WelcomeWelcome to the Sixth Brooklyn Peace Fair!

This Peace Fair is dedicated to the memory of Evelyn Abelson and NePortia (Portia) Waldon, Board members of Brooklyn For Peace, both of whom were with us for our first Peace Fair in 2003 and for every one since. Evelyn passed away in November 2008, and Portia in August 2009. Both were visionary as well as practical, bringing many new ideas and new people into our movement.

Our keynote speaker this year is Father Roy Bourgeois, founder of the School of the Americas Watch and nominee for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize. We are honored that he will be spending the entire day with us. He will share the story of his development as a peace activist and human rights advocate as well as the committed and inspiring leader of the campaign to end U.S. military training of Latin American security personnel.

Both Evelyn and Portia would be as proud as we are of our collaboration this year with the Brooklyn College Community Partnership and the Brooklyn College Student Center. With their leadership, we are able to hold the Fair on this beautiful campus and to join with students in our efforts to create a just and sustainable society.

Brooklyn For Peace celebrated our 25th Anniversary year in 2009. Although we are proud of how far we have come, we still have a long way to go in achieving our goal: a world free of militarism, in which resources are directed to human needs and to eliminating the social and economic injustices that are the causes of war.

We hope everyone who comes today will join us, in whatever way is possible for you, to go forward in building a world free of war. Let’s wage peace together!!

BUILDING THE MOVEMENT TO CLOSE THE SCHOOL OF THE AMERICASFather Roy Bourgeois, founder of School of the Americas (SOA) Watch, former prisoner of conscience, and 2009 Nobel Peace Prize Nominee, was born in Louisiana in 1938. He was awarded the Purple Heart for service as a Navy officer in Vietnam. In 1972 he became a Catholic priest with the Maryknoll order and worked with the poor in Bolivia for five years. When he spoke out against the repressive dictatorship of SOA graduate Hugo Banzar, he was imprisoned and expelled from the country.

In 1980, Fr. Roy became involved in the issue of U.S. policy toward Latin America when four U.S. churchwomen, two of them his friends, were raped and killed by members of the U.S.-trained Salvadoran Army. When the School of the Americas, the U.S. Army’s main institution that trained Latin American soldiers, moved to Fort Benning, Georgia, Fr. Roy decided to shine a spotlight on its role in supporting repression. In 1990, he snuck onto the base at night and from a boombox broadcast the final sermon of Archbishop Oscar Romero, who had been assassinated by SOA graduates in 1980, and called on the Salvadoran soldiers then in training at the SOA to “Stop the repression!”

Fr. Roy served over four years in federal prison for this and subsequent acts of civil disobedience and sparked a mass movement, represented by SOA Watch, that confronted U.S. militarism and demanded the closing of the SOA, which has trained over 70,000 Latin American soldiers and produced hundreds of known human rights violators and dictators.

He speaks to church and community groups around the country. Since 2006, as part of the Partnership America Latina (PAL), an initiative to build a cooperative relationship between U.S. and Latin American social justice movements, he has met with numerous government leaders throughout Latin America, influencing five countries to withdraw their military personnel from the SOA (now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation). In 2009, he was nominated for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.

Fr. Roy will join other SOA-related events throughout the afternoon. Check the schedule at 12:00, 1:00, 3:00, and 4:00.

Thanks to Evelyn Ableson and Portia Waldon for all of your contributions. Your spirits are with us today.

With love and respect,

The Brooklyn For Peace Board of Directors”

Workshops12:00 pmGreeting from Fr. Roy BourgeoisNYC SOA WatchFr. Roy Bourgeois will draw on his life work as founder of SOA Watch and a human rights activist willing to go to jail for justice. He will speak with young people to inspire them to become activists for social justice.

Brooklyn Haiti Solidarity InitiativesLatin America Committee of Brooklyn For PeaceActivists sprang into action to work on people-to-people projects that would help alleviate the suffering of the Haitian people during this terrible disaster. During this hour we will hear about achievements and plans, looking to help coordinate these efforts and increase their efficiency and effectiveness. A member of the Latin America Committee will facilitate an open dialogue.

1:00 pmForging Connections with Youth in DarfurGlobal KidsThis workshop is designed and led by Global Kids youth leaders involved in mobilizing for change in solidarity with young people in Sudan, who have discovered the importance of mobilizing people while taking guidance from youth affected by the ongoing injustices and violence in Darfur. Through the Global Kids Human Rights Activism Program (HRAP) young people at Long Island City High School in Queens have been leading a solidarity campaign in support of three popular education, youth, theater, and music groups in Darfur. They directly connected to youth in Nyala, Darfur, raising funds to support their work and enabling Darfurian youth’s voices and perspectives to be heard at conferences and on the radio. They will share their experiences through pictures and film and engage participants in interactive activities aimed at promoting youth-led international solidarity activism in other communities. Using the Darfur campaign as an example, the workshop will offer specific ways to directly engage in solidarity work with young people in other countries. Global Kids Inc. is a youth development organization that coordinates after-school leadership programs and daytime classroom residencies on global citizenship and a wide range of social justice issues in 10 different public high schools around New York City.

Nuclear Zero - No Bombs: A Conversation Nuclear Zero Committee of Brooklyn for PeaceThis discussion will cover worldwide and regional nonproliferation and disarmament of nuclear weapons, focusing especially on the current United Nations Review Conference, proposals for a Middle East nuclear-weapon-free zone, and the implications of the new U.S. Nuclear Posture Review. Background materials will be provided. For everyone from high schoolers to seniors who remember when the U.S. A-bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Nuclear Zero Committee is a new committee of Brooklyn for Peace, meeting since March 2009. Its current priority issues are: proposals for

a Middle East nuclear-weapon-free zone; dangers of “peaceful use”; and implications of the U.S. Nuclear Posture Review.

HIV 101Lutheran Family Health Centers: Project SAFEThrough brainstorming, games and interactive discussions, our Peer Educators will present an overview of basic facts about transmission and prevention of the HIV virus and facilitate a multi-layered conversation about personal and community health, focusing on personal experiences and thoughts of audience members. All are welcome, but particularly youth ages 12-19. Presented by Rhea Griffith and Calvin Roberts, who use their extensive knowledge and their experiences growing up in Brooklyn, to lead participants on a transformative journey through personal and community health. Project SAFE seeks to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS by empowering young people to protect themselves and others with the knowledge and resources necessary to make healthy decisions. Project SAFE is a space for teenagers to learn, grow, express themselves, and extend the embrace of safety into their own communities.

Youth Voices from Palestine (film screening)Israel-Palestine Committee of Brooklyn for PeaceThis 13-minute film was made by Palestinian youth in the West Bank in response to the question, “What would you like to tell people in the United States about Palestinian young people and your life here in Palestine?” Responses range from describing their culture and everyday experiences to honest accounts of what it is like to live under occupation. The film uses video as a form of peacebuilding, highlighting voices often lost in today’s mainstream media and providing a glimpse into the lives of these youth. A Q&A with Heidi and Nora will follow. All welcome, especially teens. Nora Gordon, who has an M.A. in International Affairs, has been studying and practicing conflict resolution and prevention for nearly a decade. She has worked on peacebuilding projects in East Timor, Rwanda, Brazil, the West Bank, Syria, Liberia and New York. Heidi Rosbe is pursuing an M.A. in International Affairs. She was Associate Director of the Arab American Association of NY, and has many years experience designing and facilitating youth and adult programs in Montreal, Ann Arbor, Brooklyn, and the West Bank, aiming to create social change through interpersonal dialogue and the arts.

Guns and Greed (film showing)NYC SOA WatchWe will show this 20-minute introduction to the SOA and the movement to close it down, followed by a presentation about the local movement by NYC SOA Watch group activist and Nassau County Community College professor Joe Dowling. The School of the Americas (now the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation) is the U.S. Army training school at Fort Benning, Georgia. Since 1946, it has trained over 70,000 Latin American soldiers in counter-insurgency, as an arm of the U.S. imperial system. Hundreds of graduates are known to have engaged in human rights violations and to have become military and political leaders, including several dictators. In 1990, Fr. Roy Bourgeois founded SOA Watch to challenge U.S.-sponsored repression. In 1995, SOA Watch exposed training manuals used at the school to teach torture and assassination. Hundreds of people have been sentenced to prison for acts of civil disobedience, by crossing onto the base. Thousands protest at the base every November. SOA Watch pursues various strategies, including legislation,

media exposure and protest, to confront U.S. militarism and close the SOA.

Food Justice in BrooklynProject Peace Media Collective, Brooklyn College Community PartnershipThe Project Peace Media Collective of Bushwick High School will present a workshop demonstrating the importance of food justice in Brooklyn through research, mapping, photography and video. There will also be a sneak preview of their video, Food Justice in Brooklyn. Project Peace is the flagship program for Brooklyn College Community Partnership, which serves over 1500 Brooklyn youth each year through networks of educational innovation connecting underserved youth, local middle and high schools, high-need communities, and Brooklyn College. In Project Peace, Brooklyn teenagers do writing and media projects in community-building, conflict resolution, and race, gender and sexual identity. Project Peace is funded by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development.

Unheard Voices: Letters from Immigrant DetaineesBrooklyn College Community Partnership (BCCP)Students from BCCP will read from letters written by New York immigrants detained at the notorious Monmouth and Passaic County Jails in New Jersey from 2003 to 2006. These letters starkly depict the American “justice” system, which has created penal colonies designed to deprive detainees accused but not convicted of any offense of liberty, dignity, the basics of life we take for granted, and even of life itself. Each day ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) incarcerates some 36,000 persons in a patchwork system of county jails, prisons, and detention centers spread out across the nation. An estimated 442,000 immigrants per year are in detention, double those held in 2003.

Who Cares About Afghanistan? Challenges to Peace ActivismIraq/Afghanistan Committee of Brooklyn for Peace Facilitated discussion geared to students and teachers of all ages. Today’s students are pressed by many responsibilities and concerns. Should peace be on the list? Do events occurring in faraway Afghanistan matter enough to merit action? How does that situation relate to other important life issues? Led by Carolyn Eisenberg, writer, teacher, and activist.

2:00 pmSamba Drumming & Dance for Peace: Perfor-mance/Workshop Samba School for Social Justice ProjectThis workshop features a brief presentation of the power of samba drum and dance as tools to promote peace and justice while having fun and working out. Presented by Carlos de Oliveira, founder of the Samba School, who became involved in music and social activism from an early age in Brazil. Samba School for Social Justice exists to increase awareness of and address educational, economic, and social issues affecting low- and moderate-income Latino, Caribbean, and African-American youth in New York City.

3:00 pmConscious Social Documentary PhotographyAlliance of Conscious Documentarians (ACD)Vanissa Chan will discuss her experience as a social documentary photographer, combining photojournalism and activism. She will discuss strategies and focuses to help other visual artists link their art with activism in a progressive and effective way. She will also discuss camera and editing techniques. Vanessa, who has nearly 15 years experience, has worked closely with ANSWER Coalition and Party for Socialism and Liberation and has been published in various progressive papers including the Indypendent, the Liberation, and the Socialist Worker. The Alliance of Conscious Documentarians is a collective of documentarians (photographers, videographers, and other visual artists) who are actively engaged in bringing visibility to the perspectives of the oppressed and workers around the world. In particular its members stand against racism and colonization with respect to the continued occupation of Palestine and the Middle East.

Darfur Crisis: VideoDarfur People’s Association of New YorkA 30-minute video about the situation in Darfur, presented by Ahmet Noor, President, Darfur People’s Association of New York. The Association is an organization of Darfurian refugees that works to help newly arrived Darfuris adjust to American society, unify Darfuris throughout the USA so they can become a powerful voice for advocacy, raise public awareness about the critical situation in Darfur, and advocate for Darfur at all levels of the United Nations and the US government.

Dialogue Not Debate – How New York Palestin-ians, Israelis, Muslims and Jews Engage over Right of Return, Security and The WallThe Dialogue ProjectWe will explore a transformative dialogue process that engages New York’s Palestinian and Jewish communities in monthly dialogue circles. We will examine “hot words” like “fundamentalism,” “terrorism,” and “security” and discuss the tools of active/generous listening and reflection. We will engage in specific exercises that support unpacking assumptions and generalities about others. We will explore how transformative dialogue creates opportunities for risk-taking and invites participants to gain clarity about their own perspective while becoming open to the experience and perspective of “the other.” Presented by Marcia Kannry, founder of The Dialogue Project, and dialogue participants Irene Friedman and Sammer Abolela. The Dialogue Project creates the opportunity for Palestinians, Israelis, Jews, Muslims, new immigrants, long-time citizens, and others of many ethnicities and cultures to come together to explore differences and commonalities, build mutual trust, and establish partnerships across inter-group divisions.

Closing the SOA: Panel DiscussionFr. Roy BourgeoisFr. Roy Bourgeois will join a panel discussion with local activists about building the movement to close the SOA and building solidarity with struggles for peace and justice throughout Latin America.

A Taste of Playback Susan MetzPlayback is an improvisational theater form that uses personal stories volunteered by audience members as raw material. A group of trained performers turns each story into a performance piece. Companies in more than 50 countries use this method for conflict resolution, community building, and enhancing empathy. This workshop, for everyone 14 and up, will introduce the theory and practice of Playback through cooperative games, dancing, singing, and sharing our stories. Presented by Susan Metz, who joined the Playback movement 30 years ago to enhance her spontaneity while teaching public high school. She graduated from the School of Playback Theatre in 2006 and taught it throughout Latin America and in the US. Susan established the Brooklyn Playback Collaborative in 2007.

The Health Care Professions and Torture - The Case of the PsychologistsMarianne JacksonAfter 9/11, Cheney declared, “The gloves are off.” Psychologists, along with other healthcare professionals, participated in torture and abuse interrogations in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. The American Psychological Association actively worked to use psychological research to develop “enhanced interrogation techniques” and place psychologists at the center of the system of abuse and torture employed by the CIA and the military. A determined group of psychologists organized the membership to fight the organization’s collusion with torture, a struggle that continues. In New York the Gottfried Bill, which forbids licensed healthcare professionals to participate in torture and abuse, is part of this struggle. Presented by Marianne Jackson, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in private practice in Brooklyn. She is an active member of the New York State Psychological Association and a founding member of New York Coalition Against Torture (NYCAT).

Poems against WarAnti-Militarism Committee of Brooklyn for PeaceDayl Wise (Vietnam vet, author of Poems and Other stuff, Post Traumatic Press), Connie Norgren (teacher, author of Same Boat, 5 Spice Press), and Joan Pleune (activist and teacher) will present a poetry workshop with an emphasis on writing poems against war. We will share a varied selection of poems by writers including Denise Levertov, e.e. cummings, Wilfred Owen and other veterans, and spend some time focusing on craft, and write....

4:00 pmWe Are Not Your Soldiers: Video and DiscussionWorld Can’t WaitIn this video presentation and discussion, for all ages but especially middle and high school students and teachers, we will show a clip from the Collateral Murder video of the July 2007 US military atrocity in Iraq. We will present the material we offer high school classes and explain how we get into classrooms and how we work with students to follow up on their interest. Presented by Elaine Brower, military mother, and Matthis Chiroux, Iraq war resister. In the “We Are Not Your Soldiers” tour, World Can’t Wait activists team up with Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam veterans, using videos and personal stories to show the horror that the US military inflicts on people in other

countries. We dispel the myths behind military recruitment and the glory recruiters describe by going deeply into the truth of what recruits are asked to do once in the military and empowering youth to resist the recruiters. These presentations motivate youth and students to resist military recruiters, based on a solid foundation of moral opposition to war crimes.

Closing the SOA: Breakout SessionsNYC SOA WatchAfter the panel at 3:00, small group breakout sessions will develop ideas about building grassroots solidarity and strategize about closing the SOA. Then the larger group will come together for discussion.

Keeping Up With the News on Afghanistan and IraqCarolyn EisenbergFacilitated discussion for anyone trying to stay informed about the still-unfoldin g “war on terrorism.” What are the important questions that we need to answer about the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan? Do the details matter? How can we speak knowledgeably to others about the need for a more peaceful approach? And how can we keep up with the news when the situation in both places is so complicated? Led by Carolyn Eisenberg, professor of U.S. foreign policy at Hofstra University, co-founder of Brooklyn For Peace.

Nuclear Zero—No Plants: A Conversation Nuclear Zero Committee of Brooklyn For PeaceWe will discuss the problems of nuclear power, both worldwide and in our own backyard. We’ll focus particularly on international regulation, proposed U.S. legislation on energy and climate change, and the status of the Indian Point Energy Center, 24 miles north of New York City. Background materials will be provided. For everyone from high schoolers to seniors who remember when the U.S. A-bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Nuclear Zero Committee is a new committee of Brooklyn for Peace, meeting since March 2009. Its current priority issues are: proposals for a Middle East nuclear-weapon-free zone; dangers of “peaceful use”; and implications of the U.S. Nuclear Posture Review.

Ongoing activitiesConflict Resolution BoothProject Peace, Brooklyn College Art Lab (BCAL)Project Peace students from Brooklyn College Art Lab will create a Conflict Resolution Booth. Attendees can come into the booth and discuss an issue or problem that they need to resolve with high school conflict-resolution specialists. BCAL is a dedicated afterschool teen center on the Brooklyn College campus, serving nearly 1000 Brooklyn teenagers each school year. Generously funded by the Brooklyn Community Foundation, BCAL hosts a Macintosh lab, fashion studio, recording studio, college education room, and multiple breakout rooms for students to pursue their dreams.

PERFORMERSill-LiteracyEnter the world of digitiLL funk—an ever-expanding sonic universe piecemealed together by the ever-shrinking attention span of Oakland trio iLL-Literacy. Members Dahlak, Drizzletron, and N.I.C have known each other since birth, and since then have been playing with words and sounds, invading concert halls, off-Broadway stages, and college arenas throughout North America and Europe, and infiltrating networks from HBO to MTV and beyond. Toggling between daydream and full-blown hallucination, the result is iLL-Literacy’s first record, iB4the1. Colliding influences from Afrobeat and hip-hop as much as Plato and X-Men, their freshman effort plays more like the soundtrack for a never-ending shroomtrip than a standard rap album. It pays homage to a wide range of inspirations, while constantly reaching for the new. From a record that is political in scope but never heavy-handed to an intersecting live show that boasts life-size Lego-men, iLL-Literacy is both a product of its time and a defining feature.

The Last InternationaleThe Last Internationale is both a folk duo (Edgey and Delila) and a 4-piece rock-and-roll/blues/punk band from NY. Rejecting the belief that musicians should be mere entertainers or controversial only for the sake of healthy political discourse, the group prefers to mix music with (dis)organized resistance. Their intent isn’t simply to change your mind, but to inspire acts of rebellion that will bring down empires.

Dave LippmanSatirical songster Dave Lippman presents “Bard of the Bankers Wild Bill Bailout,” assuring a fair and balanced Peace Fair. “Bailout” presents the pro-financial collapse, anti–health care point of view.

GioSafariIn May 2008, Gio Andollo was struck by a motor vehicle while riding his bicycle in downtown Orlando. Suffering from deep bouts of depression and existential frustration, he began busking as a solo artist that November, and GioSafari was born. Over the following year he wrote, recorded, and released his debut album Life Is A Bike Wreck (Better Wear Your Helmet), booked a nationwide tour, and moved to NYC to continue his work a musician, artist, and activist.

MetroSonicsPaul Josephs: Leader of the band, NY street kid, son of a tough Jewish mother, guitarist, MC, college graduate, educator, martial artist, public art school product, captain of the team, oversensitive street brawler, blues junkie, jazz lover, classic- rock-listening early 90’s skater boy, foodie, autocrat of my own kitchen, producer, entrepreneur, session musician, activist ready to take to the streets, world traveler, Cuban soul, wine lover, millionaire, broke artist, health nut, stone-cold-sober businessman, hemp lover, beat-boxer, free style whiz, comedian, rock star, came up with the name MetroSonics while heading downtown on the 2 train to a gig.

The New York Metro Raging Grannies and Their DaughtersWe are a group of 12 to 16 women aged 48–95. We sing satirical song lyrics set to familiar melodies to express our feelings on environmental, economic, and political issues, emphasizing antiwar positions. We give out song sheets so the audience can join in. We receive enthusiastic responses from audiences at political rallies, fairs, vigils, picnics, etc. (Short sample: “There’s no business like war business, the worst business I know….”) The Raging Grannies began in Canada in 1989, and now there are “gaggles” all over the U.S., Canada Great Britain, Israel, Australia, Greece, and Germany. Our gaggle was formed by Molly Klopot, director of women’s International League for Peace and freedom (WILPF), about 9 years ago.

Veronica NunnVeronica grew up in Harlem, New York, with musicians who were around when jazz music was first getting started—Big Nick Nicholas (John Coltrane’s teacher), Eddie Harris, Red Norvo, and others. She has been a member of the Michael Franks band for the last 16 years and has performed extensively in the U.S., Europe, Japan, Turkey, Korea, Russia, the Caribbean, Africa, and the Far East.

Rude Mechanical OrchestraThe Brooklyn-based radical marching band plays protest marches, picket lines, and benefits for good causes, striving to support organizations working for social justice through music and dance.

Stephanie RookerStephanie Rooker’s soul-shaking sounds range from saucy R&B to innovatively revived funk to jazz-infused ballads. Her unique, alluring music—influenced by her native Virginia, ethnomusicology studies, and world travels—is fueled by an almost tangible passion, creating a force for empowerment and social change. Rooker has been performing in NYC and beyond for the past 4 years, including high-profile venues such as NYC’s Blue Note, Bitter End, and D.C.’s Blues Alley. In 2008 she released her debut CD, Tellin You Right Now, to a packed house at NYC’s Cutting Room and has since been climbing the music-scene ladder quickly. Rooker and her band, the Search Engine, are currently completing their second album, The Only Way Out is In, due for release in 2010.

SpiritchildSpiritchild is a freedom singer who uses the arts to cultivate a cultural revolution. He integrates activism and hip hop music production as the founder of the Movement In Motion Artist & Activist Collective. As the Rhythmic Poet of the hip hop fusion band Mental Notes, he uses his music to awaken his audience to the injustices facing the poor and oppressed, inspiring action on environmental and social justice in New York City and around the world. He is a songwriting instructor and artist at several public schools in New York and facilitates that process internationally in seasonal tours in Germany, India, and elsewhere. Currently organizing a regional conference on climate change, he is highlighting disaster relief and environmental justice with black, brown, and other oppressed people. He keeps it all down to earth by balancing his art with work at a home for intellectually disabled and psychologically diagnosed adults in the Bronx.

ALL SOULS BETHLEHEM CHURCH566 E. 7th St., Brooklyn, NY Services are Sunday morning at 10:30

We are an inclusive community, welcoming and affirming all - without regard to race or ethnicity, differences in ability, gender or sexual orientation - all who seek a liberal church committed to justice and an open spiritual quest. In addition to being open to and celebrating the World religions as a major source of wisdom and inspiration, our congregation voted overwhelmingly to declare All Souls Bethlehem an Open and Affirming Church and to become affiliated with The Center for Progressive Christianity.

FREE FAHADSyed Fahad Hashmi is a US citizen who grew up in

Queens and graduated from

Brooklyn College. Accused of

providing material support

to Al Qaeda, Fahad has

been held for almost three

years in severe (no calls, no

letters, no radio, no sunlight,

constant video surveillance)

solitary confinement,

24/7 at the Metropolitan

Correctional Center in

Manhattan. The charges by

the government are that

for two weeks in 2004, he

allowed an acquaintance to

stay in his London apartment

and that this acquaintance

had a suitcase full of

waterproof socks and rain

ponchos that was allegedly

later delivered by this

acquaintance to a member of

Al Qaeda. He also allegedly

borrowed Fahad’s cell phone.

These are the stated

charges. It would seem

that Fahad’s beliefs and

associations are being

used against him and will

improperly interfere with

a fair trial. Because of

the Classified Information

Procedures Act but in direct

contradiction to basic due

process, the government

has not even allowed Fahad

to review all of the

evidence against him.

By the time this is

being read (his trial

is scheduled to begin

April 28) the US Justice

system may have made its

decision. Given the limited

nature of the charges and

the violent nature of his

incarceration, we pray that

Fahad has been/will be

released and that he is not

irrevocably harmed by what

has been done to him.

To help stop this torture in all such cases and for more information on this case, go to www.freefahad.com or www.educatorsforcivilliberties.org.

How You Can ParticipateOur members have many obligations to family, friends, schools and jobs. We encourage people to participate to whatever extent they are able. You can become a member, attend an educational forum, join a working committee, write letters, make phone calls, staff information tables, or join the Board of Directors. We are united by our concern for future generations.

Become a member of BFP today.

Brooklyn For PeaceBrooklyn For Peace is a diverse network of Brooklyn residents alarmed by the growing militarism of our society and its impact on our lives as well as the lives of people in other countries. After working together for 23 years as Brooklyn Parents for Peace, we were proud to announce our more inclusive new name, Brooklyn For Peace. Our concern for future generations continues to unite us. We celebrated our 25th anniversary year in 2009!

We organize community meetings and forums, set up information tables, participate in phone and advertising campaigns, meet with elected officials and participate in demonstrations. We disseminate solid and carefully researched analysis on international and domestic policies.

We are a democratically functioning group made up of committees which plan and carry out educational activities. Current committees include: Iraq/Afghanistan, Anti-militarism, Israel-Palestine, Darfur/Africa, Latin America, UNICEF, Nuclear Zero, Diversity/Outreach, Fundraising, and Peace Fair. We have a Board of Directors responsible for determining priorities and programs. Since our work is primarily educational, we are incorporated as a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation.

Brooklyn For Peace is committed to building a world free of war and the social injustices that are its causes. We seek to educate our community and ourselves on international and domestic issues so that we can be effective in securing a peaceful future. We believe, given the right tools, ordinary people can change the world.

Brooklyn College Student CenterFounded in 1962 by students, the Student Center has a rich history of community service and rich educational and social activities. Affectionately referred to as SUBO, the Brooklyn College Student Center continues to be the hub of student life on campus. Under the collaborative leadership of staff and students, the Center serves as the preferred venue for special events and meetings that are consonant with the College’s mission. Space at the Center gives students opportunity to demonstrate commitment to service, international and community programming, leadership development, model citizenship, community partnering, and professionalism. The Center is home to several functional art galleries, a student- operated coffee shop and game room, a community Small Business Center, and a Student Volunteer Center. The Brooklyn College Student Center’s Conference Center aspires to be a dynamic community partner and cornerstone of the community by providing multipurpose space and hosting various programs and events. As a nonprofit organization the Student Center offers affordable event space to the community. The funds help support student and community programming, give students jobs, and ensure that an essential part of the Brooklyn College experience lives on. Come by and check out your space in Brooklyn!

Brooklyn College Arts LabBrooklyn College Arts Lab (BCAL) is possibly the largest dedicated after school teen center on a college campus today. With 6900 sq ft. of space, BCAL seves nearly 1000 Brooklyn teenagers each school year. BCAL hosts a Macintosh lab, fashion studio, recording studio, college education room and multiple breakout rooms for students to pursue their dreams. BCAL is a safe creative space for teens to met and make music, works of art and media, cook meals and learn about nutrition and contemplate their dreams for a bright future. BCAL is generously funded by the Brooklyn Community Foundation.

Participation in the Brooklyn Peace Fair does not imply endorsement by Brooklyn For Peace. The opinions presented at the Brooklyn Peace Fair are of the individuals and organizations participating and do not necessarily reflect those of Brooklyn For Peace. The Brooklyn Peace Fair is an inclusive event that strives to create a broad-based movement for peace and justice.
