History Awaits Discovery atNew Market Battlefield

Located in Virginia’s beautiful and historicShenandoah Valley, the New MarketBattlefield State Historical Park tells the

story of one of the last major southern victoriesin the Civil War’s “Breadbasket of theConfederacy.”

On May 15, 1864, Confederate forcesunder Maj. Gen. John C. Breckinridge defeat-ed a larger Union army under the command ofMaj. Gen. Franz Sigel on the Bushong family’sfarm near the town of New Market.Breckinridge’s army included 257 Cadets fromthe Virginia Military Institute, facing their bap-tism of fire. Never before, or since, has a collegestudent body been called into pitched battle aswere the VMI Cadets, ten of whom were killed.

Established in 1967 and administeredby VMI, the New Market BattlefieldState Historical Park is a National

Historic Landmark comprising nearly300 acres of the core battleground, including the historic Bushong Farm andHall of Valor Museum. The Museum, interprets the Battle of New Market andthe saga of the entire Civil War inVirginia. Many people know that theShenandoah Valley is worldrenowned for its scenic beauty and

history. What they don’t know is thatits low rainfall and deep, rocky soils make this anideal location for growing the highest qualitygrapes used in making our wines. With anannual average rainfall of only 32 inches, enough drought stress is produced on the vinesto produce intense flavors and aromas in thewines.

As a result, wine making has becomean art in Shenandoah County and theNorthern Shenandoah Valley.

Five wineraries now make-up theShenandoah County Wine Trail, and allare open for a wonderful tasting experi-ence. Many offer food and entertain-ment as well.

Winemaking is not new to the county, however. Shenandoah Caverns operatesthe third oldest winery in the state ofVirginia. “The most unique thingabout Shenandoah Vineyards,”says Emma Randell, president ofShenandoah Vineyards inEdinburg, “is that we are the firstwinery in the Shenandoah Valleyestablished way back in 1976, and, thus, are considered pioneers of theindustry. Also, we have a greatlocation, just 1 1/2 mile off I-81.Of course, we make great wines.”

One of the newest vineyards isWolf Gap, one of the new breed ofboutique wineries. It was foundedin 2004 by Willard and DianeElledge. “Wolf Gap wines areunique because we don’t try to

make more wine than we can carefullycraft. Our small, boutique winery pro-vides the right elements -- good grapes, good practices and modern equipment to

produce -- not the most wine, but thebest wine possible,” says Willard, who isknown thoughout the county as WolfgapWillie.

Cave Ridge Vineyard is a family ownedand operated vineyard and winery locat-ed in the foothills near Mount Jackson.

“We produce wines that emphasize the

fruit character of the grape using a mini-malist approach to our winemaking,” saysowner and winemaker Randy Phillips.“Cave Ridge adheres to sustainable farm-ing practices in order to promote ahealthy ecosystem for future genera-tions.”

“The wines at Crooked Run Cellarsare unique due to the unique growing-conditions found in the ShenandoahValley,” says owner Jennifer Adamy.“Our growing sites highlight these condi-tions with temperatures, soil conditions, rainfall, and wind; producing grapes bal-anced in sugars and acidity. The endproduct is a wonderfully balanced winethat requires minimal interference fromthe winemaker. That is our goal atCrooked Run, to craft wine with minimalinterference, more to the standards creat-ed by nature.”
