The Black AlgaePlague !
It's swimming season, and with the warmer water comes
another of our annual pestilences: Algae. That's right, it's not enough to have moles in our yards, and Rose Rosette disease on our flowers, we now have to put up with with these little critters that feast on the biological debris in our pools. For some of us, it's worse, for in addition to the ever present threat of yellow algae, we are fighting the worst of the worst: Black Algae.
If you don't have it, consider yourself lucky (and don't look too closely either), for black algae is by far the hardest form of this pest family to eradicate. Anyone see the movie Alien? Yep, that's about the size of it. Treatment options, are, realistically, prevention, like don't swim in a lake then use the same swim suit in your pool....ever.
Over the last five years, we have tried every treatment, with the exception of one - a strong mixture of ammonia and bleach, which created visions of a World War I chlorine gas attack. Realizing that our neighbors would never find their gas masks in these enormous attics, we passed on the chance to create the 4th battle of Ypres. Copper based algaecides? Been there, done that, and got a messed up filter to boot. Super shocking? Yawn. Drain the pool and treat with acid? Yup. Copper Ions? Yeah baby. We even resurfaced the pool, only to have the the little spelunkers find their way to the new surface.
So the latest experiment, and a pricey one at that, is an ultrasound device made in the Netherlands. The idea is that the sound transmissions from the device cause the cell walls to weaken, sort of like putting them in the microwave (if only!) So far, so good - so far. If we can't kill the little buggers, at least we will be able to tell what sex they are! And heh - maybe it will annoy the moles!

The Elkins Join Brook MeadowsYou know if new residents attend the annual BMHOA meeting on
the very day they move in, they are going to be great additions to our neighborhood. That’s exactly what Alice and Tony Elkins did after unpacking at 4613 Green Oaks. They join us from Arlington. Tony is a native Texan but Alice grew up in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, where her father worked for Aramco Oil Co. They met while attending Baylor. Tony is VP of Customer Relations for Planview Inc., a software company specializing in portfolio management. Alice is the Business Manager for the South Region (Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma) of Lehigh-Hanson/Heidelberg, the 3rd largest cement company in the world. They have 2 daughters; Christine is a newly wed and in vet school at A&M while Rachel will graduate in May from A&M with a finance degree. 2 dogs and 2 cats complete the family. Their hobbies are bike riding (including long distance rides for charity) and jogging. Tony is a Manchester United soccer fan and Alice is a member of the singing group “Heart Over Heels” featuring Christian and “Big Band” era music. Welcome!
The Chandlers settle in to2811 Shenandoah
Coming to the Metroplex via a transfer for David, the Chandlers relocated to Brook Meadows from San Diego. Having grown up in Austin, Julie is thrilled to be back in Texas. Dave, a native of Indiana, is the Executive VP of Construction at Third Day Inc., a development company headquartered in Las Colinas. He enjoys hunting, golfing and doing all the “guy stuff”. Julie is quite an accomplished quilter and also joins Dave on long distance motorcycle trips. They both are avid bikers and have a goal of riding through each of the continuous 48 states, of which they have already done 22. But right now they are focused on updating their new home and sprucing up the yard and gardens. Welcome!

Welcome to our Community Dear New Neighbors, On behalf of your neighbors in the Brook Meadows Homeowners Association (BMHA), we extend a warm welcome to our neighborhood and an invitation to become actively involved in your neighborhood Association. We are a self-managed, non-profit Association, and our mission is to:
Maintain the aesthetic beauty of our community and promote a friendly, active and
cohesive community environment; Improve homeowner property values by improving the commonly maintained areas,
focusing on maximizing the return on investment for all Brook Meadows homeowners; Take management actions, as appropriate, under BMHA Bylaws to ensure compliance
with the Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CC&Rs) in order to maintain and protect the aesthetic and financial best interests of all homeowners, and;
Maintain open, two-way communications with all Brook Meadows homeowners in order to make informed management decisions in the best interests of homeowners.
The BMHA was originally chartered as a voluntary organization, and in June 2006 became a mandatory Association by an overwhelming vote of your neighbors. The current annual Association dues assessment is a minimal $275. The annual assessment is payable every April and runs through the end of March each year. An invoice will be mailed in February to remind you of the payment due date. Your Membership dues help the Association maintain our beautiful entrances and the Glade Road grass frontage, maintain our fountain at the Lakeside/Jackson Road entrance, provide the necessary utilities for the commonly maintained areas, and support our communications and website. Your dues are not used to support any of our social events or our monthly neighborhood newsletter, The Brook Meadows Messenger. Please feel free to contact any Board member with any questions you may have or for additional information about our neighborhood or the Colleyville area. Your active involvement and participation in your neighborhood is welcomed and encouraged. We need your assistance in our voluntary committees to make Brook Meadows the best community possible. So please contact any of the committee chairpersons for committees that may be of interest to you, or your family, you may find contact information listed on our website at www.brookmeadows.org. Participation is a great way to meet your new neighbors.
