Welcome to Broomfield South Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre

Broomfield South SILC is an all-age generic special school for 211 pupils serving the whole south of Leeds. ‘SILC’ stands for ‘Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre’, meaning we are more than just a special school – we have partnerships with a primary and secondary school and offer support for special needs within our community. We offer an inclusive setting operating on the main Broomfield site and two mainstream partnership sites at Windmill Primary School and The Rodillian Academy. This enables us to meet a wide variety of our pupils’ and young people’s needs. This handbook has been compiled to provide you with the necessary information about Broomfield’s procedures, organisation and key policies. Its purpose is to provide employees and volunteers with information how the school operates and to enhance the working environment. All staff should ensure they have read the handbook and follow the procedures set out in it. This handbook, whilst not definitive, is designed to support all staff, volunteers and students who are new to the SILC Further details of the SILC policies are published on the Broomfield website and on the SILC network.

If any of this information is unclear, or if we have missed out anything that you feel you need to know; please do not hesitate to ask any senior leader or current member of staff. We are all here to help each other and all members of staff will be more than happy to deal with any questions or queries that you may have. Please do not feel any question is too trivial. What you tell or ask us will enable us to improve this Staff Handbook for future colleagues and visitors.

We hope your time at Broomfield will be a happy, rewarding time of learning for both you and for our pupils.

Awards Broomfield is proud to have achieved the following awards and standards; Investors in Pupils Healthy Schools Standard Investors in People Standard – Gold Active PE Mark- Gold standard

Behaviour Management Broomfield operates a positive behaviour management policy At Broomfield South SILC we aim to promote an ethos of respect, understanding and support amongst our pupils and staff. We expect good behaviour and try to help pupils feel good about themselves. To help us do this we need to foster a consistent approach from all staff, identifying clearly what our expectations are, and how we should respond when behaviour falls below our expectations. We use an online, confidential database and analysis tool called Sleuth to record both positive and negative behaviours, and our responses to these behaviours. Over time this allows us to build an accurate picture of patterns of behaviour, identify likely causes of negative behaviour so we can try to minimise these, and look at our responses to behaviour to make sure we are consistently promoting the positives, whilst reducing negative behaviours. Teachers are expected to write, maintain and review behaviour strategies and PHP’s (where appropriate) for pupils in their class who display challenging behaviours and consult with support staff, parents and outside agencies regarding behaviour strategies. In addition, they should provide and communicate up to date behaviour strategies for pupils in their class in staff meetings and briefings. There is a whole school assembly every Friday afternoon where achievements are celebrated including our ‘Quality Moments ‘where staff and pupils are invited to share and celebrate particularly outstanding aspects of for example, caring, friendship, kindness and helpfulness. Staff must make themselves familiar with the Behaviour Management policy which is in the school website, network and copies of which are placed in the staffroom. The policy is also part of a range of key policies, including Child Protection, which form part of the mandatory annual training for staff. See also ‘Care and Control’ Capability Procedures Broomfield is committed to maintaining the highest standards for our pupils and young people. Where there are concerns about your work, school will follow the Capability procedures as laid out in the policy which is available on the school network.

Page 17: BROOMFIELD SOUTH SPECIALIST INCLUSIVE LEARNING CENTRE

17

Car Parking and School Transport Staff are expected to park inside the school grounds and not on the main road which may cause obstruction for our neighbours. Please ensure cars are parked in the marked bays and the designated disabled parking space at the front of the building is left free for those requiring the facility. Please be aware that the school gates will be closed between 8.45 and 9.15 and again at 2.45 until 3.15, in order that school transport has access and to ensure the safety of our pupils. The movement of any other vehicles either in or out of the building is prohibited during these times. Should any visitor or school transport arrive after these times, they will be asked to wait outside school until all the transport and pupils have safely left the building. Staff, escorts and drivers are prohibited from parking on the main road and walking pupils into school. Please challenge anyone you see who carries out this practice. Care and Control On rare occasions it may be necessary to restrain a pupil. Staff are trained in Positive Handling or ‘Team Teach’ which is a nationally recognised system of managing, and supporting behaviour interventions. It has been adopted by many education and health authorities across the UK. The focus is on using de-escalation skills and applying physical intervention only where absolutely necessary. No child or young person should be restrained unless it is the only practicable means of securing the welfare of that child or any other child and there are exceptional circumstances. The restraint should be reasonable and proportionate, using the minimum force for the shortest time needed to prevent harm. Only staff who have an up to date certificate of competency will be able to use Team Teach. Staff new to school, where appropriate to their role, will be given training. Pupils who may require restraint must have an up to date Personal Handling Plan and Risk Assessment which ideally should be devised, agreed with and signed by the parents/carers. It is vital that all records of any physical restraint are kept up to date, parents/carers are informed and an entry is made on Sleuth, completed as soon as possible after the event. This is required by law. Staff should also be de- briefed either within their team, with their Line Manager or a colleague. All staff should make themselves aware of the Care and Control policy which is available on the school website and school network. There are additional copies in the staffroom on the main site and all partnership sites have a DVD containing the key policies. The policy clearly sets out the circumstances under which restraint can be used School has 2 qualified Team Teach tutors who provide training both in school and citywide; Dawn Bennett (based at Rodillian) and Ann- Marie Thornton based at the main site.

Child Protection At Broomfield South SILC we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all pupils. All staff and visitors have an important and unique role to play in child protection and are expected to follow our safeguarding procedures and protocols.

The designated staff for Child Protection are ; Beverley Newstead (Females) and Will Hudders (Males). Along with the Principal, they are responsible for co-ordinating all child protection activity. Sharon Crowther is the Designated Staff for the school play scheme. For full details of the role of the Designated Staff, (see Composite File Section 7.10) Our named designated officer on the senior leadership team with lead responsibility and management/oversight/accountability for child protection is John Fryer. The Nominated Governor for child protection at the school is Martin Bartholomew Where the school has concerns about a pupil, the Designated Staff will decide what steps should be taken and should advise the principal/senior designated lead officer as appropriate. Child Protection information will be dealt with in a confidential manner. A written record will be made of what information has been shared with whom, and when. School uses ‘CPOMS’ to record conerns.Staff will be informed of relevant details only when the Designated Staff feels their having knowledge of a situation will improve their ability to deal with an individual pupil and /or family. Anyone who has a concern regarding pupils must follow the school’s policy and report their concerns to the designated staff. Do not discuss your concerns with anyone else. Any concerns regarding a member of staff must be reported to the Principal, or a school governor in the case of the Principal. All staff should make themselves aware of the Child Protection policy which is available on the school website and school network. There are additional copies in the staffroom on the main site and all partnership sites have a DVD containing the key policies. Staff are required to sign to confirm they have read and understand the policy. Complaints Should any stakeholder or visitor have a complaint about the school, please speak to the Principal or Deputy Principal in the first instance. A copy of our Complaints policy and procedure is available from the school office and on the school website. Curriculum

Broomfield has a multi – faceted curriculum to meet the needs of all its learners. The South SILC is committed to providing a personalised, broad, balanced and relevant curriculum which improves learning outcomes for pupils.

Pupils in the Primary and Secondary departments follow the Early Years Foundation Stage, semi- formal curriculum and the National Curriculum, and use specifically designed schemes of work, differentiated to meet individual needs. Most subjects are delivered in pastoral groups, with the exception of English, Science, PE and Mathematics which are taught in ability groups within the

Page 19: BROOMFIELD SOUTH SPECIALIST INCLUSIVE LEARNING CENTRE

19

secondary department. In accordance with Statutory Guidance, Careers Education is delivered from the start of Year 9.

When pupils enter Year 10 they begin to follow Vocational and Work Related Learning modules as well as other National Curriculum subjects. Some pupils participate in work experience placements, and may attend college courses.

At Post 16 the curriculum focuses directly on promoting independence, and preparing for life outside school. To facilitate this, students follow Foundation Learning and accredited modules of work in key skills and topics of specific interest such as Environmental Studies, or Accessing the Local Community as well as vocational college courses and work related learning.

Pupils have personal outcomes based on targets from their EHCP’s and current assessment levels

Staff are expected to meet the deadlines set for the writing of Medium Term Plans for the classes they teach .Staff are issued with guidelines for the writing of plans and the deadlines appear in the staff planners and on the school timeline.

The Curriculum, Long Term Plans and Schemes of Work can be found in the’ School ‘& ‘Curriculum’ drives on the school network .Staff are encouraged to plan together within teams.

Collective Worship

There are departmental assemblies throughout the week and a whole school celebration assembly every Friday afternoon at 2.30pm.when a wide range of religious, cultural and social issues are addressed. Local, National and Global news is also shared with the pupils.

Parents may withdraw their child from all or part of R.E. and/or collective worship.

Cleaning

In order that the cleaning staff can do their job each evening, please ensure that your classroom floor is free of material such as tissue, equipment etc. Although the cleaning staff are responsible for the cleanliness of the classrooms, they are not expected to clear up after staff. Please leave your classroom in such a state that they can easily move around the room to clean.

Please encourage pupils to keep their classroom tidy .Each week a representative from the Schools’ Council and the school Superintendent awards the ‘Tidy Teddy / Trophy’ to the tidiest classroom in school. Please do not keep any food in classrooms.

Communication with parents and carers

We consider communication with parents and carers a vital part of the work at Broomfield. All pupils have a Home / School diary in which positive comments and any messages to and from school of a general nature are to be recorded.

Any other communication with parents should be written on school headed paper and sent home in a sealed envelope. Please keep a record of any conversations you may have with parents or carers on the appropriate form available on the school network.

School has an ‘open door’ policy regarding parents and carers although we do ask that appointments are made prior to arrival. We hold regular coffee mornings and parents are encouraged to attend special events and assemblies.

Page 20: BROOMFIELD SOUTH SPECIALIST INCLUSIVE LEARNING CENTRE

20

Parents and carers are required to read and sign our ‘Home School Agreement’ document on admission to the school.

Confidentiality We need to strike a balance between ensuring the safety, well-being and protection of our pupils and staff, ensuring there is an ethos of trust where pupils and staff can ask for help when they need it, and ensuring that good practice is followed when it is essential to share personal information and child protection issues. We expect staff to have an awareness and high regard for the confidential, sensitive and important nature of their role and will be mindful of this at all times including formal and informal discussions with parents, other members of staff, pupils and the wider school community. Particular attention should be paid in public areas of the school such as corridors, the playground and the staff room. A “needs to know” approach should be adopted to safeguard this principle and to ensure no pupil or group of pupils is unfairly stereotyped or unnecessarily spotlighted. Where possible no names should be explicitly mentioned whether for positive, negative or information purposes in public areas, unless it is on a needs to know basis for all present to hear. Staff should avoid being ‘drawn’ into discussions which relate to school matters or matters regarding an individual child, group of children or their families. If there are any concerns in this matter please refer them to the Principal or governors. Details relating to our pupils and young people are confidential and should only be shared with staff, as part of their professional role or with the parents/guardians of the pupil in question. Please respect our pupils’ privacy and be mindful of not discussing our pupils outside of school under any circumstances. Please be aware that we cannot promise absolute confidentiality to pupils and staff. Continuous Professional Development The school is firmly committed to high quality CPD for all staff to enable them to develop and carry out their role in school. Training is linked to the School Improvement Plan and Performance Management. There is a system of applying for courses and the application forms can be found in the grey cabinet in the staffroom .Off-site staff have copies of this document. Fire and Emergency evacuation procedures

Broomfield has an emergency evacuation plan which is similar to the Fire Evacuation procedures. Staff will be advised by Leadership if and when the school needs to be evacuated.

Every classroom and key location in school has a Fire Emergency Evacuation Plan. In the event of the Fire alarm alert, please assist your pupils to evacuate and make your way to the nearest exit and assembly point which is to the rear of the main playground.

Please do not stop to collect any belongings, or return to the building unless told to do so by the Leadership Team.

If you discover a fire, please alert other staff by either informing the Leadership Team, office staff or breaking the glass on an alarm point. If possible, and you have had the training, you may attempt to put a small fire out by using the Fire Extinguishers which are located at various points on the precinct and around school.

There will be a practice Fire Drill once per term which will be recorded by the Superintendent and Bursar. Testing of the alarm bells will be undertaken weekly.

Should you require additional assistance in the event of an emergency evacuation, please let your needs be known to the office staff in order that arrangements can be made to meet your requirements.

Pupils who require additional assistance should have a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) completed and signed by the parents or carers. A template is available on the school network in the ‘Staff’ drive.

A number of staff are trained Fire Wardens and will assist in evacuation in the event of an emergency.

Homework refers to any work or activity which pupils are asked to do outside lesson time, either on their own or with parents or carers. Due to the extreme diversity of need amongst our pupils, it would not be appropriate to state a set amount of time or specify the exact type of homework for pupils at certain ages. Furthermore, it is recognised that our pupils need considerable help and encouragement from adults, whether at home or at school, in order for them to complete tasks and succeed. However, teachers and parents do have a number of opportunities to further pupil’s learning within the home environment.

For further information, please refer to our ‘Homework ‘policy on the school network in the ‘Policy’ drive.

Moving and Handling

All staff are required to complete their moving and handling training before assisting with the movement of physically dependent pupils. Injuries can occur if moving and handling procedures are not followed and it is important that each move is achieved with the minimum of effort to staff while moving the object safely or giving the pupil a safe and comfortable transition.

Staff handling and moving pupils who are physically dependent should follow the principles given in their moving and handling training, adhere to pupil risk assessments and consider the safest way to complete each move.

Hoists and other moving and handling equipment are available for use and for many of our pupils hoists should be used for all transfers.

Individual risk assessments give details of how each pupil should be moved and the size and types of equipment to be used with that pupil. Staff should ask for the risk assessment to be reviewed if there is a change in the pupil’s needs or equipment used or if they feel the pupil should be moved in a different way.

Moving and Handling Training is delivered annually via our physiotherapy service and in- house trained staff.Staff should be aware of the Moving and Handling Policy available on the school network.

Residentials

We offer our pupils extended residential experiences to a number of carefully selected venues. Each venue is chosen with the specific needs of our pupils in mind.

Currently we provide three contrasting annual residential experiences: Lineham Farm, which is quite close to school and is particularly suited to pupils who may be experiencing their first stay away from home; Condover Hall and Herd Farm, Eccup which provides a range of outdoor activities and visits for our secondary age pupils, and The Wingate Centre near Nantwich in Cheshire which caters for our older pupils.

All sites are secure and most have facilities for pupils with a physical disability. These activities are hugely popular and serve to forge excellent relationships between staff and pupils. Staff participation on a residential is on a voluntary basis .Please let us know if you are interested in joining in on them.

Presentation – School and classroom

The school and classrooms are a source of pride and should reflect the ethos of the school and pupils work. Classroom environments are very important communicators of school values and expectations, and a high regard should be given by all staff to ensuring that rooms and shared spaces are tidy, attractive and clutter free. Each week the school ‘Tidy Trophy’ is awarded to the class with the tidiest classroom by the School Council representatives, the Superintendent and cleaning staff.

The quality of displays forms a non-verbal statement about the ethos of the school, the importance it places on a quality learning experiences and the value of pupils’ work.

Displays can inform and stimulate prompt inquiry, celebrate achievement and model high expectations.

Displays should be changed at least termly and should be interactive, have the class name, a description of the activity and learning outcomes. All staff should read and comply with the ‘Classroom Presentation’ requirements

Volunteers and Students on Placement

Broomfield has a long history of welcoming volunteers from the community and students from various establishments such as local high school and universities. Students and volunteers will receive an introductory pack consisting of this handbook and a school prospectus. Initially, our two lead LSA’s will co-ordinate their placement and familiarise them with the working environment.

The volunteers and students will work under the direction of a class teacher or other appropriate member of staff. Volunteers should never be left alone with pupils or allowed to take pupils out of the school building by themselves. If there are any concerns about a volunteer or student, the lead LSA who co-ordinated the placement must be informed.

Students and volunteers will be made aware of our key policies.

Please refer to our’ Volunteer and Students on Placement ‘policy which is on the school network.

Whistleblowing and Concerns

Broomfield operates in an open and transparent environment, therefore we encourages staff to draw attention to breaches in our policies and procedures and to report any concerns.

Staff concerns should initially be raised through the normal line management structure but staff should also be aware of the ‘Whistleblowing’ policy. This is available in the staff room and on the school network, and staff should be aware that they are able to raise concerns in the knowledge that these will be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.

Please refer to our ‘Whistleblowing’ policy which is on the school network.

And finally…..

We hope that you’ve found this guide useful and enjoy working with us at Broomfield South SILC.
