program highlighting pollinators of Iowa and
the amazing monarch butterfly. The event will begin with a
presentation by the Blank Park Zoo about pollinators in Iowa,
followed by family crafts, monarch tagging, cookies and
more. This year’s event will all take place at the Grimes Farm
Shelter House. Each family will receive a packet of milkweed
and nectar plant (as long as supplies last) to plant in your

including animals of Iowa, natural history, Marshall County
Conservation Board history and more. The winning team will
take home a cash prize of half of the collected registration fees,
with the other half going towards conservation projects
throughout the county. Snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, beer

Wanted: Apples At Prairie Heritage Day, volunteers demonstrate
how apple cider is pressed and give out free
samples of the sweet refreshment. Many bushels
of apples are needed to provide for the large crowd expected
at the popular Prairie Heritage Day Celebration on
Saturday, September 29 at the Grimes Farm.
If you have apples to spare or know someone who does,

What: MCCB, Theisens, and BassPro are hosting a summer giveaway. Participants must visit Marshall County parks that
clues allude to, snap a photo, post on social media, and are then entered into a drawing for the 2018 prizes.
How: For a chance to win, listen to the park clues on Kix 101.1 or find the park clues on MCCB’s Facebook page. Take
your picture by the park sign. Post your picture on Instagram* using #mccb2018giveaway, on our Facebook page under
the clue post, on Twitter using #mccb2018giveaway, or all three. You can post pictures on more than one social media
source, each post counts as one entry (maximum 3 entries per clue, each entry must use a different social media source).
When: Starting on September 20 listen to KIX101.1 or watch our Facebook page for park clues. There will be two clues

your front door with Marshall County
Conservation Naturalist Emily Herring.
During wreath construction, participants
will also learn about the history of wreaths,
common types of evergreen found in Iowa,
and how to properly harvest evergreen
from trees. We ask that kids under the age
of 14 have an adult present to help them
complete the wreath. At the end of the session, participants will
take home a wreath that will serve as a warm welcome to anyone

Hit us with your best shot! The
MCCB is holding its 18th
annual natural resource/
conservation photo contest. The entry deadline is noon on January 31, 2019. A contest
rule sheet may be picked up at
the nature center or is available
at our website. There are five categories for adults: Scenic
(Natural Resources), Native Plants, Native Wildlife, Outdoor Recreation and Open Nature. There is a special open class for
youth age 17 & younger. A new category of Outdoor Recreation
has been added this year. Outdoor recreation means a
photograph of
any type of recreation in Marshall County for example: fishing,
hunting, running, biking, etc. Only black and white or color
prints with minimum size 8” x 10” and maximum size 11” x 17”
will be accepted. A digital copy of each entry must also be
submitted on CD or flash drive. More than one digital photo
entry can be put on a CD or flash drive.
