Students at MS 136 focused on the subject of landmarks for an entire year. They first began by studying some of New York’s most famous landmarks.

In response to these initial investigations, students were asked to write a report and create an accompanying model for their favorite historic landmark.

In Part II of the project, students learned about the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the difference between an official, protected historic landmark and an “unofficial” landmark. Students were then asked to create a mock proposal for the Landmarks Preservation Commission on their favorite neighborhood landmark.

“This school is very meaningful to our fellow classmates…We have made many memories in this amazing school, and learned many things. We just want everyone to see that. We want our sisters and brothers to come to this school, which is why we researched this landmark.”

-Leticia, John, Lissette, Brooklynn, Carlos & Justin

“I enjoyed this project because I learned many important facts from my topic and because it was fun working together as a team with my classmates… I think that it’s really important to study Brooklyn history because that way we can learn more about our past and what Brooklyn was like before.”

-Leticia
