Did you know that Ohio offers a free program to assess and support child development from birth to age three?! Help Me Grow now known as Early Intervention (EI) is a program that will come to your home to evaluate your child to see if they may qualify for support. EI providers are well-trained professionals who use a non-judgmental and compassionate approach that empowers parents with skills, tools and confidence to nurture the healthy growth of their children. The Malvern Elementary PTO is happy to have been able to provide a pavilion area beside the playground. They have been fundraising for some time to bring our kids this pavilion. It will provide shelter at recess during those hot months of the school year and also an opportunity for outside learning and class par-ties. The PTO was awarded a $5000 Lowe's Grant to help defray some of the costs and to provide tables. The PTO would like to thank everyone who has supported the recent fundraisers and hope all will continue to support their efforts in providing students and staff with items and events throughout the school year. Also, a huge thank you to Mr. Eric Griffin! He headed up the en-tire construction and spent many hours volunteering his time to build our kids such a wonderful pavilion to enjoy. Mr. Griffin also wanted to recognize a few other volunteers who helped him along the way: Troy Kandel, Jim Townsend, Chester Ashton, and Tim Babiczuk. Pictured is Mr. Griffin surrounded by some of our very thankful students!

National Kindness Week

Brown Local celebrated National Kindness Week in Janu-ary with a bulletin board outside of the offices. The board was created to help us promote kindness in in our building. Students and staff members are welcome to attach a sticky note or staple a small paper to the board identifying a person who deserves a compliment. It can be teacher to student, student to teacher, student to student, teacher to teacher, etc.! The quote in the mid-dle of the board, “Be kinder than necessary. It’s not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed” is from the movie, Wonder.

It will be held in the preschool classroom at Malvern Elemen-tary 3242 Coral Rd. NW Malvern, OH 44644. Brown Local School District resi-dents with children who will be four or three years old by August 1, 2018 will be eligible to fill out an application. No ap-pointment is needed. They made 13 blankets and 13 stuffed animals. Pic-tured clockwise from left: Luke Thomas, Joshua Untch, DeLonte Simmons, Owen Ball, Thomas Poole, Van Foley, and Hayden Wilkinson.

Right to Read Week

Malvern Elementary celebrated Right to Read Week during the week of February 26-March 2. Students celebrated by having a Spirit Week and by welcoming local author, Andrea Legg, to come visit our school. She read her book, "Flap Your Wings, Little Robin"

and taught the students sign language. She dis-cussed how important it is to be kind, to help others, and that everyone has a special gift. Her book is available for purchase at local books stores and on Amazon. Mrs. Schmidt's class was able to spend more time with Andrea after her presentation and gave the class a signed copy of the book!

Girl Scout News In the spirit of helping others, Girl Scout Troops #60310 and #60340 participated in our local food drive. They made dona-tions to be used to help those in need, as well as support our local CARE team, headed by Ashley Dorr. The Girl Scouts toured the food pantry at a local church, to learn how the donations were being used to help others. While there, the girls had the opportunity to help assemble over 90 backpacks, that are sent home every week, through our school. It was a great experience for our troops and they are looking forward to working with the CARE team in the future!

The 10th annual Steve Mohr Memorial Malvern Scholarship Fund Golf Outing will be held Sunday, May 6th at Edgewater Golf Course with a 9:00 am shotgun start. uing this tradition by supporting this event! If you are unable to attend but would like to contribute, hole sponsors are $50. The Malvern 5th/6th Grade girls Volleyball team participated in two tournaments over the past two months on January 28th and February 25th at New Philadelphia and Tusky Valley. We currently have 17 girls involved in the Youth Volleyball team that participates in the Tusky Valley Youth League and the Dover Youth League. At the last tournament the girls were introduced to players from the West Virginia University volley-ball team. These players talked to them about working hard, being dedicated athletes, and great teammates. At our last tournament, the girls went 5-5 and showed great improve-ment from the first tournament. They are working hard and continuing their league play at Dover. They will have another tournament at the end of March to wrap up their season.

Members of the Elementary Student Council and Middle School Stu-dent Council recently held a pop tab and change drive to become

Change Ban-dits for Ak-ron Chil-dren's Hospi-tal.

The students at Malvern Elementary also helped by donating spare change for 2 weeks.

Altogether, Malvern stu-dents raised

$872.31 to donate to the Radio-Thon Change Bandit Drive and had over 11,000 pop tabs. To celebrate, the Student Councils took a trip to Akron Children's Hospital where they were on a live video feed and on the radio. While there, they visited the gift store and complet-ed many fun crafts and participated in games. To end the day, the students enjoyed lunch at Spaghetti Warehouse.

SPRING Choir Concert and Art Show

May 10, 2018 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Featuring Grades 6-12

Eighth Graders Learn to “Argue” After learning about Argumentative writing and choosing a topic that students felt strongly about, 8th graders had the

opportunity to present their argumentative speeches to Mr. Babiczuk to try to convince him to allow them to have their cell phones during lunch if they have a Top Stinger card. The students did research and came up with very convincing arguments that left Mr. Babiczuk con-sidering the option. He says, “I’m very impressed with the research they did and the reasons they are giving, I’m going to take the week-end and really think about this.” Students made some strong arguments about why they feel it should be a reward for those who work hard to get the highest card. They say that, “Most kids who are on Top Stinger are well behaved and deserve this reward.” They also argue that, “Since the High School students are already allowed to have their phones at lunch, it is not fair that Middle School kids don’t even have the option.” Mr. Babiczuk took notes on what the students were arguing and was very inspired by the hard work and dedication they took to research their arguments.
