The Albert Murphy family of Ward
ownship was one of the many
milies who came to Todd
ounty in the 1860s, 1870s, and
880s from Randolph County,
diana. Albert Murphy was the
on of Robert Murphy and
izabeth Duvall, who were both
orn in Ohio in about 1804.
oth of their families had been
the U.S. for over a hundredars. They moved to Indiana
time for Albert’s birth in
ecember 1834. Robert and
izabeth would have eight
ore children who lived.
izabeth died following the birth
her last child, a son John, in
847.
Albert Murphy, the third child
the family, married Ellen Polly,
e daughter of a doctor,
arnhill Polly, in 1857 in
andolph County. In 1860, the
S. Census shows them living
ere.
In August 1862, Albert
urphy joined Company F of e 69th Indiana Infantry, and
rved in the Civil War until he
as discharged. The unit saw
ction in the Battle of Richmond,
entucky, on August 30, 1862,
here they were captured, held, and then
released. In late November they left for
Memphis, Tennessee. They fought under
General Sherman in Mississippi for the
remainder of 1862 and most of 1863, until
November 1863 when they moved to
Texas, then Louisiana, then
back to Mississippi, then to
Florida and southern Alabama
where they remained until July
1865.
Private Albert Murphy
returned to Randolph County,
Indiana, and lived there with
his family for the next few
years. They appear on theU.S. Census of 1870.
But in the early 1870s,
they, along with many others,
left Indiana for Todd County,
Minnesota. Albert Murphy and
his wife Ellen were in
Minnesota in time for the
Minnesota State Census of
1875, where they were living
on 120 acres in Ward
Township. By 1880, they had
seven children, the oldest of
whom was Martin Murphy. A
descendant wrote on
Ancestry.com that Albert and
his family moved to Old
Hartford and was appointedpostmaster. He served in that
position until the railroad came
to Browerville and the post
office was moved there.
