WELCOME TO THE BRONX

A MESSAGE FROM

MARLENE CINTRON

PRESIDENT

WELCOME TO THE BRONX

Welcome to The Bronx! If this is your first visit, your Bronx experience will be exciting and ful-filling. For those of you that are returning, you will quickly note that there is even more to enjoy

and see.

This Visitors Guide has been especially prepared for you by our Bronx Tourism Council to ensure that you maximize your time here. Our beloved borough is diverse in language, culture and

sports. We want you to experience it all.

On City Island you can go fishing and then visit one of many incredible seafood restaurants. On Arthur Avenue you can shop for authentic Italian products and then sit down at a myriad of delec-table restaurants and pizzerias. If you are there for dinner, you may find yourself in the middle of a singalong at one of the restaurants. If you brought your bathing suit, Orchard Beach is the place to go. There is live music at the beach every Sunday during July and August. Make sure you bring your dancing shoes. We also have horseback riding and the oldest municipal golf

course in the nation.

A lot can be found in The Bronx, and that in-cludes great shopping at great prices. I encourage you to visit our stores at the Mall at Bay Plaza as well as the longest shopping district, Fordham Road, where friendly sales persons will provide you with mementos and products at prices you

will not see anywhere else.

When you return, consider staying at one of our new hotels. You can then use the savings to visit more of our exciting destinations. Thank you for

coming. We look forward to your return!

WELCOME TO THE BRONX

A MESSAGE FROM

OLGA LUZ TIRADO

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

We are overjoyed to present to you our 2nd Annual Bronx Visitors Guide! In this conven-ient pocket book you will find a variety of things to see and do in one of the most dynamic boroughs in New York City. Join the record number of visitors from all over the globe making their way to the borough, visit-

ing our institutions and dining at our eateries.

It’s obviously a great time to visit The Bronx. Some of the top tour companies in the city have designed exciting bus and walking tours through interesting historic Bronx neighbor-

hoods for you to enjoy. (see pages 38-40)

Last year, my office expanded our Bronx Trolley tours to include the Mansions & Cottages: Historic Homes and Gardens of The Bronx, which was met with great success. This year we are launching a new Breweries & Distilleries Trolley Tour and anticipate record numbers of visitors coming

to our borough. (see page 37 for details).

Also, in 2015, our annual borough-wide signature events like Bronx SalsaFest™; BronxWeek™; Tour de Bronx™ and Savor The Bronx™ Restaurant Week (see pages 26 & 27) enjoyed the largest participation ever and many of our attractions (pages 10-15) have reported a significant increase in visitors. The jig is up. The secret is out. People are coming to the realization that The Bronx is a

DESTINATION!

Come and visit! Take a tour!

Yes! You’re in The Bronx.

SUBWAYS & TRAINS Subway and train lines in The Bronx generally run north-south, and are the best option for getting to and from the other boroughs. The 4/5/6 trains travel to the east side of Manhattan, while the B/D/1/2 trains go to the west side. Subway and com-muter rail maps are available from the station agent at most subway stations.

http://www.mta.info

Metro-North Railroad commuter trains run about once every half-hour on weekdays and about once per hour on weekends at most stations, providing easy access between Grand Central Terminal, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut.

http://web.mta.info/mnr/html/planning

BUSES Every corner of The Bronx is accessible by bus, and it’s the best way to travel east-west across the

borough.

The Bronx has two Select Bus Service (SBS) routes, the Bx12 SBS serving Fordham Road and Pelham Parkway, and the Bx41 SBS, serving Webster Avenue. All SBS buses require payment before boarding; keep the receipt from the ticket vending machine as proof-of-payment for the duration of

your trip. http://www.mta.info

AIRPORTS Of the three major airports in the New York City area, The Bronx is closest to LaGuardia Airport, just across the East River. The best way to get there by public transportation is to travel by sub-way or Metro-North into Manhattan and transfer at 125 Street to the M60 SBS.

http://www.panynj.gov/airports/laguardia.html

To get to John F. Kennedy International Airport, travel by subway into Manhattan and transfer to a Jamaica Center (Queens)-bound E train. At Sut-phin Blvd-Archer Ave-JFK Airport, transfer to the AirTrain for service to all terminals.

http://www.panynj.gov/airports/jfk.html

For service to Newark Liberty International Airport, travel to Penn Station and board a New Jersey Transit train with service to the airport on the Northeast Corridor Line or the North Jersey Coast Line. http://www.panynj.gov/airports/newark-

liberty.html
