Abraham on Monasticism Brother Abraham Newsom has been a monk at St. Gregory’s Abbey (an Episcopal Benedictine Monastery near Three Rivers, Michigan) for 17 years. He is a native of San Angelo, Texas, and grew up in Dallas, where he graduated from W. T. White High School. He has a bachelor’s degree from Angelo State University and a master’s degree from Texas Tech University. Before coming to the monastery, Br. Abraham was a school teacher in Marfa and Knox City. He has led retreats and quiet days in various parts of the country. He was the monastery cook and gardener for 14 years, and now works in the publications and business office producing the abbey calendar and the ABBEY LETTER (the monastery’s quarterly newsletter), as well as keeping track of the newsletter mailing list of over 21,000 names. In his free time at the abbey, Br. Abraham enjoys long distance bicycling, listening to and writing music, reading science fiction, and watching Indy Car races.
