Purpose: Observe objects in both positive and negative space.

Purpose: Observe the mansion on NYIT's Old Westbury campus: "De Seversky". Pick a perspective and draw what you see. Pay

close attention to what is creating the space that you draw.

The hard lines define the boundaries while the shadows

show depth. By shading exactly how the masses were seen, the

extrapolations feel realistic.

.1Surface Design

Purpose: Use concrete as a medium in a golden section-based design.

Make a fountain with three turns using concrete.

Create an interesting design out of blocks to display different water falls.

Because the model was made of concrete, a foam core mold was necessary. The mold created represented the negative space of the model.

.2Water Works

Location: Brooklyn, NY

Site Constraints: 4,620 s.f.

Purpose: Create a water viewing park for the public through the excavation of a hill side

while displaying water in different ways.

Approach: Use a waterfall to naturally move the water down the slope; circulating with the

inhabitants while creating different experiences and moments to interact with the

water.

.1Flat Space| Deep Space

Purpose: Take a 2D painting and transform it into 3D while maintaining the main focal points

and themes of the painting.

Approach: Strategically layer the themes of the painting in model so each side is a

different and interesting view.

The diagrams each represent a different theme

Keeping the concept of the origami model in mind, I created six layers of a wood frame that each embody a theme of my chosen painting, thus turning a 2d idea into a 3d model.

The Cliff Dwelling .2

Location: New Jersey Palisades

Site Constraints: 1,296 s.f.

Purpose: Create a dwelling for three inhabitants through the excavation of a cliff

while maintaining natural light.

Approach: Staggered floors.

The circulation of the space is displayed well in section. I created a seperate

entrance for the studios so that they would be disconnected from the public part of the house. Also, by creating a

seperate entrance at grade level, this makes carrying materials to the studios

more conveniant.

I wanted to design a space that would not only grasp each of the artist's individual style and needs, but also use personal experience of spending large quantities of time in a studio to make life in the dwelling as simple and convenient as possible.

Purpose: Obtain knowledge of Auto CAD by tracing and studying an existing project.

.1Central Park Gatehouse

Location: Central Park West, NYC

Site Constraints: 9,000 s.f

Purpose: Design a gatehouse that transitions the public from the busy streets of the city

into the serene and natural land of the park.

Approach: Create a void through the center of the structure that welcomes the public

inside.

I wanted to incorporate nature within the structure to symbolize the coming together of the city and Central Park. The concept was to create a

void down the middle of the building. The circulation encompasses the void, making it the

focal point during the transition from city to nature.

The top view expresses the open circulation on the top floor. The

higher the people circulate through the structure, the more

open the plan becomes. Ironically, they are getting further from

nature, yet feeling closer to it.

.2Ecology Observatory

Location: Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY

Site Constraints: 114,165 s.f.

Purpose: Design an office space for three scientists; an astronomer, biologist, and chronologist while keeping their specific

needs in mind while having a gallery space for the public to walk through.

Approach: A long gallery space with extruding offices.

Creative Process | Inspiration Board

The initial idea was to have one long gallery space that would connect all the program

together. I used Zaha Hadid's, "Land Formation One", as an inspiration to develop the design.

To obtain order, I created a grid using two specific views across the lake: The

Le Frak ice skating center and a natural baseball field. One is synthetic

(man made), and the other is natural. The grid would create 90 degree angles along the curve (the program) which represents the synthetic aspect of the project while the water curve follows the natural land.

I translated the three labs based on the personality of the

scientists. I pushed the chronologist towards the

sky, dug the biologist into the earth,

and shoved the hydrologist into the

water.

.1The Fifth Elevation

Location: 482 Broadway- Roosevelt Building

Site Constraints: 11,500 s.f.

Purpose: Design the fifth and sixth floor of an existing office building for a fashion

designer using the existing structure within the building.

Approach: L-shaped circulation to distinguish public and private areas.

Creative Process

Steve Madden Shoes was chosen as the company for the office space since their

first retail store in New York was in SOHO. The circulation is two L-shapes in order to

distinguish private and public space. PrivatePublic

The double height space integrates both floors with one another. It also makes it possible for

both runway shows to be viewed simultaneously. This large space becomes the

employee gathering area for when the space is not occupied by runway shows.

Steve Madden stores throughout New York City have an industrial look. Their shoes are

also described as young, trendy, and fun. That idea was carried out when choosing

materials for the interior.

Location: Montblanc, France

Architects: Arriola & Fiol

Site Constraints: 9,612 s.f.

Purpose: Discover how the fire station functions with its design.

Approach: Dissect the structure and discover how that dictated the program placement.

The function wraps around the focal point of the building: the double height truck bay.

By doing this it is allowing any fire fighter in the building to get to the trucks in the least

amount of time.

.3EMS Station

Location: 19 Old Fulton Street, Dumbo Brooklyn

Site Constraints: 4,200 s.f.

Purpose: Design an EMS Station in the given site keeping the height of the surrounding

buildings in mind.

Approach: Dramatic internal and external views.

Upon vising the site, I noticed three distinct views: The Brooklyn Bridge, New

York City skyline, and towards DUMBO Brooklyn. The given site had two unusual angles. By copying them at ten foot intervals, I created a criss-cross

grid which dictated the placement of my program.

Like "Parc de Bombers", I had the function wrap around the truck bays in order for circulation

to be the most efficient. I wanted to define the

bay, but not enclose it. Using the grid, I created

angled partitions that puncture through all the

floors.

The bottom two floors are focused around the

view of the truck bay. The upper two floors

extend past the neighboring buildings

which allows it to have exterior views.

The zig-zag pattern created by the site grid created the possibility for unique angled balconies to look over the double height

space.
