Foreword
This Part of BS 1369 has been prepared under the direction of the Iron and SteelStandards Committee and is a revision of BS 1369:1947, which is withdrawn.
This revision updates and metricates the previous edition to reflect changes in themanufacturing processes and material selection. The major change is thatexpanded metal lathing is now produced only from zinc coated or stainless steelsheet or strip.
BS 1369-2, which is in preparation, will specify requirements for lathingproduced from wire mesh, which was not included in BS 1369:1947.
For corrosive environments it is recommended that a stainless steel lath shouldbe selected.
A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of acontract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.
Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunityfrom legal obligations.
Summary of pages
This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii,pages 1 and 2, an inside back cover and a back cover.
This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have hadamendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table onthe inside front cover.

1 Scope
This Part of BS 1369 specifies steel type,
designation, dimensions and tolerances for steellathing for internal plastering and externalrendering.
NOTE The titles of the publications referred to in this standardare listed on the inside back cover.
2 Material
2.1 Zinc coated steel
Zinc coated lath shall be manufactured from zinccoated steel complying with BS 2989 with a coatingrequirement of at least grade G275 for internalplastering and at least grade G450 for external
rendering. The steel shall be selected from theforming grades Z1 to Z5.
2.2 Stainless steel
Stainless steel lath shall be manufactured fromaustenitic stainless steel that has a corrosionresistance at least equal to that ofBS 1449-2: grade 304S15.
NOTE Stainless steel lath is suitable for both internal andexternal applications.
3 Design
The designation and types of lath shall be as given
in Table 1 and Table 2.NOTE When ordering to this Part of BS 1369, the purchasershould state the specified reference number of the lathingrequired, e.g. BS 1369-1:1987 SRL 2.
4 Dimensions and tolerances
4.1 Sheet size and form
Sheet size shall be specified with the length firstfollowed by the width and the nominal size shallbe 2 500 mm 700 mm. The minimum height ofribs shall be 7 mm in ribbed lath and 5 mm incorrugated lath. Ribbed lath shall be formed with arib on each longitudinal edge and with ribs spacedat maximum intervals of 110 mm.
4.2 Material thickness
The minimum material thickness for both zinccoated and stainless steel lath shall be 0.3 mm.
4.3 Aperture size
4.3.1 Expanded metal lath. The aperture, whenmeasured as illustrated in Figure 1, shall be aminimum of 14 mm in the long way of mesh (LWM)direction and a minimum of 5 mm in the short wayof mesh (SWM) direction.

4.3.2 Ribbed lath. The aperture, when measured asillustrated in Figure 2, shall be a minimum of 9 mmin the LWM direction and a minimum of 5 mm inthe SWM direction.
NOTE The dimensions are for clear aperture and not centre tocentre of the strands.
4.4 Mass and tolerance on mass
The mass per square metre of each lath shall be asgiven in Table 1, subject to a tolerance of 15 %.
4.5 Tolerance on sheet width for expanded andcorrugated lath
A tolerance on sheet width of 5 mm shall apply.
4.6 Tolerance on sheet width and centre of ribto centre of rib dimensions for ribbed lath
A tolerance on sheet width of mm shall apply.
A tolerance on centre to centre of rib dimensionsof shall apply.
5 Marking
For each consignment of lath the manufacturershall attach securely an identification label bearingthe following information:
a) the manufacturers name or trade mark;b) the number and date of this British Standard.i.e. BS 1369-1:19871);
c) either the specified reference number or anumber that can be related to the specifiedreference number;
d) the order number.

1) Marking BS 1369-1:1987 on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturers declaration of conformity, i.e. a claim by or
on behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is therefore
solely the responsibility of the person making the claim. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third party certification of
conformity, which may also be desirable.
