ANew Year's Party for agroup of 50 revelers wasspecial with Bobby

Sanabria's band of Latin Jazz all-stars, Sexteto Ibiano. The scenewas the Bronx Music HeritageCenter (BMHC) Lab, where BobbySanabria made clear at the startthat this was not a concert, but adance party, and exhorted couplesto get on the dance floor. Soon thecrowd loosened up and the party

started. Bobby Sanabria is a multi-grammy awarded nominated drum-mer and bandleader, and a BronxWalk of Fame inductee. A specialguest, Candido Camero, originallyfrom Cuba, played his 3-pitchedconga drum set, something he hasdone with all the great jazz bandsand still does well at age 91.Camero has been playing music inthe United States for many yearsand is a winner of the JazzmasterAward. A high point of theevening was a long conga drumsolo by Camero, ranging from fastmulti-drum beats to the slow tap-ping out of voodoo-like ritual

drumming. Other band membersincluded Frank Anderson on theelectric piano, Iran Ramon, singerand on the maracas, bassist AndyEulalie, and Peter Braden on saxo-phone. Sanabria, as a band leader, aims to follow the tradition ofAfro-Cuban Jazz band leaders like"Machito" Grillo.

The New Year's Eve partywas part of the Bronx Rising! pro-

ject of the Bronx Musical Heritage

Center (BMHC) Lab curated byBobby Sanabria, with folkloristElena Martinez of the organizationCity Lore. Music, film, and spo-ken word in this series range fromthe latest hip hop groups to theroots of Afro-Cuban Jazz. Otheractivities have been free intergen-erational classes on drumming, visual arts and hip hop dancing.

The intergenerational reachof jazz was striking with bandmusicians ranging from their 30sto over age 90. L ikewise, therepertoire of the band was wide, from cha-cha, salsa, meringue, andmambo styles, to the more roman-

tic "bolero" style, like the song"Sabor a Mi." Afro-Cuban jazz hasa big following in Puerto Rico, anddeveloped to its greatest extent inthe New York City area, wherepeople of all backgrounds playLatin Jazz. In the 1950s club era, many jazz bands played in theBronx, in clubs like Club 845, andBlue Morocco, as well as down-town Manhattan clubs like the

    Tropicana.

This nears the end of theBronx Rising! Series at Bronx Lab,but there is still one more group ofshows. Thursday, January 17th,Grace Drums will blend in R&B,

Jazz, Funk, Afro-Caribbean dancemusic and vocal improvisation tocreate original arrangements. Fri-day night wil l present the docu-mentary film "Style Wars" on hiphop culture, graffiti, New YorkCity and life. The last Bronx Ris-ing show on Saturday night fea-tures photographer J oe Conzo, speaking on his book "'Born in theBronx" that goes back to 1977,when he "began snapping urgent,

candid pictures of local shows, where a revolutionary new soundcould be heard." -- Entertainment
