Karin Nauber, Clarissa, has
been hired by the Long Prairie
Chamber of Commerce as its
new director. She applied in
February, was interviewed in
March, and began work on
April 22.
Nauber will work three
days per week, and has sched-
uled office time from 2 to 5
PM every Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Thursday at
the Chambers office in theLong Prairie Public Library
building.
If youre thinking, Ive
heard that name before, its
because you have. Karin
Nauber has been the main
reporter for the Independent
News Herald newspaper for
17 years. Karin will still work
for the paper part-time, and
expects to remain an active
news reporter, covering the
Todd County Board, and sev-
eral city councils and school
boards in the Eagle Bend-
Clarissa area of the county.
Although shes only beenChamber Director for a few
weeks, Karin has already
redesigned the Chambers web-
site. You can see the new look
at www.longprairie.org
.
When the Chamber board of
directors was interviewing for
the position, they wanted some-
one with web-building experi-
ence and strong computer skills.
Karen has both. She designed
the websites for the Independent
News Herald, The Verndale Sun,
the City of Hewitt, and the Cityof Clarissa.
When asked why a website
was important, Karin told us,
Its important because these
days its the first place people
look for information. When
they want to know about Long
Prairie, they will do a search
online. This is true whether they
are business people, tourists, or
employees doing some kind of
research for their jobs. They
will see our website.
Karin was also chosen
because of her personal net-
working experience. Over
the years she has been in
Todd County, Karin has built
relationships with many dif-
ferent kinds of people.
She said, If theres some-thing that I dont know how to
do, Ill know somebody who
knows how to do it, and I can
call them. Networking is
important because we need
teamwork in todays world.
Here, its the Chamber, local
businesses and nonprofits,
and citizens. Working togeth-
er, we can accomplish more
than we can working alone.
If people dont work together,
they are not gaining all the
progress that they could to
reach their goals.
Karin is also known for her
listening skills. As a reporter, she has had to listen to people
for 17 years. In her new posi-
tion as Chamber Director, she
will be doing a lot of listening.

75Todd County Board will consideroining Cass County in
raud prevention program
y Rin Porter
At the Health and Human
ervices Board meeting on May
8, commissioners heard from
HS employee Lisa Chapin that
odd County HHS wishes to join
ith Cass County HHS in a joint
raud Prevention Investigation
rogram, effective July 1.
The purpose of the program,
hapin said, would be to quicklyesolve issues of public assistance
rogram eligibility for citizens of
odd and Cass Counties.
During 2011, Todd County
HS referred 24 cases to fraud
nvestigation, and found after all
he cases were completed, that
verpayments totaling $70,000
ad been made. In addition, the
nvestigator discovered ineligible
ients and saved the county
8,494 in claims.
Joining the Frand Prevention
nvestigation Program will result
n no cost to the county. Cass
ounty is the host county for the
egional Administrative Agencyf the Minnesota Department of
uman Services, which bears the
ost of the program.
Commissioners discussed the
rogram and decided to vote on it
t the next county board meeting.
A three-year agreement
between the two counties has
been drafted, and will be present-
ed to the county board at its regu-
lar meeting on June 4. Chapin
would manage the program in
Todd County.
Also at the HHS board meet-
ing, Verna Toenyan of the Council
on Aging presented a report on
her activities during the past few
months. As part of the SeniorTransportation Program, Toenyan
has concentrated on updating vol-
unteer driver application forms,
training procedures, and hand-
book.
Toenyan also informed com-
missioners of the need for addi-
tional training for Todd County
communities on how to manage
people who have Alzheimers or
senile dementia, but who live in
the community rather than in a
locked care facility. She said that
only one community, Eagle Bend,
has received extensive training.
A recent incident occurred in
which a person with Alzheimerswandered away from where he
was supposed to be. Eagle Bend
community members searched
the area and found the person,
and took him to a safe location.
