

Amberley proved to be the debut for an other member’s bike a Dave broughtalong his newly completed cafe racer A10 described by him as his eBay bike. It is animpressive machine and whilst Dave and Trevor have worked together in its’preparation there are many examples of Trevor’s engineering skills to be seen.

Steve put on his ‘Rockers” night at the Royal Oak in Rusper and again the weatherproved to be on our side and an important factor in making this open air event a success. The other factors........beer, barbecue and bikes. The car park was once again full ofinteresting machines, Steve doesn’t let any modern machines into the car park, and therewas plenty to see and talk about.

We managed our first evening run with a ‘Fish and Chip’ run down to Oscar’s inLittlehampton and the first outing for Mark’s B31. Rigid with teles on the front Mark’smachine is immaculately prepared and sounded as sweet as you might expect from thepopular BSA single. Whilst we were welcomed with open arms at Oscar’s and couldhave sat inside we decided on the sea wall for our dining experience together with afew of the local seagulls.

Kempton Park’s show and autojumble proved another chance to find that illusivepart, see what prices some classics are commanding and see a wide variety of

May proved to be a busy month.. Many camps were attended by our branch withthe John Bull, Birmingham, South Cheshire and of course our camp on the 20th. All thecamps proved to be great fun for all who attended even though in some cases the great‘Rain God’ tried his best to dampen the events!! Highlights for me were my first trip toBelgium and winning some cheese at the South Cheshire camp along with Bob and Anitafor successfully completing their mystery ride out.. During our branch camp we had aride out to a local Aerodrome/Air Museum on the Saturday, but alas the Museum wasout of bounds due to the fact that they couldn’t afford to renew their Public LiabilityInsurance!!! We were though, treated to a young Lady being given a wing ride on a Bi-Plane which made up for the disappointment, plus I found out that the general publiccould purchase 100 octane Avgas, so I stuck some in the A65’s tank, but unfortunatelydue to the fact that I had filled her up before the ride out, I could only squeeze 3 litresin ( at £1.89 a Litre by the way). That night we had a talented young singer, Adam Dixonperform for us with some fantastic songs that proved to get many up dancing and airguitaring. Many thanks go to Tim, Pete, Graeme, Bob, Richard and all others who helpedand attended making our Camp afabulous weekend. The last event of Maywas a local Classic Bike show in Rotherhamwhich again was attended by many fromour Branch. Finally some project news…Tim’s ‘Lilac Lil’ is no more, as he re-paintedher in a very nice metallic blue, John’s A65now is running better with Boyer installed,Alan’s A65 is now on the road (by the wayAlan, Kath says, please remember to putthe lid down), Rogers A65 is being treatedto an engine re-build and my R3 is nearingcompletion at last!! Well TTFN and ridesafely. Ian aka Frank

Regards, Ian Clifton

Good news our Tuesday evening runs are well on their way and being we;supported by our members. We have been very lucky, none have had to be cancelleddue to rain, as was the case this time last year. Long may it continue. Tony Boaton and Iorganise the runs each year. We’re blest with many miles of quiet country roads andnarrow lanes, which are will suited for the smaller BSAs. Tony being the leader on hisC15SS, sets a nice steady pace around 45 -50 mph. That is about the miles we tend todo before heading back to HQ the Blount Arms.

May 24th John and his wife Jan put on an excellent BBQ at their home in Clee StMargaret, with a marquee set up at the top of their lovely terraced garden. A good timewas had by all. Brian Allan, a long time motorcyclist, has to sell off his Super Rocket dueto poor health, so sad really. Keith Mills sold off his BSAs in exchange for a couple ofmodern Triumphs. Bets are being taken on how long before they are exchanged! My67 Spitfire petrol tank has been affected by crap petrol, so I’ve had to treat it to a sealant, and now the b****y tap is leaking.

Keep smilingDave Clarke.
