Brown, Adams, Andrew and relay team qualify for finalsBy LARRY LAVELLE

Times Sports WriterBERKELEY-Edwards Stadi

um emptied out in a hurry andsuddenly the foot traffic outnumbered the cars on busy Bancroft Way.

Four athletes wearing thepowder blue warmups ·of Los

Altos High trudged along thesidewalk, picking their waythrough the mob of humanity, but not with total anonymity.

"Hey, Superman!" hollered apasserby in mixed admirationand envy.

One of Rick Brown's, teammates nudged him with an elbow and smirked.

For Brown surely was Super~man Friday as the best of California's preps competed in qualifying tests for today's 52nd" annual state CIF track and fieldchampionships.

Up in the pressbox one scribe, getting his first look at Brown, exclaimed:

"That guy is inhuman."Well, the adults and the ado

lescents are in agreement.Brown is out of this world.

Frank Berry of Crenshaw(Los Angeles) made it clear'enough to anyone who botheredto watch the first heat of the440.

Berry finished third in that'race. He got off very fast. Toobad. Berry missed a good show.Brown broke leisurely from hisstandup start, but after 100, or

RICK BROWN so yards he pushed his "catch______ •. 1..- __ - . ~ -",_i ...•.'.

up" button which means it'stime to pass anyone who showshis heels.

Brown closed so quickly thatby the second turn it was allover. He breezed home in 48flat to easily to qualify.

After Berry had finished hisrace, he could hardly wait torush up to Locke's Donald Fisher-a friendly competitor fromLos Angeles-who ran fifth.

You could almost lip readfrom the uppermost row of thestadium, as Berry crooked histhumb . in the direction ofBrown:

"Hey, man, where'd that catcome from?"

Not too many minutes earlier,Brown tore around the last turnof the 880 and breezed home in1: 53.9. Again he had playedcatch-up successfully.

He caught the tape across theletters one more time in anchoring the Knights' mile relay teamto a 3: 16.1 victory. The slowestOakland Tech quartermiler wastimed in 49.1-but incredibly theOAL champs finished second toLos Altos.

When Larry Davis got the baton from leadoff man Bob

Thompson he had eight runnersin front of him. He passed sixof them in one turn around the

track in hitting 48.7.Andrew ran the third leg in a

hurry-48.3-and left only onerabbit for Brown to catch.

Br'own buried Tech's MauriceJackson with a 47.6 leg, and ex-plained afterward: '

"Our plan was to qualify easy-well not easy, within reason-but ... " said Brown. Itdidn't require' further explanation. Jackson was a challengeand Brown had to respond toit.

Leo Long, Los Altos coach, readily admits that he has beenpointing his kids towards a statecham pionsh ip.

If today isn't the day, therewill be much disappointment.

Following Friday's action, there was bubbling confidence.

"We're just as pleased aspunch," said Long, as he reassembled his team in the parking lot across from the stadium.

."Everything's great. We qualified where 'we' wanted to. In a

way, I'm even, glad Larr.y's(Larry Davis) out of the 880. Ithink we would have scratched

him anyway so he could concentrate on the relay.

One thing which may haveswayed Long was the 1:52.7performance by Castlemont'sNathan Burks in the half. Thatwas the fastest time of the day.

Castlemont figured to be theteam to beat-as far as LosAltos is concerned. Burks issomething the Knights didn't expect to contend with, inasmuchas he ran only 1:56.6 in theOAL meet.

Long won't come out and predict doubles for Brown andChris Adams, his deluxe weightman.

"That Ricky Brown is something, isn't he? And Chris, he'sin great position for a double. And look out for Jim Andrew."

Adams, the defending statechamp in the discus, wheeledone 190-4. The national recordholder with a Ibest of 201 didn'tbother to take off his sweats, but led the field of qualifiers.

In the shot put he rolled uphis sleeves and got off a 62-21;4toss, second only to RandyWithrow of Pasadena, the topqualifier at 62-41f4.

In all, the Midpeninsula bat-

ted .667, with a dozen qualifying out of 18. Those figures donot include the two-mile nor thetriple jump which required nopreliminaries.

Perhaps the most heroic ,ef~fort of all was that· of stubbylittle Julian Lucas of Gunn.

Barely edged out in his, heatof the 440-fourth in 49.2-'-hejumped the gun once, then ranout in the 180 lows.

But with his team virtuallydead in the mile relay, Lucastook them from fifth to thirdwith an anchor Jeg 48.7 in whichhe wore down El Cerrito's Manuel Evans.

Other qualifiers:Andrew, third in heat of 440,

48.5.

Dave Chamness, Awalt, thirdin .heat of mile, 4: 19.3

Boris Scalier, Cupertino, thirdin heat of 220, 22.4.

Ken Murphy, Menlo-Atherton,sixth in long jump trials,23-13;1 .

Steve Bowen, Sunnyvale, fourth in discus trials. 177-3.

John C e g I i a, Homestead,cleared qualifying height of 13-6in pole vault.

Those who failed:

Cupertino 440 relay, eighth inheat, 43.0; Vie Brooks, Los Al

tos, seventh in heat of high hur

dles, 14.9; Dave Bagshaw, Gunn, ninth in heat of high hurdles,14.9; Davis, Los Altos, fifth inheat of 880, 1:56.9.·

Can this incredible kid do it

again?That was the No. 1 que:>tion

today as the fifty-second annualCalifornia Interscholastic Fed

eration (CIF) State Track and

Field Championships met theirhour of resolution at DC Berke

ley's Edward Stadium. The "kid" is Rick Brown, the

unbelieveable yeoman work

horse of the Los Altos HighSchool Knights, who gave indi

cation in yesterday's trial com-Ipetition of a periormance thachas never yet be(;n equalled inthe Scate Meet, or anywhere!else for Ihat matter.

Brown, as he has all seasonlong, doubled in the baU-mileand 440 in the opening day competition and won both raceswith less than an hour':> rest between them. After he had run toa 1:53.9 triumph in the first heatof the 880, he came back with a48-flat quarter that was the bestof the day in that event.

And he ran. both a"aces with

smooth, fluid e f fort I e s sstrides, easier than your nextnine-hole trek around Muni .links, or a tour through theaisies of Safeway. As if to prove the dreadfully

tough double was no more lax·ing than a stroH, Brown savedhis finest heroics for the lasttrial of the afternoon - in themile relay. An c b 0 I' i n g aKnights' foursome that made upground off the fine carries ofLarry Davis and Jim Andrew,Brown clocked 47.6 as Los Altosnipped the tape in 3:16.8 and

. then waited in vain for someoneelse to match the mark.

Ups an~ Downs in "State Prep Meet

It was difficult to tell if some of the competitors were coming orgoing during yesterday's semifinals of the State Prep Track Meetin Edwards Stadium. Mark Jones of Marin County's Terra LindaHigh backed into a. finsls berth in the pole vault (Jeft) when he

cleared 13-0 on his third attempt. Jerry Haugan of Davis High in

Modesto backed out of the competition (above) when he failed toclear the qualifying height of 6-4. Actually, Haugan missed allthree chances at 6-2: That's not exactly how Dick Fosbury intendedhis famed backward flop to flop. Story on Page 30.

A m 0 n g other outstandingmarks yes t e r day was the3:16.8 mile relay by Tech, which led until Brown bootedLos Altos home in the stretch.

The Bulldogs, who are competing in the State Meet eventfor the third straight year after going undefeated againstOakland A t hIe tic Leaguecompetition over the samespan, set an all-time recordfor Eastbay prep quartets.

With all four' mnners goingunder 50 seconds, Tech's timewas 4-10ths of a second betterthan the area standard set byCastlemont last Saturday attbe Kennedy Games.

Burks' time makes him theEastbay's third fastest prephalf miler ever, just one-halfsecond behind 1968state champion Geor~e Alfaro of· Pittsburg.

Six of the Knights' seven en·trants in yesterday's trialsqualified fo the finals, but thestrong Los Altos contingent, also nicknamed the Knights, has a good chance to win asmany as five events.

Burks was the biggest sur·'prise of the trials, leadingfrom start to finish in a 1:52.7clocking with runners thathad gone nearly 4%-secondsfaster than his 1:56.6 previousbest.

"I was scared before therace," Burks admitted, "but Ithought I'd qualify second orthird in my heat. I expectedto go about 1:53.0, but I figured they (Mickey Senior ofMontclair and Morningside'sPercell Keeling) would gofaster.

"I felt good all the way, physically, but men talI y Ikept waiting for someone to

Burks, like everyone else inE d war d s Stadium, wasa m a zed with Brown, whoNate figures is the man tobeat in the 880.

"He's unbelievable," Burksexclaimed. "I've never seen ahigh s c h 0 0 1 runner thatstrong." .

El C e rr it 0 coach HaleRoach wasn't disappointed despite the failrire of the Gauchos' mile relay team to makethe finals. He was particularlyhappy about Mike Palomino's4:17.4 school record in themile.

"Palomino was fantastic,"Roach bubbled. "And SammyBurns still has a chance todouble in the sprints despitefinishing second in both of hisheats. "

The Gauchos still have anoutside shot for the team titlewith their 440 relay team, which was the second fastestqualifier in 41.5, and 220-manMike Britt capable of pickingup points.
