Featuring David Morgan, Professor Emeritus of History
PEARLS OF DALMATIAWith Dubrovnik & the Island of Hvar
October 5-19, 2015
Bryn Mawr Alumnae Association presents
This tour is provided by Odysseys Unlimited,
six-time honoree Travel & Leisure’s World’s Best Tour Operators award.
Day 1: Depart U.S. for Zagreb, Croatia
Day 2: Arrive Zagreb After a connecting flight in Europe, we arrive in Zagreb and transfer to our hotel. Tonight we meet our fellow travelers and learn about the journey ahead as we gather for a briefing and welcome dinner. D
Day 3: Zagreb This morning’s tour of the Croatian capital by coach and on foot reveals a gra-cious city of culture and hospitality. We visit Mirogoj Park Cemetery, known for its arcades and sculpture; then continue through Old Town with a visit to St. Stephen’s Cathedral. After calling on the colorful Dolac open-air market, the remainder of the day is at leisure. Tonight we dine at a local restaurant. B,D
Day 4: Zagreb/Lake Bled, Slovenia/Ljubljana We travel northwest this morning to the town of Bled, whose namesake lake is the stuff of fairytales. Surrounded by the Julian Alps and deep forests, and with a medieval castle perched on its shore, the almost mile-wide lake ranks as a popular tourist destination. We tour the castle then enjoy a boat ride around the placid lake. Late this afternoon we depart for the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana, arriving in time for dinner at our hotel. B,D
Day 5: Ljubljana This morning’s walking tour reveals the charming heart of this friendly, mid-sized European capital with ornate façades, romantic bridges, a historic city center, and abundant park-land. Then the remainder of the day is free for independent exploration, perhaps to visit some of the city’s museums, galleries, or historic houses. B
Day 6: Ljubljana/Postojna/Opatija, Croatia En route to Opatija today, we stop to explore Postojna Cave, the almost 13-mile long karst cave system where an electric train takes us deeper than is possible in any other cave in the world. Then after free time here for lunch on our own, we continue on to Opatija, the seaside resort where Habsburg princes once vacationed. B,D
Tour membership limited to 24 alumnae/i and friends of Bryn Mawr College

I ndependent, democratic Croatia welcomes visitors eager to absorb its remarkable history and culture – and its beautiful and unspoiled Dalmatian coastline. As our
small group travels from historic Zagreb and beautiful Lake Bled to the Habsburg resort of Opatija, the island of Hvar, and beloved Dubrovnik, we see why this cherished region lays such a claim on the hearts of all who visit.
Cover Photo: We enjoy a pleasing mix of guided touring and time on our own in Dubrovnik.
Day 7: Opatija/Istrian Peninsula Today’s tour of the Istrian Peninsula reveals the multicul-tural roots of this alluring spit of land jutting into the Adriatic. At various times a vassal of Venice, the first Austro-Hungarian Empire, Fascist Italy, the Yugoslav Federation, and finally, Croatia, Istra, as it is known, boasts an interesting history, mild Mediterranean climate, lovely scenery, and good wines. Our first stop is in the port of Pula, where we visit the well-preserved remains of a Roman amphitheater (c. 177 ce). Next is Rovinj, a charming old Venetian port where we are free to explore on our own and perhaps enjoy lunch at an outdoor café. After returning to Opatija late this afternoon, we dine together tonight at a local restaurant. B,D
Day 8: Opatija/Plitvice Lakes Today we embark on a full-day excursion to Plitvice Lakes National Park, a string of 16 turquoise-colored lakes connected by a series of waterfalls and cas-cades, surrounded by dense forests, and separated by distinctive travertine deposits. Once known as Devil’s Garden, this intriguing natural land-scape of karst formations and abundant wildlife is a UNESCO World Heritage site. We enjoy a guided tour here, as well as some time to wander on our own. B,L
Day 9: Opatija/Zadar/Trogir We travel south along the scenic Adriatic coast today, stopping first in the seaside town of Zadar, an ancient Croatian capital. After lunch at a local restaurant here, we embark on a tour of the Italian-accented medieval city that once rivaled Venice for maritime suprem-acy. Mid-afternoon we depart for Trogir, whose historic town center is a UNESCO site. B,L,D
A typical farmhouse we’ll see along Croatia’s scenic Adriatic Coast.
Day 10: Trogir/Split/Hvar This morning we travel to Split, the main city of the central Dalmatian Coast and home of 3rd-century Diocletian’s Palace. As we see on our guided tour, the palace, and eventually its ruins, formed the historic heart of picturesque Split. After time for lunch on our own, we board a ferry for the two-hour cruise to Hvar, “queen” of the Dalmatian islands. Upon arrival we travel by coach to lively Hvar town, where we spend the next two nights. We dine tonight at a local restaurant just a short walk from our hotel. B,D
Day 11: Hvar With captivating natural beauty and a strategic Adriatic location, Hvar has pros-pered since antiquity. We discover some of its charms this morning, first with a walking tour of Venetian-tinged Hvar town then with a walking tour of nearby Stari Grad, one of Croatia’s oldest

cities and where we also have time to wander on our own. We return to our hotel for lunch and an afternoon and evening at leisure. B,L
Day 12: Hvar/Dubrovnik We continue our journey south today, leaving Hvar for the main-land then traveling along the scenic Dalmatian coast to popular and beloved Dubrovnik. After reaching our hotel late afternoon, this evening is at leisure for us to get our first look at this medi-eval gem. B,L
Day 13: Dubrovnik Today we discover the city whose ancient walls have withstood both time and tide for hundreds of years. We begin with a walking tour around the city walls, whose origi-nal ramparts and bastions date to the 12th and 13th cen-turies (Dubrovnik itself was founded in the 7th century). Then we continue
through the Old City, paying a visit to the stately Baroque Cathedral (c. 1672). We also see the Treasury, whose gilded shelves and historic relics sit behind locked wooden doors; and the Franciscan monastery with a 14th-century pharmacy. We return to our hotel for an afternoon at leisure or time for independent exploration. B
Day 14: Dubrovnik Today is free to explore on our own. From the medieval Old Town to the contemporary city with its Mediterranean accent, Dubrovnik offers discoveries aplenty.
On Day 8 we visit Plitvice Lakes.

Dear Bryn Mawr Alumnae/i, Family and Friends,
Travel with us to the beautiful, unspoiled Dalmatian coast — an extraordinary realm of walled cities and Roman relics. Traveling in a small group of no more than 24 guests, we’ll savor many unique opportunities to discover the history and culture of this remarkable region.
Our 15-day journey begins in Croatia’s gracious capital, Zagreb, with visits to historic Old Town as well as the colorful Dolac open-air market and St. Stephen’s Cathedral. In Lake Bled, we enjoy a tranquil boat ride, and in Ljubljana we revel in romantic views of archetypal bridges and plentiful meadows. Then we continue to Opatija, “the jewel of the Adriatic,” where Habsburg royalty once vacationed. While here, we enjoy a day touring the Istrian Peninsula. Finally, we visit the beautiful island of Hvar, whose enticing medieval town is situated on one of the most beautiful islands along the Adriatic coast, and Dubrovnik, the world’s largest UNESCO conservation site. We tour the Old Town, and enjoy our farewell dinner with a local family. An optional three-night extension in Dubrovnik allows you to explore the ancient city in more depth, at your own pace.
Space on this exclusive, air-inclusive tour for Bryn Mawr is limited to just 24 guests, and will be accompanied by Professor Emeritus David Morgan. We anticipate that space will fill quickly; your early reservations are encouraged.
Sincerely,
Wendy Greenfield Executive Director, Bryn Mawr Alumnae Association
