Group discusses new use forEagle Bend school building

Supt. Scott Vedbraaten beginshis service at BrowervillePublic Schools

Scott Vedbraaten has assumed the duties of

Superintendent of Browerville Public School. Vedbraaten

is is looking forward to his new position, and meeting the

members of the community. See story on page 12.

Members of the Browerville High School Band recently vis-

ited Disney Land in California as part of their 2013 Band Trip.

Eight people met on July 2 in

he Clarissa City Hall to discuss

ossible uses for the Eagle Bend

    ormer high school building.

    tudents in the Eagle Valley

    chool District now attend

    chool at Clarissa, except for

hop and ag classes which con-

nue to be held in the Eagle

    end building.

Verna Toenyan, Todd Countyging Coordinator, chaired the

    meeting. The group expected to

    ear from Todd County

    evelopment Director Rich

    Utech about potential develop-

ment plans, but Utech did not

    ttend the meeting.

In the absence of the planned

    genda, Toenyan asked those in

    ttendance to share their

    houghts about strategies to

    maintain the building, consider

    lternative ownership by a city

r by the county, and possible

    uture uses of the building.

    Toenyan explained the inter-

est of the Eagle Bend Senior

Center in relocating to the build-

ing if the buildings kitchen could

    be renovated. Currently, volun-

teers at the Eagle Bend Senior

    Center produce over 4,000 meals

per month for various clients in

    the area. The volunteers would

    like to expand their nonprofit

business, but have no room to do

so in their present city building.Eagle Bend City

    Administrator Kevin Hess gave

his opinion that the city of Eagle

Bend would not take over the

    building from the school district

    unless there were businesses

committed to renting space in it.

    Mayor Brad Lorentz said, If

    theres major repairs needed,

that puts a greater stress on the

    taxpayers.

    Eagle Valley School Board

    members Shawn Roe and Adam

Riedel told the group that the

building needs a new roof and

    new heating system. Estimates

on the costs of these renovations

start at $56,000 for the roof, and

start at $6,000 for the heating,

    air conditioning, and ventilation

    systems.

    Kitchen equipment needs to

be replaced, and the kitchen torn

    out and redesigned to accommo-

    date expansion.

    Toenyan said, At least three

architects have looked at thebuilding and said its sturdy, and

    its got aesthetics.

    The group discussed whether

    the building could be renovated

in part, with a new heating sys-

tem to serve just part of the

    building, rather than the whole

    structure. The consensus was

    that this was possible. Members

    volunteered to pursue this idea

and get estimates on the cost of

doing it. The consensus of the

meeting was that a new natural
