COMMUNION
DigestSession
Brownson welcomed eight new members into our church fam-ily at the Session meeting on Sunday, December 8. Session also made plans with incoming elders as each Ministry Team planned, did some knowledge transfer and set dates for the coming year. The new and cur-rent Elders discussed the Elder Retreat on January 11 and the book study that will be used as the theme for the Elder Retreat, Canoeing the Mountains: Christian Leadership in Unchartered Territo-ry.An ad hoc committee was formed to continue the process of updating the Administrative Manual of Operations, that will take the first three months of 2020 to make changes for a Ses-sion vote. We bid farewell to the outgoing elders with a gift of thanks for their service. Follow-ing the Session meeting, elders went out to Christmas Carol to Brownson members in the area.
Would you like to know more about Brownson? If you have been visiting and would like learn about Brown-son’s mission and vision or how to go about joining our faith-filled community, join us in Conference Room “A” on Wednesday night, Jan-uary 29 at 5:30. A light supper will be served. Contact Marilyn Baxter at 910.692.6252 or members@ brown-sonchurch.org if you plan to attend or have questions.
DiscoveryClass
What a wonderful year 2019 has been. As we begin a new year together, I want to take a look back. Here are some wonderful
things that have happened:• We have seen significant growth in our Children’s programs each and every Sun-day morning and Sunday evening – the Chancel is full of energy during the Chil-dren’s Sermon!• The new initiative fund helped to be more open to the Holy Spirit and launched and supported ministries like:
• Faith and Race: Building Bridges of Understanding Among Neighbors• Waking Up White• Home Communion• The Church Picnic
• We dreamed about a mini-bus, and we have one. We dreamed about providing scholarships to students at the BLC, and we have. We dreamed about reaching beyond our walls with the trip to DC, and we did it.• We created the first Adult Discipleship Ministry Team and we have new offerings with classes full each Sunday.
“A missional community called to love and live in
Christ”
• We have worked to make Brownson more financially stable both today and in the long-term by completing one of the most successful stewardship campaigns at Brownson.• The church supported a Global Leaders Class of youth who also participated in a mission trip to Peru.• We welcomed 47 new members to the Brownson Church family in 2019.• The BLC is in its third year of operation serving 85 children this school year.• Our church is committed to our mission statement and living out our six core values: Compelling Worship, Deepening Discipleship, Caring M2M, Reaching Beyond our Walls, Making Room for Others and Investing in the Next. The list above is just a start. During our Congregational Meeting on January 26, we will share more accomplishments through our Annual Report and we will also share our Session approved budget for 2020.I have seen God at work in this church. I am so thankful to be here. The future is so bright at Brownson!

Members at Home
Do you ever call out asking God to show up in your life but at the time God feels distant or even silent? Believ-ers experience different seasons in their life. Spiritual winter is a time when you long for but cannot sense God’s presence. As hard as it is, sometimes this spiri-tual season comes in the cold, dark months of natural winter. What do we do when spiritual winter comes? When life seems to be crashing down around you, allow the gift of a Stephen Minister to walk this wil-derness journey with you. Our Stephen Ministers are trained to help through the “winters” of life, providing emotional and spiritual support during tough times. Reach out to Karen Allen for details: [email protected].
“I liked the carolers.
We are grateful for coordinators Ellie Collins, Jane Pajak and all who helped de-liver poinsettias to more than 100 members who were ill, grieving, or unable to come to church in the weeks before Christmas.

Sunday School Classes (10 AM)
D I S C I P L E S H I PA D U L T
A discussion-based class that pairs current events with biblical passages and themes, using The Wired Word curriculum. Coordinated by Tim & Shauna Lovin.
A class that delves deeply into Scripture using the PC(USA) curriculum, The Present Word. Open to all adults! Led by Joe Currie and Mary Margaret McNeill.
A class that fosters dialogue around pertinent topics from a faith-based perspective. For this study, we will look at the Book of Luke, which presents the narrative of Jesus Christ as good news, challenge, and hope, and how it applies to our lives today. All adults are welcome! Facilitated by Austin Vernon, Bob Andrade, Kay Bull-ard, and John Bullard.
Formerly known as the Men’s Bible Class, this group uses The Present Word curriculum to facilitate their dis-cussions of the Bible. Led by Larry McNeill, Fred Mon-roe, and Milton Sills.
Theology on Tap – A Bible study for the men of the church that meets on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 PM at Table on the Green - 2205 Midland Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374. Led by Charles Harris and Gerald Ostlund.Men’s Prayer Breakfast – This group meets the first and third Tuesdays of every month at 7 AM at Sizzlin’ Steak or Eggs. Each meeting begins with a meal and concludes with a devotional. For more information, please contact Fred Monroe at (910) 692-2466.Psalms Bible Study – The Book of Psalms is some-times referred to as the “anatomy of the soul,” as it cov-ers the full gamut of human experience, including an-ger, sorrow, lament, thanksgiving, joy, and worshipful praise. For six weeks (beginning on January 14) we will meet on Tuesdays from 2:00-3:00 PM in the Cornerstone Conference Room to discuss this deeply spiritual and deeply human book. All are welcome to join us! Facili-tated by Austin Vernon, Linda and Allen Pridgen.

Nothing says joy like spending the Christmas sea-son with preschool children. Our BLC students had the privilege of spreading Christmas joy by singing Christmas Carols for residents at Penick Village, collecting children’s hats and gloves for Sandhills Coalition and, of course, taking part in the BLC Christmas program, A Very Special Birthday, where they helped to share the true meaning of Christmas with others. We will be collecting socks in January for children in need.

Registration for the
2020-2021 2020-2021school year will begin on January 15, 2020.Our church members have priority for placement, so be sure to get with Jamie ([email protected]) to get your child registered. Our preschool fills up quickly! We always have opportunities for volunteering, so if you feel led to spend your days with our amazing children, please let Jamie know. Happy New Year!

Preschool Praise continues to grow each month, and we are so thankful for all of the children. During December, we celebrated Christmas a little early with our Christmas party. We made ornaments that were delivered during caroling, sang Christmas songs, shared the Christmas story, and enjoyed a fun time of fellowship together!

Christmas Party
Preschool Praise and Kids Connect were such an exciting part of worship on December 8. With an upbeat rendition of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” and “Go Tell it on the Mountain,” the children brought smiles to the hearts and faces of our congregation during this Advent season.
During Kids Connect on Decem-ber 15, the children enjoyed a Christmas Party with great food, fellowship and fun.

The high school and middle school youth groups sponsored two families for the Empty Stocking Project to help local families provide gifts for local families to open on Christmas morning.

On December 8, some of our youth joined other members to go caroling at area retirement homes. Residents enjoyed the beautiful voices filling the halls with lots of Christmas cheer. Following caroling, the group shared a delicious meal of chili provided by Brownson’s Meal Ministry.

Christmas PartyThe annual Christmas Party was held on December 15 at the church. Kids donned their ugliest Christmas sweaters, competed in Christmas-themed “Minute to Win it” games, and enjoyed the annual white elephant gift exchange.
Confirmation ClassesConfirmation classes begin January 26 and continue through April 19, Confir-mation Sunday. Confirmation is a process designed to help youth think about their faith and joining the church. Letters were mailed in November to Brown-son youth in eighth grade inviting them to participate. Joining the church is an important decision in a young person’s spiritual journey. Please contact Austin Vernon if you have any questions.
June 14-20, 2020, we are offering a high school mission trip experience through Appalachia Service Project. This organization provides youth with hands-on opportunities to help alleviate substandard housing in rural Appalachia. Please turn in a $50 deposit to reserve your spot for this amazing opportunity.
Youth Group and Sunday School will resume a normal schedule, beginning January 12, 2020 (Sunday), and
Chick-fil-A Bible Study starts back the following Thursday, January 16. Please see the church website
for the updated 2020 calendar.
Youth Ski TripJanuary 17-19, 2020, we will go on our annual high school youth ski trip to Beech Mountain! Please turn in your $50 deposit soon to reserve your spot.RESORT

Christmas in Southern Pines was a festive musical presentation by the Chancel Choir and featured Moore County Brass. It was a spectacular evening with a full house. The Music Ministry followed up the Cantata with Joy Sunday, also featuring Moore County Brass. Also members of the Chancel Choir provided entertainment featuring letters from Santa and Christmas songs to the Southern Pines Civic Club on December 2.

Deryle CarrPW Moderator
What Are Circles? Presbyterian Women at Brownson are or-ganized into small groups called CIRCLES that meet monthly to provide an inclusive, caring community of women.• Faith is nurtured and growth takes place through Worship - Study (Horizon Bible Study Program), Friendship and Outreach• Outreach is determined by each circle. Some of the examples include: Backpack Pals, Boys and Girls Club of the Sandhills, Linus Blankets, Sandhills Student Assis-tance, Empty Stocking Fund and many more.• Circles pull together and sponsor special events to finance missions (global and local) and scholarships. i.e. PW Craft Fair and Val-entine Stay at Home Tea.We have fun while putting our faith into ac-tion! We make a difference with our talents and resources! A special Thank You to John Tyson for a wonderful Christmas Program. Looking ahead: Sunday, January 26 at both services Gifts of Women Sunday (the wom-en of the household of God who regularly do beautiful things in love and faithfulness to Jesus Christ are celebrated)
There is such an incredible amount of good work being accomplished in our circles and I appreciate all of our members and circle leaders. Not only are the leaders responsible for agendas and minutes, but they also guide us through Bible Study, partnership missions, concerns of the members and the big projects of the PW. Thank you for all of your hard work.

A big Thank You to 31 volunteers who helped families shop for 144 children of all ages, so they will have a Merry Christ-mas! They assisted in shopping for clothes, shoes, toys and books and then wrapped all the gifts! Thanks to the five volunteers that helped set up the “store.” We wished many Merry Christmases, Happy Holi-days & Feliz Navidads!
UP coming events...With the generous support of the congre-gation and the local missions endowment, we collected over 100 coats during the month of November for Southern Pines Elementary School students. That means over 100 children in our community will be kept warm this winter! Along with the coats, parents picked out matching scarves and hats lovingly created by the Prayer Shawl Ministry of Brownson.
SPE Coat Drive
Hygiene Kit Packing DayOn January 26, 2020, the congregation is invited to participate in a hygiene kit packing day during the 10 AM hour. These hygiene kits will be de-livered to Southern Pines Elementary School.

Only a few spots left! If you are inter-ested in going on our mission trip to the school for the deaf in San Martin, Peru June 20-28 we need to hear from you. $50 secures your spot. Scholar-ships are available to assist in covering the costs of the trip. Contact Austin Vernon in the church office if you have any questions.

Brownson Buddies R e a d i n g P r o g r a m
On January 23, 2020, we will begin our Brownson Buddies Reading Program with third grade students at Southern Pines Elementary School. This program will occur every Thursday from 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM. Each child will be paired with two Brownson Buddies, so the volunteer commitment is twice a month (or every other week) for each adult volunteer. Teachers will send students with classwork and books to work on reading skills with their Brownson Buddies, which means anyone can participate in this program! If you would like to join this exciting new program or have questions about it, please call Austin Vernon at the church office or email him at [email protected].
A great time was had by all at the Food Bank in November and December. This volunteer opportunity is available the second Tuesday of each month from 9-11 AM. Please email Austin Vernon, [email protected] if you would like to be added to the list of volunteers! A coordinator will reach out to you monthly to see if you are in-terested in assisting during the 2 hour shift per month with other Brownson members.
Brownson will be the host church for the Family Promise Homeless shelter the week of Monday, January 13 - Thursday, January 17. We need 20-22 volunteers. Please search your heart, check your calendar & contact Chris DiMarco if you have time to give to this worthy cause aiding homeless woman and children (910-528-5169 or email her at [email protected]).
