1.1 Develop a vision

The vision for Wildcat Weeks is to educate the whole child, and help them become lifelong learners. It is essential each and every child enjoy learning and is provided with learning experiences that both challenge and engage. The vision for Wildcat Weeks will be accomplished through hands on experiences and an education that is driven by curiosity. This vision parallels the Sherman Central School District vision.

The vision of Sherman Central School District is to educate every child with innovative, quality programming. To do this, distraction due to discipline issues must be kept at a minimum. This will be accomplished by adhering to the student handbook and recommendations of my principal regarding discipline.

The Board of Education meeting is scheduled for 7/13/2015. All of these documents will be complete by this time.

I will continue to work a full schedule in the summer even though school is out for the summer. The hours spent each day working on these materials will be as follows:

7/07/15 – 8 hrs7/08/15 – 8 hrs7/09/15 – 8 hrs7/10/15 – 8 hrs7/11/15 – Planning time on weekend – 4hrs*Every artifact will be completed and ready to mail in this function by 7/11/15.

The Sherman Central School Handbook and Teacher Handbook will be read through and annotated prior to beginning any discipline. A meeting will be held with the principal and notes will be taken prior to beginning any discipline as well. I will also update this handbook for my overarching project. I will evaluate it to see if it fully covers the Wildcat Weeks summer program or if an additional program needs to be added. I will meet with the principal about changes needed to the handbook.2/01/16 – 4 hours2/02/16 – 2 hours

1.2 Articulate a vision

In order for this program to be successful it must be articulated to the community, staff, and school board in a way that promotes a network of individuals working toward the success of the program. This will be done through presentations to the school board, town board, and community, as well as one on one meetings with staff members.

All constituents at the beginning of the school year sign the Sherman Central School District Student Handbook and Teacher Handbook. Also, the principal holds meetings with each grade level to discuss expectations for discipline.

I will continue to work a full schedule in the summer even though school is out for the summer. The hours spent each day working on these materials will be as follows:7/07/15 – 8 hrs7/08/15 – 8 hrs7/09/15 – 8 hrs7/10/15 – 8 hrs7/11/15 – Planning time on weekend – 4hrs

Since when I begin my internship is after this vision is articulated, I will work to revise the two handbooks and discuss possible changes with my principal in preparation for next year. These documents have not been revised in some time and due to our ever-changing society and educational system there are some needed changes.

In the student handbook, I will update any necessary information that needs to be updated. I will update the visuals included in the handbook and possibly add an additional section for summer school. I will also meet with a committee to discuss the handbook and any necessary changes.7/03/16 – 2 hours7/04/16 – 1 hour

1.3 implement a vision

Wildcat Weeks will also provide students with a safe and nurturing environment, complete with role models and two meals a day during the summer months. Courses offered in the program will be fun, interactive, and have Common Core English Language Arts or Mathematics integrated throughout.

Through my use of the student handbook, teacher handbook and weekly meetings with my principal and superintendent I will insure that the vision of Sherman Central School District is adhered to without disruption.

I will continue to work a full schedule in the summer even though school is out for the summer. The hours spent each day working on these materials will be as follows:

7/07/15 – 8 hrs7/08/15 – 8 hrs7/09/15 – 8 hrs7/10/15 – 8 hrs7/11/15 – Planning time on weekend – 4hrsI will work 8 to 9 hours a day and be available for discipline whenever the need arises.Weekly meetings are set to end at the end of March, however we will decide at that time if we want to continue to meet. Meetings with teachers will be based on the discipline issue and as needed. The handbooks will be annotated demonstrating that I have read and am comfortable with them by the end of the first week of February.02/ 01/16 – 4 hours02/02/16 – 2 hours02/03/16 – 1 hour

2.2 Provide effective instructional program

Each day during the program students will have various learning opportunities. The courses provided will be taught by certified Sherman teachers and integrate Common Core ELA and Mathematics. An example of a course taught is Bringing Books to Life. Our Sherman Music teacher will teach this course. Students will create music using various instruments to accompany classic children's stories.

Through the effective use of collaboration with teachers, and appropriate handling of discipline situations effective instructional programming will be able to be provided.

I will also work on the curriculum being offered in grades 7-12 for ELA and Math specifically. We currently use the modules in these grade levels. I will analyze with the teachers if these are effective and what supplements need to be made.

6.1 Understand the larger context

The Sherman community is a high needs community. The majority of families work in agriculture or blue-collar jobs. Also, many of the families are single parent households. This program will greatly assist those families financially as well as help ward off summer regression.

Sherman Central School District is a Prek – 12 building with one principal. This creates an issue when the principal is entrenched in discipline issues or at an out of district training. Through me assisting with discipline this the principal will be more available when he is in district and there will be support when he is not.

The handbook review will

6.2 Respond to the larger context

The basis for the Wildcat Weeks program is the need of the community based on its high poverty level. Research has shown students living in low income households will regress in math by two months and reading by one over the summer months. This program gets students out of an impoverished situation and into an enriching environment.

Due to there being only one building principal, there is a need to have someone to provide support when he is out of district or otherwise detained. Currently that falls to the guidance counselor. This then takes away time from his normal duties. I will help rectify this by assisting with discipline.

Through me learning to handle discipline in the district there will be additional support in this area should the principal be out of the district. Sherman is a PreK to 12th grade school district with one principal. There are frequently times when the principal has to attend training or other event and a discipline issue arises. This issue is then put on hold until he returns or falls to the guidance counselors to handle it. I will be able to assist in this area during this internship and after it. Also, by me becoming more capable in discipline and able to handle it more and more independently, Mr. Ginestre will be free to be more visible in the school. This will enhance the culture of the school, teacher and administrative relationships, etc.

29 30 31 Notes:

II. Means of EvaluationThe Danielson Rubric will be used to evaluate me by the school principal, along with informal evaluations from the principal and superintendent at our weekly meetings (notes will be taken from each of these meetings). I will attend a discipline conference run by BOCES.

Page 33: Bryna M Booth€¦  · Web viewThe vision for Wildcat Weeks is to educate the whole child, and help them become lifelong learners. It is essential each and every child enjoy learning

III. Evaluation ToolsThe evaluative measure to evaluate each artifact will be the site supervisor’s evaluation of each document, some of this will be informal and notes will be recorded, others will be evaluated using the Danielson rubric.

IV. Summary and ConclusionsIn five years time I hope to be a building principal. This internship will give me real world experience working with students and staff in a way that will benefit both the school and community of Sherman.
