Maintaining the functionality ofelectrical systems

The maintenance of the electrical supply is required inany structure in which large numbers of people con-gregate, for example, hospitals, hotels, undergroundrailway systems or tunnels. The maintenance of elec-trical functionality exists when the current flow is notinterrupted during a fire. This allows, for example, emergency lighting, ventilation and fire alarm systemsto continue working and emergency and escaperoutes to remain usable. The longer these technicalsystems work, the greater the chances of rescue.

A key component in the installation of systems thatmaintain the electrical functionality  is the connectionand branching of safety cables in appropriate junctionboxes. OBO Bettermann developed the FireBox forthis purpose. As with all the OBO systems for theelectrical installation of cable systems  that maintainthe electrical function, the FireBox is tested accordingto DIN 4102 Part 12. As a part of the systems thatmaintain the electrical functionality, it helps to ensurethat safety-relevant systems function reliably over adefined period of time in the event of fire.

30 minutes: Maintenance of the electrical functional-ity for safe evacuation and rescue

The first 30 minutes after the start of a fire play an im-portant role in the evacuation of a building. During thisperiod, OBO systems for the maintenance of electricalfunctionality E30 maintain the flow of energy for:

• Emergency lighting• Lifts with fire control• Fire alarm systems• Alarm systems and acoustic systems• Natural smoke extraction systems

60/90 minutes: Maintenance of the electrical func-tion for fire-fighting

To support fire-fighting operations, it is imperative thatcertain technical equipment is supplied with power forup to 90 minutes after a fire breaks out. For example,OBO systems for the maintenance of  electricalfunction E60 and E90 ensure:

• Pressure increase systems for fire water supply• Mechanical smoke extraction systems• Smoke protection pressure systems• Fire brigade lifts• Emergency power supply systems

How to maintain electrical func-tionality

If fire alarm systems are installed in the building, it ispossible to waive cabling that maintains the electricalfunctionality class E30 in certain areas. These include, for example, branch cables to fire alarms located in afire section. Here, routing of E30 cables to the first firealarm is sufficient. If the fire alarm system was createdwith loop technology, then no E30 safety cables at allare required. If cables fail during a fire, the system de-tects interruptions and automatically switches the sig-nal paths.

If cables of the fire alarm system are run through mon-itored areas into a final fire section, then there is noneed for E30 cabling. If the bridged fire sections arenot monitored, then safety cables with maintenance ofelectrical functionality class E30 must be installed.

The exceptions described above have no influence onthe supply of safety-relevant electrical systems withthe maintenance of electrical functionality classes E60and E90. The higher-level classes must be given theappropriate safety cables.

FireBox connection technology

Junction boxes of the FireBox series are available forconnecting and branching safety cables. The heart ofthe FireBox is the high temperature-resistant ceramicconnection terminal. The housing of the terminal blockis made of ceramic materials. It is the basis for a se-cure mechanical and electrical connection. In combin-ation with the thermoplastic housing, the ceramic con-nection terminal forms a system with fire protectiontesting. The connection unit offers clamping rangesfrom 0.5 mm² to 16 mm² copper cross-section. Boxeswith soft plug-in seals or closed variants are available.

The protective conductor terminal is connected to thesupport clamp, meaning that covers of the metal partsare not required. The FireBox is tested and approvedas a connection socket for maintenance of electricalfunctionality to DIN 4102 Part 12 with the classesE30, E60 and E90. A separate fuse holder allows pro-tection of a branch.

Variousmaterial properties

The FireBox stands out through a range of positivematerial properties, which make it particularly robustand reduce damage to people and property to a min-imum in the event of fire.

The FireBox:

Has a protection rating up to IP66

Impact resistance to IK10

Made of halogen-free thermoplastic

Connection unit made of high temperature-res-istant ceramic

The IP protection rating accordingto DIN EN 60529 (VDE 0470 Part1) specifies how far a componentis protected against contact andforeign bodies and the ingress ofwater. The IP66 protection ratingmeans, on the one hand, that dan-gerous parts in the distributor boxare not accessible with a wire andthat the FireBox is dust-proof. Onthe other, the box guarantees pro-tection against strong water jets.

The IK code to DIN EN 50102 in-dicates the protection rating ofhousings against external mechan-ical loads. It is made up of thecode letters IK and a two-digitnumber from 00 to 10. Eachgroup of numbers stands for aload energy value in joules (J). TheIK code always applies to the com-plete housing, which guaranteesthe protection of resources againstthe damaging effects of mechanic-al loads. The housings are testedby knocking them with differenttesting hammers.

Approximately 95% of all deaths duringfires are caused by smoke poisoning!

Halogen freedomEstimates suggest that around 95% of fire victims dienot due to the immediate effects of the fire, but ofpoisoning from the smoke. In addition, the corrosivefire gases created during fires cause immense dam-age to property and can permanently damage thestructure of a building. Therefore, halogen-free install-ation systems should or must always be used in pub-lic areas (emergency routes, lifts, etc.).

The chemical composition of these halogen-free sys-tems is designed in such a way that, in the case offire, they produce less hazardous (toxic/corrosive)gases, which could combine with extinguishingagents to form hydrochloric acid. In the sense of the

standard DIN VDE 0472, this means that materialsare considered halogen-free when "the proportions ofthe halogens chlorine, bromine and iodine are ≤ 0.2%for chlorine and ≤ 0.1% for fluorine". OBO Bettermannoffers a wide range of halogen-free products that re-duce the risk of harm to people and property to aminimum in case of fire.

Thermoplastics are plastics that can be shaped withina specific temperature range. This process is revers-ible, in other words, thermoplastics can theoreticallybe cooled and then melted down again any numberof times. Another unique advantage of thermoplasticsis that they can be welded.

Mounting options

There are various fastening options available (internaland external fastening) for the FireBox, which all en-sure a secure hold. An anchor suitable for the sub-strate must be used for mounting. In addition, a spe-cial angled mounting plate, stiffened through beading, means that fastening on cable trays is possible. Theinternal fastening takes place with suitable anchorswith fire protection approval directly through the boxbody. In the case of external fastening, the anchoringis created through the external straps of a pre-moun-ted steel panel in the substrate.

Mounting directly on cable trays is suitable for safe in-stallation of cables that maintain electrical functional-ity. Here, cables can be run into and out of the box inan uncomplicated manner and need not be bent overthe side rail. The scope of delivery of the FireBox forinternal and external fastening contains two fire pro-tection anchors for fire protection fastening in con-crete or masonry.

Besides the different options for installing the FireBox,cable insertion with different methods is also possible.Cables can be inserted or run out through elasticplug-in seals, which are already pre-mounted on theFireBox. The soft seals adjust themselves to the cablein a flexible manner and make it dust-proof and water-proof. In combination with the closed FireBox, cablescan also be installed with a robust cable gland. The V-TEC cable gland offers high torsion protection overthe entire clamping range, a high tightness level andstrain relief and is available in the sizes M16 and M40in a set with the matching locknut.

Fire testOBO FireBox

There can be no compromises with fire protection: Inan emergency, every product used must function ab-solutely reliably and also comply with legal and con-struction regulations. As an OBO customer, you canrely on tested quality. Our fire protection experts sub-ject every newly developed product to comprehensivetests in accredited testing institutes. In doing so, weorientate ourselves to national and international testingstandards.

Independent testers inspect the results and assign theappropriate proofs of suitability, such as approvals, evaluations or test certificates, to our products. In thedownload area at www.obo-bettermann.com, you canview and download all the fire protection certificates ofour products.

We like to make every effort when conducting our firetests! When we test our cable support systems thatmaintain the electrical supply in a fire, we test the en-tire cable system, consisting of the routing systemsand cables with the integrated function of maintainingthe supply of electricity.

We subject the entire system to a practical test in afire and test whether our products can withstand thetemperatures of up to 1,000 °C. Often, we even carryout such fire tests in the development phase of aproduct. The results are then taken into account whenfurther developing the product. In the end, we haveabsolutely safe and practical solutions, which meetthe requirements of the market.
