President's Message

Spring time in Nebraska , warm

weather , sunshine , cloudy and

rain , and cold windy days , all in

the same week. The recent warm

days got me ready to get out the

Model A and when it turned cold

again it was a real let-down. But

all things considered I think things

are looking up , I got out one of the

A's , checked the oil, lubricated all

those little areas under the hood

and greased the chassis, I think I

am ready to roll.

In the spirit of spring the Board has

decided to try an out door , in-

person meeting for this month and

I hope to see you all there, remem-

ber your mask and we will try to

keep our distance.

The board has planned some driv-

ing events and the Spring Highway

Litter Pick-up is on the calender.

Jason Suggs is organizing a tour of

a CopperSmith's shop, more info

to follow.

If you have not heard, the college

has cancelled the Wheels at the

Fort, and all campus activities for

the summer and the Board is try-

ing to come up with ideas to re-

place it, we would love to hear any

of your ideas or thoughts.

Until next month , keep safe.

Volume 53, Issue 4 Upcoming Events Yay!! Our survey showed that a majority of members would come to a meeting held outside and a driving tour with masks and social distancing. We are going to have a Face to Face meeting! It’s on our regular day — Saturday, April 10 But the time is different — 2PM (warmer and lighter) Our meeting place is at the City Park in Papillion. The park is at Lincoln and Washington (84th ST). Just south of Papillion Creek. This park has a large pavilion with lots of picnic tables, so we will be able to be socially distanced. Please wear your masks, too. Bring a chair if you prefer. This is the park where we have had several club picnics (but not the one in 2019).

Highway 36 Trash Pickup Spring is finally coming back to Nebraska and with the nice weather comes our responsibility to clean up our portion of Highway 36. The date is going to be the 17th of April, with a rain date of 24th of April. We will meet at Cubby’s gas station in Bennington at the intersection of 156th St. and Highway 36 at 10:00 a.m. and carpool from there to our pickup site. This is a relatively easy job if we can get enough vol-unteers. Please sign up at the meeting or contact me to let me know you want to help and support our Club. My phone is 402-333-1393 or e-mail me at [email protected] . Howard Denker

Did you get your ENWICC calendar book yet? Gayle and Howard picked some up for Meadowlark members, but they are not going to deliver them to you. If you want one, contact one of them and go pick one up or ask them to bring one to the April meeting for you. If you are a Facebooker, you might enjoy the new ENWICC Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/enwicc

July 17 Joslyn Art Museum is planning a display called Art Deco Summer. They have invited us to display some Model As on Saturday, July 17; 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with a rain date of July 18. Please contact Bruce Rima if you are interesting in putting your Model A in this display. More info later.

May 22 Tour to a Coppersmith Shop in Shenandoah , IA (Rain date May 23) We will meet at 8:30 AM at the QT gas station at Fort Crook Rd and Childs Rd in Bellevue and depart to Shenandoah, IA at 9:00 AM using highways 34 and 59. Pack a lunch or cook on your manifold as we will be eating lunch when we arrive. Tea and lemonade may be provided, but feel free to bring your own beverages. Following a demonstration of coppersmithing, we will depart to return home mid-afternoon. The shop will be full of art work and is fenced in. Calm, well behaved dogs are encour-aged to attend. The shop will be mostly open to the air with plenty to see outside as well, but please wear a mask when inside the facility or within 6 feet of another per-son. Please sign up at the April or May meetings or contact Jason Suggs ([email protected], 402-801-2738).

May 15 9AM to 2PM Skills and Grilles Car Show at Gretna High School The show is on! Bob and Jim will need your help to put it to-gether. Please sign up at the meeting or call them to say you will help with one of these jobs: • Set-up • Registration • Parking

April 18 Economy Run — and Odometer Poker Gas prices are getting pretty high! Let’s take a run and see what kind of gas mileage our Model As are getting. We will meet at Crescent at 1 PM, where we will fill up each Model A with gas and record our mile-age. The rest of the route is TBA, but it will end at another gas station, where we will record our mileage and compute our gas mileage. While we are looking at our odometers, we are going to play a little 5 “card” draw (without the draw). No royal cards and zeros will be han-dled by drawing from a deck (don’t want to give an advantage to those who don’t drive much!) and no decimal places. It ought to be a nice drive, whether you win the Economy Run or

Poker Hand or not. Please reserve your spot by contacting Don & Janet Graves ([email protected], 402-453-7166).

• PA Booth • Presenting Awards • Clean –up

Call Bob at 402-332-3993 Call Jim at 402-995-1005

Even if you cannot work at the Skills and Grilles Show, please plan to attend! Meadowlarks can bring their Model A’s (or other antique or classic cars) to show without paying the registration fee. Or, they can register and be eligible for an award. The parking lot at Gretna High is very large, so we will be able to spread out and have no problem social distancing. Also, start spreading the word. A flier will be sent out to you soon to share with everyone you know who has any interest in automobiles, trucks, tractors, etc. See you there!

Those Model Aing were Steve & Dave Zikmund, Bruce Rima, Ed & Susan Dellinger, Don & Gerry Chase, Char-lie Earnest, Don & Karen Noodell, Bob & Mary McKinney, Dave & Esther Miller. Jason Suggs brought up the rear in modern iron. His transmission is currently out for repair.

It turned out to be a beautiful day, at least for March. We started at Crescent, IA and went north to Missouri Valley. Then, over to Modale, back down to HWY 30 and over to Blair. Then, some windy back roads to Cherry Hills to visit the new Zesto there. The only problem was Graves’ quail just about flew away and was replaced by a rag to keep the water from spraying out.

The city of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, is known world-wide for the “smallest gas station in the world.” The tiny, 3 ½-foot-by-4-foot Standard station was right downtown next to where the Graystone building is today. According to a recent article in the Detroit Lakes Tribune: "In 1937 the tiny station was featured in “Ripley’s Believe it Or Not” publication (before it became a TV show) and was also featured in a 1949 issue of “Science and Mechanics” magazine." The article goes on to say: "According to in-formation gathered from the Becker County Historical Society, the smallest gas station in the world was owned by J.M. Sauer and his sons, Roy and Lee. The inside of the gas station was so tiny that it had only enough room for one person; however, it did have a much larger room downstairs. A trap door in the little gas station featured a spiral staircase that went down into a larger space where there was a bathroom and a storage area for things like bulk oil." The miniature gas station can now be seen in the lower level of the Becker County Historical Society.

The World’s Smallest Gas Station

An Interesting Event in the 1990s We wanted to do a photo shoot with a great background. So, we decided to meet at an old school near Hanscom Park. Trouble was we didn’t say which side of the old school. So, half of us met on the north side and the other half on the south side. We never did run into each other. One group found a nice bunch of trees for a background and the other group found nice houses. Neither group could believe it when we found out what happened. These photos are from the two groups.

Model A Day at the Museum is Sept. 18. It is not too early to make your hotel reserva-tion in Kalamazoo. New things are coming to the Gilmore (where the Model A Museum is located): From the latest MAFFI Minute: “By the time of our September Model A Day

event, construction should begin on a Muscle Car Museum and an International Museum. Horseless Carriage Club as a partner museum. This club will be exhibiting their vehicles in The Steam Barn while development takes place for their own museum which will be constructed next year. There will also be a Corvette display in the main Gilmore museum this year. “ The Swap Meet at Model A Day is small but totally devoted to Model A parts! • Here is A nice new video of the Model A Museum

Volume 53, Issue 4 Greetings and Updates from our Members

A note from George Tangeman: Well, March 10th I got a new hip, ah the golden years. On March 7th, I started up the model A for the first time since November, it started right up.

From Ed & Millie Jankowski We have been busy the last two Saturdays driving our Model A. On March 13th we joined a group to do a drive by for a 3 1/2 year old little boy in Lawrence Kansas who was treated for cancer at Jude's Hospital and now is in total remission. It was cloudy but dry as we pulled out of the garage but within a few miles it started to rain . There were thirty cars for the drive by with 8 of them being antique or classic. Our Model A pickup was the oldest. It was very rewarding to see the little GRIT standing in the driveway watching the cars. On March 20th we toured with the Plain Ol A's from Olathe on the back roads to Eudora. At Eudora we all enjoyed a stop at the Dairy Queen for nourishment to contin-ue the journey to DeSoto Kansas - home to Dean Weller's "Grandpa's Garage" From DeSoto we all re-turned to our respective homes. The attached picture shows a couple cars that the Mead-owlarks should remember. John and Debra Smeltzer's 31 Cabriolet (Dick Knapp's daughter and son in law) and our trusty 29 pickup. We are looking forward to many more Model A outings this year to make up for the last year's lean year.

Surely, you can think of a good caption for this photo! Get your thinking cap on and come up with a good one. Then, send it to Steve Zikmund ([email protected]) by April 24. **We aren’t really giving out prizes for the Caption Contest winners. April Fool! ☺ But, you will get your name and caption in the newsletter. If you have a good photo that is just begging for a caption, please send it to Steve.

Greetings and Updates from our Members Volume 53, Issue 4

Latest from Mike and Marilyn Cahalane: “Look what we found at our RV park.” Pretty jazzy Model T ride. Maybe next year the Cahalanes should take their pretty ‘29 Sport Coupe with them to Arizona to tootle around the RV park ☺.

A little humor from Gayle Hanshaw: Q: What do you call a pig with laryngitis? A: Disgruntled. Q: Why couldn't the pony sing? A: It's a little horse. Q: What do you call a pig with no legs? A: A groundhog. Q: Where do you find a turtle with no legs? A: Where you left it. Q: What do you call a camel in Alaska? A: Lost. Q: How many bones are in the human body? A: All of them. Q: What did the left eye say to the right eye? A: Between you and me, something smells. Q: What are the four food groups? A: Fast - Frozen - Canned and Take Out.

More humor from a member who prefers to stay anonymous : A LAWYER RUNS A STOP SIGN and gets pulled over by a sheriff. He thinks he’s smarter being a big shot lawyer from New York and has a better education than a sheriff from West Virginia. The sheriff asks for license and registration. The lawyer asks, “What for?” The sheriff responds, “You didn’t come to a complete stop at the stop sign.” The lawyer says, “I slowed down and no one was coming.” “You still didn’t come to a complete stop. License and registration please,” says the

sheriff impatiently. The lawyer says, “If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and

stop, I’ll give you my license and registration and you can give me the ticket. If not, you let me go and don’t give me the ticket.”

The sheriff says, “That sounds fair, please exit your vehicle.” The lawyer steps out and the sheriff takes out his nightstick and starts

beating the lawyer with it. The sheriff says, “Do you want me to stop or just slow down?”

Interesting Things from the Web

Did you know that Henry Ford played the violin? According to Henry Ford: A Penchant for Fiddling, Ford loved the fiddle music played at dances during his youth. As a young man, he even saved up enough money to buy himself an inex-pensive violin ($1.50) and learned a few tunes. To relax after a full day of work, he would scratch out “Turkey in the Straw” or some other square dance tune on his fiddle. Henry’s first violin is on display at the Henry Ford in Dearborn, MI. Later, as a wealthy man in the 1920s, Henry collected expensive violins from all over the world. He often loaned them out to prominent musicians. Ford didn’t ever become a great violinist, but he did play a bit with the “Old-Time Dance Orchestra.” You can hear more about Henry and his violins/fiddling at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVMJ3hGbz2g

Model A Parts for Sale We received this mes-sage from a local Model T owner: I just purchased a very large collection of Model T parts and found a nice collection of Model A parts included. I'm reaching out to see if any of your members would be in need of any parts. Just looking to break even, on the pur-chase price. George Schmidt Elkhorn, Nebraska [email protected] 402-321-4873

April Fools’ Day—celebrated on April 1 each year—has been celebrat-ed for several centuries by different cultures, though its exact origins remain a mystery. April Fools ’ Day traditions include playing hoaxes or practical jokes on others, often yelling “April Fools!” at the end to clue in the subject of the April Fools ’ Day prank. While its exact history is shrouded in mystery, the embrace of April Fools ’ Day jokes by the me-dia and major brands has ensured the unofficial holiday ’s long life. Some historians speculate that April Fools ’ Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calen-dar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. In the Julian Calendar, as in the Hindu calendar, the new year began with the spring equinox around April 1. People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to cele-brate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes and were called “April fools.” These pranks includ-ed having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as “poisson d’avril” (April fish), said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person. From the History Channel—read more there.

Gavin Ellsworth, Jeff and Tami Graves’ son, is still

working on recovering from his gunshot wound on March 1. After more than 3 weeks at CHI Health Bergan Mercy, most of it in the ICU, he has been transferred to the Ma-donna Rehab facility to get his strength back. He is doing great! Jeff and Tami say “THANKS” to everyone who offered up their prayers for Gavin.

Another Meadowlark who passed away

in March was Jack Strong. Jack was a

member from 1970 to 1974. His obituary is here.

Carole Hendrix was hospitalized recently for elective
