P eter Gene Hernandez, (born October
8, 1985), known by his stage
name Bruno Mars, is an American
singer-songwriter, record producer,
actor and choreographer. Born and raised in
Honolulu, Hawaii, by a family of musicians,
Mars began making music at a young age and
performed in various musical venues in his
hometown throughout his childhood. He
graduated from high school and moved to Los
Angeles to pursue a musical career. Mars
produced songs for other artists, co-founding
production team The Smeezingtons.

Mars had an unsuccessful stint with Motown
Records, but then signed with Atlantic in 2009. He
became recognized as a solo artist after lending
his vocals to the songs "Nothin' on You" by B.o.B,
and "Billionaire" by Travie McCoy, which were
worldwide successes, and for which he co-wrote
the hooks. Mars' production formula allowed him,
and his production team, to work with an
assortment of artists from various genres.
His debut studio album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans,
released in 2010, peaked at number three on
the Billboard 200, anchored by the worldwide
number-one singles "Just the Way You Are" and
"Grenade", as well as by the single "The Lazy
Song". The album was nominated for seven
Grammy Awards, winning Best Pop Vocal
Performance for "Just The Way You Are". His
second album, Unorthodox Jukebox, released in
2012, peaked at number one in the United States,
UK and other international markets. The album
spawned the international singles "Locked Out of
Heaven", "When I Was Your Man" and
"Treasure".

Bruno is now a
worldwide super-
star.
B runo Mars grew up in a very musical
family. His father, Pete, was a Latin
percussionist from Brooklyn, and his
mother, Bernadette ("Bernie"), was a singer.
In Waikiki Beach, Mars's family performed a Las Vegas
-style revue that included Motown hits, doo-wop
melodies and celebrity impersonations. Growing up
around entertainers, Mars began picking up musical
instruments from early childhood. "I've always had a
drum set, a piano, a guitar ... and never got trained to
play. It was just always there," he later recalled. "That's
just how I learned, just being surrounded by it my
whole life." At the age of 4, he joined the family
musical act as an Elvis impersonator and quickly
become one of the stars of the show. He continued to
perform with his family throughout his childhood, and
as he approached adolescence he added Michael
Jackson to his impersonation repertoire.

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, invited to
perform by Mars, provided a slightly
bizarre but enjoyable one-song
interlude.
Throughout the show, Mars and
RHCP were aided and abetted by a
whirlwind of visual extras: fireworks,
lasers, blinding stage lights and
thousands of iPhone cameras flashing
like fireflies – epileptics would have
been well advised to take cover.
“Bruno saved the day”, said a po-
faced analyst back in the Sky
studio
T he Half Time show is an
American institution, with
everyone from Michael
Jackson to The Rolling
Stones having performed, so perhaps
for some this year’s choice of Bruno
Mars was a little underwhelming.
Dressed in a glittery gold jacket, Mars
was all agile twirls, choreographed
foot stomps and knock-kneed jiving –
the latter a clear nod to Elvis, whom
Mars used to impersonate as a
child.
