“With the eyes of faith, consider the greatness of your mission and the wonderful amount of good you can accomplish. And also consider the great reward promised to those who have taught the truth to others and have helped form them to justice: ‘They will shine eternally in the skies like the stars of the heavens.’ With the hope of this glory, we must generously complete the

Lord’s work.”

when brother Ken went to rome, he brought back for us a statue of the blessed mother, which had been blessed by the pope. we still have this statue sitting on our mantel. brother Ken will forever be in our hearts

and in our home.

has been hoban to our family. it is hard for us to imag-ine that the education of our sons would have been complete without brother Ken’s unfailing commit-ment to the values of holy cross. educating hearts and minds is a meaningless concept without a leader who has the ability to inspire young men and women in that mission. brother Ken inspired our children.our time at hoban began quite by accident. our old-est son sensed that something special was present at this high school on the hill. what we came to learn was that he was right. but it wasn’t just because of academic excellence. what made hoban such a spe-cial place was brother Ken’s gift to guide our sons to a spiritual awakening. that awakening does not come from buildings or books or curriculum but from an educator who has a very special calling. to us, that educator was brother Ken. we have been blessed to

have had him as a part of our lives.

Blessed Basil Anthony Moreau, founder of the brothers, priests, and sisters of Holy Cross, was beatified on Sept. 15, 2007. The beatification oc-curred during three days of pilgrimage, prayer and celebration by members of official Holy Cross dele-gations and invited special guests.

Brother Kenneth Haders and Dr. Mary Anne Be-iting attended as representatives of Hoban.

The cause for Father Moreau’s beatification was introduced in Rome in 1955. His Holiness, John Paul II, approved his beatification in 2003, declar-ing that, as a Servant of God, Father Moreau had “practiced the thiological virtues of faith, hope and love towards God and neighbor, as well as the re-lated cardinal virtues of prudence, justice temper-

ance and fortitude, to an heroic degree.”The importance of Father Moreau in our history

as Archbishop Hoban and, moreover, as a school sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross, cannot be overstated. Without the values of Holy Cross that Father Moreau emphasized, the edu-cation that our teachers impart on our students would not be the same. Because of his focus on the Holy Cross Core Values, Hoban students are able to learn and engage in an environment that does not merely observe their intellectual achieve-ments, but more importantly the individuals that they become. Through this Holy Cross teaching, Hoban does not only develop high school students, but lifelong learners.

Basic Christian Communities (BCC) are an oppor-tunity for students to share scripture and ques-tions about their faith in small groups with fellow student and a campus minister. The groups meet once a week at lunchtime. BCC serves as an outlet for students wishing to share an intimate, prayerful experience in small communities.

Workshops, conducted by the National Coalition Building Institute, focus on recognizing diversity and training student leaders on ways to reduce prej-udice.The NCBI is an international, non-profit, lead-ership training organization based in Washington DC. Since 1984, NCBI has worked to eliminate racism and all other forms of prejudice and discrimination throughout the world. Its proactive approach be-gins with a core group of students who are taught skills to facilitate intergroup conflicts effectively.Through various activities and discussions, students express their thoughts and feelings of experiences in their lives to help each other become more aware of the differences and similarities among them. The purpose of the workshops is for groups of students to conduct school workshops so it can be an ongo-ing program.

Students pledge to uphold the Hoban Code of Hon-or–a commitment to maintain sound ethics in their academic work. A student committee made up of seniors promotes the honor code among students, parents, teachers and community. Students have the opportunity to commit or recommit to the honor code with their signatures. In 2007, student council president Kevin Contre-ra said at an Honor Code assembly, “The primary concern of the Honor Code committee was to take somehting that has been neglected and make it something that you the students embrace and make your own. It isn’t just something we sign (or forget to sign) after a test. It isn’t something you learn. It’s something you gain by practice. It’s a lifestyle and it’s ongoing.”

At a special consistory in Rome in 2010, Pope Benedict XVI announced that Holy Cross André Bessette would be canonized on Oct. 17, 2010 at the Vatican. St. André, sometimes called the “miracle man from Montreal,” is the founder of St. Joseph’s Oratory. Pilgrims from around the world have traveled to Toronto to ask for mira-cles through Brother André’s intercession. His reply to these requests was always “Ite ad Joseph” (Go to St. Joseph). The Congre-gation of Holy Cross around the world re-joiced in this momentous announcement. Over the years, Hoban has annually sent a student group on pilgrimage to St. Joseph’s Oratory in Toronto, Canada. This gives Hoban students the opportunity to meet their counterparts from other Holy Cross schools.

Celebrating Sainta

On Oct. 17, 2010, the Congregation of Holy Cross celebrated the canonization of Brother André Bessette, C.S.C., by Pope Benedict XVI. Beginning on the first anniversary of St. André’s canonization, Holy Cross invited all people to celebrate both the Congregation’s first saint and the Year of the Brother.

Mandated by the 2010 Holy Cross General Chapter, the Year of the Brother honored the brother’s vocation and the important ministry of service and compassion to the Church and the world by the brothers. It was also recognition of the important work still to be done, an invitation to others to consider offering their lives in service as a brother and an opportunity for the faithful to pray for vocations to Holy Cross.

In their religious consecration, brothers give their lives over to the Lord in service to all of God’s people. Let us give thanks for their service, compassion and prayer.

these are words that come to mind when we think of brother Ken. over the past 12 years, we have had the great blessing of getting to know brother Ken and have been so impressed at how well he knew each of our five children that went to hoban. some of our children were class leaders and captains of their sports teams, but others were more quiet and shy. honestly, brother Ken knew those quiet and shy children just as well as the outgoing ones. that was always very impressive to us, as parents. we truly believe that brother Ken knew the greatness in each one of our children and zoomed in on it. even to this day, he knows each of their names, what they are doing in their life and always makes a point to talk to each of them whenever he sees them. that is someone who truly cares about the individual. the reilly family feels blessed to have had brother Ken in their lives, and we wish him many blessings and joy

in his next endeavor.

50 years of silenceIn fall 2012, Hoban students and faculty celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Mum Day tradition as the cul-mination of Spirit Week leading up to the football game against rival St. Vincent-St. Mary. Though from 1978-1995 Mum Day was held before the Walsh Jesuit game, it has since returned to preparing the students, faculty and fans for the STVM rivalry. Mum Day, without a doubt, is a Hoban tradition unlike any other.

one hope~one dream The One Hope~One Dream award is presented to a graduate whose values, attitudes and behav-iors exemplify how to live out a dream that brings hope to others. The motto of the Congregation of Holy Cross, “Spes Unica,” refers to the “One Hope” we find in Jesus. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream of how to bring Jesus’ teachings of justice, love and peace to life in our world.

true to youFor over a half century, the students and alumni of Hoban have ended their alma mater with the words “we shall be true to you.” It is, of course, a statement of undying faithfulness to their school as well as to the generations of students who ac-complished so much during their years as a Ho-ban Knight. Being true to you is also a statement of mission and philosophy that permeates all that happens at this beloved school.Concretely, what does true to you mean? Why Hoban? How does Hoban make a difference? Ho-ban’s special culture, based on Congregation of Holy Cross core values, is one in which students feel genuinely welcome and safe to be true to themselves–to become what God calls them to be. Everything we do at Hoban is true to the needs and best interests of the students.

Since its inception 28 years ago, the Extravaganza dinner auction has raised funds to improve a multitude of Hoban projects, including numerous technology upgrades, Dowed Field light-ing, stage lighting and drapes, Barry Gymnasium bleachers and financial aid for Hoban students. In 2004, Mr. Ralph Bernard Sr. offered a $25,000 Extravaganza Challenge Scholarship Match, and since that initial gift and subsequent matching gifts each year, Extravaganza supporters have raised over $511,600 for financial aid.

and brother Ken was our front door to archbishop hoban. we were st. barnabas parishioners and the parents of an eighth grader, and to the best of our knowledge, no other st. barnabas student had ever attended hoban. it was an unknown for us. but during an open house, we watched brother Ken command the room with authenticity and sincerity. the holy cross values were obvious. he made us feel confident that our son would be in good hands. brother Ken leaves the healthy and vibrant community that is hoban. under his leadership, hoban has solidified its standing as one of the premier catholic high schools in northeast ohio. he is now, and will always be, a tireless

advocate for archbishop hoban high school.

Alternative Spring Break is an opportunity for stu-dents to engage in Christian service during spring break, a time usually dedicated to relaxing with friends for a week. The movement began in the 1980s with college students, but Hoban has adopt-ed this tradition over the past couple years, allow-ing students to experience different environments for the week. This year’s locations were Glenmary Farm and Downtown Chicago, while in the past the list has included Phoenix, Ariz., Austin, Texas, New Orleans, La., and Downtown Akron.

Justice Akron Ministry, or JAM as it is called, start-ed in the summer of 2000 with 40 area high school volunteers. This service retreat gives students the opportunity to assist the Greater Akron communi-ty at various social service agencies. By summer of 2007 a waiting list began after nearly 200 Hoban students registered. JAM is not service at a dis-tance. It is a hands-on program, reflecting Matthew 25, which tells us to work directly with the disad-vantaged and differently-abled.

Project HOPE was begun by Hoban faculty Greg Milo and Jason Horinger with the intention of bringing assistance to the homeless residents of Akron. Every Wednesday night students and facul-ty prepare food and venture into Downtown Akron to both experience the epidemic of homelessness up close as well as serve their less fortunate friends. Project HOPE has been blessed with many gener-ous donations of food and money from the Hoban community, which have allowed them to be better able to serve all the people they may encounter.

Hoban has partnered with the Congregation of Holy Cross in Ghana, West Africa, where student groups engage in an immersion experience within the Ghanaian culture. While students are hosted by the Holy Cross Brothers, they are able to learn more about Ghanaian art, music and dance, as well as visit historical sites within the country and as-sist in local elementary schools. The program has sent two groups of students since its inception in 2009.

on brother Ken’s accomplishments as president of arch-bishop hoban high school and it would still not do him justice. but i will try. when brother Ken arrived at hoban, and i was treasurer of the school board, i commented “brother Ken, i am very proud of my and my family’s holy cross education, but i am also happy the Jesuits taught me accounting.” let’s just say, largely because of brother Ken’s leadership and commitment, he proved my comment wrong. brother Ken is, in my opinion, the reason hoban is the most financially viable catholic high school in summit county. we give more financial aid than any other school, we produce more national merit scholars than any other school, and most importantly, the kids that graduate from our school are first rate. there is a direct correlation be-tween all of our success stories and br. Ken’s leadership. i am very humbled that brother Ken considers me a friend.

Hoban was named a winner of the Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School Award in 2006. Hoban was among 30 schools nationwide and the only school in Ohio to be recognized.

The award was in recognition of best practices submitted by Hoban’s math de-partment. Blue Ribbon Lighthouse Schools focus on locating successful programs and best practices that work in education. These schools then serve as a marker for schools that desire to be high performing beacons for our nation’s educational culture.

In 2007 Hoban was recognized by ACT, the national testing board, for its high-quality, rigorous core curriculum in math and science. It was the only Catholic school in Summit County and one of only two in the Diocese of Cleveland to be recognized.

In 2005-06, Visor was awarded the Gold Medalist Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and awards from the Quill and Scroll Society and the National Scholastic Press Association.

since 2000, the national merit scholarship corporation program has recognized 157 hoban seniors for outstanding academic achievement on the preliminary sat / national merit scholarship qualifying test.

Nominated by the Council for Ameri-can Private Education, Hoban received the award in 1997-98 school year following a review by a national panel of 100 public and private school educa-tors. Hoban was one of 14 schools in Ohio to receive this award and the only one in Summit County.

hoban technology through the yearsIn 1997 Hoban announced a plan to install 54 worksta-

tions, allowing interconnection throughout the school. Students would have access to 30 workstations in a new computer lab on the third floor next to the library. The library had four additional computers. The workstations are connected through a network created from two hub rooms, where servers are located.

Rewiring the school allowed the capability of a net-worked system for students and staff to share files and printers. It also gave the school the opportunity to com-municate outside the building electronically through the Internet and email.

Over the years, technology at Hoban has dramatical-ly advanced, including the addition of computers and large-screen presentation monitors in every classroom. Hoban has also afforded students the use of 30 mobile laptops that can be used throughout the building on the

wireless network, bringing the total number of comput-ers available to students to 165.

This past year, Hoban housed 115 iPads, which includ-ed all teachers and administration, as well as a cart of 40 for student use in the classroom. The building now con-tains three computer labs: two with PCs and one with Mac computers. Over 50 SmartBoards, 2 Apple TVs, 78 Mac computers, 107 laptops, and 163 PCs now reside in Hoban.

Beginning in the fall of 2013, Hoban will be imple-menting a 1:1 iPad program for students, beginning with freshmen and sophomores. Over 560 iPads will be distributed to these students. The move to iPads will in-clude the adoption of several digital textbooks and ap-plications necessary for technological success in and out of the classroom.

has always been a man who lives his faith and commit-ment to Jesus christ and the gospel in all he says and does. his love and dedication to his wonderful parents and family, as well as to his holy cross family and the hoban family, has always been something that has con-tinually impressed us. his firm, fair and kind approach to school administration, as he interacted with stu-dents, parents and friends of hoban, is a rare gift that he shows to all of us. as our opportunities to work with him at hoban have grown over the years with our chil-dren as students and the two of us as supporters and volunteers, we feel blessed to be able to consider him a friend. we will miss him in many ways and will pray for success and happiness in all his future endeavors. to paraphrase titus 2:7-8 “he is in all respects a model of good works, and in his teaching shows integrity, dig-nity and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent, may have nothing evil to say about

knights pantastic Hoban is home to two steel drum bands: the be-ginners band, composed mostly of freshmen, and the Knights Pantastic, those in at least their second year of membership in the group. Each of these bands performs for school assemblies, other performances around town, as well as the Ohio Music Education Association Solo and Ensemble Contest. Most recent-ly, the Knights Pantastic had the opportunity to per-form with legendary entertainer Harry Belafonte at the Akron Civic Theatre. The award-winning Pantas-tics also went on tour in Chicago, Ill., and South Bend, Ind., this past February. The group has been awarded the highest honors at the Ohio Music Educators Adju-dications for the last five years.

Hoban students formed the drum line during the 2010-11 school year to perform at sporting and so-cial events. The line includes several styles of drums. At home football games, the drum line can be seen leading the student section and cheerleaders with their beats. They also perform halftime shows for the entire fan section.

The performing arts at Hoban have flourished over the past years, gathering record numbers of students into the fall plays and spring musicals. The Hoban Trouba-dours, Hoban’s award-winning drama club, have most recently brought to life such tales as Dead Man Walk-ing, Les Miserables, Into the Woods, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and several others. The Troubadours have been recognized as a Gold Honor Troupe by the Ohio Educational Theatre Association.

The fine arts curriculum is designed to encourage and develop the students’ skills and personal growth in the arts. The fine arts club, for those students who want a broader view of art in every form, has two art shows every year, in which students’ works are placed on display for parents and alumni. The club has traveled to Chi-cago, Toronto and New York to tour art museums, and it annually creates an advent banner for Lock 3 in Downtown Akron.

The mock trial program is one of the most successful clubs at Hoban. Since 1984, Hoban has appeared in the state mock tri-al competition 24 times, capturing the title three times (1994, 2006, 2011). The Ohio Mock Trial Program is the second-largest program in the country, behind California. This past year, Ho-ban sent two teams to the state competition; Team Powell made it to the round of eight teams and Team Kagan reached the final four before facing elimination. In 2011, Team Thomas captured the state title and went on to compete at the national competi-tion, where they placed 19th in the country.

Revolutionary War Living History Day, headed by history teacher Jason Anderson, allows students from local elementary schools to be immersed in the year 1776 and relive the experiences that soldiers in the Revolutionary War would have experienced. Thanks to the generosity of the GAR Foundation and faculty and students of Hoban, it has been possible for the event to return to Hoban for two years. This past year Hoban played host to over 1,000 kids who attended the day-long event. Throughout the day, students can learn about mathematics, art, science and economics used colonial America, and they can also step inside an officer’s quarters, complete with all necessary items for the battlefield.

i tried to find a word that best described broth-er Ken, and though there are many attributes that could be mentioned, i got my answer when i thought of something ralph bernard’s son (ralph bernard Jr. '62) said at the annual extravaganza. he said brother Ken was an example of a true “professional.” i believe this hits the mark. broth-er Ken is a professional as a brother of holy cross, president, administrator and leader, most nota-bly in his ability to handle students in a way that allows him to keep control without seeming de-meaning. we will greatly miss our pro. may god

bless his future endeavors.

thank you for the 17 years we have shared as partners in leadership at hoban. whether working on a project here at home or visiting a faraway place, you guided me as we sought the best ways to build on hoban’s strong traditions and holy cross core values, enjoy the blessings of the present, and plan for the future needs of our students. your mentorship has helped me un-derstand what it takes to lead a holy cross school. your friendship has nurtured me . your example will live in my heart each day as i continue the journey. my family has been blessed because you have been a part of our lives. may the road rise to meet you and the wind be always at your back as you enter your next

adventures. may god bless you always.

hoban foreverThe Hoban Forever campaign raised over $3.6

million in cash donations and pledges and $2.5 million in deferred gifts. The campaign began in Nov. 2000 and was celebrated May 2002 with the dedication of the visual arts center. The focus of the campaign was to provide ongoing funds in four key areas: endow faculty compensation and professional development fund, endow financial assistance for need-based financial aid, maintain and improve the physical plant, and fund many techonological improvements.A part of the campaign was a GAR Foundation

Challenge grant of $325,000 for endowment.

hoban 2000The Hoban 2000 campaign, which reached its

completion under Brother Ken’s watch, created a real renaissance for the school. The facility be-came attractive and effective with the addition of the golden dome and the sense of campus afford-ed by the elimination of the houses along Fifth Avenue. Hoban changed its address from 400 El-bon Ave. to One Holy Cross Blvd. during the sum-mer of 2001. Property that was owned by Hoban was turned into the upper parking lot and a new entrance configuration was developed, allowing the street to be renamed.

The Associates of St. Joseph began as a group for parents of Holy Cross Brothers. It expanded to include parents of students. Today most of its members are parents of graduates who want to stay connected to Hoban.

They are the friendly faces behind the conces-sion stand counter at sporting events. They ap-preciate and respect the Brothers of Holy Cross and all they have done for Hoban High. They are past parents, current parents and grandparents.

People like Doris Schubert who joined the As-sociates in the early '60s when her husband Don was a teacher at Hoban before her seven children had started at Hoban. She has been a member ever since.

It was in the late '60s that Schubert and Broth-er Paul Kelly talked about running the conces-sion stands for fund-raising. “This turned out to be a great fundraiser for Hoban. You could be in the midst of the excitement at a Hoban game yet be helping to raise money for the school at the same time,” Schubert said.

People like Nick Rozumny, who for 30 years has organized the concession stand, ordering sup-plies, waiting for deliveries, maintaining impe-cable records and operating the stand for every sporting event held on the grounds of Hoban.

Fund-raisers have supported many projects over the years. In the late '60s, the Associates began operating Hoban’s concession stands. The school’s academic trophy cases in the main hall were provided with funds through the Associ-ates of St. Joseph. The group also contributed to purchasing band uniforms in 2001-02, portable bleachers in the athletic complex, trophy cases in the Nolan Concourse, the Hoban 2000 building campaign, Holy Cross missions in Ghana and the statue of St. Joseph on the promenade.

Hoban strives to be a good neighbor to the East Akron community. Hoban was the recipient of Ak-ron’s 2001 Beautification Watch Award. The “Keep Akron Beautiful” award, established in 1983, rec-ognizes individuals, organizations and businesses that consistently work to keep their property clean and beautiful with well-maintained landscaping.

Brother Ken has helped revitalize the spiritual service done by Ho-ban students through his dedication to the East Akron Community House. This organization, which strives to make the Greater Akron community a more welcome and inviting place in which to live, partnered with Brother Ken and the Board of Hoban during the revi-talization of our campus and surrounding neighborhood since the 1990s. Students are still able to serve others from the neighborhood at the Community House, where Hoban campus ministry serves hot meals on Mondays.

hoban without brother Ken. our children, especial-ly the last one, have ‘grown up’ with hoban and with brother Ken. his hands-on approach as an adminis-trator, his pushing and prodding and suggesting to get the best out of each and every student (whether they want to give it or not), his knowledge of the ho-ban community, and his untiring desire to make arch-bishop hoban high school a better place—all of this

will be deeply missed.

to a comma. years ago, after the latest hoban high-lights had come out, i waited for some comment from brother Ken. it had been an issue i had fun putting to-gether and others had said they enjoyed it. but i need-ed to hear something from my “boss.” he walked into my office and placed a copy on my desk and pointed to a caption under a photo on page 20-something and said, “you could have used a comma here.” he got up and walked out to my “are you kidding me?” he turned and smiled and left me to think. what was it that he wanted? perfection? yes, he wanted and strove for perfection. in every project we worked on together, that has been our goal. not for our own boastful pride but because it was for hoban.

brother Ken has done for me in my career what he has done for countless others—faculty, staff, students and friends--challenged me to strive to be the best i can be. he just wanted me to be “more better.”

brother Ken, thank you for the interest you have had in my family and our four children, being a champi-on of the underdog, your mentorship, your passion to share our holy cross values, your friendship. but most of all for the commas in life, because really, what's

wrong with perfection?

and remember it so vividly. i was walking in front of the central office my senior year in the spring of 2003 when brother Ken pulled me aside. he was curious about my plans for college and we struck up a conversation. i told him i was deciding between John carroll and Kent state. what we talked about next helped guide me into mak-ing a decision that has profoundly affected my life in so many wonderful ways. his insight and nudge to go a little further in my search opened me up to the opportunities available to me and ultimately took me to st. edward’s university in austin, texas. not at all what i envisioned or thought possible, but it was brother Ken who, even though i didn’t know it at the time, was showing me di-vine providence was working in my life at that time and always.

from that moment i knew that brother Ken, in the sim-plest way to explain, just got it. he knew what the expe-rience was like, he wasn’t full of words and cliche anec-dotes. he was a part of my life journey and has been a part of so many others during his years at hoban.

his impact on the hoban family is seen in so many physical ways. for me, where his impact is felt the most is in the intangible, invisible ways. whether is it fostering students faith lives and promoting religious vocations, giving students the word of encouragement or insight they need at the right time, or by fostering a community of diversity and acceptance in the holy cross tradition,

brother Ken is leaving a legacy that is immeasurable.
