xtreme sizes seems to be the theme of the season around here. From a larger-than-life-size portrait commission to three small but spectacular new sculptures, Mark has been elbow-deep in the details. Two of the smaller works are bird pieces. The first is entitled Petites Belles , featuring a charming pair of chickadees perched on dogwood branches. Interestingly, this new piece has two options for display; it is gorgeous either placed on a shelf or hung on a wall! Petites Belles is the annual edition we promised in our last newsletter to celebrate our 30th year of Mark Hopkins Sculpture. It will only be available for one year, so if you would like one, you’ll need to reserve yours soon! The second new bird might be diminutive, but it is packed with magnificent power. The Spirit of Liberty measures 9 inches from wingtip to wingtip, and is similar in style to one of Mark’s long sold-out eagles. This new sculpture will be a favorite with patriots, boy scouts, pilots, and anyone who loves eagles. Lastly, we are introducing a smaller version of The Lion and the Lamb , which has appealed to many in search of a beautiful symbol of peace and hope in their lives. At half the original size, this sculpture measures 6 inches long. BRONZEWORKS Hot Off the Crucible A MARK HOPKINS SCULPTURE SEMI-ANNUAL NEWSLETTER SPRING 2018 VOLUME XXVI, No 1 E

or Mark and his wife, Laurie, celebrating

45 years of marriage at Disney World with most of their children and their spouses was one of their most cherished recent events. Acting like children is a great way for responsible adults to remember that simple joy is still possible.

Looking back over the past 30 years in business has caused us to remember some of our favorite “oldies but goodies.” Somehow, Mark’s Ancient of Days and Awake and Hungry have never lost their charm and remain some of his

I loved making plastic models, mostly cars and classic movie monsters. But I eventually got tired of making other people’s designs, so I took a wood-burning tool and melted down some of my models. One of my very first sculptures resulted from studying my own hand as a reference, and reassembling the melted plastic into a hand.

Ever since, I’ve always loved faces and hands. They are the most expressive parts of the body. Through them, I can capture the living force behind the form of a person or animal. I can never replicate God’s perfect designs, but I love the challenge of trying. It is a refining process, not only for the wax or clay, but for me.

Creativity is really a spiritual undertaking, and the first attribute of God that we learn about. Genesis reads, ‘In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth’ and ‘the earth was without form.’ That is our introduction to the inherent divinity in the act of creation. Then at the end of the first chapter, it says God ‘saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.’ It’s a great example for us. I will never even come close to God’s artistry, but I hope the effort makes me a better artist and a better man.

Since childhood, Mark Hopkins has always been fascinated by shape and form. In his words:Artist’s Corner

favorites. These are close to being sold-out but have a select few available to be cast. Mark’s exciting current challenge is creating a memorial portrait for Kathie’s Spring Garden at Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. Creating a larger-than-life-size portrait requires many hours of thought and research. First comes the sketch, and after it is approved, construction of the armature. Then comes the process of transforming clay into a portrait that captures not only the likeness but the spirit of the subject. Here are a few photos showing some of the early stages in that process.

s we celebrate 30 years, we find that Mark’s work is contributing to some sweet legacies. We loved this

story from one collector who discovered and shared Mark’s work. She said, “I read with interest in your recent newsletter about a collector’s purchase of the sculpture ‘I’ve Got It.’  I was moved to share my story.

One spring, probably 25 years ago or so, I went into one of my favorite gift stores, just wandering, not really looking for anything in particular. I saw the sculpture ‘Fastball’ of the

baseball pitcher, and thought, ‘I must get that for my husband for Father’s Day!’ My husband had been a baseball player and was a great fan of the game.  And one of our children was a pitcher.  As I was paying for the

gift and telling the clerk how excited I was about my selection, she asked if I had seen the other sculptures, which I had not.  She then showed me the catcher, ‘Close Call’ and the outfielder, ‘I’ve Got It’.  Well, we had three sons, the pitcher I already mentioned, a catcher, and an outfielder!  I was beside

Two of our cherished collectors from Oregon sent us photos of some of Mark’s work as beautifully displayed in their home. They never gave us a final tally of how many they own, but they gave us a great clue:

“Thank you SO much for yet more awesome creativity. We must tell you, though, that maybe you’d better slow it down for us. Every time you create a new piece we get closer to having to add a new wing onto our home. Of course it would have a name: The Hopkins Wing!!! True story.

We continue to find such pleasure each time we look at one of our many pieces created by you. It also reminds us that we have a responsibility to protect and embrace our environment and the beauty therein. Your art will always be there to remind us of what Nature has given us…

Thank you again and we can hardly wait to display yet more Mark Hopkins art.”

Here are a few of the works owned by this lovely couple:

myself! To buy three was incredibly more than I wanted to spend, but I just had to do it. We still have these pieces. Over all these years, they have been special to my husband as well as my children. What fun they had in presenting him with his gift that year! And, of course, in time they will be passed down, one to each son.”

Wow — is it really autumn time again? Our hearts are still full of summer sunshine! Mark’s adorable new chickadee is perched

on a sunfl ower, ready to feast on its tasty seeds. It takes a lot of energy to maintain such a high level

of cuteness! Sunshine’s wintertime sister, called Joy of the Season, debuted in 2012 and is still charming collectors all over the country.

Other creatures of the earth are joining the Mark Hopkins Sculpture family and charming the nation,

as well. With a name that means “good” and “beautiful” in Swahili, Zuri embodies

the adoration of a mother for her child. Like Ujamaa (meaning “family”), these lovely elephants can’t help but make us smile.

With all the touching majesty of the original version, Mark has created a smaller size of his tender portrait of Christ called The Lamb. At 8” tall, it is

perfect for a gift or more compact display area.

A different kind of majesty is soaring above the earth on Mark’s Wings of Freedom. This sleek and gorgeous new eagle is available with either a classic bronze patina or with dramatic bald eagle coloring. In either patina, it is a soul-stirring beauty.

Tuesday evenings in September were fun for Mark, as he taught a weekly class of students at the Sculpture Depot in Loveland. An enthusiastic and talented group of aspiring artists enjoyed Mark’s humorous and very hands-on approach to teaching, as they learned how to create their own designs in wax.
